Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

The foundation of alchemy is based on the law of equivalent exchange; you cannot produce something from nothing. As such, alchemy is bound by one taboo - human transmutation. Four years ago two young brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, broke this taboo when they tried to resurrect their dead mother. During the process Al's body disintegrated and Ed lost his leg. In a desperate attempt to prevent his brother from disappearing completely, Ed sacrificed one of his arms so he could affix Al's soul to a suit of armor. When his missing limbs are replaced by auto mail parts, Ed bears the name of the Fullmetal Alchemist - the youngest ever State Alchemist and dog of the military. Now, alongside his brother, Ed uses his status within the military to attempt to find any way that he can return their bodies back to their original state.

If you're looking for anime dealing with Alchemy, these two are the best I've found so far. Both the Homunculus in FMA and the Servants in Fate/Zero have a similar formula. Plots are very distinct though.

Fyacin Fyacin says...

They both have dark themes and creative use of magic. Fullmetal Alchemist has less ambiguous protagonists and antaganists, but both shows are excellent about developing character motivations.

brabraden brabraden says...

They are both great shows, and follow magic, great characters, good premise and a nice plot. I believe you will enjoy both of these shows.

ferengi4 ferengi4 says...

Both are good animes, that are about fantasy related things but one is about that being in a non-fantasy world and the other about the darker side of it. Both are fun animes to watch and overall pretty good

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

What makes these two so compatibe? Circles. Now, hear me out, the circles are magical and use alchemic theory.

Both anime also have: homunculi, sword fights, at least one very muscular slightly flamboyant man, and enough drama for a Spanish soap opera. (Ok, maybe not that much, but there's a lot of drama)

dragonballk dragonballk says...

Both anime are Magic based. Great range of characters. Unique and original ideas for powers. Both have a good premise for their story.

ShiroHatake ShiroHatake says...

Both stories have dark themes and deep metaphors. These are both anime for a mature viewing audience. Both shows have a good amount of battle based violence. Both shows have characters that fight each other using special powers or abilities unique to them.

Re:Creators

Re:Creators

People have created many stories. Joy, sadness, anger, deep emotion. Stories stir up emotion and captivate. However, those emotions are nothing more than the feelings of a spectator. What if the characters in the stories had their own will. In their eyes, are we, the creators of the stories, like gods? Revolution for our world. Punishment for the land of the gods. Re:CREATORS. Everyone becomes a Creator.

Both animes share common idea's of bringing characters from alternate worlds/timelines into the present and having a human host. If you like one you will most certainly like the other!

Just watch and be amazed. More like this. And the best aspect: NO CHEAP BOOB JOKES! Not a single one.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both are about characters who are out of this world battling it out for the fate of our very own world. That is what unites them, and they are different in from when and where they hail, their powers, and their outlooks. Expect skullduggery, deals, epic battles with high stakes, and more.

Fans of either would do well to check out the other.

JONDAMAN JONDAMAN says...

both are battle royale series that have participants that were called from different worlds/realities. both are also pretty heavy on dialogue.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist

Once upon a time, two brothers passed the happy days of their childhood by studying alchemy, which is governed by the equal transfer principle: an eye for an eye -- you can't get more than you give. But these brothers tried to defy that law, and a horrific accident resulted. Now, the older brother, Edward, is called the Full Metal Alchemist because of his metal limbs, and the younger, Alphonse, is a soul without a body, trapped within the confines of an automaton. Together they search for the power to restore themselves, to find the lives they lost so long ago...

All they must do is sign a contract with Kyubey and agree to fight witches that spread despair to the human world, and in return they will be granted a single wish. Madoka Magica and Fate Zero have several key things in common: stunningly animated battles, duels that get your heart racing, generous helpings of magic and fantasy, and an interesting bunch of tragic characters that must rail against their fate. The two shows also possess similarly dark atmospheres, with their colours leaning towards crisp gloominess, and, of course, haunting music by Yuki Kajiura. Thrills and drama come naturally to these two shows, and any fan of one would adore the other.

Daleheart Daleheart says...

Both of these anime don't hold back when it comes to bringing out dark themes.  These anime share the same brilliant writer, Gen Urobuchi.

Gavia Gavia says...

Both are dark fantasy stories with magic, contracts, duels, death and lovecraftian monsters. All while being beautifully animated. (F/Z more so than Madoka.)

Both of these series involve loads of chracters making intricate plans against each other for various motivations. There is action and a supernatural element in both. Code Geass has a lot of high school age characters while Fate/Zero mostly involves adults, and there are more not-so-serious episodes in Code Geass. Code Geass has mechs while Fate/Zero has swords and sorcery. But they both have more plotting and gambits than you can count. If you like that aspect of one, you'll almost certainly like the other.

Jockustoe Jockustoe says...

There are similarities between the two shows. While I would say Code Geass is better than Fate/Zero I wouldn't say that it is better by a landslide. Watch. Enjoy.

Both are dark animes where several players fight a game to either become a god or have their wish fullfilled. Although fate/zero is more supernatural, it has the same feel to it. If you like the temporary alliances/betrayal/bets and psychological warfare in either of the series, you'll like the other.

Gavia Gavia says...

Fate/Zero and Mirai Nikki share the premise of a survival game where the winner gains an incredibly large price. Both series explore the possibilities of temporary alliances with people you might end up having to kill.

While Fate/Zero rely more heavily on supernatural elements, Mirai Nikki also includes a mixture of supernatural and natural fighting styles.

All in all the two are similarly dark and share many plot elements. As such, if you liked one of them, you should give the other one a chance.

1. Magic exists in both worlds, but only certain people can utilise it. The magic in both anime also require some form of sacrifice before the magician can equip it (i.e., tools that civilisation use in Zetsuen no Tempest, magical power in Fate/Zero)

2.  The two main male protagonists in both anime seek completely different goals. However, in Zetsuen no Tempest, the two protagonists are friends. Also, all four characters from the respective anime are really intelligent.

3. A lot of planning and plotting are involved in both anime. All the planning and execution are really intriguing and entertaining.

Both are about people in a competition against each other after getting special powers, A super phone/super heroes. While all character are fighting for different reasons they are all trying to change the world. Fate/Zero is more action packed, while eden of the east can make your head hurt following, but both have good plots and storylines. Both try to go for the deeper meaning storyline. Both are good, but do have different styles.

Both of these shows involve people competing against each other, all for their own reasons -- and it's interesting to learn about those reasons as the series unfold. They both have plotting, scheming, and action, but they both have touching moments, too.

Despite being different shows with different settings, they still are alike. Fate Zero is all about 14 participants from different backgrounds fighting for their wishes whereas Cowboy Bebop is all about bounty hunting with some drama and betrayal. Main protaganists Spike Spiegel and Emiya Kiritsugu are alike since they wield guns and enjoy smoking and are with their own band. On the other hand, their mortal enemies Vicious and Kotomine Kirei are the only ones who can defeat them through seeking their own beliefs/wishes. Cowboy Bebop and Fate Zero goes through a series of battles that shows each character's perspectives until they exit before the most important point of the series. If you watched either of them, check em out cuz you'll love it especially if you watched Cowboy Bebop and then watch Fate Zero.

SO i have been reading all about how great Fate/Zero is, and how it is one of the best anime shows etc. I would have to agree with the fact that it is an enjoyable watch, however, not the best of all time, not even close to "epic". If you are looking for something epic and "new" try something a little bit older. Take a look at the insperation for so many different characters that you seem to love and enjoy! Yes, this is not as linear and easy to figure out as Fate/Zero, but it isn't too complicated that you can not figure out why each episode seems to be it's own short film. This is one of the best anime television shows of all time and if you enjoyed Fate/Zero you will enjoy Bebop.

This is more of for Fate/Zero 2, but that's really just the second half of this anime. Although these animes are not immediately similar, there's an intensity that feels familiar.
