I'll make this review short and bitter because that's what this OVA is; it's bitter to watch, bitter to understand, and just plain bitter if you haven't seen the original eX-Driver OVA series. This separate side-story OVA is about two of the main characters (MC's) from the original, Nina and Rei, who are in hot pursuit to stop a miniature AI-controlled car that just so happens to be a replica of what they drive.
The near complete disconnect from the viewer's perspective is quite apparent, just like I wrote about in my review of eX-Driver the Movie, where it difficult to fully grasp the concept in any real detail or to find too much entertainment beyond the sound effects and above average visuals. This solo OVA is even worse because the MC's are directly from the original. With just a 27-minute presentation, you can throw away any real substance in both story and character development.
To make it even more confusing, it is included with the eX-Driver the Movie instead of the original series, which it actually relates to. It makes absolutely no sense why this futile effort was packaged that way.
As previously mentioned, if there is entertainment to be had it's in the audio and visuals department. The action driving scenes are adequately executed, relatively enjoyable, and sound good. The final action scene is certainly very fun to watch. It's almost as much fun as the ending, when you've come to the realization that you just wasted 27 minutes of your life.
Bottom line: If you haven't seen the original series then do not waste your time watching this. Even then, you might not get enough satisfaction from it since the original series may or may not be worth investing your time into it either. I haven't seen it, and based on this and the movie I don't intend on it either.
