Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (2020)

The world that was once afflicted by Hadlar, the Dark Lord, has regained peace in the hands of a swordsman called the "hero" and his companions. Delmurin Island became a place where monsters released from the Dark Lord lived. Dai, who is the only human on the island and longs to be a hero, lives in peace with the monsters. However, that life completely changes with the resurrection of the Dark Lord Hadlar. With promises from teachers, encounters with friends, and a destiny that cannot be escaped... In order to save the world, the adventure of Dai and his quest to be a hero begins!

I'm a purist. It's hard for me to set aside my knowledge and memories of the original and appreciate an adaptation without bias... I can deal with changes if they improve upon the original work meaningfully... not so well otherwise. This is the most faithful adaptation I've ever experienced by far. Everything I remembered from the manga was in this anime. Everything that is in this anime was in the manga. To anyone who has read and loved the manga: you can't go wrong with this anime. It's basically the manga but with colors, animations, music, sound effects, and voice acting. It's just that faithful. To anyone who has not read the manga: this is really the ideal mix of shounen adventure and JRPG: - From shounen, it gets funky characters you will love to root for (or hate)... And all sorts of friendships that can overcome incredible odds. And epic battles with plenty of turnarounds. - From JRPG, it gets a deep lore, a coherent magic and skill system, and a consistent and satisfying build-up from level 1 to level MAX. I was about 15 when I read the manga... and most of the characters and scenes were alive in me as I was watching the anime two decades later. A perfect anime adaptation of a masterpiece shounen/JRPG manga. I was so glad to go on this adventure again. I hope a lot of old-timers and new people embark on it too.
