Dragon Half - Recommendations

If you're looking for anime similar to Dragon Half, you might like these titles.

Excel Saga

Excel Saga

F City, F Prefecture: the battleground where good and evil have finally chosen to decide once and for all who will rule the world…or at least that's the general idea! Neither side seems up for the task, as surviving the brutality of everyday life is enough of a chore. On the side of evil is the organization of Across, its only member the loudmouthed and abrasive Excel who struggles just to put food in her stomach; on the side of good, three disenfranchised, unemployed bachelors whose only pursuit in life is romance. Add in alien invasions, jungle warfare, and Mexican immigrant laborers to Japan, and this war doesn't seem likely to be ending soon!

Both main characters are a little on the goofy and energetic side, and both series revel in poking holes in the 'standard'--while Dragon Half focuses on Fantasy though, Excel focuses on anime and entire genres.

VRDave VRDave says...

Both of these are fairly high octane, although Excel Saga is a bit more extreme on that end. Both of these make a lot of parody jokes as well as they are just fun and funny in general and if you liked one, you will definately like the other.

himurakenshin himurakenshin says...

The same spontaneous, hilarios, and bizarre sort of elements can be found in dragon half and excel saga. Whether you're looking for something fun to recover from the last couple volumes of berserk manga, or just value humor and fan service over plot and consistency, i strongly recommend both excel saga and dragon half.

Wazoo Wazoo says...

Ah, psychotic anime humor, where would I be without you? Maybe somewhere other than in this straightjacket typing an anime recommendation with my teeth. But aside from that, Excel Saga and Dragon Half are both hilarious examples of hyperactive anime comedy. They both share elements common to the genre including a fast pace, self-parody, parody of other anime genres and a healthy degree of randomness. Though Excel Sage tends to move at a faster pace and has a higher amount of randomness, those that appreciate the genre will most likely enjoy both titles.

Crazy elfs and weird creatures? This is another mad series ^^ The stories are different but the style of the series is just totally alike. The fun/cute chars and the non serious battles. Both are just two eps and I would say Elf princess Rane is the same as Dragon half except the time era.

sothis sothis says...

Elf Princess Rane and Dragon Half excel at one thing: random hilarious comedy. If you appreciate laughing out loud and wackiness, this is for you!

Canal Canal says...

Elf Princess Rane and Dragon Half are both short OVAs that should have more episodes. They're also funny and they have some crazy situations.

ZetaAspect ZetaAspect says...

Despite how obvious of a recommendation it seems to me, I'm having a surprisingly hard time identifying similarities between Dragon Half and Elf Princess Rane.  Yes, both are early 1990s comedy shows that were cancelled after two episodes, but that hardly seems important.  Dragon Half relies on heavy parody and exaggeration of fantasy cliches ad absurdum.  Elf Princess Rane relies more on sight gags and vast amounts of energy being misdirected, generally causing utter chaos.  Pretty much the only thing they have in common is their slapstick, irreverent, carefree style of comedy.  These shows are far from intelligent or witty.  They're downright silly, and they know it.  However, they never try to force it down your throat; silly is simply the norm.  The ridiculous, nigh-absurd goings-on are almost completely ignored, which adds to the hilarity.  It is this shared environment, in which the extraordinary is ordinary, that allows them to deliver their humor so effectively, efficiently, and refreshingly.

Slayers

Slayers

Meet Lina Inverse, a mighty sorceress who fights evil in the name of... greed, gluttony and black magic?! When she meets Gourry, a swordsman whose skill with the blade is rivaled only by his stupidity, Zelgadis, a grumpy sorceror who's been turned into a golem, and Rezo, a priest known for his benevolence (with a dark secret), you know her adventures are just beginning!

Both share the same fiery and hyperactive type of main characters. They're both set in a fantasy realm, and both tend to be fast-paced and comedic.

HoshiHime HoshiHime says...

When I first watched Dragon Half I immediately thought of Slayers. Slayers is a funny fantasy anime, with dragons, fun silly characters, a slow pretty boy and black magic. Just like Dragon-Half. If you liked Dragon Half I'd really recommend watching Slayers!

MCBigman MCBigman says...

Fantasy setting and Mink looks like some odd fusion of Lina Inverse's body and Naga's fashoin.

herano herano says...

If silly fantasy comedy is your thing, you should check Slayers and Dragon half out. Both parody classic RPGs and fantasy story's and have a strong woman in the lead. Both come from the 90ties and have similar colourful visuals and music. If you like one of them you should try the other out.

Senyuu.

Senyuu.

One day, without warning, a huge hole appeared in the world and demons emerged, ready for battle. Assuming that the demon king sealed by a hero 1,000 years ago must have escaped, the king of the land set forth a decree: the hero’s descendents must defeat evil once more! For Alba, one such would-be hero, this journey will be anything but ordinary given his growing collection of bizarre and wacky companions. Alongside young demon Ruki, age-inappropriate Ruldolf, tentacle-fighter witch Zwei and a host of others, Alba will get arrested, play dodgeball, travel across the land, and least importantly, learn the truth about the hole in the world!

Dragon Half isn't a parody of an RPG per se, but both it and Senyuu focus on all-out slapstick and comedy with a fantasy backdrop and nerdy elements. If you liked one, try out the other.

ChalamiuS ChalamiuS says...

Both Dragon Half and Senyuu are both comedies that take place in a fantasy setting and neither takes themselves very seriously.

Both series are parodies set in a fantasy world, with a lot of slapstick and over the top comedy.

FLCL

FLCL

Naota Nanbada is a boring young boy who leads a boring life in a boring town. His older brother has left for America, and the closest he comes to any excitement is when his deadbeat dad has too much sake. But things change one day when a bizarre girl zooms up to him on a scooter and smacks him in the face with her guitar. What's more, once Naoto returns home he discovers that this strange woman has arrived ahead of him and moved in! Not only does she constantly engage in perverted activities with Naota's father and flirt with the young man himself, but she also claims to be an alien who is searching for the ‘Pirate King.' Now, Naota must learn to live with this new intruder, deal with an odd government agent who sports exceptionally large eyebrows and the mysterious Medical Mechanica, and come to terms with the fact that there are a variety of robots and weapons emerging out of his head - amongst other things. Perhaps boring wasn't so bad after all...

FLCL has a wee bit more meat to it than dragon half and is a bit more demented, but it contains a LOT of the same sort of strange and random humor. Strongly recommend both.

There are many things that Dragon Half and Furi Kuri have in common, such as the craziness of the stories. If you are the kind of person who likes things that don't make sense, so much to the extent that it becomes funny, then both of these shows would be right for you.

Puni Puni Poemy

Puni Puni Poemy

Puni Puni Poemi is a spin-off of Excel Saga, the classic lampoon of all that is anime. It takes the daughter of two Excel Saga characters and puts her through parodies of shoujo, shounen, ecchi, hentai, and everything in-between. This eccentric show is the "Scary Movie" of anime: younger viewers need not apply.

Rar Rar says...

Chrono Trigger and Dragon Half both indulge in poking gentle fun at fantasy conventions, and go for colourful characters over complex plots. If you're after light entertainment without having to think, both should suffice.

OneiChan OneiChan says...

I think if you liked Dragon Half you would find enjoyment in Chrono Trigger as well because even though the plots are very different they share several key elements. These are both light-hearted comedies that you don't have to be serious or thoughtful to watch. They are both short so they are good for a quick laugh. Watch these as a 'pick me up' on a boring day.

Capricorn

cute dragon girls? Capricorn got the same kind of story as Dragon half except that it's more serious and dramatic. Capricorn won't make you laugh as much though this one is also cute. But if you like the dragon girl theme this is absolutely something you should go for.

VRDave VRDave says...

Wow, how suprising to have 2 anime with a main female character who is half dragon/half human. Although Dragon Half is a bit more humorous and the story is completely different, the atmosphere is similar, and both progress through the story the same way.

Azumanga Daioh

Azumanga Daioh

Ten-year-old genius Chiyo, animal-loving Sakaki, loudmouth Tomo, athletic Kagura, weight-conscious Yomi and dim-witted Osaka are six friends who share laughs, good times, and a high school homeroom. With scary (and sometimes perverted) teachers, school festivals, penguin suits and general hilarity abounding, you can be sure that there's never a dull day in the life of one of these students!

Azumanga Daioh and Dragon Half are from different generations of anime. Dragon Half is a lot older, but both are about a girl who hangs out with her friends and gets into trouble. So if you are the type of person who likes watching groups of friends getting into mischief, you should watch both of these anime.

Salahare Salahare says...

Azumanga Daioh and Dragon Half go hand in hand together as anime reserved for those who aren't afraid to be showered in pure random slapstick! They keep you laughing every minute until the end, no matter how much your boyfriend hits you with the couch pillow whenever you suggest watching it.

These two are both just nonsensical shows that will do nothing more than make you laugh until your sides burst. Mink and Shinobu are both pretty airheaded and get into some funny situations, so if you like a random show to make you laugh, this is a definite choice.

FireFlower FireFlower says...

Dragon Half and 2x2 = Shinobuden both share no-sense humor with a lot out of order scenes. '

Dragon Half's strong point is hilarious characters and moments where common logic doesn't work at all.

Shinobuden strong point is Ninja group's no-sense ninja skills and their female discipline who doesn't question anything. Of course you cannot forget that ball of goo with the greatest voice acting ever.
