Both are light, slice-of-life BL anime about high school boys. In given, both boys are in a band, and in Doukyuusei, one of them is in a band. Both have some bittersweet/sad moments, and also many suuuper cute ones. Both feel real.

AnimePixel AnimePixel says...

Given is about two high schoolers who got to know each other through music. It is about a music band and once famous guitar player main character that at first was bored with music, but was forced to teach a guy he just met how to play the guitar. Consisting of a heartbreaking sad back story to how that guitar came to be and why an amateur like him would want to play guitar so badly, this anime might just make many emotional, moving people cry. The main character became more into music again because he was interested in the amateur and was intrigued by his singing voice, thus the main character tries to persuade him to be on his band. This is a very touching anime and I recommend it to BL lovers as this is a story about how a boy heals another boy's heart through music.

They are both genuine. Showing the innoncence of young love and coming of age. Raw emotion. Beautiful character development.

D4e6al D4e6al says...

They both give a sweet tender relationship without the need for sexual encounters. They are both very good at telling the love stories of their respective characters.

Max4444 Max4444 says...

Both are wholesome BL anime with some darker moments. Both start with the main characters not knowing each other, and shows how they got together, how their friendship transforms into a romantic relationship, and some romantic moments.

I wish there was more animes like this one. I loved it so much. I really enjoyed watching this anime because the plot and characters are amazing. I also enjoyed the musical part as well.

The are both very good BL stories. Doukyuusei is more of a shy, sweet, tender, innocent, love story. And yet Given also makes you feel good inside but with added thrills.

Cute and wholesome romantic same sex partner relationship story. I really liked them. The animation and art in both are really good but they are different.

7milkyway 7milkyway says...

Both the animes have the same constructo. One guy is a little shy/has problems socializing, but the other is more outgoing. Nevertheless, both plots have good narratives and the personas grow into the one watching. Beware for the purely smut scenes, only in Umibe no Étranger will they be there.

Evelynnnny Evelynnnny says...

They are both very easy to watch and in terms of bls they are non- sexualised and are so beautifully portrayed. I think they show a good decent representation of a gay relationship and the societal views around lgbtq+ relationships...

Both of these movies are relatively wholesome movies of boys finding out that they are in love with each other and accepting their feelings. They are trying to work through everything but eventually do end up getting together and going through all the drama that comes with a relationship.

I love both of these movies.

If you want another slow-paced BL anime, I suggest this one. Both animes share a sweet and heartwarming atmosphere. Although the art and the personalities of the characters are completely different, they still share the life of two characters who are discovering their feelings. Very refreshing animes.

ToeBeans405 ToeBeans405 says...

Obviously both are BL romance, but besides that both have a similar tone/feel, sort of relaxed and pleasant animation, along with more realistic and healthy relationship development when compared to some other BL.

Evelynnnny Evelynnnny says...

they both have similar story lines as well as relationships. The plot is similar and the characters development is pretty similar too! Both very good LGBTQ+ rep and cute romance.

*this wont be helpful if you're looking for a written recommendation*

i hate that i have to write a recommendation i just think if you like one you might like the other, i cant actually give a whole breakdown of why that is. :'(

anyway one possibly helpful thing i will say, is that i usually watch dub so i can work and im a slow reader, but i really cant watch sasaki and miyano in dub. I know the reason why i dont like the dub but i dont know how to explain it without sounding rude cause im pretty sure its just a personal prefrence thing.

Lots of sweet and heartwarming moments make up both of these shounen-ai anime. The viewer is taken along for an emotional ride as the main couples go through realistic trials and struggles with each other, themselves, and the world around them. The characters in both are very relatable and realistic. Neither anime features rape or sexual assault, which is a refreshing change of pace for BL anime.

Rottenchild Rottenchild says...

Both depict male/male relationships with a focusing On the development of the romance in a school setting. Both feature characters with genuine admiration for one another learning to navigate the obstacles of dating with a light hearted, slice of life-esque tone.

Hitorijime My hero is primarily about a young man bettering himself by overcoming his terse home life and gang affiliation with the help of his older love interest and his friend —the younger bro of the love interest who has his own romantic subplot—with comedic elements and more contemporary cartoonish visual style standard narrative structure.

Doukuusei depicts two young men in an opposites attract story told in a single film broken into four distinct acts. Following mild a mannered honour student and carefree musician as the grew closers over a the course of a year trying in a coming of age narrative. The visual style leans in a more experimental direction with fluid animation juxtaposed with unusual shot composite and movement.

Both are an excellent watch, with Doukyuusei having more artsy poetic bent and Hitorijime My hero a more more of a tradition romance/popcorn show vibe.

Similar in atmoshpere of struggling love between characters. At first, there is one boy who loves the other immensely while the other shows restraint from getting into a relationship. They both have the same ploy, while Kono Danshi is more compact and straight to the point, while Doukyuusei has some extra bits and pieces as well as some extra mellodrama in it's show. They both have happy endings for them, and do prove to allow both couples to enjoy and be able to love each other.

Madiz Madiz says...

Both animes have a large amount of blooming love that occur through them. One of the males protagonists are very straight forward and demanding in the relationship while the other shows restraint and resistance to the idea of beeing together. Both stories contain some of the same elements (such as dealing with female aquaintances). Another characteristic that both share is the drama of fighting over the shy-restraint boy in the relationship from another male, except Junjou's is a little more... impressive. They are both softcore, hence the shounen-ai tag, with Junjou romantica being a little more in depth than what Doukyuusei goes into. If you enjoyed Doukyuusei, you will enjoy the length and story that Junjou Romantica has to it. If you enjoyed Junjou Romantica, you would enjoy the sweet and straight to the point story that Doukyuusei has to offer.

Liz and the Blue Bird

Liz and the Blue Bird

Mizore Yoroizuka plays the oboe, and Nozomi Kasaki plays the flute in Kita Uji High School concert band. As seniors, this will be their last competition together, and the selected piece “Liz and the Blue Bird” features a duet for the oboe and flute. “This piece reminds me of us.” Nozomi says cheerfully, enjoying the solo, while Mizore's usual happiness to play with Nozomi is tinged with the dread of their inevitable parting. By all accounts the girls are best friends, but the oboe and flute duet sounds disjointed, as if underscoring a growing distance between them. Talk of college creates a small rift in their relationship, as the story evolves to reveal a shocking and emotional conclusion
