This review was made while watching the dubbed version of this anime

Story

The story is set in a fictional city called Lisvalletta. The anime is about detectives, which are called the Seven-O, it is about the first MC (Kirill VRUBEL) (who looks like a female) and was a former police officer turned detective that now only participates in cases resolving around this new dangerous drug called 'Anthem'. This happened after he was stuck in a hostage situation. While looking for this lost cat on his day off for his old landlandy. This is where he meets the other MC (Douglas BILLINGHAM) the detective that put in a good word for the first MC to join the Seven-O after that incident.

Anthem is a dark illegal drug that is harmful when taken and this drug is spread across the city as there are people who smuggle them, sell them and distributes them. There are stages that Anthem can do to the human body, each stage above is much dangerous then the last stage turning people into werid monsters that have unique ability hence the Monster-of-the-week tag placed on this anime.

The detectives operate in a buddy system which is the double decter system hence the title of anime. Where each detective has their own partner that can help them out in situations that relate to the drug Anthem. The anime is about cracking down on these Anthem drug lords and taking them out so that they rid the city free. As well as Douglas seeking revenge on Good looking Joe.  However, this is also a comedy so therefore expect a lot of jokes riddled in as the MC's are on their mission.

Animation

The anime has the modern animation look so it has the classic anime look and feel to it. It also has a mixture of CG animation whixh makes it much better,

The outro music video is a mixture of CG animation as the camera pans arounds the characters posing as they look like figurines stacked ontop of each other. With a mixture of possibale hand drawn scences that haven been edited using computers.

Characters - The Main Characters's only

Kirill Vrubel joins the detectives/police force in order to locate his missing 'sister' but in episode six, he eventually finds 'her'. As well as he is kind of dence as he enjoys being Douglas buddy (detective partner) in operactions and sometime screw things up by trying to arrest people he doesn't have jurisdiction over as he is meant to be an Anthem detective and not a regular police officer. He is the goofy character.

Douglas Billingham is a detective that lost his previous partner thus replacing him with a new partner which is Kirill. He is funny as he is amazing/ an (funny type) asshole to Kirill in situations in order to create comedy. He is the type of guy who does not like to talk about himself so therefore he seems mysterious to his comrades. He seems like he has a bone to pick with this dude called Good Looking Joe.

Overall

I'll give this anime an 8.5 as it has good comedy that consists of fourth wall jokes as the narrator intrepts the story to give some incite on the situation. The narrator reminds me of the narrator from the anime We, Without Wings - Under the Innocent Sky. The ending music is bad ass.

It starts off slow but all over the place, yet by the 4 or 5 episode they start to pull it together and by the end you actually have a thought out story.  They definately develop the relationship between Doug and Krill and you can believe the whole team is a family by the end.  If anything I could do without the 4th wall breaks but they gave it a twist most animes don't have.  The anime style could of been a little better.

"Double Decker! Doug & Kirill" is an anime that delves into the buddy cop genre, set in a futuristic city where crime is rampant, and a new drug called Anthem threatens the peace. The story follows the eccentric yet skilled detective Doug Billingham and his enthusiastic, naive partner Kirill Vrubel as they tackle cases for the special crime investigation unit SEVEN-O, which specializes in Anthem-related incidents. Despite its potential for dynamic storytelling and character development, the series has received mixed reviews, indicated by its middling rating.

Highlights

  • Buddy Cop Dynamics: One of the series' strengths lies in the chemistry between Doug and Kirill, whose contrasting personalities and approaches to law enforcement provide both comedic relief and a foundation for deeper character exploration. Their interactions offer a fresh take on the classic buddy cop formula.
  • Stylish Animation and World-Building: The anime features vibrant animation and a well-developed futuristic setting. The cityscape, technology, and overall aesthetic contribute to an immersive world that is both visually appealing and intriguing.

Areas for Improvement

  • Inconsistent Tone and Pacing: "Double Decker! Doug & Kirill" struggles with maintaining a consistent tone, oscillating between serious crime-solving and lighthearted, sometimes slapstick comedy. This inconsistency can affect the overall cohesion of the narrative and viewer engagement.
  • Underdeveloped Supporting Cast: While the focus on Doug and Kirill's partnership is central, the series has been critiqued for not fully developing its supporting characters and their backstories. This lack of depth can make the world of SEVEN-O feel less compelling and diminish the impact of its team dynamics.

Missed Opportunities

  • Exploration of Themes: The series sets up several interesting themes, including the implications of drug abuse, the morality of law enforcement, and the complexities of justice in a high-tech society. However, there's a sense that these themes are not explored as thoroughly as they could be, leaving potential narrative depth untapped.
  • Narrative Complexity and Resolution: Some viewers have noted that the plot can feel convoluted, with twists and revelations that don't always pay off satisfactorily. The resolution of certain story arcs and the overarching threat of Anthem might leave audiences wanting more clarity and impact.

Conclusion "Double Decker! Doug & Kirill" presents an entertaining yet flawed foray into the buddy cop genre, set against a backdrop of futuristic crime-fighting. While it shines in its dynamic lead duo and visual presentation, the series falls short in delivering a consistently engaging narrative, fully realized character arcs, and a deep exploration of its thematic potential. Despite these shortcomings, fans of action-packed, character-driven stories may still find enjoyment in the adventures of Doug and Kirill, even if the series doesn't fully capitalize on its initial promise.

This is serious competition entry for the title of gayest anime of all time.

There is plenty of such stuff in this genre like Free (purely platonic uber-gay swimmer fantasy) and many, many others like: Supernatural book detectives - some kind of weird gay-ass reverse harem, Yona of the Dawn - gay-ass reverse harem and so on.

Naturally it's about cool good looking guy and cute good looking guy bonding and sharing brotherly love and solve cases together as police officers. Ie. quality yaoi material to help put your friendly neighbour fujoshi to sleep by sheer amount of ecstasy by romaticizing about these two good looking*cute guys hitting it off together. Few other interesting men (and youthful boys) are provided, for your leisure, to join a potential maintrain in a gang-bang. But remember girl, we never state this explicitly, only in your girl dreams (and when cuddled comfortably alone under your blanked in the evening, when reaching for a little button that means fire) - got it girl? Good!

Main target demographic of this kind of work in japan are young heternormative women, with fetishistic penchant for romantic relationship among men. Because female sexuality works, at least to us men, in very mysterious ways, and IT IS NOT "shallowly" visually driven same way as ours (all you need to give horny incel otaku boners, is to flash panties of few female characters Cutey Honey-style few times and jiggle some tits here and there, and they are overly content), the anime has to go through various motions with these males. Betrayal, growing close, petty drama, bitching around and stuff like that, that only women understand, why it makes them feel hot.

Here, Doug is the naturally confident top and is cute Kyrill undecided bottom. Rest of the story revolves from this construction.

Now, why as a normal, non-gay dude, you would be interested in such kind of show?

Well let me drop a bomshell for you. It's anime industry biggest secret, and ironclad rule, that female characters in these so called gay shows, are surpisingly more varied and better done, than in non-gay show!

Maybe it has something to do with non-gay part of animantion team trying to keep sanity, by making interesting female characters (to act ass counterbalance to all those hot "gay" men), or maybe in case animation team working compeltely under rainbow flag, I guess gays are jsut better overall at expressing disctinct female characters, because they are not so overloaded by their male sexual urges, and can actually concetrate on females as humans, and not just a walking plotdevice with hole between the legs and with tits and breathing hole for a mouth, spouting deus ex machina lines.

And due to the given rule/characteristic, we get most varied, iconic and memorable cast of women I saw in a quite a long time. We get over the top super-competetive-agresive lipstick girl Deana, we get super-tomboyish biker girl Maxine (with a thing for grenade launchers), uberflirty "dumb" secretary Sophie, super sexy and silent yet direct to the point android Robo (Yui).

Similarly Yona and the chick in book detectives are straight wife material, so is female boy body fetishist redhead in Free (imagine being tall muscular ikemen dude swimmer - that girl would not refuse invitation to go home with you, to your room, where she would literally lick all your muscles and massage you back and buttocks and would not refuse licking your abs - the would not love but would still love you).

And that is why you should watch gay ass shows like this and others like it even if you are not gay.
