Dororo and Demon Slayer both are quite similar. Both are historical anime. The protagonists slay demons. Also both protagonists has a companion for travel.

AnnaSartin AnnaSartin says...

"Dororo" and "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba" are both anime series set in historical Japan and feature a teenage boy who goes around slaying demons in the hopes of righting a great wrong that was done and restoring something that was taken from them. They have a similar feel to them overall, and if you like one of these shows there is a very good chance you'll probably like the other as well.

Hutai Hutai says...

Japan, demons vs humans, main character who has big losses in life.  Decent main character development, good animation. Both MC's have a companion ( Dororo and Nezuko).

ForeverGlows ForeverGlows says...

two similar concepts with different stories, if you like one you'll probably like the other.

arieana arieana says...

same theme that hero struggle to be the strongest fighter that can kill demon/monters in their world.

Mayank Mayank says...

Both of these shows are very similar to each other if compared with each other based on their themes. So bulleting their similarities seems appropriate.

  • Set in historical Japan
  • Demons and demon slayers
  • Curse of a demon(s) and a journey to seek its cure
  • Swordfights and satisfying action scenes (a lot of those)
  • Two main characters going on a journey to attain their goals

While story wise they are a lot different, in spirit, both of these shows are sure to be liked by someone who liked at least one of them.

shivang31 shivang31 says...

Both have a similar premise where the MC defeats the Demons albeit for different purposes but you will certainly love both of them. Both stories are strong and have great character developments.

Kakajoju Kakajoju says...

Dororo and DS are both demon-slaying anime. They take place in historical Japan and the protagonist is accompanied by someone who's like a sibling to them (in DS it's literally his sibling tho)

KatytheCat55 KatytheCat55 says...

Dororo and Demon Slayer are both historical anime set in the samurai(or demon slayer) era. The main characters(Dororo, Tanjiro) are quite different but both likable. I would say that Demon Slayer has a more defined plot whereas Dororo is more of just wandering around fighting demons to gain back Hyakkimaru's body parts. Although for Demon Slayer, I will say it takes more time to fully get interested in the plot and understand what is happening. Both of the animations are amazing and at a high standard, even for modern-day. The style in Dororo is more traditional and has a low use of colors with a gray-tone throughout the whole series. Either way, if you enjoy one of these you are most likely the enjoy the other just as much.

QueenSkull QueenSkull says...

They are different from each other, yet similar in a weird sense.

They both got that magical element in it that I personally love. In Demon Slayers, it's... well... demons. In Dororo, there is demonic curses and very much slaughter in a samurai era.

I liked Demon Slayer extremely much, and Dororo is yet another golden apple I was lucky to take a bite off.

Watch a couple of episodes to see if the story is something for you.

JordanJas JordanJas says...

Both of these shows feature our main characters going around the land slaying demons. While they may be for different reasons they also both have a small one accompanying them. Both are set in feudal times (I think) and use swords. Both are looking for a type of power to help them. Both have a family loss and devastation, while also finding new relationships along the way. Both are newer anime that have good animation styles that would appeal to a wide range of people. I think if you like one you would like the other.

xtashahaha xtashahaha says...

Dororo(2019) is a masterpiece that is not everyone's cup of tea. However, the feudal era setting, the empowered MC who has a personal vendetta, and the idea of defeating demons are common threads between the two anime.

Tankdan1003 Tankdan1003 says...

I think that if you watched Dororo you should watch Demon Slayer. I say this because both anime is about a main character who slays demons because they took something away from them. They fight to try to stop the evil that is affecting thier worlds. I strongly recommend these anime.

Rutrum Rutrum says...

They both seem kinda similar to eachother. They are both about demon hunters and quite bloody. even though Dororo is a bit darker, i definitely recommend both of them

bwoop bwoop says...

They have a smiliar concept to both, yet each are unique in their own ways. They both involve the main protagonist fighting demons with a companion alongside them.

vray117 vray117 says...

both are great anime with similar concepts following different ideas but watching them both is worth it

cotyy cotyy says...

Both shows focus on the MC haunting demons to take back something. Both have tragic backstory, although Dororo is a bit more brutal than Kimetsu no Yaiba. Kimetsu has more lively colors, Dororo has more of a gray hue.

Crabbo Crabbo says...

both have similar settings, characters and plot but at the same time stand out on their own.

TheCautionBandi TheCautionBandi says...

Both have that Feudal Japan samurai vibe to it. Though Dororo is a lot darker than Demon Slayer, and has a way darker look on Feudal Japan, I'd recommend them both ways.

CyanideOwl CyanideOwl says...

Dororo was good at the start but it's explanation is awful and doesn't make sense. Manga is much better.

I don't know why people recommend to watch this after kimetsu. It's like hell and heaven in comparison.

ilyanime ilyanime says...

they both are set in a traditonal/in the past setting and both deal with demons or non-human monsters. Not only that but they both go through mini arcs, travel, help other people along the way to reached their long-term goal. Oh and they both have travel buddies! :p

CodexScript CodexScript says...

Beautifully animated, demon slaying anime with an excellent balance of action,  adventure,  sorry,  and emotional depth.

plutoniantoad plutoniantoad says...

the character dynamics between Dororo and Hyakkimaru are similar to the ones of March and Fushi.

The stories are different, Dororo is more historical while to your eternity is more melancholic

RobertDJunior RobertDJunior says...

Dororo and To Your Eternity, revolve in a similar environment. It's like they were made by the same artisit. Strongly recommend both.

GATAX GATAX says...

Dororo and To your eternity have similar feeling in them. They are from history and supernatural. The both anime aims at how the main character grows and learning a new things and feelings.

Jujucat Jujucat says...

I agree with this massively because when I first watched it I automatically thought dororo. To your eternity It's about a thing(kind of a boy?) who happens to be immortal and going on an adventure with a young girl. It's a very sad story like dororo as well. Hyakkimaru ( from dororo ) and Fushi from to your eternity are very much alike, they don't really talk nor feel full emotions at the very start , they are also both powerful. Highly recommend

yogimisio yogimisio says...

In both shows Hyakkimaru and Fushi learn about the, feelings, other people and themsleves. They travel and find out about more life and the meaning of it. Also similar thing I noticed is a happy kid who befriends them, helpes them and tries to make them understand about significant stuff. But still, the key phrase is character development I think

nyanlu nyanlu says...

The protagonist sets on a journey to (re)gain his humanity(?). He meets a helpful child, and many other good and bad people along the way. He experiences seemingly ordinary things for the first time in his life: smells, sights, tastes, cold and hot temperatures. He learns how to speak and read and write in his teen(???) years.

azarathmz1 azarathmz1 says...

Both beautifully animated shows with amazing original stories. The main characters are learning from scratch how to live like human beings, or are trying to get themselves together. They meet wonderful people on the way but, I warn you, do not get attached.

FullmetalDragon FullmetalDragon says...

Barely human main characters slowly learn how to be a person through interactions with the people around them, both are kinda dark but thoroughly enjoyable

Forced by circumstance to work together for survival, the unlikely duo forge a tenuous friendship that is threatened all too soon when Kotarou's pursuers thrust the two into a dizzying whorl of clashing ambitions between men both big and small. Dororo reminded me alot of the movie Sword of the stranger, mostly because there's a strong samurai and a brave child traveling together in both. They feel quite similar and have lots of action, swordfights and a great story. Overall, they both are amazing in their own way and a definitely must watch!

Same era, dark atmoshpere, lots of fighting and action, great soundtracks. Duo traveling and fighting together, protecting each other erc.

Familiar edo-era set anime, both with a lot of brutal swordfighting action and a notable relationship between a young theif and a ronin, in both shows. Sword of the Stranger likely being inspired by Dororo.

Both of these anime have a samurai who travels with a young kid during an old era. Dororo and The Sword of the Stranger both have amazing action, interesting stories, and great characters. Greatly recommend both of them!

Both shows have a similar premise (a child traveling with a swordsman), and are set in similar old-time Japan eras. Both have lots of violent fights and action scenes, while also touching on themes of what it means to be human in a brutal/violent/hopeless world.

Small child adopts a sword wielding guy with a traumatic past and together they travel through feudal Japan. Dark stories and lots of cute character bonding moments, an easy recommend

Mushishi

Mushishi

It isn't unusual for a person to feel that the world around them is strange and has unexpected secrets lying just beyond their sight. However, for most people this is just an occasional sensation that greets them upon awakening or chases them into sleep. For the mushi researcher Ginko, it isn't a feeling at all; it is a knowledge which guides his travels and motivates his life. Found in the cracks between what is conceivable and what is not, are the varied life forms collectively known as mushi. They surround us and affect us, but their intensely different nature makes them unrecognizable to most. Ginko brings these life forms into perspective for the lives of those most affected and most in need of an explanation.

After watching Mushishi, I started looking for more supernatural anime that took place in old fashioned Japan, and I gotta say Dororo was what I was looking for. Like Dororo and Hyakkimaru, Our protagonist Ginko, travels through the mountains, forests and even more scenics of Japan. Although Ginko's journey is more aimless, he is researching a special subcategory of life called Mushi that only some people can see.

Mushishi is a lot more chill than Dororo with little to no violence and it's very episodic. It's a show that's good for relaxation and it makes you feel good.

Both shows are centered around travelers going from place to place and helping people around them. They both involve people with mysterious powers and pasts and finding their destinies.

Calming moments. A world filled with mysticism and supernatural beings. A test on your way of life and beings who test others life. Kinda philosophical.

Mushi-shi is like the pacifist version of Dororo. Mushi-shi is more episodic, and Dororo is more of a contiguous story, though.

Violet Evergarden

Violet Evergarden

Her one friend and protector was Major Gilbert, who named the girl, taught her how to speak and write, and cared for her. There, she trains to become an Auto Memories Doll: a person who writes letters for others, deciphering their true feelings and expressing it on paper. As Violet travels the world, she helps her clients find love and comfort through the letters she writes; but more importantly, she slowly begins to understand emotions, so that she can finally cope with what she’s done, and what she’s lost.

Hutai Hutai says...

Though they're both really different, both MC's are trying to understrand what it is to be a human. They go through a harsh past, being an all fighting weapon and as they grow and live, they meet people that show them the different way of living.

WarningNamed WarningNamed says...

Violet Evergarden's main character goes through a drastic character change throughout the show as she realizes what feelings are.

Dororo's character also goes through drastic changes as he realizes the importance of friendship as he tries to get his body back.

In this way, the characters in both shows are somewhat similar.

FizzyMilk FizzyMilk says...

Goodness, I cried during both of them. They both have very different plotlines but I would definitely recommend watching Violet Evergarden if you've seen Dororo and vice versa.

ArsonicToad ArsonicToad says...

Even though they are different genres, you can truely feel the emotions that are drawed out and they both can definetly make you sob your eyes out. Not only that but the main characters both have very similar issues.

rammyramramram rammyramramram says...

While Dororo is action and Violet Evergarden is first and foremost a drama. That said, both feature a protagonist who never learned to express their emotions. They spent their lives just being a weapon, and their respective journies are to find the humanity they'd never outwardly had. They aim to characterize these "tools" as being humans with value, and urge the viewer to empathize with them despite an unbecoming appearance of their emotions.

Both are historical stories with deep themes of growth and what it means to be warior or demon, both protagonists are obsessed with their goals.

But both series are disimilar in the fact that dororo is episodical and vinland saga is not.

Also neither shies away from showing blood but they use it for realisms sake not for show.

Both protagonist have a tragic background giving them a reason to fight something. Dororo has supernatural elements, but the story still feels real. Vinland saga doesn't have any supernatural elements and contains historical figures.

geisha geisha says...

Both, Inuyasha and Hyakkimaru are antiheroes, both share a tragic back story and are accompanied by a "good" main/side character as are Kagome and Dororo.

Both series are on the episodic side, but follow an overarching story and ultimate goal. In both they encounter, fight and defeat mythical demons.

They both also have a sprinkle of romance, but it's not the main focus of the story.

Chitaka Chitaka says...

Both Dororo and InuYasha are somewhat episodic in nature. And while InuYasha is way lighter all around they both focus on traveling feudal Japan killing demons to regain something stolen by them: jewel shards in InuYasha and body parts/senses in Dororo. Both Hyakkimaru and Inuyasha struggle internally with a "demonic" side of themselves, though this is much more literal in InuYasha. While watching the monster-of-the-week type episodes of Dororo I just got this very strong nostalgic feeling back to seeing those types of weekly stories in InuYasha.

lenlenlia lenlenlia says...

Inuyasha is one of my favorite animes and while watching Dororo it reminded me of it. Both have demons/monsters and someone travelling and killing them, also both are historical and supernatural animes. I love both of them and they're easily 5/5.

Samurai Champloo

Samurai Champloo

Samurai Champloo is all about style, from the dj-style scratching scene changes to the hip-hop-inspired soundtrack to the eclectic character design. Mugen's fighting style is a funky meld of capoeira and limb-cutting, and Jin is the dramatic foil; he is all steel and old-school samurai style. What binds them together is the desire to test each other's abilities, and a promise to a girl named Fuu: to find the samurai that smells of sunflowers, who plays a pivotal role in her past. Together they travel through edo-era Japan, finding battle and comedy wherever they stop.

Samurai Champloo got great music and an amazing atmosphere so you should definitely watch it at least once in your lifetime!

They're both amazing classic samurai animes that are filled with the most realistic samurai techniques & good plots as well. Both are emotional & heart-reaching journeys to search for what they want the most their in hearts. I would also say that it doesn't romanticize or glamorize the samurai era & the red light entertainment district either, but instead it highlights the cruelty & educates the audiences as well.
