I'm making this a one way recommendation because Gungrave is way, way, WAY better than Dogs on all levels. It has a cohesive story, better animation and overall is far more engaging. If you liked the gritty crime elements of Dogs, check out the far superior Gungrave.

DeathCrunch DeathCrunch says...

Although GunGrave is far longer and deeper (at the moment) the series hold common elements in gang warefare, loyalty and betrayal.

The diffrence comes in the latter half of GunGrave being somewhat sci-fi infected and Dog's being more comedy centered at some points.

Though the first OVA of Dogs might as well be a direct rip it's so similar.

NimirRa NimirRa says...

Though not necessarily equal in quality (though both shows are good), these two share the similar themes of loyalty and betrayal; people with dark pasts in rough situations and the ways they chose to overcome their plights.

Baccano!

Baccano!

It's the 1930s, and Mafia groups fight for supremacy in American cities. Young Firo joins the secretive Camorra group; a meek street boy, Jacuzzi, finds himself the leader of a gang of thugs; an alchemist is producing a liquor of immortality, and a homunculus tries to retrieve it; and upbeat thieves Isaac and Miria head to New York after failing to strike gold in California. They ride the novel train, the Flying Pussyfoot, across the continent. However they find themselves embroiled in a ruckus caused by gangs, terrorists, serial killers, and others as multiple stories intertwine and unfold on this fateful ride. All are haunted and hunted by the legendary Rail Tracer...

Similar stories of guns and gangs, told in a similar sporadic and non-linear fashion.

Both feature large casts and focus on one persons story at a time. Though one story always crosses over with another.

Good for both fans of non-linear story telling and  mafioso type anime.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both Baccano! and Dogs are heavy with life-of-crime/mafia elements, though done with tounge in cheek and they both sport a colourful cast of characters. The storytelling is similar, as well.

If you liked one for that reason you should check out the other.

JAhU JAhU says...

If you liked the third episode of Dogs, you should check Baccano. They do feel alike, but I can't quite explain why.

Black Lagoon

Black Lagoon

Kidnapped, he discovers to his dismay that his employers' main concern is to ensure the documents don't get into the wrong hands, even if it means sending the carrier to the bottom of the sea. Now, with his former life ruined and his kidnappers seeming comparatively friendly, "Rock" decides to join their merry band of mercenaries, and sets out with a new career to the shadier corners of the South China Sea.

If you found one of these show's (very stylized) gangster action coupled with more introspective parts where the characters backgrounds and motivations are explored appealing you might want to check out the other one.

ChalamiuS ChalamiuS says...

These two shows are quite similar in that they deal with the dark (criminal) side of society. Both of them also follow a small number characters whose past (and present) are explored.

If you liked the concept of this show (following people in the underworld) you'll enjoy Black Lagoon.

BLuigi BLuigi says...

Black Lagoon and Dogs: Bullets & Carnage both have a very similar feeling and art style. Both have a ton of gun fights and insane characters such as Revy and Badou. The tone is similar in both as well. Black Lagoon is much better, but fans might want to check out Dogs: Bullets & Carnage as well due to the amount of similarities.

Nocturnalgloria Nocturnalgloria says...

Dogs and Togainu take place in highly violent urban environments where crime runs rampant. As such, both casts battle in a shady underground with danger never far. Dogs has an element of comedy to the hopeless mood but both cover the same ground in that they do not shy from dark themes. It should be mentioned that Togainu suffers from severe animation issues, unfortunately.

Melodux Melodux says...

Both Dogs and -NoChi deal with the underground of futuristic cities. They both are animated using gray tones, giving the whole thing a "gray look" {it's always raining, or is cloudy in both animes}. The plots are darker and deal with gloomy themes such as being able to kill another person and moral values. I recomend the Dogs manga more than the OVA, because you get to go more in-depth, and a forewarning, -NoChi was supposed to be made after the BL game. But overall, I think that if you like one, you should give the other a shot.

Kite

DeathCrunch DeathCrunch says...

The third OVA of Dogs (Blade Maiden) and Kite could basically be the same anime.

Without giving to much away, the girls situations for becoming assassins are near identical and both series have a creepy rapist person.

Which is the only reason not to watch Kite, as it does feature graphic sex scenes though it doesn't detract from the show.

Defiantly a Kite >Dog's rec, reverse is hazy.

Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop

Hoping to escape their past, they live on the spaceship Bebop, but it's a dangerous business and old enemies don't forget easily. Will they be able to help each other though their respective struggles, or is their fate really inevitable?

Dogs:B&C and Cowboy Bebop are fun action-romps that feature style over substance. Also, the main characters from each are the cool/jaded older guy, the sexy badass chick, the hot guy with a mysterious past, and the red-headed comedic relief.

Highly stylised series that feature a melencholic gun for hire with a tragc past.

Both have a master/student relationship built along the same lines of vengence and blame.

Dark and brutal, these stories share common themes. Of course there are killings, and people are addicted to cigarettes, and there are humanmade "dolls". Also, each show has a detective who gets into trouble. I just think there are similarities here.

Gunslinger Girl
