At this point, I am off the hook.  Whether or not the fifth Detective Conan OVA  The Target is Kogoro! is the all-time worst is moot.  The sixth OVA, Follow the Vanished Diamond: Conan and Heiji vs. KID (TMS Entertainment, 2006) has taken the uncoveted place of last in quality.  It wouldn't be by much since the plot line pursues the thief in much the same way.  You blunder upon the thief more than allow the clues to lead you to him.  It was the sixth OVA's obvious fanservice for the fan of the mystery boy that done it in.  A clumsy story with weak resolution., blundering on a jewel thief by the sketchiest of clues ... voice recognition. The title of the OVA should have been Conan and Heiji vs. the Cameo Kid.  Using only the fact that the perpetrator had a voice much like Heiji's was the only clue to count on.  The fact that Conan was put on the case via a wrong number, equally infeasible.  A ransomed jewel yielded the passing of a fake, which the owner should have recognized from the first (you pay ten million yen ransom, you better check up on the authenticity of the gem).  But the resolution of Kaito Kid catching a tossed away jewel by the most miraculous of catches .... Let me warm up for this foible. OOOOOOHHHHHH   PPPPUUUULLLEEEEEZZZZZEEEE! Relax Conan fans.  The capricious KID returns the gem to the rightful owner due to the sincerity of his heart.  So, could we say that this OVA was done just for the laughs.  The allusions to Heiji's labored Kansai accent (the translators offered a couple of notes concerning how the Osaka teen butchers standard Japanese) has only so much selling power.  The strained chain of flimsy clues, the use of the media to set up a trap for the perp, and the too predictable ending (we were promised KID, but making the phantom thief the hero ... sigh!) just made this OVA a clunker. But the animation still shows the progress TMS Entertainment was making in the middle years of the franchise.  It was blurry and the character of Heiji and Kazuha appeared faint in comparison to what I've seen in the recent episodes (I'm working through the episodes around the last third of the 800's).  Up to now, the OVAs don't involve murder, but neither does it dwell on the Organization and Conan's quest to become Kudo Shinichi once more. It's just the nature of OVAs to idle away the time, but it may run the risk of wasting mine.  Just remember, it's for the fans.  And animators just want to have fun.
