It was pure dumb luck that I viewed the eleventh episode of Magic Kaito (TMS Entertainment, 2012) and this OVA Conan and Kid and Crystal Mother (TMS Entertainment, 2004) on the same evening.  It is essentially the same adventure, traveling on a train to Osaka with the queen of the Ingram Empire (where's that?  somewhere in mythical Europe ... close to France, I guess) with the large topaz necklace as Kid's target.  Kid must discover the secret hiding place of the gem and deal with the queen's son, whom she has been overly strict since the death of the king.  All the prince wants is the respect of one who will use his resources to protect mother and realm. These treatments of the same story call for radical changes.  For the OVA, add Conan and Ran to the passenger list.  In the Magic Kaito series, Conan doesn't make many or any appearances, though he seems to be the emcee for all the episodes (in the Magic Kaito 1412 production, Conan bothers Kid three separate times).  In the Magic Kaito Epi12, Kid battles the international jewel thief Spider, assisted by the thug Snake.  In the OVA, Kid needs to take down Snake (whom Conan identifies as the "Jackal') while Conan saves the queen from the notorious assassin Rose.  Beyond these tweaks, the plot runs close in similarity.  The only other point of notice is that the characters Kaito and Aoko pass Conan and Ran in the train station without anybody noticing their rival/nemesis. Remember, the OVA came first.  And it is apparent in the animation.  One can clearly see the progress in the character design over the eight years.  And Magic Kaito makes the case that the characters of Kaito and Conan's adult persona Shinichi Kudo as well as Ran and Aoko are almost doppelgangers (Ran is the girl with the Prussian helmet-like spike in her hair ... FYI).  The fourth Conan OVA uses darker coloration to give an intensity to the story, and accidentally seeing it twice in the same night only emphasizes the progress made in the Case Closed: Detective Conan franchise.  But for the OVA, the music did not stand out.  A story of a gem sought by two phantom thieves with similar motivations, and a story of a mother needing to mellow out as she tries to maintain a 'remember, I’m your majesty' appearance ... it makes for a good show. Two times over.
