Working!!

Working!!

Self-professed lover of all things small and cute, Souta Takanashi finds himself dragooned into working at the Wagnaria family restaurant by the diminutive and vivacious Poplar Taneshima. Though the pay is reasonable and the clientele polite, the high school student is often at his wits' end when dealing with the quirky staff. If the indifferent and street-tough manager, katana-carrying floor chief, and terminally weak Poplar weren't enough, Souta frequently fears for his life, as every encounter with the violently androphobic Inami ends in injury. How long can he survive before the combined stress and harm do him in?

So, I heard you like workplace humor. With maybe some eccentric characters? Have I got a show for you! While Wagneria!! doesn't have the overt otaku pandering that Denki-gai trades in, the cast of slightly-off part-timers and overbearing management has an equally entertaining ensemble dynamic.

Both are fun slice of life centered around a workplace with zero school-life aspects.  Denki-gai is a bit more raunchy and otaku-focused, whereas Working!! (and Working!) are aimed at a wider audience, but both are good watches.

These shows are structurally similar, have similar content, and similar abience. Fans of Denki-gai's cast of hilarious archetypes will find Doujin Work's equally eccentric cast both familiar and funny. In addition the 4-koma pacing of Doujin Work lines up well with the quick punchlines of Denki-Gai no Honya-san. In short if you can't get enough manga-related interpersonal humor give Doujin Work a shot.

Both show heavily capitalize on extracting gags through invoking vicarious shame through extensive teasing and putting characters through uncomfortable events. Both shows also touch upon topics of sexual nature with Hen Zemi going into explicit details.

The main differences between the shows is the explicitness of the sexual content of Hen Zemi compared to the more moderate Denki-Gai no Honya san. Furthermore Honya-san contains some minor romance elements (moreso than Hen Zemi) and is set in a worklife setting as opposed to a school life setting and focuses more on this theme in general.

Both series are based around a bookstore, the employees that work there, and the perils of the job. If you enjoy Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san then I highly recommend Denki-gai no Honya-san as they're similar... minus the otherworldly-ness of the characters in Gaikotsu, of course. Denki-gai, however, is slightly more wacky in the comedy department where Gaikotsu is more laid back. But, if you enjoyed one series you may find enjoyment in the other as well.
