animemiz animemiz says...

There is an omnipotent presence of AI as a negative factor in both series, which helps to assist the characters or brings out the worst of human society. In Denno Coil, in order to gain more weapons or protection barriers, characters hack into the controlling AI world; whereas in Serial Experiments Lain, the world is influenced directly by AI technology.

hurin hurin says...

Lain and Denno Coil both center around the idea of an upper artificial layer of the real world - a sort of super internet.

The protagonist in both anime is an adolescent girl, but Lain is intended for a more advanced audience than Denno Coil.

Jarudin Jarudin says...

Denno Coil and Lain both feature human/machine interaction. There's a fair chance that if you watched either of these series you'll like the technology aspect. Children are very quick at adapting to new technologies, especially if they grow up with it.

ahuman ahuman says...

Honestly, these series have almost the exact same premise approached from slightly different angles with wildly different feels. The world of Lain is dark and distorted, and the main villain is what lies inside. Coil's world is a child's world: light and sunny, but with things that defy understanding. They both craft these worlds lovingly (with a side of moe), and they both do it extremely well.

Ruether Ruether says...

Lain is an important forerunner to Denno Coil within the genre. Watching them together, it is interesting to see how much both real technology and technological imagination have changed within a single decade.

FreebooterFox FreebooterFox says...

Both anime take a look at the future of computing and interacting with the worldwide web, while effortlessly pointing out that there is an incredible power to be had with technology. These anime show us how the internet (or some derivitave of it) will evolve to become part of our everyday environment, and at the same time will demonstrate what kind of problems this path might give to mankind.

If you're the type of person who wants to maintain a different personality, how would you incorporate that behavior into an internet that reaches into real life? Should doing something in real life have consequences online, or vice versa? At what point does the imaginary become truly real?

All of these things are examined and several ideas are presented to the audience in a way that is entertaining, subtle and informative even to those not knowledgeable on the subject.

IDDKyewD IDDKyewD says...

Both anime play with the line between the internet and the real world. Characters regularly break the boundry in both series and if you've seen one, you will probably like the other!

chocobolily chocobolily says...

The central idea behind Serial Experiments Lain and Denno Coil revolves around augmented reality (otherwise known as AU.)  Though the tone and animation styles are completely different, many similar ideas are presented in these shows about the intangibility of the virtual world.  The main characters also happen to be young, timid girls.  SEL and Denno Coil are quite unlike anything else I've ever seen, with interesting, well-executed premises.

mmag13 mmag13 says...

Lain and Dennou Coil both deal with futuristic technology, and how the line can blur between actual reality and virtual reality.  Lain is definitely more psychological and metaphorical in its development.  Dennou Coil is a bit easier to understand.

There's a reason Denno Coil is referred to as "Miyazaki does cyberpunk". Both Spirited Away and Denno Coil excel at showing us the cute and quirky underbelly of a hidden world. While Denno Coil is definitely cyberpunk at its core, it and Spirited Away have a remarkably similar feel; even the character designs look the same. If you liked one, you'd definitely like the other.

Michichan Michichan says...

Although Spirited Away has more of a fairytale feel than Dennou Coil, fans of Dennou Coil certainly enjoy the adventures of Chihiro in Spirited Away.

Both series have an almost mystical feeling to them. Each have excellent character interactions that make you feel as if you actually know them.

Releashi Releashi says...

If you love the skewed perspective of children you will like both Denno Coil and Spirited Away. They remind you how exciting, scary and utterly isolated from adults the world was.

Fei Fei says...

Both Denno Coil and Spirited away are my favorite childhood animes. The animation, the characters, the values are all so similar and absolutely lovably weird. If you know what I'm talking about, then you should definitely take a look at this series/movie.

papereels papereels says...

There's definitely a striking similarity in the animation between the modernized and cybernetic Denno Coil and the more traditional and magical Spirited Away. The main heroes are children and they grow emotionally while dealing with the concept of two merging worlds and interacting with the supporting cast involved such as the ederly, the pets and the "mystical creatures" (represented in their own context).

Both stories left a deep and warm impression on me, which is why I think you'll appreciate both.

My Neighbor Totoro

Each series is about children who are living an adventure every day. The characters in Denno Coil seem to highly emulate the characters in My Neighbor Totoro, such as Mai from Totoro and Kyoko from Denno Coil.  Also the animation resembles the style and quality of Hayao Miyazaki's movies.  You will find that if you love the characters from one, then you will like the characters from the other.

Himitsu Himitsu says...

Denno Coil definitely gives the same "feel" as Tonari no Totoro. The main perspectives are of young girls, and there's definitely a mysterious factor in both titles. Watching these give you an enchanting feeling as if you're soaring through the skies (yes, I'm corny); you'll also be introduced to some cute and furry fluffballs.

Michichan Michichan says...

Any fan of Dennou Coil will find the art and adventure of a Miyazaki film such as My Neighbor Totoro. Also, fans will find an uncanny similarities between Yasako and Kyoko of Dennou Coil and Satsuke and Mei of My Neighbor Totoro.

globalwild globalwild says...

While the tone of Dennou Coil is more existential, there are definite similarities between it and My Neighbor Totoro. Both anime have a focus on the relationship between young sisters. My Neighbor Totoro leans more towards fairytale, while Dennou Coil is more science fiction, but the relationship between daily life and the “other” world in both anime are similar as well. It may not be a sure bet that if you like one you'll like the other, but both have a unique charm about them.

Both Haibane Renmei and Denno Coil deal with a group of young characters that interacts with each other.  The characters maintain a balance of seriousness and comedy that creates a very realistic feel throughout both series.  Each has plenty of adventure and mystery mixed in, along with a whole entire new would that you get to learn about.  If you like slice of life stories, these are right for you.

ahuman ahuman says...

While Denno Coil and Haibane Renmei have very little in common in terms of setting, they both have a very similar feel. The stories develop mostly through character interaction instead of plot points, and they seem to cover similar themes: loss and forgiveness.

Nocturnalgloria Nocturnalgloria says...

Haibane Renmei and Denno Coil may seem very different at first glance, HR taking place in an environment deprived of modern technology while DC focuses on the borders between reality and the internet but the spirit of both shows is remarkably similar. Both deal with young female leads who must learn how to adjust to unusual circumstances surrounded by mystery in a world where things are not as they at first may seem. The original take on this theme is enhaced by thoughtful moments and a subdued but very lush artwork. What truly seals the deal in establishing a kinship between the two titles is the relationship between two young girls: a certain emotional healing takes place in HR and DC, providing excellent character development through and through.

Noein: To Your Other Self

Reasons you might like Noein: To Your Other Self...

poetax poetax says...

Both series fit within the sci fi category, and deal with a group of young children.  While Noein has more serious undertones than Denno Coil, each have elements of comedy while still retaining a very realistic feeling with complex and true characters.  If quality animation is something you look for, these series are for you.

Nocturnalgloria Nocturnalgloria says...

Denno Coil and Noein tell rather unconventional stories in which children must deal with extraordinary circumstances such as a cybernetic world that mingles with reality in the first case and time travel in the second case. In both cases, a different dimension threatens to bring about destruction and the possibilities that arise from the existence of different worlds is handled in an intelligent and highly original way. For a fresh take on sci-fi themes with out of the ordinary character designs and very fluid animation these titles are a must see.

Htieks Htieks says...

First of all, technology and mystery are importantfeatures that these two anime share, along with a somewhat supernatural feeling thrown in the mix. However, what makes the resemblance particularly striking is the choice of characters: they're children who face both the unknown and weird events (either in a cybernetic space or in an alternate future dimension) and the more "normal" problems they find during their lives; thus, while they're mainly sci-fi stories, both anime have a lot to do with growing and accepting reality. So, if you're looking for some of these elements, Noein and Denno Coil are perfect choices.

Cetonis Cetonis says...

Dennou Coil and .hack//SIGN both take place in a virtual sort of world, which give them quite a few common threads. For instance, in each case the mystery at hand isn't "real," yet still has some impact on reality. Each also explores where the line is drawn between the virtual and real worlds, etc. In addition to this aspect, they're both very much character-oriented mystery series, so there are also similarities on a basic genre level. Although Dennou Coil is generally a better anime, fans looking for more could certainly give .hack a shot, and any .hack fans should definitely check out Dennou.

Merryberry Merryberry says...

Exploring the world of increasing interaction between real life and virtual reality, both .hack//sign and Dennou Coil demonstrate some pretty similiar and deep messages about how the relationship becoming blurred. Each series uses a real world and computer world and although the concept maybe similiar the loss of consciousness and hidden attributes of technology results in both series portraying the same ideas in different ways. Well worth watching.

Htieks Htieks says...

It's easy to see the similarities between these series: they deal with a virtual reality that can interfere with the real world and with people's minds, causing fatal accidents, and with people trying to uncover the secrets of these realities. Both also tend to resort to mature and somewhat philosophical dialogues now and then, and to accurately build up their respective settings along with some plot twists on the way.

Note that this also means that both series are quite slow-paced, but if you're interested in a very detailed world with its technology and urban legends, you won't be disappointed.

There are plenty of sci fi anime out there, but few show such a quiet, introspective look at the relationship between man and machine. Denno Coil and Eve no Jikan are acceptable for all ages (though Denno has a much younger feel), display gorgeous visuals, and overall will appeal to the same fans.

Even if slightly different these two series deal with technological elements melt with personal insight of characters. While Denno Coil is based on internet and with children as protagonists, in Time of Eve we have androids and high school people. Although these two shows are very different in substance, the style is what makes the connection.

Beautiful scenery features some fantastic CG blended in seemlessly and should be viewed in HD to be fully appreciated.

Both the world in Ghost Hound and that of Dennou Coil features one world overlaid over our own. A group of young kids find their way through, and the adventure begins. If you like a show that requires a little more thought and attention than the norm, I think you will enjoy both of these.

LeaT LeaT says...

Just like Denno Coil, Ghost Hound explores the boundaries between reality and fantasy and how the past affects the present. Driven to explore the mysterious, both shows tell compelling stories not only about that which does not exist, but also about the very nature of humanity itself.

It's the near future and internet technology has progressed to a level where it can be depicted as really artistic surreality - and mastery of the internet belongs to the young. Some of them have older relatives - though still young, on the cusp of adulthood - who have an even deeper connection with the emerging cyber-realities.

Even so, don't underestimate the grandmothers in either title! These anime are as much about the lulls and naturalistic depictions of family life as they are about cyberspace, with a mixture of excellent animation, wry humour and - in Denno Coil's case particularly - some great drama.

Ehecatl Ehecatl says...

Both Tamers and Denno Coil involve interactions with a digital world, and explore how interactions with digital entities push children into adult situations.  As a result, both series place a lot of focus on the characters, and both have a likeable and fleshed-out cast because of this.

Maverynthia Maverynthia says...

Both deal with an other "digital/cyber world" and how it's affecting the real world. Both are also full of past secrets that are now cropping up in the here and now. Both deal with things creeping in from the digital world that may or may not be harmful to the real world and both have organizations/kids that are fighting to eliminate the intruders as well as try to show people that they aren't so bad. Also both involve going into the digital world to fix the real one.

Claptrap Claptrap says...

Both involve children getting dragged into serious situations due to circumstances involving their time spent with technology/involving a cyber world. Tonally, they both have a sort of melancholy feeling at times, which is outside of how you'd expect the series to go initially. They both go into more serious territory than you'd initially think, with a character focused psychological bend and some child trauma.
