Reasons you might like Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion...

BelYaun BelYaun says...

If you liked the manipulation skills Lelouch had you will like the way Light acts to get what he wants. Both series have very strong main characters. The intelligence of the characters makes them seem godlike in the face of adversity but like Lelouch, Light also has his share of enemies.

madcastle madcastle says...

The main characters in Death Note and Code Geass are really smart and godlike. They know what they want and how to get it. The enemies they face are really tough and intelligent, which makes both stories really interesting.

johnnyd johnnyd says...

Both Death Note and Code Geass have a similar lead character and a great story. They are two intense series about the main character's rise and search for power, although under completely different circumstances.

AnimeUnrivaled AnimeUnrivaled says...

At first glance there seems to be little that ties Death Note, an intense psychological thriller, to Code Geass, a mecha anime with 1984/Big Brother themes. Upon further inspection, however, one sees similarly inspired protagonists with new power thrust upon them. Each quickly decides to use his newly found power to better the world. While Death Note is more intellectual and complicated, both anime take pleasure in spotlighting mindgames between secret opponents while questioning the main characters' ends-justify-the-means approach to ethics.

MrsickVisionz MrsickVisionz says...

Both shows feature a main character who uses his high intelligence to create intricate plans to accomplish his goals and defeat his rivals (who often are just as intelligent and have their own plans).  Both main characters straddle the line of good and evil for the sake of justice, and have no qualms or hesitations about sending people to their deaths in order to further their goals.  Code Geass has far more action but I'd say that Death Note has more violence and mean-spiritedness.

Bedwyr Bedwyr says...

What links Death Note and Code Geass are the main characters - Light and Lelouch. They are masterminds with extraordinary powers, which they're using to make their dream of a better world to come true. Although, CG is more of a fast-paced action series, compared to the detective nature of DN.

Sheex Sheex says...

Code Geass follows a similar path to Death Note with its focus on an ambiguous sense of justice.  There's also semblances of the logical framework, but they're not implimented nearly as well.  It has its own unique flavor but touches on many of the same topics.

mexigogen mexigogen says...

Death Note and Code Geass are both about dark anti-heroes who live by the saying: the ends will justify the means. Character-wise, they are strikingly close. They both have twisted friendships between really similar people who for one reason or an other end up as enemies.

Aganoth Aganoth says...

Code Geass and Death Note are both born of the same breed. Their main characters are super-geniuses who rely on strategy and deduction along with a special power (only one in either anime) in order to try and change the world.

Both toy with what's really right and what's wrong, where the lines of morality lie, and show just how quickly strength can crumble (many times over, in fact.)

venin venin says...

Code Geass and Death Note both are similar when it comes to the main characters. They believe in themselves above all else. They challenge the world that doesn't comply with their visions and their dreams, and both gain power in supernatural way that allows them to fight what they see as unjust. Both, as well, have tactical traits and skills which makes them leaders.

Grv Grv says...

Both Death Note and Code Geass follow the life of a boy genius in his quest to change the world. Truly suspenseful drama, brilliant plot twists and pure intelligence liken these 2 series.

HostClubOtaku HostClubOtaku says...

If you liked Code Geass I would highly recomend Death Note and vice versa. Both shows feature quite a bit more intellectual sparring than your typical shounen anime, and both main characters have very similar personalities (thery're closer to being the antagonist than the protagonist) and abilities (ridiculously powerful but with prominent weaknesses). Also the main concept of 'changing the world' is present in both of these anime. And if that's not enough for you they are both filled with action and a twisted plot that will keep you wondering what will happen next.

sayuri sayuri says...

The main parallel that can be drawn with Death Note and Code Geass is with the protagonists. Already having a clear ideal world in mind, and a matching strong desire to create that world, both male students are by chance given an inhuman power. Both taking on fake identities for the public, they use these powers to take control and carry out their plans in an intelligent, calculated way. I even get the same uneasy chill up my spine when either of them smile about things going their way.

Aenri Aenri says...

Code Geass and Death Note have similar main characters. Their world is split in two, and they have two faces - one which they show to the world and one for themselves. They want to accomplish some big goal. If you liked one, you will like the other.

dr4g00n dr4g00n says...

Death Note and Code Geass have a great and mysterious plot which is their key feature. Every time you get an answer for something, a few more new ones are born. This keeps you intensely wondering what will happen next, but can also be considered a drawback since I personally broke my chair when I saw Code Geass' last episode. If you like unforeseen events you will love these and hate these at the same time. If you think that's not possible just watch them!

Cornebus Cornebus says...

I found the main plot of Code Geass and Death Note to be really similar. The world isn't divided into bad and good people like most anime; it's really complex and difficult to understand because former friends may be enemies and the main characters become somewhat paranoid (and I even became paranoid at some points). The protagonists (or antagonists) are given a power that can change the face of the world completely. They have similar character attributes (they're both geniuses) and ways of thinking.

The stories really captivated me because of the good animation and character designs. Another good point is that there are not a lot of characters so the stories are easy to follow.

Likethat Likethat says...

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and Death Note are very alike yet are far from it at the same time. They are both about an extremely clever boy who receives a special gift (or power, so to say) which he tries to turn the world in to a better place with; though both of their methods can be questionable, their true intension is a better world for all.. Both Lelouch (Code Geass) and Light (Death Note) are slowly consumed by their own power and sacrifices must be made to make the world a better place. These are two very well thought through anime. If you like one I would definitely recommend the other.

Cetonis Cetonis says...

Code Geass and Death Note are both stories built around a mastermind sort of character who, when granted a special power, takes it upon himself to improve the world despite causing many deaths in the process. Both anime are centered around this moral dilemma of ends vs. means, as well as the descent of the central characters as they become increasingly drunk on their own power. Having aired at the same time, these two series are pretty much siblings - if you enjoyed one, by all means check out the other.

CuthienSilmeriel CuthienSilmeriel says...

Both revolve around a highly intelligent young male who happens to possess a unique and deadly power almost by pure chance. Both Lelouch and Light seek to change the world in which they live for the better and use their power and intelligence to do so, countering resistance to their extreme methods with battles of wit. Both anime hover around a gray area, rather than being clear cut as to who is right and who is wrong. It is left to the watcher to decide which side to support and both sides have valid arguments to justify their actions. These anime are good at making you think, though Code Geass has more action in it than Death Note.

SurrealWraith SurrealWraith says...

Death Note and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion are similar in many aspects. What drew me to them was the strategy implemented by the main characters in each. If you like anime in which the division between good and evil is not too clear, both of these are good choices.

SatoshiJiro SatoshiJiro says...

Both Death Note and Geass portray what it means to acquire power, and the ability to control it; the consequences brought about by wielding it as such, and the sacrifices which have to be made in order to achieve one's selfish desires.

While the stories are completely different, both will have you on the edge of your seat in suspense. Whether you're trying to peek around the corner to anticipate the next series of events, or simply enthralling yourself within the complex minds of the many unique characters, you will most definitely find something to enjoy about these anime titles.

Xennon Xennon says...

In Death Note and Code Geass, you are faced with their main characters wanting to end all wars and evil in order to create a peaceful existence for the good and pure. Both of these characters face tough challenges, enemies, and even close friends who oppose their visions of a perfect world and their means of how they achieve it.

aliencommander aliencommander says...

If you liked the intelligent thoughts in ether Death Note or Code Geass, or if you liked Light's or Lelouch's personality, you will love the other.

ShikiTohno ShikiTohno says...

They are both similar in many ways, such as the similarity between Lelouch and Light. The characters are trying to change their world using their sense of 'justice'; Light with the Death Note and Lelouch with the Geass, both with intelligence and cunning.

xiscoolerthanyou xiscoolerthanyou says...

If you like either of these series check out the other. Death Note and Code Geass go deeper than the average anime to make you think about your own values and ask you what you'd do in situations where both sides can be right. Both protagonists are also different from the average, as both are fighting against established society. The shows are both serious and more mature than your average anime.

YPaladin YPaladin says...

The main characters in Code Geass and Death Note are morally complex, with dazzling intellects that will leave you quite impressed. If you enjoy watching a morally gray protagonist on a quest to achieve a dream by any means necessary, you won't be disappointed.

Kuratsu Kuratsu says...

Like "smart" anime? Then you'd like both Code Geass and Death Note.

jholovacs jholovacs says...

Death Note and Geass have you questioning whether or not to root for the bad guy. The protagonist is doing something inherently wrong, for what seemed to be a good reason at the beginning before snowballing out of control. Death Note is more of a psychological suspense anime that sucks you in with significantly more inner monologues; there are no secrets about the protagonist's mindset. Lelouch is more of a drama that you can disassociate yourself from, where you can infer the qualities of his character by his actions and brief glimpses into a troubled past.

I think it's only fair to say I had a difficult time relating to either of the lead characters, but drama was kept high throughout both series. Be warned: both of these anime have significant amounts of gratuitous (and often senseless) violence.

Aksan Aksan says...

Both Code Geass and Death Note involve the use of cunning and strategy to achieve goals rather than brawn. However, to achieve these goals, the protagonists may have to lose some of their humanity in the process. The themes are similar, and people who enjoy one usually enjoy the other.

henki8 henki8 says...

Both series are quite alike, when it comes to the plot of a young man who wishes to change the wolrd in his view and gains a gift to do just that. They both have a clear goal and will do any thing, and kill anyone, even they own family to make they own wold with them as gods. They are very much alike, so if you loved one you will sure love the other as well.

saerenna saerenna says...

Both series have a main character who claims to be the bringer of justice, but their methods leave the viewer wondering whether their ideas are truly 'right' or not. Also, there is the supernatural element, where both main characters posess a kind of inhuman power that allows them to become the deciders of justice in the world.

Sevoth Sevoth says...

The two series have very similar stories: a genius is given a supernatural power and decides to use it to change the world for the better. However, their methods are of questionable morality, and both the cast and the fans are divided into "for" and "against".

remoneko remoneko says...

The main character in both series have the great minds that come up with the genuis strategies. They both have a "double-life" as a student or "the friend of justice". Raito and Lelouch both wants to bring "peace" and justice to the world. However, they both do so by using very violet means and may be not considered to be "justice" by some people.

Animati0n Animati0n says...

Both of the animes are quite alike, both of the main characters (lelouch and light) are trying to change something really huge that even an army couldn't handle.

Both of them are really intelligent and you'll see wonderful moves from both animes based on human psychology.

you really get suprised over how smart they really are, it's inhuman

for the more simply minded person I'll say this: do you like candy? If you do, these animes are your favorites

himurakenshin himurakenshin says...

A debatably good, debatably evil utilitarian main character who wants to create a new world coming into possession of a mysterious power and testing it to excess using it in tandem with their already extraordinary intelligence to exploit to it's fullest utility in realizing their goal? Yup, these shows are that similar. The primary difference is the serious, dark, sober (Monster-like) tone and color scheme of Death Note versus the shiny, exaggerated (Gundam Seed-like) mech fighting style of Geass. Also the primary character interactions in Death Note are rivalries and deceptions. Geass is more of the same, but with a few romances as well.

TheGiftedMonkey TheGiftedMonkey says...

Lelouch and Light both follow their own sense of justice. Both armed with a supernatural ability and unparallel intelligence, they set out to right the world. Anti-heros are becoming more and more popular and for good reason, they are badass!

cbb692 cbb692 says...

In Death Note, you have Light, who, through a supernatural being, obtains something, the Notebook, that helps him take over the world in a twisted way. He has someone, L, who is both close to him and is trying to kill his alternate identity, Kira. In Code Geass, you have Lelouch, who, through CC, obtains the Geass. He uses this so that he can kill his father. Suzaku has known Lelouch for a long time, but is trying to kill, Zero, Lelouch's "nickname". These two are virtually parallel in plot, character traits, ect.

Bdiah Bdiah says...

I find Code Geass and Death Note to be series of the same vein, perhaps made to compete with each other in late 2006, early 2007.

While Code Geass focuses more on action and mecha battles, and Death Note on criminal intrigue, both series are fundamentally about a mildly sinister protaginist matching wits with an antagonist of equal reasoning ability.

Izumi Izumi says...

You liked the thrill brought to you by Death Note? You are still dreaming it? Try this! New generation detective and action mixture that will make you forget even your beloved Death Note!

SniperX SniperX says...

I belive the reason why I love Death Note was the main character of Mastermind, that work on his plan in every detail and It alwasy work as he predict. Style of Code Geass is difrent, its other story, with Mechs and future wars but one thing remainds me Death Note, the felling when you watch as Zero's plan worked perfectly, its remainds me of feeling when Kira finaly explained his plan.

If you enjoyed that moments as I do, you will find Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion very similar in those experiances.

crzymn246 crzymn246 says...

There have been many parallels between the two anime, but both Death Note and Code Geass have seriously genius characters, though Light is more intelligent psychology-wise, whereas Lelouch is more of a master-strategist. Either way, their incredible exploits, which I will not mention due to spoilers, will leave you gaping and saying "holy crap that was incredibly brilliant!". At least it did for me.

Code Geass has a little bit more to offer comedy-wise, though Death Note has funnier eccentric character habits. Like L continuously eating sweets. Though, I must admit that the "epic writing" in Death note was simultaneously compelling and hilarious. I mean, they really know how to glorify writing people's names in a book.

Code Geass has some silly moments, but really, just like Death Note, is an awesome mind-f**k. Both are basically like being hit by a train-wreck from behind. Not only driven by LSD-inhibited monkeys, but completely unexpected. Things are going all dandy and fine, then WHAM! Roadkill. Body parts everywhere, the nearest hospital one hundred miles away.

Arehz Arehz says...

Light has a dark dream. He is a genius that was given a power to make that happen. Lelouch is similar to Light. They both have that genius that they make the most of. They both strive to conquer the world and make the most of their power.

thariinye thariinye says...

Code Geass has been described as 'Death Note with giant robots,' and the description does kind of fit the bill. Both of these series star 'villain' protagonists, brilliant youths whose genius combined with a usually distorted sense of morality gets an outlet for their frustrations about the world by a supernatural power with clearly delineated and internally consistent rules. But while Death Note becomes more of a mystery and detective thriller with an epic battle of wits, Code Geass chose a more geopolitical route that required teenagers on the battlefield; that meant giant robots. Code Geass takes the core of Death Note and adds real robot series tropes, and the tropes remarkably add to its awesomeness.

liljb15 liljb15 says...

There's a reason why this is such a common reccomendation. Even though the setting couldn't be more different, both storylines is about someone with an incredibly high IQ coming across a new power and using it to make their vision of a "better" world. Both of them also has an "Ends justifie the means" view because both characters commit acts that some would call evil throughout both series you'll find yourself wondering if its all actually worth it.

jurexplay jurexplay says...

Both anime are recently discovered gems. I mean it. They are kept in dark and gloomy atmosphere with almost none comedic relief. The main characters are very intelligent and they use their newly accuired powers to change the world. Plot in both series is insanely addicting and when you start watching you just can't stop. I'm sure that both of these anime will be held in few years as highly as NGE is held now.

charliechan charliechan says...

If you like like shows with a battle of brains, interresting people and good plots then thsese two are worth watching as both have everything above as well some action.

Temiko Temiko says...

Code Geass and Death Note both have a similarly styled main character: smart, determined, longing to create a better world, and then granted a power to do so. In the case of Lelouch - Geass, the power to give an absolute command to another person, in the case of Light - the death note, the power to kill a person who's real name and face you know.

Both animes will keep you in suspense as the main character puts their plans into play whilst avoiding capture, with plot twists throughout the series. Once you starting watching these, you won't want to stop until you finish them.

mashmash20 mashmash20 says...

In both seiries, the main characters are anti-heors who are trying to overthrough society and change the world into their idea of "better". Each one uses mysterious powers theyve obtained and show incredible stargetic planning to manipulate everyone they need to.

threemediumlights threemediumlights says...

Both anime series deal with the theme of justice. The main protagonist, Yagami Light of Death Note believes that ridding the world of criminals by killing them is justice while Lelouch Lamperouge of Code Geass believes that justice is destroying the evil Holy Empire of Britannia even if he has to get his hands dirty. Are these characters doing the right thing? Is killing justified with justice?

SzC SzC says...

Both Light and Lelouch are sharing the desire to repair the rotten world. Abnormal power given to them by an mysterious individual (Ryuk / C.C.) is allowing them to fulfill it.

veqtor veqtor says...

Both series are about intelligent revolutionaries who want to change the world into a better place and both protagonists employ means of doing so which could be questioned.

Both series are also filled drama and suspense, betrayal and super-powers, handed to the protagonists.

UltimaParadox UltimaParadox says...

I think that Code Geass is very simliar to Death Note. While a lot of people might throw Code Geass to the side as another mecha anime it has a lot of the simliar qualities that made Death Note such a hit. Both main characters come across a unique power that drives them to rule the world. Also, they both share the idea that good strategy pays off in the end. Death Note and Code Geass are both more about playing mind games rather than straight action, which makes them so enjoyable to watch

kianbung kianbung says...

Both series have the same concept - a youth with a vision of their 'perfect world' stumbles upon a supernatural power and embarks on their quest to realise their 'perfect world'. In the process towards the realisation of their vision, they face many moral dilemmas which force us to question - 'is it really worth it?'.

Death Note is set in a more contemporary era, while Code Geass is set in a fictional near future - and Geass definitely has much more action sequences than Death Note. Even so, the main highlight of the series would be the ways the main character in both series manipulate and sway people to realise his goals.

Watch one and liked it? You definitely have to watch the other.

Migandas Migandas says...

Lelouch Lamperouge and Yagami Light share some characteristics. They both want too change the world at all cost. Not a single death is too much for them. Although there are no Mecha's in Death Note, and no Shinigami's in Code Geass, I am sure that if you liked the one, you will like the other, so jump into the lives of these Anti-Heroes, and see what they will do for their goals!

Liivatesukka Liivatesukka says...

Well, basically the same plot and characters. The art is a lot more cartoonish, but still quite nice. It's not as good as DN, but if you liked DN, you'll probably like this too ^-^

Both series feature characters who aquire bizzare powers (Lite the Death Note and Lelouche the Geass) and take it upon themselves to use those powers to make the world a better place but are subject to heavy oposition. Both Lite and Lelouche are incredibly smart and must act carefully, fulfilling their objectives while also avoiding being caught. Both series feature engaging plotlines as Lite struggles to remain one step agead to become the god of a bright and ideal world, Lelouche struggles to increase his influence and power to that which he can destroy Britannia. If you enjoyed one, your sure to enjoy the other.

SanjiWatsuki SanjiWatsuki says...

Essentially, Code Geass felt like Death Note-lite in the beginning. Both involve very intelligent, crafty protagnoists.

Adam Adam says...

The similarities are ridiculous. Genius kids using their new god-like powers in order to change the world. The Mecha in Code Geass severely contrasts with Death Note's complete lack of action, but the only reason not to watch Code Geass is if you hate DN or Mecha.

Death Note is more thought provoking and entertaining, Code Greass is definitely something DN fans should pick up. If you enjoyed Code Geass but haven't seen Death Note, watch it NOW!

userdan userdan says...

I think it's quite clear why one should like this anime if he likes the other.

They share many a similarity, maily introduced through the struggeling of the main characters.

Both working towards a goal they see as just, ut at times appear anti-heroic, both have at least four special trait only a selected few have: Intelligence, Determination, Charisma, and last, but not least, a power given to them, almost by chance.

Both animes deal with the corruptedness of the modern world, even through Code Geass doesn't state it openly.

I believe that's more than enough reason to associate these two series.

apursansar apursansar says...

Death Note and Code Geass focuss on a young genius who gets equipped with supernatural powers which normal humans are incapable to comprehend. Yagami Raitu and Lelouch Lamperouge both decide to chance the world according to their personal sense of justice, but they have to face an equally powerfull adversary who represents the disputable establishment. While Yagamis egoism only allows him fight using others as marionettes, Lelouch soon forms a revolutionary group based on confidence and mutual dependence. Either series contains scenes of great tension, psychological insight and twists, but their most considerable accomplishment may be the demonstration of ambivalance between good and evil.

freakzilla freakzilla says...

Code Geass and Death Note go hand in hand. Both are righfully hyped up, which is a great thing as it makes a lot of fans discover an entirely new genre!

If you like one it's unavoidable to not like the other one. Both have the tactical mind games and a similar plot: a supernatural power falling into the lap of a high school student that wants to make the world better for everyone but losing his own purity while purifying the world.

While both work it out differently, since they are so similar it might be best to not watch these two anime back-to-back. But even despite those similarities i definitely recommend seeing both!

Licious Licious says...

I absolutely recommend Death Note if you liked watching Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion and vice versa. Two great things about these two shows are. One is they have similar characters. Both have an anti-hero protagonist who wants to reform the word, and the antagonist who stands for justice. What is great about this is that you will be arguing with yourself and everyone else around which side to root for. The second is that the shows' stories and setting are different; and variety is important. Although the sheer amount of recommendations should convince you to watch. If you yet to be convinced please give one a try if you liked the other.

If your the type of person who enjoys watching an anime from the other side both Code Geass and Death Note happily fill that. Both are exceptionally well made and follow the anti-hero, Light in Death Note and Zero in Code Geass, each having their own agendas to change the way of the world through somewhat questionable methods. Both are brilliant mind games and works with outsmarting the enemy. Well worth watching the other if you liked one.

Both series have SHOCKINGLY similar main characters. Each of them are smart with a very good ability to plan ahaid, yet with a dark side as well. Each series also has similar dark undertones. It's hard to think of any other anime with the level of intensity that these two thrillers bring to the table.

I realized the similarities between the two series almost at once. Both series follow extremely intelligent (as well as handsome) young men who are given a special power to carry out their visions for the world they live in. Light (DN) and Lelouch (CG) share many personality traits as well. If you're crazy about Death Note, you'd love Code Geass!

Injurak Injurak says...

They share the same sort of story on many levels, Lelouch and Light share the same sort of profile. Both are extremely intelligent, both aim to remake the world into a different, better place and both are hunted by the law.

The main difference is that Code Geass is has more action.

Both anime's have a very bright main caracter, Lelouch and Light think things through before they make an act. Both focusses on the story, and therefore the storyline is very good. First thing what i thought after wathing some Code Geass, was how much Lelouch was like Light ^^

Both series are about someone trying to stand for true justice, and to make the world into a better place, to make it into the world that they believe that it should be. Both Light and Lelouch are forced to realize these consequences as the story progresses, often to their own regret.

Both of these Anime have a huge sense of intelligence to the storyline that is unrivaled in my oppinion by any other anime

Both boast highly intelectual character, as well as good vs evil in a stereotypical cat and mouse gam, as well as extreme suspense at the end of every episode making you more and more intreagued into the story and what will happen next.

Extreme excitement all the way to the end, and like any amazing anime has you begging for more when its all over.

I have to say that if you liked one of these anime's you will probably really like the other. Both of the animes have a ton of plot twists and continuous "1 upping" of the protagonist and antagonist. The characters Kira and Lelouch are very similar in the fact that they are brilliant characters and really know how to play their cards. Both of these animes also have heavy plot points on "saving the world" but in the not so traditional sense of that saying. Also, if you like to think, both of these will keep you on the edge of your seat as you try to figure out how they are going to get themselves out of the bind that they just got into

Najaraja Najaraja says...

Both Lelouch Lamperouge and Light Yagami are young men who may have the best intentions at heart at the beginning of their journey, however their methods are often cruel and cold making them both anti-heros, and in some cases villains.

Both Code Geass and Death Note have the characters engaging in intriguing battles of wit where it becomes a game of intellect rather than who has the most muscle.

Aryon984 Aryon984 says...

Code Geass, at first glance is not "similar" to Death Note, but as you start watching them, you beign to see a resemblance.

Both story lines involve a character that lives an ordinary life, and one day has a life changing power thrust upon them. And as such, they attempt to use that power to better the world in a way they seem fit.

However, their methods may seem unorthodox, and as such are seen as antagonists in the show.

Also, the "mind games"within each show share similar aspects. Death Note, having the main character duke it out with one or more supposed protagonists in a game of intelligence, gives a feeling it's more about subterfuge of the mind. Whilst Code Geass, the main character is more up against the whole nation of the opposing country, mainly the varying nobles that appear throughout the series.

As conclusion, If you haven't watched either of these two shows, or have only watched one, then it is greatly recommended you watch the other

seraphim2000 seraphim2000 says...

Psychological aspects and mind-twisting moments are abundant in these anime, as two teens use their newly given powers to change the world and make it into what each one thinks of as better. The plot and struggles of the character hiding this power are fundamentally the same, giving both a very similar feel that can mess with your mind.

wizj619 wizj619 says...

The similiarities between these two animes are endless. Much like Light, Lelouch is given a very special power which he is determined to use to change the world. Though it does lack the dark atmosphere of Death Note, Lelouch is forced to use many clever traps and deceptions to keep his identity hidden as he uses his power to take over an Empire.

Ryokashi Ryokashi says...

Both series are about an ambitious character who somehow is granted the power to carry out their ambitions, leaving behind their past lives and moving towards what they consider a "greater good".

Cfos Cfos says...

Both anime are about a male main-character who tries to change the world by himself. The're both pretty smart and've got some sharp and powerful enemies, who try to stop their actions. The often strategic battles are the main point why this series are pretty exciting and you'll look forward to the next episode for sure.

Lelouch90 Lelouch90 says...

Both series are about longing for ruling the world and each side will do everything to their dream come true. Main charcters have similar personality and they are great at strategies. Also they both have god complex.

Barnacules Barnacules says...

Both protagonists are Byronic heroes who use morally ambiguous methods to change the world. Death Note focuses more on intellectual and psychological warfare while Code Geass is about actual war and politics. If you liked one, you're bound to like the other. Also, both anime are extremely awesome.

KoRnish KoRnish says...

Both series are about young, ambitious and very intelligent students, who get powers that allow them to take an attempt at changing the world. Also, both contains many plot twists and interesting storyline.

Even though Code Geass is more action oriented and have some sci-fi and comedy elements, if you liked one of those series, you'll probably also love the second one.

Johnnyflickan Johnnyflickan says...

Both the animes are about a smart, bored guy who get a power to change the world to a better place. They are both pretty dark and gives two sides of the coin, where nothing is really right or wrong.

Xephelion Xephelion says...

Both Code Geass and Death Note revolve around a central character who recieves an unearthly power. In both series, Lelouch and Light attempt to change the world for the better using this power and both stories deal with the morals and consequences of their actions.

Heros in both anime try to change world. They have special powers and are using them to manipulate and use people. Both try to think enemies moves before and be one step ahead of them. characters stay hidden, they even change names ... Kyra and Zero, Nobody knows who they are except few people.

Both of these awesome series are about a teenage boy who thinks he can change the world. With the help with some of their friends or fans they kill to create a new world. Both have a sense of justice and they both go through challenges to make their dreams come true. Talk about kill to protect.

Tomdiepstrap Tomdiepstrap says...

Although Death Note and Code Geass are not based in the same kind of world, the plotlines are surprisingly similar. Both main characters are given a godly gift that gives them the power to control people to their advantage. They also use their power to try to change the world and make it a better place. The main characters are also similar in personality. Both main characters are bored with the world they live in, and when they receive their gifts they are quick to use them. They are also very intelligent and very good strategists. If you liked one, I can guarantee you will like the other.

Adonia Adonia says...

Too arrogant, too young, too smart... and with a power to revolutionize their world. What happens if you receive the power to control others... but that power is still limited?  Both Death Note and Geass have such protagonists... filled with ideals and powers but at the same time rendered powerless by limitations.  Feom beginning to end, both stories are a power struggle.

Sarge128 Sarge128 says...

Both of these animes involve the main characters making extensive of their intelligence. In both a battle of wits ensues between the 2 main enemies. So if you like animes involve a lot of mental thinking and strategies, then either one of these is right for you.

KiraRin KiraRin says...

Two very similar and yet very different shows that I think complement each other perfectly for the kind of viewer that loves something a little more mentally challenging.

Both shows look at the consequence of one of the "youth of today" getting almost godlike powers, that they use to shape the world into an ideal. Not all of the choices are nice, or ideal, but are more realistic than the perfect happy ending plaguing a lot of shows at the moment.

sabutaatti sabutaatti says...

The world is against them, something must be done. They seek justice by their own way and will get it - anyhow what it will cost.

They got genius minds and when they get little utility to help them, they are unstoppable. Of course there is people who don't like their actions....

Maincharacters resembles eachother: two school students who are masterminds, will get same kinded godlikepowers to kill and enslave people for their same kinded goal: to do the world better place of living.

fullmetalstrawberry fullmetalstrawberry says...

Both revolve around a brilliant boy with a special ability that he uses to change the world - both Light and Lelouch are malicious and will keep you entertained for hours.

ChaChan ChaChan says...

if you liked death note, you might like Code geass too because the main character in both the series is standing ''alone'' in a fight agains the world. in code geass its the 3th world war but in death note its kira almost starting the 3th world war. both main character comes in contact whit supernatural things; Lelouch comes in contact whit C.C. who gives him the geass and in death note light comes in contact with Ryuk. a death good.

Darv Darv says...

Both animes are based around a protoganist who gets a superhuman ability and uses that to fight their own personal battles with the world, thinking of themselves as superior.

Both also involve the intense use of (psychological) strategic thinking and both series use that as a main focus instead of the resulting action. You won't find pointless action scenes in either shows.

norco norco says...

The main character of each of these shows is amazingly similar. So if you liked Light you would also like Lelouch and vise versa.  Also there are not very many titles with the anti-hero genre, so these two fit perfectly together.

Kari5 Kari5 says...

The main characters of these shows are self proclaimed rulers or gods. They are both brilliant students who see the need for a huge change in the world, and secretly act upon this wish. Using charisma, intelligence, and wit they make clever plans and use people for their cause. Light and Lelouch are extremely similar!

Allelujah Allelujah says...

Both shows dealt with the anti-hero thing, and no one in either show is truely evil. The main characters are considered villains to some and saviors to others. Both Lelouch and Light are ruled by their emotions (as anti-heroes usually are), and are extremely intelligent in their own way. They both also seem to have no real interest in women.

same general idea of a genius trying to change the world and make it better, a similar story with the same goals, but different roads to reach them, if you will.

These two go very well together, while death note could be considered more "mature" than code geass they are both incredu=ibly similar, though the main character of death note being a little more inhinged than Lelouch.

In both stories the characters are trying to reform the world with their own hands and eventually gain recognition from the world.  Their actions also impacted the planet in many ways.

Both anime talks about school students under disguise and they want to take over the world (mostly). Both anime have "gods" witch going everywhere where that studend goes. Both anime are smart, with a little humor in it.

Both series are about an anti hero that gains a power that he uses for a good purpose that does not end well.

Both series seems to mysteriously make you root for the bad guy though...interesting.

JonnyAkster JonnyAkster says...

Both main characters want to change the world by any means neccesary, in Death Note this happens by writing bad peopels names into a notebook, and then they die. For Code Geass, the main character can manipulate peopel to do whatever he wants if they lookinto his eye, and wants to use it to make a better world.

LLORAtheLLAMA LLORAtheLLAMA says...

As I was watching Death Note I thought "Oh my goodness! This totally makes me think of Code Geass!"

Both main guys are very alike in the fact that they are so smart that they can do anything they set their mind to (and I do mean anything). They can also be called crazy for the things they do.

Both series also have that dark element to them but Death Note definitely has more of that.

ukato ukato says...

Both of these shows are thought-provoking, "manipulative murder-mysteries" (in the wide sense of the word, since in Death Note they are just individual deaths whereas Code Geass are more about just manipulating people en mass and killing them for convience), where the main protagonist is an anti-hero, "gifted" (or should i say, cursed) with a beyond human power, with which he attempts to make the world a better place.

Unfortunately, the closer they strive towards the light, the further they step into the darkness... resulting in wonderfully intriguing storys which have left their mark on anime-history.

If you want one word to describe these shows, it can only be EPIC!

Jack14456 Jack14456 says...

Death Note and Code Geass both follow a similar principle: High school student gets a strange power, in one case the Death Note and the other Geass, and try to change the world with it. Both weilders of the power have amazing thinking capabilities and are the most brilliant strategists of their world, knowing both themselves and everyone around them far too well because of their personal behavior.

Both anime shows have an interesting, intelligent and troubled main character, who desperately tries to accomplish his goals. Lelouch (Code Geass) and Yagami Light (Death Note) encounters many different worthy enemies. Also, both anime series have a lot of twists and turns, which makes the show very interesting and unexpected.

canonrocker canonrocker says...

Code Geass and Death Note have many same facts. One is breaking the rules of God and the main characters aim to become God themselves. The two anime are also like a DEATH game. You lose you die but when you win you will rule. Watching every single minute of the two cause they are hard to understand if you miss one moment in the two series. enjoy ^^

Bees Bees says...

If you like Code Geass, you will probably like Deat Note as well, 'cos they both have same sort of main charachter, who manipulates people arounf him with some sort of special power.

SherlockDotNet SherlockDotNet says...

Both Code Geass and Death Note present two factions and their leaders fight for their own definition of the "greater good". In both, there is a single, extraordinary and hidden power that shifts the balance. There's no typical "evil side", as both have their reason for fighting. The relationship between the opposants makes the battle personal.

Fighting for different definitions of the "greater good" is what defines both of these series, both excellent. Code Geass is more oriented toward action, as Death Note concentrates more on the strategies, but in both case both strategy and secrecy are proeminent. Both recommended.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

What would happen if a high-schooler with strong ideals was to recieve a power that could change the world? Both shows follow an incredibly smart main character with such power in their quest to reach their ideals, and they won't let anything get in their way to do so. These two shows can best be described as "battle of wits" anime, where the main character is constantly playing mind games with his enemies and often comes up with brilliant stragegies.

These shows are, at their core, two of the same kind, only in a different cover.

TheOmnipotentLemur TheOmnipotentLemur says...

Adding another rec to this pile seems a little redundant, but these two series really do match ridiculously well. Both include a well intentioned extremist who comes across a super power and decides to use it to change the world.

Each of the chacter's acts impacts the world in more ways then one. (and not for the better I might add.). If you liked one then you may like Death the other as well.

Both Light from Death Note and Lelouch from Code Geass have great intellect with two great ways of taking over the world. Both fast paced and suspenseful with a handful of jaw dropping twists.

I don't think there's a better rec for Death Note or Geass than the other - both star brilliant anti-heroes who engage in psychological warfare with the rest of the world, for the sake of rebuilding it to be 'better'.

YouAreOuttaMy5 YouAreOuttaMy5 says...

The main reason why Code Geass and Death Note are compared so often is Light's uncanny resemblance to Geass's Lelouch. Both gain an ability by accident(or by fate if you want to call it that) that can change the world. Both are very intelligent, witted, manipulative, and have a twisted sense of justice that they attempt to justify. The main difference is that Code Geass has mechs and is a bit more colorful while in Death Note, Light is a bit more clever and emotional.(The cleverness factor is up for debate, as many people will argue that Lelouch is more clever than Light) Another important key difference is that while Light is a more overall emotional character, he has almost no emotional attachment whatsoever to any other human.(His father was minimal and ultimately just a pawn in his game) Lelouch, is just as manipulative as Light, but does show a bit more of a charasmatic nature and his unconditional love towards his sister in the beginning of the show illustrates that perfectly.

Another bonus of Code Geass is that it's ending and second season is MUCH better and well done then Death Note's.

Overall, If you like Death Note, then you are almost SURE to enjoy Code Geass. Geass has a bit more humor and action, may not be AS psychological, but it's pretty damn close.

Both animes feature a main character who is willing to do evil deeds in order to bring about change within the world.  While in Death Note Light at times takes on a more insane personality, Lelouch for the most part stays somewhat sane though with an uncanny ability to switch between personalities very quickly.  Both animes feature characters who aren't the everyday hero who may have some intelligence but are rely on somekind of physical strength Light and Lelouch rely more on their brains than anything else.

Reiner Reiner says...

These two animes are similiar in the thing i love the most. Young inteligent guy will obtain some kind of power, and he balance at "good vs evil" border, that you dont know which side you want to win. Both these animes throw you into confusion like "Who is good and who is evil ?".

StardustAngel StardustAngel says...

These 2 series are a lot alike. Lelouch and Light both find an amazing power, have kinda the same goal, they are both geniuses. The main difference is that while Death Note refers to the current world, Code Geass takes place in the future. In my opinion, Code Geass is just as amazing as Death Note! P.S. I recommend watching Death Note, and then Code Geass, though it doesn't really matter...

Both Code Geass and Death note feature main characters who are genius masterminds. In both series, the events focus how the main characters use their intelligence to manipulate the storyline and others involved.

Both of the main characters originally intend to use their powers to make the world a better place in their own way; however, neither characters' plan goes the way they expected. In both series there are elements of tragedy that arise from the use of the powers, and both characters' power ultimately leads to their own downfall. Both characters also act in secret and hide their identities throughout the series.

The core elements of Code Geass and Death Note are extremely similar; if you liked one series you are almost sure to like the other.

Code Geass and Death Note are the only two animes that I didnt want to watch, but instead, I HAD to watch them.

DN and CG both had only limited runs, they knew the story line and cut themselves off without dragging the story on too far. Both take a serious look at what a person might do when presented with extraordinary power.

I love both of these series because they naturally insert the typical Japanese anime humour, but dont allow it to control/ruin the entire show. The serious elements of the show make them fantastic.

Death Note and Code Geass are almost a twins. Both characters, Lelouch and Raito are very intelligent people who got a chance to change the world.

They rule, cheat, trick and manipulate a lot of people, even closest family to aquire their goal. They're ready to spare people lifes either. They both loose control of everything and fall down.

However, action in Code Geass happens in whole world, it have nice battles and more 'emotional'.

Both series focus on teenage boys with extraordinary intelect and a new found power that gives them the opportunity to accomplish their goals. But while Light loses sight of his goal to make the world a better place and becomes obsessed with his own godlike persona(similar to the way Adam and Eve were changed by the temptation of power ) , Lelouch keeps his promise to give the world a new start by sacrificing not only himself but his image as well(similar to Jesus .. but much braver) so you can say both series have Biblical themes . All in all if you liked Death Note i think you will love Code Geass (even if you hate mecha like me )

BlueStainedRoses BlueStainedRoses says...

They both resolve around a battle of wits, instead of a battle of pure strength. Also Lelouch and Light can be compared to eachother, so could L and Suzaku i guess, but not as much as light and lelouch. The animation style on these two are both really awesome.

When watching Death Note for the first time I constantly related it back to Code Geass. The main characters are both driven by the desire to create a new world.A world where there is peace. Although Lelouch keeps changing his reason for fighting his overall objective remains the same while Light will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Both characters are highly intelligent and possess a genius level intellect. They both face strategic and physiological obstacles. If you watch Death Note and Code Geass they will both give you seriously amazing plot lines and a epic story to match. Plus a few twists along the way. Death Note and Code Geass show the life of a young man, who was given some kind of “power” (Lelouches Geass and Lights Notebook). They both start to use the power while the original owner has an eye on them. They attempt to bring justice and peace to the world.

Light and Lelouche share many characteristics. For example, both are pretty good at “manipulate” people into doing exactly what they want. Both are very good strategists. Both anime are kinda dark, but still realistic. They demonstrate how people can change by gaining a power that let them be/play “god” and judge others. While watching both, you’ll may wonder if you should actually like the MC or hate him.

As Yagami Light wants to destroy all the evil in the world, Lelouch wants the same. They both wants to make a new world and be the God of that world.

There's more things in common between these animes, but I won't write them because I don't want to spoil you.

In each of these anime, we follow the disastrous story of a young "anti-hero" who randomly acquires one day, for no apparent reason, a powerful ability who comes disturbing the course of his life. Then, assisted by the character who "unintentionally" gave them their powers (Ryuk in Death Note and C.C. in Code Geass.), they use their newly acquired ability, in addition to their already "higher than average" intelligence and logical mind to defy the authority in order to turn the world they live into something better. (At least, from their own perspective.)

It was clear to me somehow almost right away, after just a few epizodes... These two series have something very much in common. While Code Geass is more action based than Death Note, both stories have an almost too similar story line with strategy geniuses for main characters. Code Geass and Death Note have incredibly similar concepts: a rather privledged and disillusioned individual, who believes that there's something wrong with the world, obtains a supernatural power from a more neutral supernatural entity and using a pseudonym, goes about enacting his plan to change the world.

They both have a great deal of action (Although Code Geass' action is much more direct than Death Note's), a maniacal protagonist, and an incredibly colorful cast that manages to cover a good deal of character types.

Osiummaster Osiummaster says...

Code Geass and Death note are quite similar in the Intelligence level of the main character, though the difference is probably that Lelouch from Code Geass deals a lot with emotion, while Light is always sure of what to do. Also Death Note's happenings happen way faster than those of code geass.

Both animes are very alike, even though death note is better in my opinion, Code geass is definately worth watching

Halcyon Halcyon says...

Even though the setting in the series is not similar, there's just something about the main characters in both Death Note and Code Geass that is strikingly similar: They're highly intelligent, cunning, and posession of great power, which they intend to use for their own purpose, be it good or evil. And most of all, they're sodarn likable!

Chances are, if you loved one of these, you're going to love the other.

AttackDefence AttackDefence says...

Light Yagami and Lelouch Lamperouge are kinda "separate at birth" characters. The difference - and it's not a little one - is that while Light fails to rescue himself, Lelouch in the end redeems himself. Twist-plot at their best in DN, a little bit confusing sometimes in CG. Psychologically speaking DN is superior to CG, but it lacks in action. If you are someone who likes god-like characters than both can please you very well...

Rfsancho Rfsancho says...

Both of these shows are extremele similar. The main characters are both just sadictically manipulative, and they both create some very intricate plans during their attempt of rising to power. They are very fun to watch and I am sure you would enjoy them both.

Both Light and Lelouch share so many similarities it is unbelievable. Each is given a supernatural power (Light can kill any person if he knows their name and face by using a notebook; Lelouch can can mind control any person by direct eye contact) and each is highly intellectual. Both animes hold an extremely intense plot that makes full usage of every episode with no fillers. Both animes also have a high emphasis on morality and choice, especially as you watch both main characters be forced to make morally questionable decisions for the "greater good".

anosora anosora says...

Between Lelouch and Death Note, you'll notice the similarity between their darkness, both are antiprotagonists. Evil main characters.

In Code Geass and Death Note. Both of the Main Characters come across a power they can use to change the world. Light Yagami Finds the Death note which is a Book Of death, You write their name down they die. Lelouch finds a girl who has a power called Geass which is a power to Command someone and they have to do it. They Both use this power to change the world. They both have Characters vs eachother for what they believe in. Light vs L (or Kira vs L), and Lelouch vs Tsuzaku ( Zero vs Britania).  Im sure you WILL most Definetely Like code geass if you like Death note. Just because Code geass doesnt have that thriller, and it does have a bit of romance in it doesnt mean Its not good :) so please watch both.

from the laugh itself, lelouch and light share the same creepy laugh. The story and the intention of both the protagonist are also similar. One is to get rid of crimes in an extreme way/power, one is to get rid of Britannia by also using power.

Atalea Atalea says...

Both animes involve a very intelligent man who obtains the power that can be used to change the world. They want to create a new world in which everyone will live peacefully, but others think the way they want to fulfill this is wrong and so a battle begins. Along the way you don't know what is good and evil anymore. The power consumes them and they slowly become mad. If you're into mindgames I can really recommend both of them. If you liked one of them, you'll definitely like the other as well.

G4tsu G4tsu says...

Both Lelouch and Light (Death note's main character) are super smart and are given some little power. They impose their view of the world no matter what with brio, bringing that little power to the max, climbing to the top but anonymously, only under the trait of a character. The way, they outpass the government in place is jubilatory.

I you liked one or these character you have to watch the other anime.

Both of these animes are in my top 5 animes for similar reasons. If you were to put into a specific filter "anti-hero", these 2 animes along with the second season of code geass which is better than the first. Both have amazing storylines and you can decide who the protagonist is and who the antagonist is. Don't think Code Geass is just another Gundam cause you'll have another thing coming to you.

Lelouch's character rivals that of Yagami Light. Very well plotted and garenteed to emotionally connect with the viewer. Serious god-complex and will not stop until the world is changed.

If you liked Death Note or Code Geass, you'd like the other because both have an anti-hero that tries to make their world a better place with some kind of superpower. The anti-hero in each anime tries to rid the world of evil in order to be God of a new, perfect world. Both Light and Lelouch are given the power to do just this, and there are people trying to stop  Light and Lelouch from achieving their goal. However, this is where they differ. Lelouch is an anti-hero, but he cares for his friends and beloved sister up until the end. Light does in the beginning, but becomes truly insane and kills anyone, not just criminals.

Arbiter Arbiter says...

Both of these are absolutely amazing and deserve your attention. I was blown away by the story, the depth of characters, and pretty much everything. Even though the setting is completely differnet, both Protagonists share the same traits. A must watch.

FlyingWaffle FlyingWaffle says...

Both Code Geass and Death Note share key compenents that make them extremely interesting. They are based more on the intellect battles between powers, instead of the actual physical power. They both have people who intend to change the entire world, with their smarts alone. They are both about geniouses who pull strings from the shadows to change everything, while having different endings, they both are trying to change the world for the better.

callan callan says...

They both employ Genius tactics that come to play only when you see no hope, and both share the supernatural trait of controlling ones actions, albeit to differen't extremes.

This is one of the best animes out there. Light and LeLouch are all the same. I wonder what would happen if they met each other? Anyways, Light and LeLouch both are secret killers who obtain a power that only select others have. They use it in a way to bring justice. But the story line is totally different, though the general concept is the same.

milky228 milky228 says...

Both have a protagonist who's trying to change the world with a newly obtained power. The main characters each have to hide there identity as there are people close to them working against him.

mythrainbow mythrainbow says...

Both are very good thrillers, although Code geass is more balanced between the psychological, action, drama and comedy, while Death note focuses more on the psychological content. In fact I would reccommend watching Death note first, the pace and action that happens in Code may cause Death Note to seem a little slow in comparison. Both contain the dark/anti-hero protagonist. If you like stragetic-genius type protagonists bent on changing the world, and willing to do so by any method, then try these out.

Nidrax Nidrax says...

The main character's morals are pretty similar and both gain an incredible type of power that leads them into control.

MFM MFM says...

The main characters (Light and Lelouch) are extremely inteligent and plan every move so that in the end they can achieve their goal. They both have a good purpose for going through this psychological fight and have enemies which are trying to avoid their success. Both plots make you want to know what's gonna happen next as the mystery and suspense is very intense. These anime are like puzzles that make you want to put all the pieces together. If you liked one than you have to try the other.

Both of these anime involve a charatcer who is second to no one in the strategy realm. In Death Note the main character uses a notebook to accomplish his agenda. In Code Geass the main character uses a rebel army to work towards his agenda. In the end both the main character's efforts result in something other than what they were expecting to happen. Death Note ends kind of awkwardly while code geass ends solidly.

Death Note was my favorite anime of all time, and still is. However after finishing Death Note I looked for something similiar to it and found Code Geass. I didn't have high expectations at first, but as soon as I watched the 1st episode I knew it was going to be amazing. And it was. I can say that if you like one you WILL like the other

These two animes are so similar it is ridiculous. Both the protagonists are given a power by a god-like figure and use it to change the world. Both main characters are very smart, and tackle the challenges they face in a very similar way. So many people have recommended these two already but I have no choice but to agree with them.  The main characters have similar views on how the world should be and they have powers to change it to their liking. The stories are a bit similar too, but not too much. Talking about the atmosphere ... Death Note is definitely darker than Code Geass, Code Geass has it's rare moments of humor and it's nothing unsuitable. At least not in my opinion.  I think these two are definitely worth the watch.

SheiCat SheiCat says...

It seems like there are few similarities between these two series, but both delve into the psychological aspects of obtaining a great power. Lelouch has his Geass, which allows him to control others, and Light has a Death Note, which allows him to kill anyone as he long he knows the name and face of the person. Code Geass goes more in depth with the political aspect. Both series have incredibly intelligent and attractive male leads. A major difference in Light and Lelouch is that Light is very athletic while Lelouch is not. Both series have an amazing plot that will have you on the edge of your chair. If you enjoyed one, I defintely reccomend watching the other!

The main reason i like both shows is the main character.

If you like Stubbornly intelligent and intelligently stubborn, fighthing in his own way, highly narcissistic and selfish, thinking big, devilishly clever characters

This reccomendation also goes if you enjoyed the character of Lelouch and are looking for an anime with a similiar character. In which case i would highly recommend Death Note.

In both of these series the main character gets a supernatural power which they start to use to mold the world to their liking. Plenty of devious plotting ensues and even a single mistake can be fatal. Everyone around the main characters is a mere chess piece to be used to reach goals.

Death Note and Code Geass are very easily the two best animes I've ever seen. Light and Lelouch are similar characters, although Light's mind goes a bit sooner than Lelouch. They both are trying to change the world they live and and are the perfect anti-heroes. They gain a sort of super power that allows them to start  a rebellion or sorts. Death Note is a mystery, a game of cat and mouse in secret. Code Geass is much more out in the open but just as psychological. I highly recommend you watch both of them.

For people who watched either of the 2 animes the other is the perfect and logical continuation. These 2 are my favorite 2 animes mostly because they have a great lead character. The biggest difference: With DN, the first part of the series is the better part, while the ending, well lets just say it could have been better. With Code Geass: fantastic start, a little repetitive in the middle, and the best ending i have ever seen in an anime series.

Its one of those anime in which you will be taken, step by step, through one character's great plan only to find out they are falling for their antagonist's plan the entire time! One big difference is that Code Geass contains great mech action where Death Note contains no action at all. I'd highly recommend both.

Death Note and Code Geass are so incredibly simiar, yet completely and utterly different.

Both focus on an intelligent school boy who is given power beyond what he could be expected to be capable of handling out of the blue. Both are incredibly idealistic and wish to use their power for the greater good. Both have times where they're heroes and both have times where they seem pure evil.

Code Geass and Death Note have very different settings and, as the stories go on, very different plots. However, the feel, which is generally very serious and dark, and the ideas put forward are very similar in both shows.

Code Geass focuses on an alternate future where the British Empire is in control of a large portion of the world still and is based in Japan, where the natives have been oppressed. Death Note is set in (roughly) modern times in a very realistic, grounded world with a dark secret (the Shinigami's existance, along with the Death Note).

Overall, the shows have an incredible amount of content in common, while being completely distinct stories. Both are excellently written and very, very well directed and both can easily be considered masterpieces.

The main thing that you may wish to consider is that Code Geass starts (moderately) slowly and gets more and more intense as time passes, with an incredible open end. Death Note, however, starts off incredibly intense, but, later in the series (in many peoples opinions, including mine) tapers off to an extent, with a fairly unsatisfactory ending. Both, however, are absolutely worth a watch.

Just two of the best animes ever, what else could I say? The concept of controlling others is something very similar in both series, though I think in code geass it goes further politically and philosophically.

I could go on and on about how similar light and lelouch are but to get to the point I will say that they are both tragic heros that set out to change the world but eventually they drifted into insanity.

muse87 muse87 says...

Both series are very similar, in that they portray how easily power can destroy a person. Both shows deal with charactars that have to make difficult decisions to reach their end goal. Light in death note, first aspires to create a better world by killing off all the criminals, but this ambtion later turns into wanting to become a god. Lelouch doesn't change his goals as radically as Light, but he still becomes egotistical in himself, and suffers a variety of consequences as a result. The great about both shows is that they really do an excellent job of showing are easily humans are corrupted by power. I'd definitely recommend both series to everyone.

Amadeus01 Amadeus01 says...

If you are hungry for more when seeing one the other is probably a most suitable choice towards your satisfaction. Both story plots are focusing on their main chracters each with an amazing skillset which includes intelligence, manipulation, admirable analytical abilities, risktaking, ruthlessness, a special power as well as how they use it to achive their goals.

Main differences are that Code Geass is in a future-like world while Death Note is in a present-like world, Death Note's Light is hugely self centered wanting to be a god while Code Geass's Lelouch is a bit more down to earth having mostly purest ideals (excluding the neverending quest for vengeance). Furthermore Light is much more willing to do anything to achive his goal not caring for anything or anyone which is not the case with Lelouch.

PandaBear87 PandaBear87 says...

They both feature a high school aged boy with a God complex who's Hell-bent on changing the world for the better.

Sean12697 Sean12697 says...

Code Geass is quite reminiscent of Death Note, where the main character is fighting on his own morals for a better world. Lelouch (Code Geass) and Light (Death Note) both achieve this by manipulating people with their power under an alias (Lelouch being Zero and Light being Kira) whilst trying to live a normal life as a student as well.

ccallstar111 ccallstar111 says...

Both question the morality of humanity and what it costs to achieve justice. The main characters have a deranged sense of justice and are highly intelligent. They each use people as pawns as if they are playing chess. The shows keep you on the edge of your seat and have satisfying endings (although Code Geass has a better ending).

Both were masterpieces uncomparable to any anime I've ever seen. Both were written incredibly well with captivating stories and characters that will move, shake, and rock you. These anime are what I use to judge other anime. In otherwords, these are my base line for an anime rating of 10/10.

wiffle wiffle says...

They are both about a battle of intelligence and strategy. The course of the conflicts have an impact on a national/global basis.

stevensrmiller stevensrmiller says...

They are both gritty, intensely moody and atmospheric stories about lonely people who have a hard time keep their emotions under control. Both protagonists are given awesome power to wield, and are trapped by destiny. If like things more on the grandiose scale, but focused on the individual, not the team, these will appeal to you.

armking armking says...

Both These shows are a classic.. the way the protagonists manipulate people is exemplary.. you'd like both these anime for the plot

RyuzakiLollipop RyuzakiLollipop says...

Both of them are quite similar in many ways.Lelouch is a lot like light from death note in a evilish chaotic way, if you actually saw any one of them then you would understand what i mean, in their own way they are good  people but then there is this chaotic good in them which is not so good but is also good.

Shizuka97 Shizuka97 says...

Yes, these two anime pretty much revolve around a devious and intelligient protagonist that tries to manipulate others to do their wishes.

Pretty awesome.

Frejsi Frejsi says...

They are really good anime. They make you think what will happend in the next episode. You know what. Just watch them, thats all i can say.

BakaGiant BakaGiant says...

Honestly, both of the animes have  asimilar psychological feel to them. If you like a character that is on more of the bad side of justice I feel like you would like these. Because of these similar characters they run into similar types of antagonists. So since they share such a unique type of plot line, it would be easy to say that liking one would give you a high respect and maybe even future liking to the other.

they're both really similar but very different at the same time and i love them both. i'd say code geass has more interesting characters, but death note's much more of a mystery-type anime than code geass. code geass is straight-up fighting a lot of the time, whereas death note focuses more on the characters, badly written though they can be at times.

Hawaii Hawaii says...

Hello everyone.

For me, Code Geass and Death Note have something same. Like a super power, Light have Death Note, Lelouch Geass power, they both trying to keep them real name's in shadow and fighting for better world.

Sorry for my bad English. I hope, I helped to you.

AnimeFan42 AnimeFan42 says...

Similarities; Both main characters start out as teenagers who are granted a power. When they obtain this power they want to change the world no matter how extreme. are are criminal masterminds believing that the world needs to change, and they are willing to cut down anyone who gets in their way

Differences; The main character on Death Note is willing to fight to the end, while the main character on Code Geass is always ready to give up after every loss

if u like to control everything, those two anime have the same idea behind of the script: 'im your god'

Light - Lelouch

Kucziczu Kucziczu says...

Both anime basically combine power and intelligence, which both main characters have. The power to manipulate human life or receive them with single pen stroke? Fights turned on intellect, not only muscle strength? These are things that come without any problem for main characters of both titles.

If you're looking for a brilliant strategist, in the role of the main character which wraps his enemies around little finger, these are the titles just right for you.

Rotaz Rotaz says...

Both anime deal with a boy who gains an ungodly power and use it for "evil" to try and create their ideal world with their insane amount of knowledge and strategy

RickGrimes RickGrimes says...

Both have a smart and cunning protagonist with same aim of "cleansing the world"

Code Geass is a tad bit more focused on action which death note replaces with amazing shounen styled drama.

Other common points include:- Good Animation, Good OST, Good and Intresting Characters.

If you are looking for a strategic, evilminded (disguised as good intentions) protagonist, these both anime's fit the bill. I love to follow the story because it's exciting and it keeps you on your toes. It's also difficult to know who to vouch for since the main character tends to be almost too evil, close to psycho. I love both the shows as they twist the perception of good vs evil.

KillerBear123 KillerBear123 says...

Same type of genius character but fighting as if it was a ches game. Very different stories with the comonality that they both have a great power and want to change the world.

hay0004 hay0004 says...

Both feature a smugly confident excellent student granted powers and transforming into a maniacal mastermind willing to engage morally dubious tactics to improve the world, in their view.

Caveat: Code Geass features giant mech fights, various abilities and technologies beyond modern capabilities, whereas stuck to a smaller set of relatively definite supernatural influences, and left it to the masterminds to work within those limitations. This could definitely be a deal-breaker, depending on genre interest.

AliveGhost AliveGhost says...

They both have the same type of storyline, the protaginist gets a new power and goes insane. In Death Note and Code Geass they trick people to do what they want with their newly aquired power, so it isn't very differenet.

altiar altiar says...

Both animes are mind games, each having a kamidere (god complex) main character. They both have a supernatural element, even though in Code Geass mecha dominates. There are also strong second characters in both that you relate or despise.

The narcissistic character in the main characters turns the anime into a kind of battle between strategists.Intelligences faced to achieve each one its aims.

Light Yagami from DN is a narcistic person who wanna change the world and be the rulership. He says he wants better world without crime. But still he is thinking just about himself.

Lelouch wants to change the wolrd too but he is more kind and more human tnat the main character from DN (Light).

Thats why I like them but DN is my most favorite anime and CG is the second one.

Both Anime series feature Protagonists who are very brilliant who obtain a special power which allows them to effect the whole World.

Throughout both animes, the plot focuses on the plans and schemes that these characters create to stay 1 step ahead in a psychological battle against their opponent. And the actions of both protagonists are morally questionable and can make you question what is really "right" and "wrong". Both shows strive to be thrillers rather than focus too much on the morality of the characters.

2 Great anime.Death Note is one of the most iconic and known anime of the last 20years.One of the most beautifoul of that theme, incredible story, good animation 8even for an "old anime), EPIC Music (soundtrack/ost) and amazing characters. It's a must see anime for new comers in this wolrd.Code geass is really the successor of Death Note, in my opinion not so good like the first but the characters are well designed and the story is really interesting.Almost same ideal for the 2 main character but with different shape of behaviour.

This one goes without saying. Both series focus on super intelligent teenage guys. Both have a borderline god complex with a strong sense of justice. On top of that they are willing to sacrifice almost anything to achieve their goals.

Cranmango Cranmango says...

These two could not be more different in execution but if you like characters with supernatural means to enforce their own form of justice, then yeah watch these slippery slopes. Plus Code Geass has giant robots.

KiraUchiha KiraUchiha says...

Whilst very different animes code geass scratches the same itch death note does. If you want an anime where the protaga is could quiet easily be the antagonist then this is for you

FriendlyDemon FriendlyDemon says...

Both anime follow highschool students with extraordinary intellect in their quest to change the world with the aid of some sort of supernatural power. Both main characters try to navigate thier own morals and ethichs (sometimes making questionable decisions and disregarding consequences) while trying to remain on the right side of good and evil, all in the name of justice. What is the price of reaching your goal and can they pay it?

If you like suspense, battle of wits and plot twists then try both of this series.

Similarities:

  1.  Main character - Light and Lelouch want to take over the world and they are manipulating and killing people for that purpouse. Both characters have a lot of similar traits too, for example god complex.
  2.  Main plot - take over the world (but Code Geass compared to Death Note has much more interesting elements of the story).
  3.  Dark moments - sometimes these animes can be scary, unbelievable and even drastic.

Chyby667 Chyby667 says...

Death Note and Code Geass starts out with two teenagers who wanted the world to be a better place. However, in order to achieve the "better" world, they committed morally questionable actions.

The two protagonists have issues with pride. Light Yagami has god complex, while Lelouch vi Britannia is pretty destructive as a person due to his pride. They are also popular in school, because they are handsome and they have good grades. Light and Lelouch are very popular around the girls.

The two protagonists are also equipped with Supernatural Powers and they have Supernatural Companions. E.g Light Yagami has Ryuk, Lelouch vi Britannia has C.C.

And they also have rivals, who are also morally questionable that happens to attend the same school as they do for "Investigation" E.g Suzaku Kururugi and L Lawliet.

They're both intellectually engaging, but not exactly an apples to apples comparison.  Code Geass also has a fair number of action scenes, while Death Note is mostly bereft of these scenes and moves a tad slower.  Both will reward you if you stick with them long enough, and I consider each to be a classic.

koyelah koyelah says...

Code geass and death note are similar in so many ways. But first might be about the MC. Lelouch and light are both smarter than average, they both have a sense of justice that will happen to be proven once they receive the power they always wanted/needed to change the world, and ofc they're not too idealist to ignore that they will have to get their hands dirty for their dream's sake. there's also a similarity between the entity from whom they receive their power. C.C and Riyuk are both immortal, and accompanies the protagonists only for their personal objective. Ryuk only eats Apples and C.C has always been shown eating Pizza lol. they've a lot in common that's why i think once one watch Code geass/Death note and likes it; that person will undoubtely likes the other one

Reasons you might like Monster...

Budweineken Budweineken says...

Both have a dark atmosphere and good amount of drama, with psychological aspects.

Dante135 Dante135 says...

You would like Monster because both it and Death Note have dark atmospheres that deal with the the value of human life, and the consequences of taking it away. They also have great, well developed characters.

Preutz Preutz says...

If you enjoyed the dark, gritty tone of one, then you'll definitely like that of the other. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions, and the protagonists in Death Note and Monster are both brilliant persons with a deep-rooted sense of justice, which ironically leads them to make the wrong choices for the right reasons. Set in a realistic modern world, both storylines involve a cat-and-mouse chase between a tragic hero and a villain of terrfying intellect and charm. There is little humor in both anime series; instead, they explore the value of human lives in an unique angle and seek to challenge our traditional perceptions of clear-cut right and wrong.

SlinkyABC SlinkyABC says...

While Monster and Death Note have very different and unrelated stories, one can't mistake the somber tone that sets the mood for each series. Each anime takes itself very seriously and explores different moral and social issues. Also, both series have similar (and very good) animation and production values.

If you find yourself attracted to the character designs and the deep moving stories that also function as a kind of social commentary in one series, I can almost guarantee you'll like the other. Please note that Monster is more slower-paced than Death Note is, but that's not to say that its pacing doesn't add to the overall value of the series.

kmull kmull says...

Monster and Death Note are very much alike in general mood and theme, particularly since they both have a heavy psychological component. One difference is particularly striking -- in Monster, the antagonist kills people with seemingly no rhyme or reason while being chased by a slew of individuals caught in the path of madness, while in DN, the protagonist kills criminals to rid the world of evil and cleverly avoids detection. Monster has more character development and side plots, while DN gives you a quick but eventful trip through the story.

Lewis16 Lewis16 says...

It's been said before here, but both Monster and Death Note deal brilliantly with the darker, more sinister aspects of human nature; and so if you enjoyed the dark side of one, you'd like the other too.

tasanime tasanime says...

If you ever wanted to know what would happen to the human psyche once man has the power to take away human life, then Death Note and Monster are about the best insight you'll ever get. Both provide an in-depth, highly intense view of murderers and their pursuers in a fast-paced, psychological twister of a chase of cat and mouse.

quippy quippy says...

Death Note and Monster are two masterpieces of anime with a high psychological aspect and a lot of very well-developed characters.

Both examine the question of "what is right and wrong" and keep you thinking!

SatoshiJiro SatoshiJiro says...

Suspense and a twisting storyline to back it up are certainly a great combination; you'll see this in both Monster and Death Note.

Just when you think you have things figured out, something new will be thrown into the open and you're left trying to solve the riddle, once again.

Both have something for the thriller fan inside of you. Whether you're into mystery or drama, you won't finish these titles unsatisfied.

Adam Adam says...

In both cases the issue of morality in its truest form, that is the frontier between good and evil, is explored via highly tense psychological thrillers. Monster is highly realistic and portrays a very believable world while Death Note has a supernatural element to it; in both the viewer is forced to think and make choices toward deciding who the real villains are and just what it is that makes one individual evil.

XTJ7 XTJ7 says...

The similarities of the series are quite astounding, good and bad fighting each other in an intellectual way, thinking around 2 and more corners is a requirement for both. Although the perspective in Monster is the good chasing the bad, while in Death Note the bad is mostly shown being chased by the good, they are still pretty similar in their style. If you like trying to figure out what happens next and lots of turnarounds are welcome to you, both series are much more than just pretty enjoyable.

thecelestialkid thecelestialkid says...

Monster shares the same sense of crime-solving who-woulda-done-it-omg-i-know-who-did-it-but-whats-gonna-happen-oh-no storyline as Death Note. Though Death Note has that kinky shinigami death book thing goin on Monster gives you more of a psychological slap in the face over and over. Their climaxes are impressive and unlike Death Note they're not as predictable. If you like Death Note Monster is worth your time to attempt to comprehend.

suiru suiru says...

Both "Death Note" and "Monster" are what can be summed up as a "thinking man's" anime. People who can appreciate a well thought out storyline and compelling characters will enjoy both, and find them compulsively watchable.

shazbob shazbob says...

Monster and Death Note explore and raise moral questions, the first questioning whether it is right to become a murderer in order to kill a murderer, whereas the latter explores if it is right to become a murderer to kill criminals.

Both are psychological thrillers that leave you at the edge of your seat and pleading for the following episodes.

UltimateShinobi UltimateShinobi says...

Both anime are about stopping a monster. While Death Note shows the life of the monster, Monster shows the life of the creatorof the moster.

Szwagier Szwagier says...

Both are good criminal series, portraying very well developed evil main antagonist, whose main power is manipulation.

Of course there are differences - Monster is more realistic, and the mastermind stays mostly in the shadows (which is opposite to Death Note where main character is the main antagonist as well) . But even with all the realism the aura of mystery (which surrounds Kira in Death Note) is still pretty strong, and very often through the series watcher will question himself - does the paranormal occur here?

fullmetalstrawberry fullmetalstrawberry says...

Brilliant. Psychological Thriller. A villain that is so twisted and brilliant he will leave you begging for more.

Both Monster and Death Note hold these qualities - whether it is Johan causing an entire town to implode on itself, or Light bending the world to his will you will find yourself unable to take your eyes off the screen. If you liked Monster you will love Death Note. If you liked Death Note you will love Monster.

This show's got what you need!

cerberus38 cerberus38 says...

Monster and Death Note deal with similar themes, such as the value of a human life, cat and mouse games between antagonists, etc. Whilst Death Note aims to be cooler and Monster has far superior characterisation, both series have extremely engaging storylines. I'm sure if you like the psychological thriller genre you should check out these series.

Linkums Linkums says...

After I watched Death Note, I thought that I'd never again see an anime that so thoroughly satisfied my hunger for intelligent mystery and drama. I was wrong. Monster is brilliant, dark, intelligent, and suspenseful. Don't be daunted by its length; it's excellent.

Kaorichaos Kaorichaos says...

The police vs. a lone figure that is almost fabled and has no valid proof of exhistance. Suspense, Dark tones, and a deadly game of cat and mouse.  You can be sure to find all of these in both animes.

Richard0 Richard0 says...

I think Monster is underrated as opposed to Death note which is overrated but both are great series to watch. The key elements that correlate in Death note and Monster is that they both involve a psychological element in the story, also the characters themselves are very intelligent. The thing about both is that you have two antagonists who are pretty much unbeatable due to their high intellect.

But that is where the similarity ends; while both are relatively dark animes, monster is much darker and has little to no comic relief moments unlike Death note which shows a comic side to many of their characters (misa misa and L notably).

What I can say for sure is that if you liked the battle of wits of one anime you'll be equally blown away by another, both thrilling and filled with suspense; Yagami Light and Johan Liebert are both among some of the best villains you'll ever see as well.

ReviewGirlXIII ReviewGirlXIII says...

Both have a  "dark" atmosphere, and question reality as we believe it to be. In Monster, we see that the hospital is run by politics, and Dr. Tenma gets punished and ends up on the run because be went against orders. In Death Note, Light sees the corruption of the justice system he was raised to believe in - he sees the faults and tries to "correct" them...

DeathNote just like monster is full of twist and turns, that leave you wanting more.

if you stopped after every few episodes to try and figure out what was going to happen, you will love deathnote.

both very macbre, however deathnote has comic releif and a much faster pace.

Monster is more about humanity as a whole and deathnote looks more closely at individuals.

both are excelent thrillers that leave you wanting more.

Wickerman Wickerman says...

As I like to say... Monster is Death Note but turned upside down with but with a working brain and a human heart. Perhaps you were starting to get into anime at a later age and was directed to Death Not. If so, then this os what lies beyond that road.  Monster's art direction is also in the style of German Expressionism like Death Note. (look it up, its amazing).

Kushasha Kushasha says...

Couldn't agree more. It's really hard to find an anime in the same line of death note: great story, intelligent thriller, suspense, beautiful art, awesome characters (however nobody can replace L on that matter)^^ More than 100 episodes and no fillers! Enjoy!

derv derv says...

My 2 all time favourite animes! They both come under psychological, mystery, suspense, thriller.. and they both deal with their dark themes in a very mature way. Unlike other 'psychological' animes such as 'Another' or 'Higurashi', these animes require alot of thought, and are in no way childish or badly written. They really make you think, and after watching one episode you cannot wait to watch the next! :)

Hutai Hutai says...

After watching death note I couldn't find an anime that would be as good as this one. But when I tried Monster I knew that they are alike. The story is really good. You might thing that for this anime there's too much episodes, but no. All these episodes are for a great character and story developing. You loved Kira and L, you're gonna love doctor Tenma, Johan, Lunge and others.  Both animes gets you more affected to the characters and story. Choosing the sides  good or evil. Both Death note and Monster has a dark atmosphere, great story and characters, soundtracks and what I really love is the art style. It's not the anime with the rainbow hairstyles and eyes. It's realistic. Also many details and it's really beautiful.

If you're looking for an anime as spot on glorious as death note, you let me know when you find it, because I've been looking for looooong.

however, this show has a very interesting plot, involving murder, mystery, confusion, and tragedy.

I know if you want a Death Note spawn, this will not satisfy your urge, but it will give you a great appreciation that although a story can be so incredibly contradictory in comparison, it can still some how relate to certain context in away you will truly appreciate.

At least give it 2 or 3 episodes for a go. You'll probably watch more after, but all are different.

YariMari YariMari says...

Both are dark, psychological anime that question morale and justice, but through different perspectives. In Monster, the MC wants to stop a serial killer, and in Death Note the MC is the serial killer.

0oDaano0 0oDaano0 says...

Mystery, suspense, fleshed out and mature. Both these series are dark and full with murder. We know early on who's the badguy and goodguy and they are constantly closing in yet miles apart.

Both use unique angles and shots, use facial expressions and shadow and are just "complete" in details, especially for such long series. Voice cast and music are simply brilliant in both with Death Note having the better opening and Monster the better ending (the Japanese versions).

Both are among the best I've ever seen, perhaps Monster is slightly better to me.

Don't hesitate to start on these longer series, they'll pay off, leaving you shattered. The only con I found is that all series watched soon after ones like these feel empty.

Aelphais Aelphais says...

Both series revolve around the anti-hero trying to take over the world. Death Note is a darker themed version of the genre, and Code Geass has mech elements, but both series provide an interesting outlook on tyranny.

Though there isn't as much action in Death Note as there is in Code Geass, honestly, I don't believe that is the point of either anime. They're more psycological. If you liked the psycological factor of one, its the same issue in the other one. Though both are pleasantly different, they have the same aura, and I don't know anyone who like one but not the other.

Mantis Mantis says...

Both of these anime series share something in common, and that is a protagonist with a desire to change the world. Such a powerful desire though can lead to many dangers and a dysfunctional personality, as you will find from observing Lelouch from Code Geass and Light from Death Note.

Interestingly, Lelouche and Light are very similar in how they share a very deceptive personality, and how throughout the two series it's often a battle of logic between the protagonist and his nemesis.

These two series have a lot in common, and I can guarantee that if you liked one you will like the other.

Jack14456 Jack14456 says...

Death Note and Code Geass both follow a similar principle: High school student gets a strange power, in one case the Death Note and the other Geass, and try to change the world with it. Both weilders of the power have amazing thinking capabilities and are the most brilliant strategists of their world, knowing both themselves and everyone around them far too well because of their personal behavior.

tsurugiayame tsurugiayame says...

Both anime focus on deathmatch between two masterminds. In both cases you will probably side with the evil one, even though it depends on point of view. Both baddies are just brilliant and you always wonder how the heck are they gonna solve this problem. Also both series focus on moral dilemma. Is it bad to kill criminal? Is it right to set free your country at all costs? How far are you able to go to fullfill your mission? Are you able and willing to sacrifice your own life for your dream? These are questions you will ask yourself after you saw both of these series.

And also... final scenes of both these anime are just going to catch you unprepared... you will not be able to tell whether the ending is good or not.

If you want to watch and think a little and not just watch, then watch these anime.

Both series feature an Anti-Hero protagonist, with an almost unobtainable goal.  Until each acquire an incredibly powerful tool which allows them a chance to grasp their goal.  Zero/Lelouch gains the Geass, Kira/Light gains the Death Note.  If you like one, you will undoubtedly love the other.

both Code Geass R2 and Death Note feature similar male lead characters, both Lelouch and Light are willing to change the world into a better place where everyone can live peacefuly and they are willing to do it by using any means necesary, even if that means sacrificing the persons they love or even themselves. If you liked one i am sure you will enjoy the other one as well.

Both shows are about teenager who tries to be god of a new world. Both of them are students with high intelligent, so it's not hard for them to manipulate with other people. Kira and Lelouch are trying to create a world without badness, because they have their own purpose for doing that. Kira and Lelouch chose very cruel way of doing that.  Even though Code geass has more action, it's really similar to Death note.

Itachi14 Itachi14 says...

If you liked Death Note or Code Geass, you'd like other because Death Note = Code Geass. It's not copy of each other but it's very very simmilar. They has many things in common. The stories and characters of both animes are very simmilar. The difference is that Code Geass has more action.

As Yagami Light wants to destroy all the evil in the world, Lelouch wants the same. They both wants to make a new world and be the God of that world.

There's more things in common between these animes, but I won't write them because I don't want to spoil you.

NoCheerios NoCheerios says...

Both the first and second season of Code Geass display an anti-hero whose main objective is good. If you watch one and like it, i would definately recommend watching this. This sequel is very well put together.

Both Zankyou no Terror and Death Note have a strong focus on fighting crime that requires a bit of mystery solving to complete. Similar theme.

In Death Note the main character's motives and goals are introduced to the viewer early on, while in Zankyou no Terror the main characters are mysterious and their past or motives aren't explained in the beginning.

In both series the main characters are highly intelligent, able to outplay the authorities big time.

So far the concept is pretty much the same, the police are doing their best to catch the villain with pretty bad results. As in both series the villain does a very skillful job at denying the authorities.

Only really big difference so far in the series is that in Death Note the main villain, Light Yagami doesn't care of who he has to kill to obtain his goals, while in Zankyou no Terror the main villains, Nine and Twelve do their best not to cause any casualties.

Death Note is equally as screwed up as Zankyou no Terror. The artwork is beautiful (especially for the time) and provides and engaging, mysterious story that leaves you on the edge of your seat. The main protagonist is a villian trying to change the world order for the "better", but is somehow relatable.

Just like Zankyou no Terror, the antagonist is a detective genius, with a mysterious past and an extreme sense of justice. So if you've just finished DN and need something to watch, watch ZT. If you've run out of episodes for ZT and haven't seen DN, then watch that :).

Pretty hard to compare these two, because altough they are similar, they are also very different. I would say that every aspect of ZnT has a bit of Dn in it with a lot of changes. Smart, planning character, who is a bit antisocial, but completely different motives. DN focuses on the battle between Yagami and L, while ZnT focuses more on the psychology, also the latter has higher scale action. Without any spoilers I can assure you that if you liked Death Note and have problems finding something similar, then Zankyou no Terror(I assume you watched Code Geass already) will come closest too it.

They're both about teenage genius(es) who decide to try and change something about the world through mass murder. A eccentric genius is assigned to stop them and a fierce, high-stakes competition ensues. Terror in Resonance is a nearly perfect concept match for Death Note, although the characters motives, personalities, and methods are completely different.

I agree with this,

The psychological warfare and feel are similar. As well as the backgrounds of loved characters within Death Note such as L, Near, B, Matt, and Mello are similar to the backgrounds of the main focuses within Terror in Resonance. The ideas of Light and a main 'antagonist' are also similar in some ways. This is why I recommend both ways.

Hell Girl

Hell Girl

Has someone done something to hurt you or the ones you love? Are you seeking revenge? Rumor has it that there’s a website that can service your needs. Titled “Hotline to Hell”, it contains a form that can be accessed only at midnight. Type in a name, and the Hell Girl will carry out your bidding – for a price. For though your appetite for revenge will be satisfied, your soul will also be condemned to hell after you die. But who is the Hell Girl, and does she care whether your revenge is justified? Apparently not, as long as she gets more souls…

RaineDelmont RaineDelmont says...

Hell Girl, like Death Note, has the same concept, more or less. Yagami Light is able to kill using the Death Note by writing a name into the book, while in Jigoku Shoujo, Hell Girl has a website in which a person can enter a name and send that person to hell.

Himitsu Himitsu says...

Jigoku Shoujo and Death Note both deal with the overall theme of death, and take it quite lightly. Both anime deal with the decisions and values of humanity. The colours and tones are quite dark, and each story is certainly one to keep you at the edge of your seat. The characters in Death Note are much more "cool" and the execution is much more fast and intense. Loved the aesthetic areas of Jigoku Shoujo (art, character designs, music).

freakzilla freakzilla says...

Jigoku Shoujo and Death Note have a similar concept: judging those that are not pure of heart. This is of course a dark and serious theme which raises the main question, "what gives someone the right to judge others?"

Death Note has a far more advanced story (which is why not everyone will also like Jigoku Shoujo), but the atmosphere is definitely comparable.

faerieponey faerieponey says...

Are you a fan of life after death stories? Or, are you just interested in how people can be manipulated? If so, then you should really consider watching both Death Note and Jigoku Shoujo.

MeloColi MeloColi says...

Death Note and Jigoku Shoujo are both very dark anime. They are also both very good; they will make you think! Death Note is really a mind game and Jigoku Shoujo is more about about doing the right thing (or else you'll go to hell =P) , but they are both dark and really make you think. If you liked one, then you will like the other.

frozenbum frozenbum says...

Death Note and Hell Girl are really based on the same premise. In Hell Girl, you can exact revenge by writing a person's name on a website, while in Death Note, the main character kills people by writing their names into a notebook. If you're into psychological thrillers with grim settings, both of these anime are worth checking out.

vernanonix vernanonix says...

Hell Girl and Death Note are both very similar in the way people die. Should someone type a name on a website in Hell Girl, they are condemned to Hell. Should one's name be written in the Death Note, they die. Both anime are rather dark but are intense and thought-provoking.

Axoloth Axoloth says...

Both series have a sort of dark feel about them, and neither have any face faults (sweat drops and the like). Although Jigoku Shoujo doesn't have a mad mastermind that kills bad guys, it has a cute girl that sends people to hell. So, I'm sure that if you liked the psychological Death Note, you'll probably like the mysterious Jigoku Shoujo as well. And the other way around too, of course.

Both animes are based on the same question -is it OK to kill evil people? - and they both show the consequences of the answer

Both series are about an human that has the ability to punish individuals who make themselves guilty of evil deeds. They do it with diferent methods though and if you liked one you would enjoy finding out in just what case the other is different yet so alike.

They have very alike content about wheter some people deserve to live or die. Both gives some info about the life after this. Both say Hell and Heaven exist and when using the power to kill someone in both anime you can't go to Heaven when you die. Death Note is far more intense and cool but Jikogu shoujo contains some excitement also. (A bit like a thriller)

nyuufan nyuufan says...

Both series are about doing what you think is right, but is not always right to other people. They deal with what you think is a sense of right and wrong. If you like one you'll like the other.

They both are about justice in my sense. Justice that gets out of hand. They think they are doing the right thing, but in turn they are not. They both have a unique feel to them. If you liked one, well then the other is a must see.

CarLoSG CarLoSG says...

in both series you can look how many persons believe that they can hold on the justice in their hand with the revenge, but this is only a way for their self destruction, and errors that they can't repair.

doomsday doomsday says...

Both series follow similar plot styles. Hell girl has people killed when their name is entered on a website, while Death Note has people killed when their name is written in a book. They also feature similar consequences for comitting these deeds. In Hell Girl, when you die, your soul belongs to hell. In Death Note, when you die, you never experience the joys of heaven or the torments of hell.

arc666 arc666 says...

Althaugh this anime starts out diffrent to death note they are in essence very similar they are both about someone that for some reason kill people who may have wronged someone else in someway and while the main character in death note gains his death note from a shinigami giving him access to the ability to kill people by mearly writing there name in the death note the main character in Jikoku shougo has some attributes that are normally found in shinigami such as red eyes and the ability to kill people without the use of weapons and very early in to both animes another character is introduced who is a detective and try to learn why so many people are being killed.

uDisConnect uDisConnect says...

Both Death Note and Hell Girl are both based on the theme death. Type a name in the Hell Girl website and the person's name you typied will die, write a name in Death Note and the preson will die. Use the Hell Girl website means selling you soul to the devil, writing a name in the Death Note and when u die you won't go to Hevan or Hell.

cassiesheepgirl cassiesheepgirl says...

Both Jigoku Shoujo and Death Note deal with a sense of justice that is dished out by the central protagonist. Both also tend give the viewer food for thought about whether those sentenced to death truly deserve their fate and is the price that's paid for dealing out this judgement worth it? If you like anime that is not only entertaining but also thought-provoking then both of these are for you.

They share the concept of revenge and giving humans the power over life and death via a supernatural device.

HawaiianLoveGirl22 HawaiianLoveGirl22 says...

There are some major similarities between the two animes. They are both about how each one takes lives because of a human's sins. But throughout both of the series, there is one person that wants to put a stop to the killing because they think it is wrong and unjust.

Not only that, the creativity of the plot and the characters, their emotions and actions, are planned out well and seem to grow on you with time. Both series tend to keep you on edge and wanting to watch more. If you like one, then you'll most likely like the other!

HollowNobody HollowNobody says...

If you enjoyed Death Note or Jigoku Shoujo then you would like the other because both shows deal with ideas of justice and revenge. They both center around the concept of if it is right or wrong to allow one person to determine the fate of another.

chii chii says...

Both anime are about taking the lives of people that have done wrong the main difference is that in death note only one character has the power to choose who dies. Death Note has an actual plot where Jigoku Shoujo is almost all episodic episodes with very little main plot. If you like the idea of getting revenge/justice at the cost of someones life check one out if you liked the other.

NerdyNorsman NerdyNorsman says...

Hell Girl and Death Note are based on almost exactly the same premises. In both series a regular person gets the oppurtunity to judge those he find to be evil, and end their lifes with the aid of supernatural powers. In Death Note it is thorugh a notebook and the aid of a death god or shinigami, in Hell Girl, it's through a website and with the aid of Hell Girl. Both series focuses on the moral and spiritual costs of revenge, and in both the series the person who accsept the bargin can look forward to a rather unplesant afterlife. The main differences between the series is that Death Note has a very fast paced storyline and works more like a modern TV thriller, and is a real mindgame. It's animation and overall style is slick and direct. Hell Girl has a more arty, surreal touch to it, and a more horror-like style. It's narrative is low pased and many episodes stands alone. You don't nessesarily have to follow the series from start to finnish like Death Note. If you like dark theemes both series should be up your ally.

Raspberries Raspberries says...

<html xmlns="">

Both anime deal with the morality of revenge, and revenge as a tool for justice. In Death Note, the "killer" is, in his own strange way, trying to do a positive thing for the world, while in Jigoku Shoujo, the "killer" is being contracted by those who think the killings are a positive thing. Fans of one may find enjoyment in the other.

FatalGlory FatalGlory says...

Both shows deal with the concepts of morality and death, whether it is Light killing with the Death Note or someone killing with Hell's correspondence. However Death Notes story is more complex than Hell Girl because hell girl is epasodic.

SinisterNight SinisterNight says...

For those fond of Death Note I think they will find Hell Girl a good option and vice versa. This is mostly because both series force the viewer to question themselves while watching this series. They both present issues that make you evaluate your own morals and wonder 'what would I do in this situation'. To put it simply they are both in some way a more 'intellectual' series that encourage you to think about what is happening. Both Hell Girl and Death Note share a common bond in art as well. As far as color schemes go Hell Girl and Death Note are very similar. Their use of colors and shadows to emphasis certain scenes and emotions are nearly spot on. Additionally when darker scenes come about you will usually find a dramatic increase in detailing in both series. In the end I think that in general most that enjoyed either of these series would find the other interesting and worth viewing.

Aurora3500 Aurora3500 says...

Both shows revolve around the theme of death. With Light from Death Note using a notebook that can kill people in the name of justice. Being similar with Enma Ai from Jigoku Shoujo taking requests from her clients submitted on her website to take revenge on someone who has hurt the client.

Chances are if you loved one and enjoy the theme presented in that one. Then you'll love the other as well

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Psycho-Pass

Psycho-Pass

In the future, a system called Sibyl presides over the country and provides order to every facet of life. It dictates which job fields citizens should go into based on aptitude tests, and can even read each resident's mental state and predict which ones are likely to commit crimes in the future. Fresh from exams, Akane Tsunemori is beginning her career as an Inspector, a specialized police officer who works to apprehend these latent criminals and stop crimes before they happen. But not all that get caught are eliminated or jailed, some join the police force as Enforcers to provide insight into criminals’ minds, and Akane is warned not to get too close to them, as they're considered little more than hunting dogs. Though skeptical of this advice, and Sibyl's judgement, Akane is determined to work together with her Enforcers to protect the peace of her city and its inhabitants.

What strikes me as similar about Death Note and Psycho-pass is that they both ask similar heavy questions about justice and the treatment of criminals. The premise in both revolves around a method of controlling crime before it happens, and the human drama that follows revolves largely around the police and their role in society.

These two may not seem similar at face.  They sure as hell don't have similar plots.  However these anime's are both well drawn, animated, and are very dialogue heavy. These both have pretty badass unique story lines and you're not sure who the bad guy is either.  Something that doesn't happen very often in modern anime is a strong male character.. here's two animes have em.  I'd recommend this anime to anyone who doesn't suck :).

Kelose Kelose says...

Both are suspense thrillers that focus on the exploits of vain morally questionable geniuses. Death Note is seen through the eyes of the villain while Psycho-Pass is seen through the eyes of the hero. They contrast each other nicely and could conceivably have been set in the same world.

Chitaka Chitaka says...

Both of these awesome anime are great for anybody who likes gripping moral gray areas, major suspense and well-developed characters you either loathe or cheer for through the entire series. Both Death Note and Psycho pass explore very similar questions of what is "justice" and what is "right" or "wrong" in dealing with crime. Death Note takes a supernatural approach to this where Psycho Pass is more realistic, which is the scary part. Light in Death Note is essentially trying to become a one-man Sybil System. Both anime also explore what happens if a well-meaning individual falls to the dark-side of justice. Both are equally as suspenseful, gripping and visually appealing on top of making you seriously question your own morals and those of society.

They are both stories that dive deeper in humans' thoughts and emotions, and how they control you. They are actually psychological though have action and cause-and-effect relations. Both series are pointed at the same audience. Both series have a well-constructed and considered plot which can't be doubted. They've got similarities and differences though a little of the same feeling. It's the perfect combination to watch.

The psychological thrill in either anime matches the other quite well. Personally I prefer Psycho-Pass, due to the fact that the psychological aspect isn't as heavy (meaning I didn't have to think so much). But, I think that you could watch either of them alone or in a group and still get wrapped into the stories very quickly.

Neskreudn Neskreudn says...

If your into the psychological warfare of Death Note, then Psycho-Pass is another good anime to make your mind swim in the crazy thoughts and feelings of the world. Psycho-Pass will make you think in a different way about crime.

Amadeus01 Amadeus01 says...

Their strongest connection is the word Justice which will be constantly in question through What is Right and What is Wrong, inarguably capable of subjecting the viewer to quite the debate (well even if you don'y enjoy doing as such, still it is very compelling through both of them that such a question be entertened in your mind even for a little) between the two in numerous  situaition as to which should prevail, what should have had been done in the alternative.

Main differences: Death Note is in a present-like world where death gods/shinigami seem to exist and also requires a lot of attention to follow and understand. While Psycho-Pass on the other hand is in a future-like world without superntural things and does not require much attention (less than Death Note anyway) making it easier to follow and understand.

Brino Brino says...

Both series have strong philosophical and ethical undertones that are tricking the audience into rethinking their morales and values. And also both animes show up that a perfect and peaceful society is possible - if you are willing to sacrifice the lifes of a particular percent of people that do not fit into this new and stable world. The protagonists in Psycho-Pass are often put into situations that are hardly solved for the better of all persons involved - a quite familliar setting when you compare it with ambivalent Light Yagami or his successor L.

Both Death Note and Mirai Nikki start off with the main character recieving a tool of potential mass destruction from a godlike existence. Even though the main characters are polar oposites in terms of personality, they both face similar challenges in which they have to use their tool to defeat -- in most instances, kill -- the many rivals they face throughout the series. There is a similar degree of mystery and suspense in both series; they blurr the lines between friend or foe, good or evil, and you never know when the enemy is going to strike next.

I must say that the future is literally as well as figuratively in the hands of the characters in both Death Note and Mirai Nikki! Having watched some episodes (but completed the manga) of Death Note, comparatively-speaking, Mirai Nikki has powerful similarity.

The battle between supposedly good and evil is subtle in Death Note, but the human desire for power is even more well-presented in Mirai Nikki.

The drama and suspense in both series is excellent. Both of these anime are also greatly executed anime counterparts of their original manga series.

If you enjoy death, high-stakes, and realistic but overdramatized (for the sake of entertainment) characters I highly recommend both Mirai Nikki and Death Note!

We also have deities that are more or less just spectators.  Death Note is much smarter, also Mirai Nikki has way more action, but I think that if you enjoy one, you will enjoy the other.

While mirai nikki is much simpler in some aspects to death note, I like the overall stylistic feel to every character's (main and otherwise) design in mirai more. I also feel they both give off a dark vibe and the main characters morality shifts over the course of the show.

Black Butler

Black Butler

In Victorian England it is commonplace for the rich and wealthy to have a staff, led by a head butler, to run their households; the Phantomhive Estate is no different. The young and demanding Count Ciel Phantomhive, child owner of a toy company, lives in the grand countryside manor. Sebastian is his head butler, and the epitome of perfection; he effortlessly and gracefully completes his day-to day chores and fixes the countless mistakes of the other employees. However, whilst on the outside all seems prim and proper, a more sinister secret lies just beneath the surface. Sebastian is in fact a demon bound by a contract with the young count; he will loyally serve and fight for him in return for his soul.

Rohjake Rohjake says...

The main characters in both, Death Note and Kuroshitsuji, get something supernatural to their lives (Light finds a death note and Ciel gets a "one hell of a butler") and they use those things to achieve their personal goals.

Both series also feature death gods (shinigami) that play quite an important role as the plot thickens.

Death Note and Kuroshitsuji both have this dark atmosphere (although that is relieved a little bit by the means of comedy in Kuroshitsuji) which is caused by devious plotting and it just sucks the viewer in.

Emilicious Emilicious says...

Both are great, pretty fast paced animes with great plots (at least so far, I haven't finished Black Butler!) c:

StarryNhite StarryNhite says...

both have dark themes. The main characters, Ciel and Light, are young and rather than portrayed as innocent "angels" show the side of humanity we know we are all capable of- revenge, hate, a desire to control ourselves and our surroundings. The willingness to do whatever it takes, use whatever tools at their disposal, to achive their goals, whether it's a demon butler, a notebook of death, shinigami, or the people around them.

CrimsonRose CrimsonRose says...

Both follow protagonists that have a ruthless disposition and a willingness to sacrifice anything to achieve their goals. They use the otherworldly beings that appeared before them as tools to change their world to match their desires. The story arcs are fairly similar to each other. Finally, the main characters have an otherworldly helper, a demon in Kuroshitsuji and a shinigami in Death Note.

VampGirl VampGirl says...

They both have a good scary atmoshere, that makes you wanna see more of it.

While in Kuroshitsuji the main characher Ciel has a demon butler in Death Note Light has a death god as servent.

Carmelien Carmelien says...

I enjoyed both Death Note and Kuroshitsuji. I found that Kuroshitsuji is better for people who like occasional unexpected humour. Death Note is a lot more involved and is very deep in plot. It would be hard to start in the middle of the series and pick up all of the plot correctly.

Both animes are rather short but are certainly worth watching. They have very similar dark undertones, and both Light (Raito) Yagami and Ciel Phantomhive are somewhat likable characters, despite their attitudes.

They are both detective animes, where the main characters have to fight to survive. Kuroshisuji is based in Victorian Times and Death Note is more modern. Both animes have supernatural characters in, and have different ideas of death and beyond.

Yuune Yuune says...

They both have sort of a dark theme to it with the main character having some kind of demon thingy following thme around everywhere. (Ryuk + Sebastian). They both have a plot of solving cases (Though in Kuroshitsuji it's more of a side-plot) as well.

AmiWolverineMarvel AmiWolverineMarvel says...

I recommed Black Butler if you watch Death Note is because of the style it has. It's theme is a dark mystery type of theme. Like how in Death Note it involves a bit of England (like how Wammy House is in England) but in Black Butler it is only set in England but only in a less mordern timeline, unlike in Death Note the anime is set in the 2000's. It also has a guide type of person to guide the main character to accomplish thier goal such as Light Yagami and Ryuk (Death Note) and Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian (Black Butler). Both animes have the same type of characters but kind of have the same plot such getting revenge on those who wrong the protagnoist of both animes. That is the reason why I recommed Black Butler if you watch Death Note.

Both shows have a supernatural component. Death Note has Shinigami while Kuroshitsuji has angels, demons, and death reapers. Both are gory and dark. Each has a sense of mystery; in Death Note, Light Yagami is trying to lead L astray from the fact that he is Kira, while in Kuroshitsuji, Ciel Phantomhive is trying to figure out who killed his parents. Both main characters seek justice while using the supernatural as an aid.

Eden of the East

Eden of the East

In the year 2010, on a day called ‘Careless Monday', ten missiles hit the cities of Japan; miraculously, there are no casualties and the event quickly fades from public memory. Some time later, Saki Morimi decides to visit Washington, DC on her graduation trip to America, but that day begins a series of bizarre events. After getting into trouble with the police, she's rescued by a young man who is completely naked save for a gun in one hand and an even stranger item in the other - a phone credited with 8 billion electronic yen and a female voice on the other end called Juiz who will fulfill his every wish. Having no recollection of his past and calling himself ‘Akira Takizawa', the young man accompanies Saki back to Japan in the hopes of discovering who he is. Akira's enigma quickly proves fascinating and Saki decides to help him rather than reunite with her family; but what neither realizes is that Akira is embroiled in a dark game of life and death linked to the Careless Monday missiles. Has Saki just made a terrible mistake, and can Akira unravel his own mystery before they both lose everything?

Both Death Note and Eden have a similar plot point in it, that out of no where the main character is given something that he is able to change the the world/country with.although this plot point changes in both animes.alot about these animes are different and similar in many ways. if u have seen either anime you would know that the main character finds out there are other people in the world/country, in the same situation as he is in (with a book or cellphone)this is another similarity.although this is slightly off a gut feeling i know u will like these animes. :)

Do you like the game? Do you want to lose the game? Death Note and Eden of the East both have a male protagonist struggling to come to grips with the rules and regulations of a rigid cage. Eden of the East and Death Note are two suspenseful shows in which mind games between characters play a big part in the story. In both shows, a young man is given a tremendous power, with which he has the ability to change the world to how he sees fit. Along the way, he meets opponents he has to slyly outsmart in order to continue his plan. While Eden of the East has more mystery to it, and Death Note better suspense, I feel that if you liked one of these series, the other will definitely appeal to you!

If you liked watching the thrill ride of Light's quest to inflict justice on the world, you'll likely enjoy the far superior Eden of the East. In it, people also struggle with how to use their newfound power, with plenty of mystery and suspense. Plus, fantastic animation and a great soundtrack.

Eden of the East and Death Note are both stories of an average guy gaining the power to change his world. What if you possesed an item that would help you become the ultimate saviour and ruler of your new, improved nation? Above all, if you possesed an item like that, would you be able to really save the world? Here's what two ordinary high school students Takizawa Akira (Eden of the East) and Yagami Raito (Death Note) did. One of them hero, one of them anti-hero, one of them successful and one of them not. Every for himself, one of them using others when in need of assistace and one of them gaining help from friends. These two fight for the same thing in the same way, and yet in a very different way and for a very diferent goal. one of them volounterily, and one of them forced. Epic and tragic tales of two young men fighting modern-day Japan society and law, and two very different turn-outs of the same race for creating a Utopia for the ordinary people. High stakes cat and mouse games done in a very sophisticated style - that is the spirit that Death Note and Eden of the East share. Death Note is gothic and plays with moral grey areas while Eden of the East is attempts the slick, high concept Hollywood format. Both of these anime evolve around the idea of bringing change to the world. Eden does it with cell phones, while Death Note does it with a little black book. He is aided by a girl, that despite barely knowing him, is completely devoted to him.

First if you are an L (DN) obsessor you with love Takizawa (EOTE) similar in many ways. cute, kind of mysterious, innocent acting... easy to love!

 Death not is my very favorite anime how ever in some way i feel that it missed afew things.( like a better romance then light and misa) {{{ also Eden of the east has a great love story. GREAT! }}}

both have mysterios story lines that keep turning corners. both have some action and a great mystery. also has you constantly switching sides of who is innocent and who is not. they also seem to be animated almost the same heck L and takizawa almost look and act like the same character in both animes. Both Animes are about a character or characters who are chosen to be something besides a normal person ( ex. for death not characters find the death note and for eden of the east characters are given a special cell phone in lame mans term)

oh also a shinigami and juiz remind me of the same kind of character. both are capable of alot more then normal humans :) haha in some ways....

anyway im almost worried i am giving away too much info....

hands down both are just freaking awesome! watch them both

Steins;Gate

Steins;Gate

The eccentric mad scientist Okabe, his childhood friend Mayuri, and the otaku hacker Daru have banded together to form the Future Gadget Research Laboratory, and spend their days in a ramshackle laboratory hanging out and occasionally attempting to invent incredible, yet generally useless, futuristic gadgets. However, their claymore is a hydrator and their hair dryer flips breakers, and the only invention that’s even remotely interesting is their Phone Microwave, which transforms bananas into oozing green gel. But when an experiment goes awry the gang discovers that the Phone Microwave can also send text messages to the past. And what's more, the words they send can affect the flow of time and have unforeseen, far-reaching consequences...

I got a pretty similar feel for watching both of them. Both series revolve around changing the world in some form, and the protagonists share some similarities.

Whilst Death Note is more around the existence of mankind and ridding the world of people who shouldn't exist, Steins;Gate is mainly centered around time travel, and conspiracies which lie within this act. Despite these differences, they both give off a very tense feel and leave the viewer hanging on at the end of each episode to find out more.

Both Death Note and Steins;Gate have complex plots with serious, dark moods.

While the two have a very different subject matter, Steins;Gate being Sci-Fi & Time Travel oriented while Death Note is fantasy and almost an exploration in to human nature, there's something familiar with the two of them that's difficult to place your finger on.

Death Note has an incredible start but, in the opinion of many, tapers off a little later in the show, with a particularly disliked ending, while Steins;Gate is slower to start and gets better and better.

Overall, however, the two, once again, have a darker mood to them, which is acompanied by a more grown up/adult demographic. Death Note is more serious than Steins;Gate, while Steins;Gate has a fair amount of comic relief mixed in with the seriously messed up ideas in it.

Both have incredibly plots which regularly leave you guessing what could happen next and they both have more than one aspect to their stories. This makes them more accessible to everybody and leaves a reasonable overlap in people who enjoy each series.
