5 Centimeters per Second

5 Centimeters per Second

Although today Tono Takaki and Shinohara Akari live far apart due to a family move shortly after elementary school, they were once two shy young students brought together by their shared differences from their peers. It is because of this that the two built a bond of closeness between them that still survives through their continued correspondence, even over such a distance. Secretly they both fear the loss of this bond over time, and for this reason they arrange a meeting between just the two of them. The journeys both of them take in their minds and in their lives create an atmosphere of intense emotional upheaval, but also a sense of peace. It is a twist of fate and a series of decisions that put the two in place to carry what they choose of their pasts into the future they will create for themselves.

Both these anime are about reflecting on life. 5 Cms is about romance and Dareka is about family, but both anime have the main character reflect on their past present in future to figure out what is important to them.

Dareka is short only six minutes long, but it's well worth the six minutes because the time is used very effectively. 5Cms is a full movie so there is more time for devlopment. But both these shows will evoke some feeling in the viewer and maybe just want them to go hug a loved one out of appreciation.

Both are works by Makoto Shinkai, and feature stunning animation and a highly emotional story that is told to perfection. Both revolve largely around two main characters, and follow them as their relationship, and their own thoughts change over time.

Both shows really are sentimental and have the same feel to them, but in the end Dareka no Manazashi is more optimistic than 5 Sentimeters per Second.

The Garden of Words

When Takao decides to skip school one day in favor of sketching in a rainy garden, he has no idea how much his life will change when he encounters Yukino. Older, but perhaps not as much wiser, she seems adrift in the world. Despite the difference in their ages, they strike up an unusual relationship that always occur in the same garden on each rainy day. But the rainy season is coming to a close, and there are so many things still left unsaid and undone between them.

If you're even the least bit sentimental then these are the shows for you. They are both deeply reflective about relationship and what they mean. Kotonoha is about a romantic relationship and Dareka is about the main character's changing relationship with her father. These are both anime that strike to the emotional core.

Dareka is much shorter than Kotonoha, but both are able to use their time effectively and evoke deep emotion in the viewer.

Brad Brad says...

Makoto Shinkai is at it again as creator of yet another stunningly animated bittersweet drama. Both manage to strike a chord with the viewer through the extremely well portrayed, and developed emotions of the characters.

They are also both fairly short, with Dareka being a short of little over five minutes. Kotonoha no Niwa may be considerably longer, but for a movie it still has a fairly short run time. Despite their short run time both are shining examples of how to write a story with real emotional weight behind it within a pretty narrow window of time.

Both shows really are sentimental and have the same feel to them and since they share the same director, if you've enjoyed watching one of them, you should definitely try the other too.

While the settings of these show are completely different they share very similar themes. Both anime are really about the changing nature of relationships over time. Both shows show how people can grow apart over time.

These shows do use very different methods to get to their point, but they both convey the same message which makes them a good pairing. If you liked one you should check out the other.

Brad Brad says...

While each show differs wildly in terms of plot and setting, they each manage to tell an exquisite emotional story of characters, and how their relationships with each other change over time.

Someone who enjoys the themes of one of these shows will most certainly enjoy the other.

She and Her Cat

She and Her Cat

As the seasons pass, a lone stray cat reminisces of life with his master. He talks of the small passions of their time together, and how their shared affection gives them each a reason to be alive. Speaking both of love gained and love lost, he chronicles the eternal nature of their bond, as despite their own respective heartaches they still have each other. The two converse in a touching tale of the true strength of friendship in the face of hardship.

Mizu no Kotoba

Mizu no Kotoba

In a cafe, people spend their time talking to each other about what’s on their mind. They talk about troubles with love, spread gossip about a friend of a friend and tell about the time they saw a flying fish. The waitress of the cafe tries to teach a lesson to a boy that just broke up with his girlfriend that relationships don’t end when the people involved part ways. Overall, the other people in the cafe also become influenced by what tools of humanity and the human language can do for relationships between lovers and friends.
