A must view for fans of Gainax, a smorgasbord of sci-fi references at a blink and you'll miss it pace set to the two opening tracks of ELO's "Time" album (Prologue and Twilight) with fantastic, dizzying animation. Easy to digest and holds up on repeat watches so you can spot your faves! The only downside is there is not exactly any high quality version out there and it won't win awards in the video department as a result, but maybe that adds to the charm. "I have a message from another time."

Daicon III Opening Animation is a work that has a handful of references to the world of science fiction. Perhaps its strong point is the fact that the animation was made with great effort by a group of amateurs who would later found Gainax, but its main attraction, (and the real reason why everyone turned to see it), was because the use of popular characters, especially for the Japanese public. Many people consider the work as a kind of tribute, but I think it was just a simple attempt to attract attention in an easy way. It is curious that, nowadays, there is a constant complaint about the excessive use of references, but when that same "resource" was used by an old work, no one intends to take it as something negative. They may use the card that "he was the first to do it", but that is just an excuse, since being the first, at least in this case, does not make him the most creative or the most original (on the contrary, it shows certain lack of originality). However, compared to current productions, and even after Daicon that sought to emulate it, this one was never shameless with its intention. It is interesting and important as historical material for Gainax, while individually, as a product, it is an entertaining, fast and easy to digest animation.
