Azumanga Daioh

Azumanga Daioh

Ten-year-old genius Chiyo, animal-loving Sakaki, loudmouth Tomo, athletic Kagura, weight-conscious Yomi and dim-witted Osaka are six friends who share laughs, good times, and a high school homeroom. With scary (and sometimes perverted) teachers, school festivals, penguin suits and general hilarity abounding, you can be sure that there's never a dull day in the life of one of these students!

Kafkonia Kafkonia says...

Both are wacky comedies set in high schools, complete with an oddball cast of characters. But while AzuDai focuses on girls, in Cromartie there isn't a girl to be seen (unless you count the episodes set in Cromartie Girls High School, which features the same characters but in pigtails and dresses.) Both series are crafted as a series of short vignettes assembled to make longer episodes -- in the case of Cromartie, only about 15 minutes per episode. This shorter length is a godsend, as Cromartie is, unbelievably, even more nonsensical than Azumanga Daioh.

MonkeyZerg MonkeyZerg says...

So you enjoyed the testosterone-fueled angry musings of the tough delinquents of Cro-High? Maybe you waited for an action-packed plot, but enjoyed the silly distractions? Maybe Cro-High has primed you for more random comedy set in high schools? If that's the case then it would be my pleasure to recommend Azumanga Daioh. It's short, sweet, has random comedy, and is carried by the quirks and charms of its characters. But be warned! Smiles, girls, and a creepy cat-man abound! After a heavy dose of serious Cro-High, you may get  hyperglycemic jumping straight into Azumangah Daioh.

Morwen Morwen says...

The casts of Cromartie and Azumanga couldn't seem more different, but both anime have a similar setting (a high school where things are less-than-normal) and are laugh out loud funny. In particular, if you love the surreal moments in Azu (like the dream sequences), you'll find Cromartie's more bizarre elements a hoot, and vice-versa.

freakzilla freakzilla says...

Azumanga Daioh isn't quite as random as Cromartie, but few are. In the end, they appeal to the same audience as they both provide a funny random anime. Azumanga has a bit more fanservice though.

LxTrix LxTrix says...

It's funny to watch characters being strange, and to watch the random moments the characters experience. Want more of those things after seeing Cromartie? Check out Azumanga Daioh.

neutrino neutrino says...

Plotless, wacky school antics your thing? Whether it's adventures of boys or girls, one of these two will fit your bill. Actually, it's kind of fun to compare the adventures of an all-boys cast to the adventures of an all-girls cast. So if you watch one, watch the other and let the fun ensue.

jurexplay jurexplay says...

Well, both anime have a lot of random humour. They are both extremely hilarious and fun to watch. AD is about girls only and CHS is about boys only that’s not much of similiarity but humour works in both shows. I’m convinced that if you liked AD you will like CHS.

ZetaThompson ZetaThompson says...

Both anime are High School taken to the ridiculous. All stereotypes are there. One is from a Female Pov and other from a male.

cassiesheepgirl cassiesheepgirl says...

While this may seem like a completely bizarre recommendation to make at first glance, these two series share a fundemental similarity - the humour. While one is about a group of delinquent boys and the other about cute schoolgirls, both series share the same sort of random comedy that is kind of addictive. If you liked the 'What the Hell' random style of one series, then try the other.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

Completely random and over-the-top craziness? Check! Group of High School students? Check! Only purpose of the show is to be getting laughs? CHECK! Really, the only difference between Cromatie and Azumanga, is that Cromatie takes place in a school for delinquents, and Azumanga apparently in a school for "cutesies".

godcix godcix says...

Hilarious with just the right amount of random, which by the way is plenty.  And oh yeah they both take place in school/classroom.  Just another day in the life anime with gorillas, robots, feral cute cats, and those indescribable things.  Whats not to love.

chii chii says...

School setting, random strange characters with lots of quirks, and hilarious. All of the above are present in both anime. The biggest differance is that Cromartie focuses only on males and Azumanga on females. I personally like Cromartie High School more than Azumanga Daioh because male humour generally works best on me but if you like your school life comedies check either title out if you liked the other.

Waswat Waswat says...

Cromartie and Azumanga Daioh are very much te same animes; both having a wacky way of story telling, both have Norio Wakamoto as one of the voice actors, both are episodic. Except that there is one difference, except for the characters being all male. In Cromartiethe anime actually makes fun of itself. The fact that in Cromartie the delinquents actually have lines that a girl in an anime usually would ("But it's so embarassing!") is one of the many nods towards similar anime.

Detroit Metal City

Detroit Metal City

Negishi Souichi always dreamed of joining a trendy pop band, so that he could perform music like that of his idol, Kahimi Karie. In order to realize his dream, he decided to leave the country side and his loving parents to study in Tokyo. And after graduating, he does manage to join a band... but not the kind he was expecting! As lead singer of the death metal band Detroit Metal City, under the stage name Krauser II, he is made to perform loud songs filled with obscene lyrics - a far cry from the songs he used to write in school. But despite the fact that Negishi hates DMC's music, the Krauser side of him will do anything to put on a good show for his fans... even if it means making Negishi's life a misery!

Both shows involve a nice guy trying to fit in , and share the same random and strange humor we all love.

AirCommodore AirCommodore says...

I usually don't like shows that are purely comedies, but I LOVE Detroit Metal City and Cromartie High School. The art styles, while they don't really look similar, feel similar, and the sense of humor is absurd and fairly dry. Both also are the prefect lenght. The episodes are short enough so that they never drag, and the series ends before the concept becomes tired.

brocko brocko says...

If you like the strange and wacky humour in one you'll definitely love the strange and wacky humour in the other. Both Cromartie High School and Detroit Metal City are reltatively plotless and instead rely on high GPM (gags per minute) to please their audiences.

mexasault mexasault says...

Both series are crude yet completly hilarious comedies. The protagonists of both series are nice quiet guys who somehow end up with groups that are completelly different than the quiet people they would like to be. In detroit metal city the people he meets and interacts with are metal heads, and in cromartie its deliquents. From this both series get thier funny situations. The comedy is based on the protagonists trying to deal with the people around them and the situations that arise from them. If you found one funny then I'm sure you'll really enjoy the other.

triplestrike triplestrike says...

Both of these are outrageously ridiculous and thoroughly wacky, prepare yourself. If you want something serious please go elseware.

Both shows contain this specific humor full of crudeness. If you're a fan of that type of comedy, then you'll love either one!

runecem runecem says...

They're both very funny and good anime.

One is more like a parody on real life while the other has more crude and obscene kind of humour though.

you should definately watch both!

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu

Sousuke Sagara is far from the average high school student - not only is he highly trained in military tactics, he puts his knowledge to use in every single applicable situation (and even those nonapplicable ones.) So, when confronted with high school, he tends to turn average high school experiences into off-the-wall adventures. Love letters become terrorist threats and field trips become commando operations; his survival depends on the watchful eye of his best friend and classmate, Kaname. Together, they may just make it out of high school alive...

If you are looking for true randomness and hilarity, look no further. Cromartie and Fumoffu are both quite amusing (though I definitely like Cromartie a bit more). Both break the mold of generic randomness and are very entertaining, and conveniently are both based around school.

phelkis phelkis says...

Cromartie High School is about a high school filled with badasses who do crazy things; FMP Fumoffu is about a high school with one badass who does very crazy things. Both will make you laugh, often!

freakzilla freakzilla says...

Fumoffu and Cromartie High are both anime that are completely random. Fumoffu is random because Sagara is so clueless about things, while Cromartie might be just plain weird to some. On top of that even the setting (high school) is the same!

Ajna Ajna says...

Just plenty of fun and nonsense for a quick watch you won't regret unless you were also looking for a more thorough and complex show.

Not much mental work, but lots and lots of laugh assured!

Morwen Morwen says...

Both of these series have pretty madcap comedy styles--Fumoffu! because of poor Sousuke being dropped into a situation he's completely unprepared for, and Cromartie because of the large number of wacky students present at the school. Both series also rely a lot on parody through their comedy. Cromartie focuses mostly on gritty action series or stories about deliquints, while FMP?F!'s parodies borrow from several different sources, but the overall tone is pretty similar. Plus, they're both just hilarious series. Definitely check out these two if you're wanting a comedy series to watch.

sysmibmip sysmibmip says...

FMP Fumoffu and Cro High share many similar elements. Both feature a protagonist who thinks and behaves differently from those around him. Everything is centered around the bizzare events/actions the protagonist and his friends encounter/do at school or at home. However, FMP Fumoffu is more often centered around Souske being too serious while Cro High mostly revolves around about the bizzare the people (or should I say characters) and situations around Kamiyama. Nevertheless, both anime derive its comdey from completely unpredictable randomness that will leave many viewers winded from laughter.

I've been waiting to find something like Cromartie - my favorite comedy anime till I found Sunred - and I'm happy to say I finally have.

Both of these titles are wacky, off the wall comedy series that don't fit the standard random comedy mold for anime. No Azumanga-style cuteness here - both are bizarre and slapstick at the same time (Sunred moreso than Cromartie on the slapstick factor).

If you liked one, you'll DEFINITELY like the other.

cassiesheepgirl cassiesheepgirl says...

You may be wondering what on earth could High School Delinquents and Superheroes have in common. The answer is simple: both are cause for absolute hilarity. If you enjoyed the random comedy of either Tentai Senshi Sunred or Cromartie High School, then I highly suggest checking out the other.

Haré+Guu

Haré+Guu

Haré and his mother live peacefully in the jungle, until one day the boy is overtaken by a omnipotent shadow. Later, he awakens to find Guu, a strange girl with even stranger abilities - notably, the ability to switch from a cute, lovable Guu, to a menacing delinquent who eats everything. phelkis phelkis says...

If you like wacky humor where very weird things happen and rarely does much make sense, then chances are you'll like both Cromartie High School, and Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu. Both series take place in a wacky world where if you try to think too much about things (like why that guy's hair keeps moving when there's no wind, why there's a gorilla attending your school, or how Guu does any of the crazy things she does) your head might explode!

freakzilla freakzilla says...

If you like completely wacky and random things, this is another title you need to check out! Guu and Cromartie High School neglect a story and just put in whatever they feel like, make it work, and create a funny masterpiece.

leerkopf leerkopf says...

Both Cromartie and Hare+Guu are humor-based. Both have a common style of random abrupt humor. Although in Hare+Guu the story is more refined, they both resort to conditional humor and abrupt scene changes, with the main characters doing stupidly odd things.

Morwen Morwen says...

Both of these series have really similar humor styles. Take a (relatively) normal guy, throw them into a surreal circumstance with zany characters, and watch the chaos. The two mains, Takashi and Haré, have pretty different reactions--Takashi takes everything in stride and makes the best of it, while Haré is much more prone to panic and losing his temper--but the bizarre, random feel of the humor of the shows still match each other well.

Excel Saga

Excel Saga

F City, F Prefecture: the battleground where good and evil have finally chosen to decide once and for all who will rule the world…or at least that's the general idea! Neither side seems up for the task, as surviving the brutality of everyday life is enough of a chore. On the side of evil is the organization of Across, its only member the loudmouthed and abrasive Excel who struggles just to put food in her stomach; on the side of good, three disenfranchised, unemployed bachelors whose only pursuit in life is romance. Both shows revolve around the life of a school student constantly at school. School rumble is longer and tries harder to put story behind their episodes which is necessary to some point because there are so many episodes. Cromartie is more focused on outragious comedy and will achieve it at all costs.

Thrawn Thrawn says...

A delinquent is at the helm in a ship driven by oddball comedy, unorthodox situations and in Cromarite especially, hilarious conversations. Whiel the characters bounce off each other for jokes and a few gags, both have their roots in comedy and in School Rumble's case, a bit of romance. The randomness helps bring them together and both have excellent dubs.

The episodes are made up of seperate jokes and subjects in both these animes, although I think cromartie high school has a joke/subject per episode. Both series are about students. Both series have some philosophical topics such as taking pride in being manly or what it means to be a real friend and joke about such topics by taking actions at extreme lengths to demonstrate their dedication. Both make use of humor in surreal situations but the situations are common in everyday life.

Cromartie and Ishida both follow teenaged boys in their random school life antics, and are fairly slapstick to boot. The difference is that Cromartie is 5,000 times better in all ways and is actually funny, but there's no denying that the two are similar. Try the other out for size, especially if you just watched Ishida and want something better.

Thrawn Thrawn says...

Delinquent (-ish for Ishida to Asakura) characters getting into random, often pointless events. Cromartie is the superior of the two but both can be fun if you're in the right mindset for either one. Abnormal characters and a school life setting where school doesn't play much of a role round them off.
