School uniform-wearing girls in a post apocalyptic world. Both have pretty artwork. The similarities don't stop there, but note that Coppelion seems a bit darker than Arata-naru Sekai.

snivets snivets says...

Despite some differences in tone, both Arata-naru Sekai and Coppelion are essentially about schoolgirls exploring a post-apocalyptic world. If you liked one, you'd probably also enjoy the other.

ChalamiuS ChalamiuS says...

Both of these series send school girls exploring in a post-apocalyptic world. Main difference being that Coppelion doesn't involve time travel and that Arata-naru Sekai is a short series (1 episode OVA) and Coppelion is a full length series.

Both shows feature high-School girls being sent to explore an apocalyptic world. Even if the length is different in each show and Coppelion doesn't involve time travel, fans of one will enjoy the other.

Karasune Karasune says...

Coppelion and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 both deal with very tragic and severe disasters. Throughout the story, we see characters struggling to deal with the aftermath and trying to stay alive all while helping others that are in need. Coppelion is pure science-fiction while TM8.0 offers a quite realistic scenario of a natural phenomenon in our very own world, but if you're interested in this type of setting, you won't want to miss these.

snivets snivets says...

Both Coppelion and TM8.0 are about large scale disasters and the logistics of the aftermath. Both stories revolve around people struggling to relate to each other, protect each other, and live together post-disaster. If you liked either, definitely check out the other.

ZetsubouKaiji ZetsubouKaiji says...

These are both anime that feature cute teenage girl protagonists trying to survive and help others survive in a world that has been ravaged by disaster.

In Tokyo Magnitude the disaster is ongoing and focuses more on the protagonists survival, in Coppelion the disaster is over and focuses on the protagonists' efforts to pick up the pieces. However, both shows also have a strong element of drama involving the people the main characters meet along the way. Both anime have a tendenacy to dip into the melodramatic as well.

Tokyo Magnitude is the superior anime. It handles it drama and character development in a more emotionally satisfying and realistic way. Coppelion leans toward being more cheesy with the characters being a lot more one dimensional.

While both anime do focus more on the drama, they also both devle into the arena of diaster porn. If you want to see major cities destroyed or being destroyed in giant waves then both these anime fit the bill.

Genetically altered young girls are put into dangerous situations that forces them to mature quickly. The plots of the anime are quite different, but the characters make these shows a good match for each other.

Gunslinger Girl is much more serious with less comedy moments, but both shows have an atmosphere of despair.

The themes are sort of the same that a huge accident accured and a group of teenagers with "powers" are sent to save people. Coppelion definately(did I spell that right? >_<) has a lot oof action, and so does Owari No Seraph. And both are way too short! XD

The main characters are a group of people with speacial traits, that allow them to move around the ruins of Tokyo without getting killed/dying.The sight of a postapocalytic Tokyo is nicely depicted in both.

ZetsubouKaiji ZetsubouKaiji says...

These are both post apocalyptic series that focus more on drama and character development than plot. Both these shows try to develop their characters through their experiences in worlds that have been destroyed and are in the process of rebuilding.

Coppelion is about three teenage girls with super powers whereas No. 6 is about a pair of guys that fall in love during their time together.

No. 6 is better with character development, drama, world building and just about everything else, except animation. It also has really nice and believable romantic development between the two male leads.  The only problem with No. 6 is it's horrible ending.

Coppelion on the other hand is melodramtic with lots of misplaced comedy and dramatically convenient events happening all the time. Also, while the animation at the start of the anime is pretty decent, it steadily drops in quality throughout the series.

However, if your looking for post apocalyptic drama about the rebuilding and restructring of society then both these titles fit the bill.

Sunday Without God

Sunday Without God

However the tranquility is shattered when Ai returns from digging graves to find that everyone in town has been slaughtered, and the culprit is a young man going by the same name as her long-lost father: Hampnie Hambart. Forced to lay to rest everyone she's ever known, Ai must now forge her own path into the unfamiliar world in search of answers.

ZetsubouKaiji ZetsubouKaiji says...

Both these anime are about cute girls trying to save a post apocalyptic world by slowly restoring order. Both these anime preach about redemption and resisting the temptation to give into despair.

Coppelion has more of a sci-fi setting, feautres a lot more action and uses technobable to explain it's more fantastical elements. Whereas Sunday Without God has a fantasy setting with slower pacing and includes magic. However, despite these differences the anime share the same tone and put on emphasis on the relationships between the characters.

Both these anime also have a tendency to get very preachy with the messages they are trying to get across. Despite the post apocalyptic settings both anime keep an artificial upbeat cheerful tone of hope rather than despair that you would expect in this kind of setting. Both shows also include a lot of humor.

Finally both of these show start off with rather pretty animation that slowly degrades as the series continue on.

If you're looking for cute girls trying to change the world with a positive message then try these titles.

86: Eighty-Six

86: Eighty-Six

The Republic of San Magnolia has long been under attack from the neighboring Giadian Empire's army of unmanned drones known as the Legion. After years of painstaking research, the Republic finally developed autonomous drones of their own, turning the one-sided struggle into a war without casualties-or at least, that's what the government claims. In truth, there is no such thing as a bloodless war. Beyond the fortified walls protecting the eighty-five Republic territories lies the "nonexistent" Eighty-Sixth Sector. The young men and women of this forsaken land are branded the Eighty-Six and, stripped of their humanity, pilot the "unmanned" weapons into battle...

Nocturnalgloria Nocturnalgloria says...

Coppelion and 86 are surprisingly similar, despite the fact that the first does not quite reach the level of heart-wrenching suffering that the second does. But in both there is deep discrimination regarding a group who is deemed entirely disposable, be it the Coppelion or the 86s. They are forced to fight against what amounts to ghosts of a vaniqueshed past, so a lot of the imagery is the same: haunting ruins of cities reclaimed by nature and a very gritty, broken down approach to the mechas. This is a far cry from the usual shiny and mystrical mechas that amount in anime.

The notion that some people should just die for the sake of keeping others safe- the same others who sacrifice them without as much as batting an eyelash- is more central to 86 but it is present in Coppelion as well.
