To start off, as the tags suggest, this movie is romance. It is also the sequel so don’t watch it first. The movie beautifully wraps up the storyline in an elegant lovey dovey way. If you don’t like clichès though don’t watch this movie. There are many scattered throughout including at the end—before the credits roll. There is also about a minute post credits.

From the signing of their contract, the relationship between the tyrant eye and dark flame master was not normal. They made it unique and their own not caring what others thought. This movie continued to show the uniqueness in all its glory. It not only showed the uniqueness of the couple but all of the other characters as well. That is what this anime does: it makes each character unique with their own special quarks and one big one that draws them all together. The arguing still continues between the two who always argue, for example, as they work together to “capture” the couple. Very few anime’s have such defined characters with  unique differences that draw them together such as chuunibiyo syndrome. For tyrant eye it also showed her struggle as a senior if she should continue or become just Rikka and if she would be accepted if she changes. Yuuta also has to accept her for who she is and embrace the past he tried hard to forget.

For the story, I love how they made a whole story out of not wanted to be separated. They went on a trip around the country. It made me think of a date or honeymoon. They even slept next to each other though in different beds. The whole “chase” was perfect for the series, but I would have hoped that tthere would be more making up between deki and tyrant eye. Speaking of her, I would want to see what the school is like it’s the new student council in office. The story was self contained yet built on all that transpired beforehand at the same time.

The animation showed so many different places in Japan and was able to show how they are all different and the qualities of each. It also showed the characters in normal attire and has their chuubiyno switch ins. My favorite though was the cool plane! They even got a close up of its landing gear retracting and take off. It looked like there was a party going on inside. I also though the weapon scene was funny. I know in US if you said in an airport that you had a weapon, it would be a lot worse than what actually happened. Atop he airport, the character details could still be made out even with giant plane vs “trash” small people.

For the sound, I am docking 0.01 points for one specific thing During the scene on the boat they were using the word 大好き (lit. Big like) instead of 愛/愛して. Due to the nature of the scene and the special moment, I would have liked the latter to really show the commitment of true love although it is still just a small thing. The sound also gets huh marks because I love the phrases they use to enter combat and their names and powers and contracts. Also I hope the clone really does have such a grandiose name.

As a final remark, though unlikely, I hope they continue and show their life together through marriage and starting a family and being on their own/in college kind of like Clannad After Story.5

Romance seems to have been driving my anime picks lately.  Not that long ago I finished Golden Time, the review of that anime around here somewhere.  I’m within a few episodes of completing Toradora, review coming.  But now, I ran across the sequel movie of those crazy pair of kind of maybe lovebirds, Yuuta and Rikka, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions: Take On Me.  Voila  … review!

The movie takes place in the beginning of Rikka and Yuuta's third year, senpai Kumin on the cusp of college life, once her napping is done.  Those prevalent hopes of Rikka's chuni disappearing in high school years as it has for Shinka who's abandoned it in hopes of a less embarrassing high school career, and Yuuta, who has his Dark Flame Master under control … for Rikka, it’s just not happening.  The Wicked Lord Shignan still cries havoc and lets slip the dogs of mystic war.  In the meantime, Rikka’s BFF and groveling chunibyo slave Sanae has joined Shinka's dream and has sought position in the student council ... as Shinka's boss.  And so, Rikka has maintained the course due to Sanae and new student Satone Shichimiya,  but a Rikka who has preserved her chunibyo is distressing to Rikka’s family.  Now coming to a crisis point, sister Toka has the solution ... take Rikka and her mother to Italy and away from all the chunibyo crazies in her life.

The girls of the Far Eastern Mystic/Napping Society have the counter-plan:  Yuuta and Rikka should run off and elope!  Toka isn't going to negotiate.  She has the means to blackmail Pres. Sanae and VP Shinka to bring the lovers in.  There is a delicious irony in seeing these two antagonists offer the great chase throughout Japan.  Toka is resourceful, but Yuuta figures out how Toka is tracking them and throws the quarrelsome hounds off the scent.  But funds are running low, and Yuuta decides the best place is to go to Rikka's mom in Hokkaido, presenting Rikka with a ring to show his devotion to her.  Rikka accepts the ring with misgiving, and for good reason.

This leads to the great discovery of an internal conflict within Rikka involving the two Delusions, Love vs. Chunibyo.  Rikka is convinced that if she falls in love, her chuni will be lost ... along with the Dark Flame Master.  It was Yuuta who first inspired the Wicked Lord Shignan.  But this was Rikka's mother's hope, that under Yuuta's influence, Rikka will 'grow up' past her delusions.  This is the crisis in Rikka: falling in love means losing Yuuta, for chunibyo preserves the Dark Flame Master.  It is for Yuuta to come to her rescue, to convince her that chuni and love can co-exist.

Which is a shame.  Rikka looks much more lovely without that crummy eye-patch, much in the same way Sanae looks much better without those Rapunzel pig-tails.  But ... and this is big ... it is for no one but Rikka to make that decision.  There is some measure of hope in the last scene, when chuni Rikka clambers down the rope to Yuuta's room to offer him the opportunity to look at her 'eye.'

Of course, the animation is all about those chuni encounters of the best kind, mystic battles between Rikka and Sanae, the ecstatic meeting of Rikka and Yuuta in a wonder-realm, huge hammers and daggers flailing about in streams of bright blasts of color and altered perspectives.  Great artistic anime projections of unfettered imagination.  This has been the strength of LC&OD.  The music, however, including the theme song ‘Take On Me’ (occurring at midpoint in the movie) push all the romantic buttons with an inefficiency that disappoints.

I was afraid that watching the initial series (2012) and this movie (2018) would cause some problems with too much missing plot.  Sure, there were some new situations, new characters (one old character, the girl-crazy Mokoto was in as cameo and cat-sitting, the best irony of the movie), but blanks were easy to fill in since we are dealing with the chuni-state of Rikka and how it can be saved from the onslaught of maturity.  Can this condition which one should easily out-grow hold with the ever-resolute Wicked Lord Shignan?  One may wonder how.

This was the best possible outcome of season 2! Kyoani once again surpassed it's limits and made another wonderful movie! The conclusion was really satisfying and I hope we see a season 3!
