Rar Rar says...

Chrono Trigger and Dragon Half both indulge in poking gentle fun at fantasy conventions, and go for colourful characters over complex plots. If you're after light entertainment without having to think, both should suffice.

OneiChan OneiChan says...

I think if you liked Chrono Trigger you would find enjoyment in Dragon Half as well because even though the plots are very different they share several key elements. These are both light-hearted comedies that you don't have to be serious or thoughtful to watch. They are both short so they are good for a quick laugh. Watch these as a 'pick me up' on a boring day.

Di Gi Charat

Di Gi Charat

One day, Dejiko, Puchiko and the strange ball-shaped Gema-Gema crash land their UFO in the middle of Akihabara. Without a single yen to their name they have nowhere to go, but following an unexpected and generous offer from the manager of a nearby store, the trio begin working at the shop in exchange for renting the room upstairs. Alongside Dejiko’s self-confessed rival Rabi-en-Rose, as well as a mysterious bear that has mastered the ability to appear happy, sad, depressed and angry all at once, the insanity is only just beginning! From shooting window shoppers with Dejiko’s Laser Eye Beam and the appearance of a bizarre farting impostor, to a sudden attack on the city by Godzilla, life at Gamers is certainly livening up.

Both Chrono Trigger and Di Gi Charat are graced with a peculiar, light-hearted sense of humour, as well as colourful, strange and bright characters and scenes. Chrono Trigger, though, is a bit more cheerful than Di Gi Charat, which is only really cute and cheerful on the surface. Irregardless, if you liked one, I'm sure the other could be worth your time.

JAhU JAhU says...

It may not sound original, but Di Gi Charat and Chrono Trigger OVA have a very similar style of humour and also both of them are too short. Even if for some reason you won't like this show, you won't waste too much time on it, so it won't hurt to give it a try.

Hitohira

Hitohira

Asai Mugi's everyday life is very much impacted by a singular problem: she suffers from extreme shyness. Her sole friend Touyama Kayo would like to help her out as they've just entered high school, but Mugi's shyness is the sort that steals her voice entirely. It is too bad for Mugi that a freak shout on her part attracted the attention of Nono Ichinose. Nono is on a mission to save her Drama Research Society, and she isn't prepared to accept shyness as excuse from on-stage performances! With a small group of close friends to encourage and educate her, Mugi will be given a chance to be more than she is now. But, can someone so terribly shy really become a stage actress in just a few short months?

If you watched Chrono Trigger OVA, then it means that you probably played the game and remember its music. Although the OP and ED in Hitohira don't have very good songs, you might find interesting the fact that the BGM in this show sounds like it was inspired on Mitsuda's and Uematsu's work (you can hear it from the very beginning of the first episode). If liked their music, you should give Hitohira a try.

If you are looking for a better RPG-based extravaganza, check out Ragnarok. Where the Chrono Trigger OVA fails, it succeeds, with plenty of cute monsters and fun times.

Maple Story

Maple Story

Ten years ago, Victoria Island's protector of peace and order, the World Tree, was destroyed, and humans were given the blame. Because of the tree's destruction, each of the five races - warriors, archers, magicians, thieves, and humans - moved to Maple Island, and have been enemies with each other ever since. Al is a young human who wants nothing more than to train and become stronger, and to do so, he disguises himself as a non-human to interact with the other races and learn their trades. Along with the snobbish magician Nina, Al will continue his training and search for adventures along the way; but one question remains: why are the evil Zakuns, as well as the other races, trying to find the seeds of the World Tree which were scattered across the land?

If you watched the Chrono Trigger OVA hoping for something to fill the void of beating the game and felt disappointed, you might enjoy the RPG goodness of Maple Story. It's far superior in every way, has more cute monsters, and a better RPG feel. Check it out!

FLCL

Naota Nanbada is a boring young boy who leads a boring life in a boring town. His older brother has left for America, and the closest he comes to any excitement is when his deadbeat dad has too much sake. But things change one day when a bizarre girl zooms up to him on a scooter and smacks him in the face with her guitar. What's more, once Naoto returns home he discovers that this strange woman has arrived ahead of him and moved in! Not only does she constantly engage in perverted activities with Naota's father and flirt with the young man himself, but she also claims to be an alien who is searching for the ‘Pirate King.' Now, Naota must learn to live with this new intruder, deal with an odd government agent who sports exceptionally large eyebrows and the mysterious Medical Mechanica, and come to terms with the fact that there are a variety of robots and weapons emerging out of his head - amongst other things. Perhaps boring wasn't so bad after all...

Chrono Trigger and Furi Kuri are crazily funny. One involves crazy girls on vespas and one involves crazy video game characters making mischief. Since they are both short, you can watch them very easily. If you liked one of them, watch the other.

Chrono Trigger and Dead Leaves have many things in common. One thing is that they are funny in a crazy way. Another thing is that they are both very short. If you have a small amount of time on your hands and you like comedy, you should see them both.
