Cat Soup - Reviews

Not sure how to rate this (tried giving it a "?" for a score, but the site wouldn't let me). Oddly compelling work. Reminded me of so many things (Dali, What Dreams May Come with cats, Tim Burton, David Lynch, Doom Generation, the -qatsi films by Godfrey Reggio with Philip Glass music), but still maintaned a sense of originality. Often beautiful backgrounds, strange companions and bizarre people met along the way, and so much quirkiness. I found myself often laughing and even more often confused. Plan to watch it again, and maybe even share it with some people. Just an odd little thing I could come to love, or at least admire. Definitely not for everyone.

Want to know how evolution works? Have you ever thought about what you eat? How about a mindboggling mix of Biblical and other myths from around the world? A bit of time turning, sledging, circus and various creatures maybe? Food and where it goes last of all. Surviving and hallucinating in a desert. How does life start anyway? And how does it end? How does the world end? Loneliness and sibling love? Unattentive parents and TVdinner culture. Diseases and travelling. Someone to sew back your arm in case it happenes to come off? Hitting someone on the head and then feeding yourself with the bump? Kinks, whales and how does thunder come to be along with other laws of physics...

I don't think the list above includes half of the themes stuffed into this brilliant 30minute piece. I wish I knew more about the world so I could get more of the hints but what can you do...

The animation is not in my favourite style, sound effects are quite random and there is not a single thing explained during the entire storyline, which by the way makes also little sense. Neither does anybody speak or have any facial expressions.

Music: 5 – nothing really stood out
Characters: 7 – from animals to gimps to godknowswhat
Story: 9 – as cruel as it is heartwarming
Experience: 10 – impossible to forget

This is truely a work of art. It is so diferent and will leave you thinking. you will either love it or just beacuse how strange it really is. The art is great and the story is like nothing else. Its the kind of anime that will make you make the story for it. Amazing! :D

Chugging along to my next community review for Anime-Planet and coming in at number 17. This train is not stopping anytime soon – at all. In this review, I am taking a look at the episode long OVA called Cat Soup. No spoilers or cursing, as usual. Check out my other reviews. I welcome comments and criticism or reviews of my review. Thanks for reading and on with the review of this abstract and strange anime!

Story; I believe that the moral and story of Cat Soup is just how far would you go for someone you loved? In Cat Soup, it is simple; you run after death and go to the ends of the Earth. You do not care what it takes or what the consequences are. You just do it because you love that person. Cat Soup is an excellent character study. There are several words that best describe Cat Soup and they are quirky, demented, deranged and colorful.

Animation; The animation of this OVA is unique, quirky and very well done. As there were no voices in this anime, it was up to the animation to give us the story convincingly and without fail. It accomplished this in spades. J.C. Staff should be truly pleased with what they have produced here because it’s a timeless classic of demented and deranged beauty. I am surprised that it is not more of a classic on the rest of the internet. 

Sound; Much like the OVA itself, the music is quirky and both sets and fits the mood and tones. It’s an unique soundtrack and probably one of the most colorful in way. One could say the music is seriously demented and deranged. This is true in every way, shape and form. There is no “real” voice acting in Cat Soup, so I cannot factor that into my grade. You aren’t losing out without voice acting at all, in fact I think silent films in general are masterpieces in their own right. Do not miss it because of that.

Characters; Cat Soup is all about the characters. When it boils down to it, its a character study. It brings up many moralist questions about life and death in general. You cannot help but root for these kittens as they travel, fight and go through so many trials and tribulations so they can be reunited once more. It is a beautifully deranged story and timeless tale of sibling love. It is a great watch for those with siblings or hopeful if they are old enough to accept or handle the issues and imagery in Cat Soup.

Overall; Cat Soup will not be for everyone. Do not get me wrong. It’s a great OVA but some of the morals and trials these kittens go through may insult or differ with your religious viewpoints. It is just entertainment, but I’ve read many complaints suggesting its offensive. It is really not, unless you are a religious nut or have been raised by one. It’s a haunting, deranged and demented little short. You would really miss out by missing this one. My praise simply cannot be stopped about this short OVA.

I might be missing something very important in the story, but I didn't find this entertaining at all. I don't see how it was "dark." Throughout the show, I was confused as to what was going on, and that made me very bored. Maybe if I watch it a second time, I'll understand more, but this time through I was at a complete loss.
