This rec would work better with the Fruits Basket manga, but this will have to do.

Bungaku Shoujo reminded me of a Fruits Basket that had been stripped of all the romantic-comedy bits, and left with the emotionally raw parts, especially the scenes with Akito.

Beyond the Clouds and Bungaku Shoujo have remarkably similar atmosphere. Both are slow-paced, melancholy sort-of romances with pretty visuals.

Both of these movies are about writing and the problems that accompany the art. Although, Bungaku is more dramatic, they really are slice of life stories about coming of age and following your dreams. In each, too, they show a development of a relationship in which one partner may have to  leave, but will influenced the other in a significant way that will never end.

ef: A Tale of Memories.

ef: A Tale of Memories.

In a high school setting, there are many people whose stories must be told: Hiro, an aspiring manga artist whose view of the world is "missing a certain color," according to himself; his childhood friend Kei, who is vying for his attention; Kyosuke, a photographer and cameraman who seeks to capture true emotion in his work; the ever-cheerful Miyako, who meets Hiro by chance and immediately becomes attached to him; the gentle Renji, unsure of his aspirations to become a novelist; and Kei's mysterious and quiet sister Chihiro, who seems to be a different person every day. As time passes and they interact with one another more, their paths increasingly intertwine as shades of regrettable pasts emerge.

These are slice of life stories about following your dreams and battling the mental barriers that are in the way. Writing is a theme of both. They also show complex relationships and how artists have to make difficult choices.

AirCommodore AirCommodore says...

Natsume Yuujinchou and Bungaku Shoujo are, I believe, the only two shoujo series I've seen with a male protagonist. The plot of both may be a bit on the skimpy side, compared to some other titles, but no expense is spared in characterization and builing each's moody atmosphere. Animation is a tad similar, as well, though Bungaku Shoujo has a noticeably larger budget.

Koi Kaze and Bungaku Shoujo are drama/romance series with special emphasis on drama (and sometimes melodrama). Both favor pastels and a slow pace.

I strongly recommend that you watch Night on the Galactic Railroad before you watch Bungaku Shoujo. The characters in Bungaku Shoujo are huge fans of Kenji Miyazawa, and make tons of references to his stories (with Night on the Galactic Railroad being their favorite and thus most-referenced).

Although both DTNK(denpa teki na kanojo) & BS(bungaku shojo) are of totally different plots & genre they are similar in their somewhat dark romantic feel. The female leads were initally looked as weird characters but as soon as story flows both of them makes the veiwers become attached to their roles. if you are like one then you will surely like the other. ^_^

5 Centimeters per Second

5 Centimeters per Second

Although today Tono Takaki and Shinohara Akari live far apart due to a family move shortly after elementary school, they were once two shy young students brought together by their shared differences from their peers. It is because of this that the two built a bond of closeness between them that still survives through their continued correspondence, even over such a distance. Secretly they both fear the loss of this bond over time, and for this reason they arrange a meeting between just the two of them. The journeys both of them take in their minds and in their lives create an atmosphere of intense emotional upheaval, but also a sense of peace. It is a twist of fate and a series of decisions that put the two in place to carry what they choose of their pasts into the future they will create for themselves.
