Boruto: Naruto the Movie - Reviews

Boruto the first movie, is a sequel to Naruto the Last movie, where the milking of the franchise keeps going by simply repeating the same crap all over again. Although Kishimoto was given the chance to start fresh with new characters and new storylines, all he did was making the children have the exact same personalities as their parents, and the plot being a repeat of everything that happened thus far. Despite trying to make it seem things are different, Boruto is still going through the exact same events Naruto did.

The saddest part is that despite the rehash, the movie still has a much more likable get up. Boruto is not a typical shonen protagonist, in the sense he is not an orphan hated by everyone, has super amazing hidden powers inside him, while also being the chosen one. Despite going through the exact same events as his father, he is a much more normal character, living in a much less emo world that is not constantly victimizing children. Unless you had a really messed up childhood, this was making everything much easier to relate with.

Remember when Naruto stole the secret scroll in the first episode and never got punished for such a major crime? Well, Boruto does something similar; he cheats in the Chuunin exam by using technology instead of his own powers. He is exposed in front of everyone by his own father. He is not a victimized orphan driven over the edge, so he can’t use that excuse. This right here could have been the point where we get a good story about the protagonist dealing with the consequences of his mistakes. The last part of the movie could have been about him facing rejection and disappointment from everyone, which would have taught him a lot of important life lessons.

But instead of that, we get the obligatory villain of the movie attacking and everything goes back to the same old done to death fighting shonen bullshit we’ve been getting for the past 15 years. Boruto doesn’t need to face consequences because the villain is conveniently someone who also became strong by using other peoples’ power instead of his own. Meaning, the conflict is no longer psychological because it got externalized and can simply be solved by punching the crap out of it.

I know this is a movie for children so it makes sense that it would never try to handle its conflicts in a mature manner. But the get-up was so good and the villain attacked the moment the hero was about to be blamed, thus it’s essentially Kishimoto showing the viewer his middle finger. Kishi, you don’t present me with a juicy steak and then you take it away; you had us expecting a juicy steak and not the same old horseshit. You ruined the conflict by having a one dimensional villain who wants to kill everyone and take over the world.

The last third of the movie is just a retarded battle shonen with powers working in any way the plot demands for them to work. Boruto instantly switches from a pariah whose father is disappointed of him, to the hero who saves the day and even gets to rescue his father with the power of plot convenience. I mean, holy crap, why did the four kage, the most powerful people in the world, accept to take Boruto, of all people, on the rescue mission? Without cheating he can barely do basic attacks. Why don’t they take Sakura or Hinata with them, who are a hundred times more powerful? Oh, I know why, because if you are a female character in a shonen story, the moment you are married is the moment you become a worthless housewife.

Jesus Christ, it’s like everything that happens in these movies is a lazy excuse for children to feel privileged even when they don’t deserve it. And even then, it’s still bullshit in this one because for the most part it is Naruto and Sasuke doing all the work as they always did. The movie is called Boruto, and the only thing he contributed was to hit the villain in the face with an obligatory rasengan he got from Naruto. Are you freaking kidding me?

Kishimoto clearly can’t write anything new anymore and this awful movie is proof of that. It exists only as a cashgrab that rehashes the exact same events and makes them worse than they already were. Let it die already.

I saw this movie with a few of my friends and For more information about Boruto https://www.youtube.com/DarkXHunter. It was worth the $17 tickets to see the movie (including fees) according to plenty of people that attended the movie.

Story - I do not wish to spoil tookl much of the movie but for those that already read through the manga and saw "The Last - Naruto the Movie", Naruto Uzumaki, the troublemaking Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, has become the Hidden Leaf Village's Seventh Hokage and the Village is living out a life of peace (probably 15 years after the 4th Great Ninja War) without worry of another war with his wife, Hinata Hyuga and their two kids, Boruto Uzumaki and Himawari Uzumaki. The story revolves around Boruto Uzumaki, who doesn't really care for the Hokage because of the duties of the position take his father away from the family and feels that he and his family are not getting the attention they deserve. The story starts off by showing off some good action scenes as well as introducing the main antagonists of the movie and afterwards the story does a great job of outlining the personalities of all the other kids of the story (despite some having fewer screen times than others). Without spoiling too much of the movie, the point of the story is the fact that the main antagonist of the story and his actions play similarly to how Boruto acts in the movie and has to learn a life lesson about patience, endurance and the importance of being a Shinobi and it can actually relate to basically every person that wants to do things the easy way and knowing that the easy way is not always the better way to go about life.

Animation - The animation in this movie is very well done, just better than "The Last" due to the fact that there is less melodrama and romantic themes from The Last that gets drowned out and tries to resurface with the action sparsingly in that movie. In "Boruto" the animation does not get the short stick with plenty of action throughout the movie, whenever the big action scenes came on screen everyone in the theater would cheer (myself included). All in all, the staff at Studio Pierrot did a fantastic job setting up for what may/will be the final Naruto movie.

Characters - As I mentioned in the story piece, some of the characters' personalities get shown more than they did in the manga (since there were only 11 other chapters that revolved around the kids). Other than that, it is interesting that for the two canon movies in the franchises the antagonists are related (by clan name) to the Sage of Six Paths and try to tie up the loose ends regarding the ulterior motive behind the main progeniter of chakra, Kaguya. As for the other characters, Sarada (the daughter of Sasuke and Sakura) wishes to become Hokage and is on the same team as Boruto... by the end of the movie one can say there should more follow up between her and Boruto in the future but that can left to one's own fanfiction. There are plenty other characters I can talk about but can't without risk of spoiling the movie. But the one thing I can say is the kids (no matter what fandom) always seem like they'll get more powerful than the parents.Nice

Overall - Even though there are only a few showings left of the movie in the states (as of this writing) for those that have not yet seen the movie, I would highly recommend you not miss this movie. Even if you have not seen "The Last" or read through the manga, you will definitely enjoy the journey that Boruto goes on with following his ninja way. If you wish to wait for the Blu-Ray/DVD for the movie, be prepared to wait till at least June 2016 for the DVD set to be released in the US (if it follows the same time frame that The Last came to DVD which was 8 months after the first screenings in the US).

Today, on October 10, 2015, was day two of New York City Comic Con (NYCC) but is also Naruto's birthday.  At NYCC, it was celebrated with the US premiere of the movie.  And in that screening was also marked by a special appearance of Masashi Kishimoto, the creater of the series, and Junko Takeuchi, the voice actress of Naruto.  After waiting hours to get in, we all were treated to one spectacular film.

Story

The story takes place after the original series and focuses on Naruto's son, Boruto.  Naruto is now the full fledged Hokage barely having time to be at home.  This greatly annoys Boruto who just wants his father's attention for once.  The story follows Boruto's journey trying to win his father's attention during the Chuunin exams.

The story was well planned out.  It may seem like a mismash of many different story ideas but they don't overtake one another and they blend in very well.  With the premise of a child just desparate for his father's attention there were many moments that really made the audience sigh in sadness.  Surprisingly, they had a great amount of comedy with some very funny and sassy dialogue with Sasuke, which totally caught me off guard.  Sasuke was the embodiment of teenage angst yet was the queen of sass in the movie.  Speaking of sass, his daughter and Boruto's teammate, Sarada, had one of the funniest lines of the whole movie.  It went something like, "I wanna be Hokage so I'm going to do the exact opposite of what my father did."  That had the crowd dying of laughter.  For fun, there was another great post-credit scene that answered a very fun question near the beginning of the movie.

Animation

They really pulled out all the stops for this movie.  Everything was crisp and clean.  The animation was just a feast for the eyes with the smoothness of the motions.  It was like what you see in the anime but 100x better and cleaner.  Speaking of which, I noticed that the colors were also brighter than the usual.

Sound

When it comes to music, what really stood out to me was the amazing ending song.  Sadly, I was not able to get the title for it.  For voice acting, Boruto sounded just like Naruto which also brings in the cute factor.  However, I just loved how kawaii Sarada sounded.

Characters

Although Boruto is Naruto's son, they somewhat added some Sasuke in their with the angst and attitude.  Boruto's character is the typical child seeking his parent's attention and approval and you just feel bad for him with tall the sad situations that happen during the movie.  However there were times where you just feel that he done goof'd but realized that he's just a child in a sad situation.  The movie also really delves into Naruto's role as a father conflicting with his role as a parent to two children.  The one great surprises, as I said earlier, was Sass Master Sasuke which I and everyone else enjoyed.

Overall

Obviously this movie already has a target audience of Naruto fans as it provides closure after the serie's emotional ending.  If you like Naruto, then you MUST see this movie.  All the hype is definitely warranted.
