Reasons you might like Cowboy Bebop...

VivisQueen VivisQueen says...

Mercenaries. That's the biggest connection between these two anime, although certainly not the only important one. Both go for a gritty feel, although Bebop is more style-gritty and Black Lagoon dirt-gritty. Bebop is a sci-fi, whereas the other is an action series set in today's world. However, Black Lagoon has enough shiny toys to satisfy even a Trekkie. More importantly, Bebop and Black Lagoon share a mature approach to violence, characterisation and plot. They also brilliantly combine an episodic pace with intricate character development; the small details reveal big things about the people involved. Both also use a slightly gimmicky supporting cast to bring in a hint of quirkiness and humour e.g. the Maid in BL and the fat assassin in Bebop. If you're basically looking for more of what one of these offers, you can't go wrong with the other.

bedake bedake says...

Girls, guns, and action! This series has it all. Cowboy Bebop follows the adventures in the lives of a group of space bounty hunters while retaining the same serious touch to the series that is present in Black Lagoon, while also adding quite a bit more humour.

Quickben Quickben says...

Both Black Lagoon and Cowboy Bebop are both about a group of mercenaries (or bounty hunters if you prefer).  The groups have a lot in common such a tendency to pick up stray dogs (Black Lagoon's doggie is named Rock), the ability to cause mayhem and random destruction, and most important of all they both have crazy people within the group. What I'm trying to say in my somewhat incoherent ramblings is that if you liked Black Lagoon you'd probably like Cowboy Bebop also.

zpatzer zpatzer says...

I think we can all agree Levi kicks as much ass as Spike. Cowboy Bebop's the type of series that is unpredictable and can go anywhere with each episode, just like Black Lagoon.

kakuloo kakuloo says...

Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon give off the same feel of comedic violence, even though they are on the 'opposite' sides of the fight.

JAhU JAhU says...

Both Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon have mercenaries working hard to get some money, but usually end up with their pockets empty. Bebop's crew is a happy bunch of good guys who chase criminals in space, and Lagoon's crew is a happy bunch of bad guys sailing through the south Asian seas. Besides that difference and some minor crew member differences, these series are pretty much the same. ;)

So, one is about badasses in space, and the other is about badasses on the sea, if you liked one, you'll love the other.

Black Lagoon is a great show; it has lots and lots of action, a great storyline, characters that you grow to love that enhance your attachment to the show, and did I mention the action? But if you like this show and you haven't seen Cowboy Bebop then shame on you! Cowboy Bebop is like Black Lagoon, only Bebop is set more into the future. There's a deeper story to tell and instead of involving a delivery crew like Black Lagoon, there are bounty hunters. Cowboy Bebop has great characters that keep you interested, and a great story line. Enjoy both!

jostanto jostanto says...

Both Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon have a group of mercenaries whose members have a troubled past, an uncertain future, and wander on the wrong side of the law.

Both series tell the story of the characters' conflict of interest and their need to rely on each other to survive. Each has humour, some drama, and violence.

Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon both are about a group of unlikely characters who work together and take on jobs for some cash, and the stories are filled with action.

sloggerK sloggerK says...

Outcasts trying to make money through violence, some humor, some action, some self discovery and introspection (but not too much); Black Lagoon and Cowboy Bebop fit together like peas in a pod.

colettelabete colettelabete says...

Black Lagoon is arguably the raunchy version of Cowboy Bebop. While the story follows the same pattern in both series (a bunch of completely different individuals end up together on a ship and try to sort out their differences while having dangerous day jobs), BL is far more gory, cladden with black humor and ultraviolence. CB on the other hand is a lyrical journey, where violence is poetically entangled in the story. While being stylistcally different, both shows touch deeper themes such as loneliness in the modern world, dealing with the past and one's true identity,

JayGee JayGee says...

Both series are about a band of folks who work towards a common goal, yet they don't always get along. Both are gritty series, yet Bebop never loses its sense of style. You can't really say that Black Lagoon compares to Bebop in terms of style, yet the two series are similar enough to say that you'll like them both if you've seen one of them already.

TheGiftedMonkey TheGiftedMonkey says...

Black Lagoon and Cowboy Bebop both follow the everyday lives of your "typical" bounty hunter, smuggler, and straight up outlaw. Doing oddjobs to make a buck with plenty of gunplay in between neverlooked so sweet. If you liked one you'll like the other.

tasanime tasanime says...

It's very strange because I don't think I've known two anime series to be so similar yet completely differently based in this Space cowboys meet modern-day Pirates recommendation! I think its largely in part due to the dynamics of the groups - 4 unlikely protagonists, frequently brushing against the law in order to get by in the ‘real world', a world packed full of violence, gun wielding and ass-kicking. Both are a great pleasure to watch if you're a fan of action based anime.

UltimaParadox UltimaParadox says...

While, Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon may take place in different settings there are quite a few simliarites. Both typically deal with one major underlying theme throughout the series as well as pieceing together a story across one or two episodes. Both are heavy on the gun action, with more mature themes. Spike and Revy have very simliar character traits of a dark past, and beyond normal combat skills. Either anime is a great watch for an action fan, and both deal with the bounty hunter or mecernary scene.

scenthr scenthr says...

These anime are so similar that if you saw one, you have to see the other. Period. So instead of writing all the similarities ill write one of the differences. The setting of the plot is put in the difference timetable, Cowboy beeing in future space, Lagoon beeing in here/now.

Both cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon are action anime about bounty hunters (mercenary groups) and lots of guns! Both have interesting and badass characters including female characters that don't take shit from anyone! Both anime are about style and creating a mess no matter where you are! So, if you liked one of them, I suggest you watch the other one as well, and I'm sure it's going to leave a very good impression!

Frankly I think that Black Lagoon was somehow more interesting to me than Cowboy Bebop Series. The only downside of Black Lagoon is that it takes couple ep.s for each story and there are few ep.s (like 4-5 stories)...

Great action, violance and the trash talk is great too:) (English translation was beautiful).

In both series (Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon) the mersinary type of the livestyle is very interesting, I wander why don't they make more series like these???

If you like shooting, blood, violance, twisted (but not fantasy) plots, language, exagarated women strenght - this should be your choise!!!

twixlin twixlin says...

Cowboy Bebop is one of the all time classics. Black Lagoon revives the gunslinger loose knit family that is formed from necessity. Graphics on both are excellent, but what really hooks you is the story lines that both have. Each episode is stand alone, but fits well within the overall story plot. Must see.

64fanatic 64fanatic says...

Both shows focus on character who are not really good or evil, but just live in the moment trying to get by on the jobs they can find. Black Lagoon is a little more extreme on that point.

Joeisidle Joeisidle says...

Both anime series express a great deal action one first examination but also hide a darker sub-text underneath. Definetly something to concidering if you like the moderately realstic feel and pace given to the action in either including that more hidden daker edge both series have underneath.

valondar valondar says...

Explosive action, witty repartee and a fun and affectionate use of Hollywood movie action cliches - either one of these anime are just a bloody good time - and though Black Lagoon focuses more on the action, that series has its share of character moments and a really wonderful cast as well. If you liked one, don't pass the other up.

stingreis stingreis says...

Both anime's are episodic, yet action based. They are full of gunfights and packed with one mishap after another.

In each anime, you have a central gathering place where the main characters join up and wait for their next mission, thus creating a episode per mission type episodic feel. There are some scenario's that strech out to two episodes, but the fact remains that they are both based on either a mission they need to complete or a bounty to collect, and in the process there is character development.

NerdyNorsman NerdyNorsman says...

Black Lagoon is going for a harsh and gritty feel and the violence is far more mature and graphic than in Cowboy Bebop, especially in the second season. But as in Bebop, it always sooths the story. What bebop fans will find appealing is that they are both about a small group of individuals with various pasts living on the edge of the law... and quite often beyond. Every caracter is just trying trying to get by, day by day. The mix of various tributes and hints to popular culture and history is also something the series has in common, the well coreographed action to. The caracters are deep and rich, and full of personality in both series, and the flashbacks to their pasts just as vague. The last word uttered in the Black Lagoon series is bang, said in a way thats clearly a tribute to Cowboy Bebop. The inspiration shines through.

shinigamidono shinigamidono says...

Very similar feel... bounty hunters, syndicates, armed half-dressed women, lots guns, violence, and blood.. if you just finished one series and you are looking for more of the same goodness, watch the other

gretzky99 gretzky99 says...

The main concepts of these two are quite similar: they feature bounty hunters and their adventures in an episodic manner. We also get to know the pasts of the characters during these adventures.

Wandervox Wandervox says...

It's tough to say whether Cowboy Bebop is 'Black Lagoon with a great polish to it,' or if Black Lagoon is 'Cowboy Bebop sanded down to the base with a coarse stone and rolled in mortar.'

That "base" is a storyline involving a ragtag group of guns for hire. Some are veterans, some are fresh faces, all come from their own set of circumstances. Somehow, they managed to get along just enough to hold the group together and make things work. A common formula, but mix in likeable characters, great action sequences, some slice-of-life circumstances, and a touch of comedy, and you get something truly special.

Lagoon certainly has a dark grit to it that Bebop lacks, while Bebop seems a bit more light-hearted (for the most part), but the two shows share certain elements at their respective cores that really help to make both stand out in their own way. As a result, fans of one will undoubtedly find something to enjoy about the other, even if it comes down to a certain je ne sais quoi.

DeamonLordChaos867 DeamonLordChaos867 says...

Both have a similar feel and somewhat similar characters. Revy is a more badass Faye, Dutch is like Jet, and Benny is a coherent Ed. Rock is the entry character into the crazy world of smuggling on the seas. Give both series a try!

Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon are very similar anime with a different setting.   Bebop is space western while Black Lagoon is set in present day.  But the similarities abound after that.  Group of misfit characters? check.  Running a small business together (mercenary or delivery).  check.  Gunfights.  double check.  Lagoon definitely reminded me of Bebop when I watched it, and if you liked one, the other would be worth a watch.

Black Lagoon and Cowbow Bebop definitely have a similar feel to them. Former is a pretty dark and serious mercenary show focusing mostly on the jobs and life of a mercenary, while the latter has a happy feel to it with lots of jokes and comical situations. Both shows have a great cast of characters, all of whom have a background of their own actually talked about in the story.

Four people going from place to place to make ends meet, constantly on each others' nerves yet possessing a strange sort of camraderie. These shows are very different, yet they're also very similar.

Both Shows have a similar premise on that a small crew take up jobs and end up fighting there way through them at times using their own specialties. They both have overarching stories and incredible character development so much that you will never forget them. Same sort of humor and action however Black Lagoon is more dark than Bebop and definitely for a more adult audience. Despite this if you enjoyed one the other will definitely be your thing and worth the time.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Both of these animes surround a group of mercenaries/bounty hunters. The storylines are episodic while allowing for character growth. There's definitely some adult humor to be found in both animes, as well as some gritty action scenes. Comic relief is tossed in throughout both animes as a way to break up the action, often at the expense of the supporting cast. There is also the pleasure of seeing scantily clad ladies with big guns in both animes.

Both these anime share very similar visuals and art style, really capturing that early to mid 90's anime aesthetic. Many of the main characters feel like they'd really hit it off if they were to attend the same party. And the story structure throughout both shows runtime really hit the same beats.

Couldn't agree more on this both way, black lagoon and cowboy bebop both follow a couple of bounty hunters that just can't catch a break. Every episode brings new and interesting challenges and its really cool seeing the different skills they employ each time to get themselves out of tough situations. what's even more amazing is the fight scenes, considering the age of these animes the choreograph that put into each fight is always really nice,

These two anime feel as if they belong together mercernaries and weapons merchants. They have the same tone to them and if you liked one you will deff like the other. Big guns, assasins and women who kick a$$ the proper way for a change "hellz ya" imo.

Both have very similar concept; mostly everything is based around mercenary business. There is a ton of pumped action in both of them, very enjoyable action.  There is a huge cast of pretty twisted characters with very strong heroine in spotlight.  There´s not much of a plot in either of them, plot is somehow episodic but pretty awesome none the less.  If you liked one you will definitely like the other, I can´t say that they are copying but concept is just too similar, not same, similar!

Both Black Lagoon and Jormungand feature heavy gun use and violence and have the same dark feel and showcase a criminal underworld. Over all I enjoyed both shows immensely and I feel you would too.

CloneCommando CloneCommando says...

Both Jormungand and Black Lagoon focus on a group of "mercenaries/weapons dealers", both shows contain a lot of crazy cool gun fights, and focus on the dark underbelly of society. They both focus on mature themes at times, and feature a strong female cast that you would probably want to run away from if you ever actually met them in real life. If you enjoy one of these shows you will most certainly enjoy the other.

NoblesseOblige NoblesseOblige says...

If you finished "Black Lagoon" and "Black Lagoon Second Barrage" and were dying to see a third, then Jormungand is for you!

- A barrage of bullets and explosions!

- Main characters who are experienced killers, but who have a human side that you see more of as the series goes on.

- Watch the group bond together with each and every adventure.

- Two episode mini arcs with an overarching plot.

- Heart pounding rock soundtrack. (Seriously good guys!)

If you enjoyed these parts of Black Lagoon, you will get more of the same in Jormungand.

But don't misunderstand, there is more then enough differences in the two shows to make them special and enjoyable in their own way. For one, the main protagonist in Black Lagoon is a stuffy office worker who learns to loosen up after he hooks up with a blackmarket courier team. Jormungand's protagonist is the total opposite, a young boy-soldier who is hardened from growing up around violence and war. Journey with him as he struggles to define his feelings towards guns and violence - the thing he hates the most, yet the only life he's ever known.

absolute absolute says...

Jormungand and Black Lagoon are similar for the plot structure. In both titles we find the protagonist joining a group of mercenaries. While in Black Lagoon it's something connected with a precise environment (the "lagoon"), in Jormungand they travel all over the world. Even if the main themes aren't the same, in both series we see the protagonist growing an interior struggle between what they want and what they become inside the new group of people. Action is quite important in both of them even if dialogues and psychological themes are present too. That makes each anime enjoyable for a larger target of watchers.

Zearth Zearth says...

Well, I think Jormungand and Black Lagoon have more similarities than only guns and shooting.

Both animes are violent, and take place in the same “face” of the world, you know. They show the most cruel world. Storylines take place in the same world (but different times).

Black Lagoon may have better characters, but I think that Koko is one of the coolest female-characters I have ever seen.

Aylia Aylia says...

An introspective look at the villains of the story. For anyone that wants to regard their villain as the hero, both anime show plentiful reason to praise the profoundness of their characters in this regard. Well written, good animation, and tension that drives the story. Both display an acuity for their philosophies and express them in interesting actions, thoughts, and verbosity. On the other hand, if you just like mindless action, there's plenty of that too.

Grach Grach says...

Both of these series not only the high adrenaline fights that they are known for, but also more. They both have a strong no-holds-barred female lead, a 'crew' that contains people from all walks of the military (and criminal) life, and the general anti-hero theme. The color tones, atmosphere, and themes are also highly similar to one another. The overall plots are episodic in each, making for a protracted story.

If you liked one, the other is something that is sure to please!

Both are a great crew of complex characters who develop over time with nice backgrounds.  Mystery, good fight sequences and action.

ruxandra ruxandra says...

I have first watched Jormungand and I really loved it. So I thought, I should try Black Lagoon as well and I was not disappointed at all. There are many similarities between these two anime: great female leads, black market, shooting and mafia, but also some differences.

Jormungand tells the stories of the characters, which, by the way, have higher morals than the characters in Black Lagoon, explaining how they joined Koko's team. It also shows another perspective of the life of an arms dealer. I'm talking about the friendship, trust and care these people show towards each other. Koko is an awesome character, a pure genius that has a reason for all of her actions (no, not the money). She rarely fights and has a great taste in picking clothes.

Black Lagoon has more action, more gunfights and blood. Bad language, alcohol, drugs, prostitutes, pointless killings, a black guy that seems invincible, a seemingly useless dude that always wears a shirt and tie, a blonde hacker with a ponytail and, of course, Revy. Oh, and the crazy badass nun. This anime is extremely funny, has brilliant plot twists and some badass shooting scenes.

Definitely check out both of them!

Black Lagoon revolves about Rock unwillingly meeting up with a group of mercenaries but he quickly decides to join up with themJormungand revolves around a child soldier unwillingly meeting up with a group of arms dealers but eentually he decided to join them

I really loved Black Lagoon when i saw it, the anime is about a group of mercenaries in the south-east of asia (in Malaysia zone). The plot is also about some groups of criminals organizations that control the city.

The plot of Jourmungand is the life of an arms dealer and her body guards, we have another time a plot full of mercenaries and criminals group and i find Balalaika really similar to Koko.

Dark, violent, gritty. While Jormungand is certainly not as dark as Black Lagoon is at times, both shows center around violence and criminal aspects. Jormungand definitely has far less of a sense of realism than Black Lagoon, but it's somewhat more lighthearted in other ways. But don't let that deter you, if you like either show, you'll like the other.

I think if you liked black lagoon you’ll like jormungand because both are anime’s that have dark slap-stick comedy. The difference between the heroines is that Revvy is less strategic and is more frenzied when killing. She is out of control and enjoys that. Koko on the other hand is in control, strategic but has a mad personality.  The characters in jormungand are also in depth but are somehow more charming than that of black lagoon. Jormungand is really a feel good show that has some cynicalism. It provides the viewer with a feel good sensation as the group breaks rules and moral constructs. I like the rebelliousness of jormungand.

Rohjake Rohjake says...

These two titles are very similar. Both feature a group of mercenaries in which each member is the expert in some field related to "the business" (e.g. explosives, sniping). The cast in both is diverse and every main character has a rich backstory. If you liked one, give the other a try.

Black Lagoon (1st season only) is very similar to Jormungand. Aside from them both having a similar episode set-up, they are both realistic seinen anime while still being over the top (Jormungand is less over the top than Black Lagoon) with a ton of gunfights. The art style and some characters are very similar as well. If you want a dark and serous anime with guns, watch these two anime!

Each anime focus on the seedy underbelly of the criminal underground. Both are full of action, gunfights, and moral ambiguity. in both anime, our male protagonist is placed in the care of a mercenary group and learn their role inside that gang. While under their control, he agrees to join the crew " known as" the Black Lagoon Co."  which includes merciless and maniacal Revy, Dutch and Benny. Also they both share this "guns for hire" set up that allows the main charaters to get involed in tons of jobs. Would HIGHLY reccommed if you like one or the other.

These anime feel absurdly similar to each other; innocents get dragged into dangerous mafia and mercenary lifestyles, with a lot of guns, epic fight scenes, and a similar art style. The atmospheres are almost identical; gang angst. Isn't that what we all want in life.

Gangsta and Black Lagoon might be very diffrent stories for an adualt aduance but they both do a wonderful job at telling their own stories and pulling on your emotions in practally every direction, fom their exhilarating fight scenes to their emotional (but not overly romntic) love scenes. So if you like Gangsta you will most likely enjoy Black Lagoon and vice versa.

Hellsing

Hellsing

In present day England, a war is being fought. The average citizen does not notice, but vampires are running rampant among the populace, and it's up to the Hellsing organization to contain the bloodsucker threat, using even their own weapons against them. Alucard, a vampire himself, is the best agent the organization has to offer, answering only to Integra Hellsing herself. No one knows much about this mysterious figure fighting against the occult, but things starts to change after he “recruits” a new agent to the establishment...

Lots of gun battles, violence, and adult characters and themes. Can be pretty funny at times too.

JAhU JAhU says...

The thing that connects Hellsing and Black Lagoon is the number of neat gunfights, weird enemies and the smile on Revy and Alucard's faces when they kill. Most likely because of that, when you watch one you will think of the other one. You can blame it also on some few minor plot elements that those series share. Definitely you should try watching this one if you liked the other.

P.S. The same thing goes for Hellsing Ultimate OVA.

Both anime have a great amount of firearm usage, plus a deep story in some part of the anime. If you like firearms in action anime, then both of these anime are good for you.

Sheex Sheex says...

Both Black Lagoon and Hellsing carry that classic "badass" factor that makes them almost automatically entertaining. While Helling carries a fairly stereotypical vampire plot, however, Black Lagoon has a very strong caste of characters to coincide with a decent storyline, and thus would be the stronger of the two. If unequivocal awesomeness is what you're looking for, Alucard/Revy are two main characters whom are sure not to disappoint.

tasanime tasanime says...

It's not the genre so much that binds the two but the attitudes of their unlikely protagonists. Both are very raw, grittier looks at fighting, the underworld and foes, host to a mass of well executed fight scenes that really show us where one can derive pleasure by kicking someone else's ass. If you liked Revy you'll love Alucard and vica versa.

Shinka Shinka says...

The main point of contact between these two anime are two fo the characters; Revy (Black Lagoon) and Alucard (Hellsing). Not only do they have the same smile, but the same attitudes, and one thinks it'be easy to have them exchange places.

Both anime are packed with violence, death, and a great deal of superb firearms battles.

They differenciate from eachother by Hellsing dealing with vampires and the supernatural, while Black Lagoon deals with more down-to-the-earth modern pirate situations.

As long as you are in for a good and violent moment, either one will provide you with what you need.

risuta risuta says...

I can give you one reason, why if watched the one you should watch the other... and that is GUNS! Both anime have a lot of guns and gun shoots, violence, action and characters you're gonna love! So yeah, give it a try.

Even though the stories aren't alike, they still have similarities: Badasses, woman/boys in a strange environment and a lot of blood! Don't call yourself an otaku if you haven't watched both!

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

While Black Lagoon may not have the supernatural aspect that Hellsing has, it does have the massive amount of fighting. Both Revy and Alucard show little to no hesitation before jumping into an all out brawl. They are usually accompanied by a less trigger-happy partner (Rock or Seras). Both anime center around an organization that acts as a mercenary unit, and both are set in a world that is less than ideal.

kirlog kirlog says...

Same mercenary-style plot with right amount of anti-heros. Botch dark-themed with a single character trying to find the good in a world full of evil. Also, in Black Lagoon, if watching you the subbed version you get to hear Revvie[spelling?] say a few phrases in English, which is just plain-out HOT. I belive the same happpens a few times in Helsing, but don't quite remember[I originally saw the dubbed version].

ashman711 ashman711 says...

crazy violent gun battles, quirky/original characters. both shows can take the turn from silly to flat out serious moments. one's about supernatural while the other is about "real" Pirating in south China sea, but if you like one you'll def like the other.

Similar argument, in different place but almost the same. Girls very agressive in a poor/criminal world.

Anyway are two good animes.

valondar valondar says...

Revy and Michiko - the two ass-kickingest women in anime? Granted, Michiko has action combined with the semblance of a personal story (which doesn't quite deliver) while Black Lagoon endulges in a ceaseless orgy of badassery and epically maxed levels of the utlraviolence; but it's quite possible if you liked one you'd like the other.

blankspades blankspades says...

What more could you want from these to anime?

Honestly, the two are very different:

Michiko to Hatchin is an 'chase film' where the sexy Michiko breaks out of prison to recuse the daughter of her old flame. While Black Lagoon features Rock, a normal business man who got mixed up in a no-so-innocent company called Black Lagoon.

There are similarities, of course. Both plots have tons of action and are paced about the same- steady, and leaves you with more questions then answers. And with characters... While most people would compare Michiko to Revy, BL's hardcore and unstable assassin, the actual similar traits lie with Rock. They are both not very cut out for gangs, but they both surprise you as their character progresses. And of course, the sexy and dangerous aura of both aren't lost throughout the plot.

Uriel1988 Uriel1988 says...

The way in which the brazen, petulant and uninhibited Michiko interacts with the reserved and meek Hatchin is very similar to the dynamic between Revy and Rock, respectively.

MtH's storyline and setting are also deeply rooted in a fictionalized version of the criminal underworld that's inhibited by all sorts of colorful characters, much like 'Black Lagoon'.

All of this leads me to think that those who enjoyed 'Black Lagoon' are likely to enjoy 'Michiko to Hatchin' as well.

VivisQueen VivisQueen says...

Assuming you like the idea of feisty, foul-mouthed women in hot pants completely dominating a show and giving everyone involved a wild ride, then Michiko to Hatchin and Black Lagoon are quite nicely matched. Michiko is a sexier and more feminine version of Revy, and Black Lagoon is simply a more hard-boiled concept of underworld life than MtH.

TheMajor5 TheMajor5 says...

If you are into rough tough women with a kickass attitude, look no further.  Lagoon and Michiko have all the violence, harsh cities, and women looking good at whooping ass.  Incredibly fun and exciting titles as we see our hot headed females work there way out tight situations with a kick to the jewels or a bullet to the face.  Either way, you're in for an exhilarating experience once you've seen either woman in action.

Darklegba Darklegba says...

Both are set in a criminal world and feature an innocent character becomming involved in the dealings of a criminal but lovable female main character. Black Lagoon is considerably more violent and sexual, while MtH is more lighthearted. However, they both focus on greatness in a grim world. Sort of a "light struck in darkness" kind of theme. Good stuff.

Like Black Lagoon, Gungrave is another series which has unexpected depth. It has a similar theme of a character-driven exploration of organized crime. It also has its fair share of action later in the series, although not on par with the former.

tasanime tasanime says...

Both Gungrave and Black Lagoon are beautifully animated saction packed series with plenty of interesting characters and some great gun fights throughout. They also similarly provide the viewer with an insight into the psychi of law breakers and the greater criminal organisations giving more depth to the overall themes. Both are must sees for any fan of chaotic violence with a touch of humanity.

Mafia activity, blazing gunfights and illegal dealings are the storytelling medium of both of these shows. While each tells a different story, the protagonist of each changes drastically from the man they were in the beginning. Both are loyal to their friends, but Rock tends to avoid and discourage violence while Brandon becomes more and more entrenched in it. If you have seen one of these and enjoyed seeing how that protagonist changed during the show, enjoyed the action, or simply are curious about the other, be sure to check it out! I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed!

Valksta Valksta says...

Both of these anime portray a sense of realism to there respective themes as far as criminal settings, weapons, and character growth goes. But they also have some crazy, over the top action sequences that are reference to a many John Woo flicks,(flipping- somersault bullet time stuff) to which then kind of contradicts the whole realism aspect of it all. While both anime have crazy "Equilibrium" like gun battles (Christian Bale Kung foo Gunslinger!), Gungrave's focus is more so on Character growth while Black Lagoon is all about shooting first and maybe asking questions later if your still alive(too cool for school!). So if you watched Gungrave and happened to really dig the action sequences too, then you'll probably get a kick out of Black Lagoon!

VivisQueen VivisQueen says...

Gangsters, tough talk, guns and more guns. Both Gungrave and Black Lagoon take a gritty approach where blood and betrayals are aplenty and the world is an unforgiving place to those who don't watch their back. Black Lagoon is firmly set in realism whereas Gungrave tacks on some sci-fi at the end, but the general gist is very much the same. Enjoy.

There is almost no series more akin to Black Lagoon than Outlaw Star. Both hold similar plot lines, however in Outlaw Star the main characters are fighting against the pirates as opposed to being the pirates as it is in Black Lagoon. Outlaw Star is much more science fiction oriented but maintains the "make shift" cast organization. Black Lagoon is a much more serious series, where Outlaw Star has more comedy. Both series don't lack action scenes and both are great to watch.

Full Metal Panic and Black Lagoon both deal with similar organisations; independant armed groups that kick asses of bad guys. The characters are well flawed and benifet from each others company. Both the organizations these series are centered around (Mithril and Lagoon) are armed groups for hire, centered around characters with believable flaws, and amazing fight scenes.

Barth Barth says...

I can't believe no one has said it yet, well not more bluntly at least. One of the main reasons I enjoyed FMP! and Black Lagoon so much is the particular relationship between the two main characters, Chidori and Sōsuke on one side, Revy and Rock on the other. The sexual tension between them is palpable !

Why are their relationships so similar ? Because both characters in each series obviously develop feelings for each other but neither one of them can confess them, due to the fact that they're all emotionally retarded, Sōsuke being socially inept, Chidori being a tsundere, Revy being a sociopath and Rock being… Rock. Also both couples have the same composition : one normal person and one gun freak/badass.

There are other similarities but I wanted to stress this one in particular. As for the differences, Black Lagoon (adapted from a seinen manga) is more violent, though FMP! gets darker and more violent in the second season.

RG RG says...

Two sets of unlikely couples:

Kaname Chidori and Rokuro "Rock" Okajima are more or less normal compared to their overly violent respective partners Sousuke Sagara and Revy.

If you find these sorts of pairings to your liking, these shows are for you.

PurplePeopleEater PurplePeopleEater says...

Besides the fact that one of the female characters in black lagoon looks a lot like one of the characters in Full Metal Panic and both remind me of the other, there are mercenaries and the main character is thrown into a situation he isn't really trained for and sometimes has a hard time fitting it. For Rokuro, he left his ordinary job and joined a group of mercenaries....except he hasn't even used a gun before and his personality doesn't quite fit. Sagura on the other hand is a mercenary who is ordered to attend school undercover as a body guard for a female student...except all he knows is the battlefield and adapting to a normal school life just isn't something he is quite cut out for. Both characters struggle in their new positions with some friends?? to help them along the way...

I have to say after rewatching this again this Black Lagoon has a very "dark aura" around itself. Especially around Revy. Based on that dark aura feeling I have to recommend Burst Angel that has the same feeling.

By Dark aura I don't mean that Revy is shooting a lot with her cutlasses and doing bad things. I mean the reasons that leaded into this situation, that feeling is very strong and gets stronger and stronger when you watched it.

Now I will again point out that eventough Burst Angel has also a woman who is a gunman but both share the same feeling where the dark aura keeps following.
