While it's much more action-packed, darker, and more violent than Meiken Jolie, Full Metal Alchemist is also about a boy's journey motivated by the absence of his mother.  Both series have their moments of adventure and stillness, and both focus on the friendship between the main character and his travelling companion, as well as the places and people he encounters.

The Mysterious Cities of Gold

The Mysterious Cities of Gold

In the sixteenth century, a Spanish orphan named Esteban is exploited for his unusual gift to call forth the sun. But when the man who raised him dies, Esteban travels with Mendoza - the man who saved him from dying at sea when he was an infant - across the ocean to the Americas in search of Esteban's long-lost father and the mysterious cities of gold that Mendoza hopes will contain riches beyond his wildest dreams. They are joined by Zia, an Inca girl with the ability to translate the quipu that will lead them to their destination, and later Tao, the last surviving descendant of the ancient civilization who built the legendary cities they seek. Mendoza, while seemingly caring, has ambiguous motives; though the intentions of Commander Gomez and Captain Gaspard are clear: find all of the gold that they can, and step on anyone that gets in their way...

Can we ever really get tired of stories about couragous children travelling around having adventures? Sebastian is a boy travelling throughout Spain seeking his long-lost mother, while Esteban is a boy who travels out of Spain all the way to South America in search of his long-lost father. Neither child has seen his parents since infancy and both yearn to learn the truth of their whereabouts and why they left their sons behind. Both young boys are brave, kind-hearted and resourceful, and you find yourself wanting them to succeed every step of the way.

The Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgersson

The Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgersson

Nils is a mischievous young tyke; instead of going to church with his parents, he'd much rather stay on the farm and torment the animals. However, one day, Nils comes across a pixie who takes exception to his cheeky demeanor and shrinks him down to miniature size. Now the tables are turned, and the farm animals begin to pick on Nils! Looking to escape, he hitches a ride on Morten the goose, and suddenly he's away with the wild geese as they migrate to Lapland.
