This story takes place during the Bakumatsu era in Japan. Japan’s history looked bleak during this time, and many passionate men fought over hegemony within the country, various ideals in their hearts. Shinsaku Takasugi, a samurai warrior from Choshu, attempts to sneak onto a ship run by Yoshinobu Tokugawa, his partner Kogoro Katsura at his side. Takasugi and Katsura aim to steal a legendary treasure that is said to have the ability to control time: the pocket watch “Jishingi.” However, the moment they obtain the watch, it is stolen from them by a woman dressed in black.
I have seen so many reviews and comments for this anime - pretty much negative, which is why I hesitated on watching it and completing it, but when I noticed that the second season was coming up it kind of gave me a compulsion to finish it so that I could be prepared and enter the next season knowing I remember something. So I gave it a chance. Story: At first it was very confusing. Time travel itself is an iffy element in a lot of series that if not utilised well can really disrupt the flow of things. Later on the anime kind of explains itself and why certain plots occured which was mind blowing (I won't spoil it), but some characters eg. the emperor, seimei's history/background were not explained in details. Hopefully season 2 can do this. Animation: Pretty decent, I felt that some fight scenes earlier on could of been better but thats okay. Sound: To be honest, I'm not sure if it was because I was to engrossed with the dialogue or battle scenes but I really didn't notice and found the music ground breaking. Characters: I feel like the main characters have great chemistry and mature, and I even felt the shinsengumi members likeable and felt sorry for the villian. Overall: I enjoyed this anime a lot, binged watched it and want more. Can't wait for the second season. I encourage anyone who likes shounen to watch this, it won't dissapoint you with that ending!
