Tokyo Ghoul

In modern day Tokyo, society lives in fear of Ghouls: mysterious creatures who look exactly like humans -- yet hunger insatiably for their flesh. None of this matters to Ken Kaneki, a bookish and ordinary young man, until a dark and violent encounter turns him into the first ever Ghoul-human half breed. Trapped between two worlds, Ken must survive the violent conflicts of warring Ghoul factions, while attempting to learn more about Ghoul society, his newfound powers, and the fine line between man and monster.

Reasons you might like Tokyo Ghoul...

jinxcat13 jinxcat13 says...

There are alot of similarities between Attack on Titan and Tokyo Ghoul including the idea that humans are food. the main characters are both attacked by monsters and their lives are drasticaly changed because of it. In attack on titan eren and the gang then dedicate their lives to fighting these monster while in Tokyo Goul the main character has to fight the monster within. both shows will have the familiar sounds of poeple screaming, people dieing, people throwing up, and people fighting for their lives. If you liked one you will like the other. These are two great shows and I cant wait to see more of them both.

essateg essateg says...

Both are gorey, bloody animes, where Humans have been taken off the top of the food chain and are subject to being eaten. Both have a strong and determined male protagonist.

princezach princezach says...

both are gorey, blood filled animes where humans are on the menu, literally. both have great character development that really hits the feels hard when something bad happens to them, and something bad always happens in these animes

xXHanakoXx xXHanakoXx says...

Kind of similar plot with Attack on Titan in a sense that humans are being eaten, but it unfolds differently.

You should try Tokyo Ghoul if you love Attack on Titan, because I loved both and can relate to both.

ccallstar111 ccallstar111 says...

Both discuss the war of humanity versus another species (ghouls, titans). Morality and insanity are common topics. Both main characters deal with internal struggle and have a difficult time finding balance between hatred, power, and friendship. Blood and death are extremely common.

Frawd Frawd says...

They are both bloody, violent and have plenty of thrilling fights where you don't know who will die.

Maryb384127 Maryb384127 says...

both anime take place in a world were  men eating monsters exist. In both anime the main character can *spoiler alert* turn in to said monsters. Both also involve in  internal struggle of the charters trying to control their monster side.

dillontoh1997 dillontoh1997 says...

If you like gore, these anime will satisfy you. In addition, both anime show how rather simple main characters turn into warriors by the end of it, while showing their struggles along the way (pretty typical main character story arc).

Natsuki97 Natsuki97 says...

nothing wrong with a bit of mystery and gore right? this is something you should definitely watch if you like demons and that sort

abinouaraicha97 abinouaraicha97 says...

i belive that the male lead in this two anime have slow start and the way they gain there power is by having an deadly accident

about the female lead in both anime are strong (toka anda mikasa ) compared to the male lead thats way i think if you like one of theme you wil like the other

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Both of these animes feature a protagonist that slowly builds his power across the anime, learning to control his own abilities. He's a young man fighting for his friends to survive, no matter the cost.

Both animes also feature a great deal of blood, interesting fighting techniques, and a strong-willed female lead. Good luck surviving these animes!

RickGrimes RickGrimes says...

Both are dark and gritty, deep characters. AoT has better action scenes while Tokyo Ghoul has...meh.

Both have a decent pacing good story and intresting characters combines with Guts and Blood

Mikasa201 Mikasa201 says...

Both fantastic. Great and sad story, wonderful characters, lots of action and eating people.

HikenNoAsxce HikenNoAsxce says...

Both are Dark and Mature stories, Both have a likeable Protaganist but Tokyo Ghoul has a more complicated Protaganist. Both have a wide variety of great characters other than the protaganist. And both have a badass Female lead

Teach Teach says...

They're both a more mature and darker take on anime. With great stroy that actaully suprises and is hard to predict. They also have great action sequences and are generally a breath of fresh air for anime that dragged me back to it. Also I left because I thought all anime was like Naruto or One peice, I was wrong.

nathanbrauner nathanbrauner says...

they both have amazing stories and similar plot lines in that, the main characters in each series are batteling to either abandon or keep their humanity

FayeCki FayeCki says...

Very similar anime, but different stories. Both have a good amount of action. Main characters are fighting for humanity, within themselves and for everyone else. I highly recommend these anime.

NaomiEX NaomiEX says...

I believe they both have a similar horror-like feel to them. Both has good characters and really interesting stories. They're both about supernatural beings and I think anyone who like AoT or Tokyo Ghoul would like the other

It's vaguely similar but very different at the same time as AoT tells about a nearly extinct  human race hunted by Titans while Tokyo Ghoul tells about... Well ghouls.

BloodyRedRoses BloodyRedRoses says...

It's awesome, they both have many similar qualities in the genre and it's just worth watching in general.

JadedEagle17 JadedEagle17 says...

If You liked Attack on Titan, You might enjoy Tokyo Ghoul, because in some ways it's like "Attack on Titan flipped on it's head". They both center around the idea of humans being the prey of non-human beings. And they both feature a half-human protagonist forced into the struggle between the two sides. And they both explore "what is a monster?" and "what is human?" The big differences are that in this case, the "human-eaters" are the underdogs being hunted by a society of humans. While some are dangerous, others are just trying to survive in peace. And while Attack on Titan is post-apocalyptic, Tokyo Ghoul is set in realistic modern society and has a more clandestine/dystopian feel. Regardless of these differences, they are both mature, gorey and bleak series with good characters and if you liked AoT, you'll probably like this.

selvi selvi says...

if you're lookin for ghore anime contains blood, blood, and blood, but still have a good story and plot

Aerythrin Aerythrin says...

Both dystopian anime set in a world where the 'monsters' are trying to eat the humans. Both contain aspects of moral greyness, where it's unclear whether what the humans are doing is right or wrong.

Both include a main character who can transform in some way. It appears that both are artificially made, too, not just natural.

delano delano says...

literally all the death and sadness, but with well developed characters and very nicely animated. interesting plot gets you asking a lot of questions

maysillee maysillee says...

Although the plots of Attack on Titan and Tokyo Ghoul are very different, they both feature a main character who essentially turns into a "monster" and the mystery surrounding WHY they became that way.  They also share a great cast of diverse characters.

anxme anxme says...

Theyre both action packed and contain the eating of people so thats something I guess and theyre both really good anime generally speaking. The plot is good in both.

Jarubakit Jarubakit says...

I just want to agree on this recommendation to help out. Now I'm just filling up hundred characters.

pdraven pdraven says...

Both feature humanoid monsters and explicit violence. In addition, they share the common aspect of a human who finds himself turned into a monster they fear (and want revenge against, in Attack on Titan's case) but attempts to use the newfound skills to protect his friends.

YagamiRiku YagamiRiku says...

Both include a once "normal" main character who has a transformation to become the "enemy" in some way. Lots of violence and gore in both. Badass and strong characters, male and female, in both.

galpal galpal says...

Both anime feacher young men trying to survie in worlds filled with monsters. There troubles worsen when the men turn into the vey monsters there worlds fear. So yea Attack on Titan and Tokyo Ghoul have simeler conflicts to them. I'm sure fans of one will enjoy the other.

lebastek lebastek says...

They're both pretty much the same, Action and Drama, Love em both! <3 XD

The main characters are a lot like eachother, Eren & Kaneki: Weak in the beginning, something happens to em both, they meet lots of new people, the plot begins, really nice all together.

They are both really good, recommend em to everyone.

Mostly people that likes Action, Drama and... different specied main characters.. *wink* >w<

PerfectAssPineapple PerfectAssPineapple says...

They give of the same kinda vibe to them, like you know cannibalism ( kinda )and eccentric characters ect. Also I would personally put both of them in my top five, easy. The characters are well built and are brilliantly designed. I would recommend both for anyone;)

EmmaDoesThings EmmaDoesThings says...

they're both alike. Humans fearing something inhumane. The inhumane thing is eating humans, there's gore, great character development.

tacocat77 tacocat77 says...

both have:

- mysterious man-eating creatures

- main character becomes what they hate

- the "man vs monster" conflict cliche

- great animation

- gore and tragedy :D

SaltedPistachio SaltedPistachio says...

Spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen AOT

Both series are pretty similar. Conflicted guy struggles in the world he lives and eventually turns into the very thing they hate. Attack on titan does a better job at not only following the manga but also pleasing the viewers but Tokyo Ghoul does have its highlights.

Draker Draker says...

both anime is full of action and litle touch of drama with a very good story plot.I have watched both anime and i loved them both.

They both have action-packed storylines with troubled main characters. Though the main characters are very different, they both change in some way during the story. Bothe have bits of gore, well one has a lot of gore

Psychodeathgeass Psychodeathgeass says...

I just like Attack on Titan, first series isnt interesting for me, both the second one was much more better and now I really like the anime also manga.

Attack on Titan has an interesting world, the people live without hope and fight with Titans. Many deaths, too much pain and good characteres. Thats why I like it.

i was trying to watch Tokyo Ghoul and I almost finished but I couldnt stand the main character. Also the story was the same again and again and i was boring.

PeachPetit PeachPetit says...

People are being eaten and in both the main character is only half human plus there is a lot of death

THEY ARE BOTH AMAZING!!!!!

so go and watch :) and ENJOY

uncreativeusername uncreativeusername says...

Both animes involve another type of species, and humans fighting the species in order to survive.

SamKermit SamKermit says...

They both include a the main character gaining a special power that everyone else views as special like how Kaneki is a one eyed ghoul and Eren can transform into a titan, both things create conflict for the character and builds up drama that adds to what happens later in both animes. A portion of other characters view these things as a way to help the other portion view it as a threat and the character needs to die. As the animes move on these things start to get more fimiliar to the character and the character uses them for the benifit of others, but sometimes it can be seen as putting others in harms way. too. Both have a sinilar plot line by the main characters recieving the power and we then watch how that affects thier lives and others, too.

Aspie Aspie says...

Both of them have a canabalistic side to them. And in both anime series the main male character can transform into what the humans call their enemy. Though the male character chooses to help his friends or his country by assuming the form of the supernatural existence they have buried within their body’s.

talk77 talk77 says...

its dramatic and they both turn into something society hates as well there are many characters in both that keep getting developed and you cant help to watch more and more

caitace caitace says...

I can see why this is a recommendation. They both base of a conflict between human and some kind of species (ghoul or titan). The main characters have many similarities, one main one being the both have aspects of both sides (humans vs some kind of species). I totally recommend this. WATCH ITTTTT

FangSoul777 FangSoul777 says...

tokyo goul is simular in the sense they are both dark and focuse on an event that lead them to where they are now

weebthegamer weebthegamer says...

Both have main characters that become monsters.  If you like one toy should hopefully enjoy the other. They are also both full of action!

VernBFF VernBFF says...

i think you would like both because they are both dark anime about monsters and humans. attack on titan has a main charictor who can turn into a tiatin and tokyo ghoul has a main charecter that is part ghoul.

Jaimefm Jaimefm says...

Both anime have a plethora of blood, guts, and heartbreaking deaths. In worlds where humans are no longer at the top of the food chain, both main characters learn what it really means to face their demons. Both also force the viewer to really think about what makes someone human, and at what point their humanity isn’t lost.

Ashley159 Ashley159 says...

They both have a lot of action in them and they both worry about being overrun by the enemy. They might be different stories but they both are great.

adeil adeil says...

The principal characters want the best for the world and they would do anything to protect the people they love and the whole world. Born as humans but eventually because different situations they are special, kaneki was about to die until the doctor safe his life and become half ghoul, and Eren was the son of a doctor who he somehow give him the key to create or become a titan.

emylyebunny emylyebunny says...

Those animes look the same and the characters are similar. Eren and Kaneki has the same personnality I think! If you like Tokyo Ghoul, you will love Attack On Titan because of all suspense this anime has. If you like Attack On Titan, you will love Tokyo Ghoul because the horror/fiction is more pushed.

MeiSieuIsStarlord MeiSieuIsStarlord says...

Both animes discuss interaction between humans and a human-eating race of beings, in a society focused on both fighting for the existence of humanity, and fighting against the existence of the other race. Both animes also have individuals that cross the boundaries between both races in the anime, either by taking a neutral stance, fighting for the opposite side than their born race, or literally being both human and part of the human-eating race.

Both of these animes explore the complications of being part of a war you never asked to be part of, and being the main pawn/leader in a battle that you were definitely not qualified for.

There are many character deaths in both. They are gory, emotional, brutal, cynical, hopeful, and insightful parallels on how we treat controversial decisions and individuals in society.

AnimePixel AnimePixel says...

They do have a lot in common. Tokyo Ghoul is about Ghouls who camouflage themselves with humans, living the same lives as them, except that they also eat them and they also have their own special powers that include additional body parts like tails/wings/random long bone things that stick out of their bodies to kill people with. Attack on Titan is about people who are confined in a walled-in space with titans that attack them every once in awhile Both main characters hadn't wished to become a titan/ghoul, but had to deal with it. Some people in the animes accept that they are different, but others don't. There are many characters that support both main characters despite their changes, but many others backlash them because they are monsters. Both characters became half-humans even tho they were originally both humans which shows how similar their situations are. So I highly recommend both ways because both animes are great pieces of work.

jacobmyman jacobmyman says...

the anime is a masterpiece

in my opinion, it's the first no number 1 anime i have ever watched, i mean yeah i've watched a lot of animes including all of the 2000s but i got to admit it, attack on titan is the best of the best......if you wanna watch some real killing-loving-hating anime then go for attack on titan

the show might not look like it at first when you start watching but when you reach the middle bro, you would wanna keep going without stopping man

the anime is incredible bro...if you love anime and you're not or haven't watch attack on titan then you're missing bro, you're missing the most incredble anime there've ever been

They are very good animes. Both of the main characters are attacked by the 'monsters' from their world and then turned into one themselves(Eren as titan shifter, Ken as half-ghoul.) Humans are targets of the ghouls and titans to eat so there are groups within the anime who train to defeat the monsters. In Tokyo ghoul some would like to coexist where in AOT the titans do not have any thoughts on anything.

BeingMe BeingMe says...

Both MC's lives suddenly changed cause of tragic incident.

Both include fight between human and another society.

Charecters are trying to find balance between humanity, friendship, love, hate, power and war.

Be prepered for blood, depresion, anxiety and death which are this anime full of.

blissinapricot blissinapricot says...

Both these animes fall under the horror theme of humans being fed on as food. They're both gorey animes that present a good development of the main character throughout. Both the male protagonists have some sort of power, such as Eren turning into a half-titan, and Kaneki turning into a half-ghoul, that links them to the title.

shmeezzy shmeezzy says...

both main characters were looked at as weak utill they turn in to a bad ass monster and go a bit nuts

xyst xyst says...

Both anime are set in a world where humans have to survive being eaten by another creature. The main characters both go through much character development and character phases. The start of the anime both believing that the said creatures are evil, black and white. But as the series progresses, things are shown to be more complicated than that.

qattuki qattuki says...

Well, the tragedy plot is similar between these animes and it is recommendable that you watch one another if you've enjoyed one of these.

BlkAngle BlkAngle says...

*may have some spoils*

In both animes there are creatures that can sometimes not be distinguished from humans. The main characters both become what they hated and after a while they accept it and become the best in using it over time. Both main characters are also self-involvement, and both gradually revolutionized and made a great transformation within themselves, whose personality changed altogether. Both animes have masterpiece mangas and are one of the best.

WolfX12 WolfX12 says...

They reason these anime's are similiar because both of the main charecters both become something they did not want to be,but then they found a way to make those flaws good.Another reason is that ghouls and titans both eat humans and they're both being hunted, both of the main charecters also very much struggle with their life.

CutePatzie CutePatzie says...

They both dark and psychological anime with the great character development of the main character. A lot of hidden details and symbolisms that make history a lot more intresting.

Claymore

Claymore

In times of olde, humans live in constant fear of demons known as yoma. These vicious creatures can take the appearance and memories of humans they have devoured, thus blending into society as they freely feast on human flesh. The key to stopping the yoma lies with the tolerated yet feared Claymores - women who are half-demon, half-human, and fully fated to become the demons that they hunt. Meanwhile, in a village, the young Raki has been banished; his only crime was losing his family to the yoma. Raki is drawn to a Claymore named Clare, and together their journey begins. While Clare fights the yoma plaguing the land, can Raki help her in her struggle to retain her humanity?

Reasons you might like Claymore...

TheBlackYeti TheBlackYeti says...

Both anime share a general feeling of unease and hopelessness. If you enjoyed "Claymore" for the violence there is (will be) plenty of that to be found in "Attack on Titan". In both anime there are monsters that are trying to destroy mankind and in both anime there is a group of "soldiers" who fight them.

Both shows also share a similar color palette and animation style.

If you liked one you should like the other.

rashura rashura says...

Very similar mood, monsters/titans invading human territory and feeding on them. Very in your face brutality with lots of fighting and deaths. If you like serious animes with no mercy, then this is for you.

element72 element72 says...

Yep I would say its a mix of claymore and rainbow. I added Rainbow as a recommendation below.

azanimefan azanimefan says...

If you liked Claymore you might like Attack on Titan.  Both anime are in fantasy settings featuring swords and monsters, both seem to highlight neigh impossible to win wars, with humans cowering in fear from some sort of monster which feeds on them, and include a focus of the story on characters who's job it is to battle those monsters to protect humanity.  There are other similarities but those would be spoilers.

snivets snivets says...

Set in worlds where humans live in a constant state of fear, both Shingeki no Kyoujin and Claymore feature highly specialized warriors battling monsters for the sake of humanity. Both share a cold, cruel world outlook, and an atmosphere of futility and violence. I think fans of either show would enjoy the other.

YellowNinka YellowNinka says...

Both have a very dark atmosphere. I also find the art to be similar in some ways. Plenty of blood and gore to go around. I just started Attack on Titan but I can already tell I'll like it as much as Claymore.

Naga Naga says...

Both series are set in grim, medieval time where humanity struggles against its man-eating nemesis. The main focus of both shows would be on humanity’s defenders (both are some sort of military) and their struggle to survive against all odds. There’s blood, there’s violence and there’s revenge, so if you’re a fan of one it wouldn’t hurt to check out the other one.

Brad Brad says...

Both these series have similar settings and the same bleak tone created by the need to fight a powerful enemy against all the odds. A sense of futility is conveyed in both, with revenge and violence being strong themes throughout. Strong female characters are also prominent in both series. Any more details would e spoilers, but i think it's a safe bet that if you enjoyed one, you will enjoy the other.

KiyoneSaya KiyoneSaya says...

Both anime showcase unknown creatures inhabitating the world. With people willing to fight with said creatures and are some how related.

hunnybeee hunnybeee says...

Both Attack on Titan and Claymore are about monsters eating people and someone who is trying to stop them .Both shows are really creepy and in the both shows the buildings look old.In the both shows someone very important to the main character dies and he/she becomes a warrior to avenge her.

YinZ YinZ says...

Both share the same feeling of hopelessness and absolute despair. I would say that shingeki no kyojin (attack on titan) is more violent, and a bit less childish at the begining (no babysitting). Both are scary violent and pwetty good.

Scythwolf Scythwolf says...

Just like totally - atmosphere is the same, setting, degree of darkness, amount of blood... only the claymore women with big swords are replaced by soldiers with normal swords who can swing around like crazy.

Loz25 Loz25 says...

I don't think I've ever seen two series so similar to each other. If you like one you will most likely also like the other.

Tinkerbellx3 Tinkerbellx3 says...

Yes totally! Shingeko no Kyojin reminded me so much on Claymore! They both wear a similiar feeling, the main character is pushed over his limit to get stronger and is doubted by his comrads because of the resulting changes. He suffers defeat, even though his will is stronger than anything.

Aniad Aniad says...

Both anime's are great and quite voilent, so be prepared! Somtimes they are bloody as wel, with thor off limps and such. Evenso, I reccoment both!

KillianSeraphim KillianSeraphim says...

Both of them are dark fantasy with a decent story and intriguing characters.  Both of them take themselves rather seriously, so no over the top silliness that doesn't fit, and no senseless fan service (that I know of.)  The action is stellar, the music is good, and overall, these are very well put together animes.

Grach Grach says...

Both of these series delve into many dark themes, which is not so much due to the 'showing' as the 'telling'. Both also take place in a medieval European setting with swordsmanship and similar weaponry and depict conflict for what it is - full of bloodand gore with little remorse for the fallen.

If you liked one, the other should be something to look into!

AruValentine AruValentine says...

Both anime show a very similar theme of "humanity being plauged by physically stronger beings." Both anime show a like soldier-class person who can slay these monsters. Claymore may be older but it's a very good anime and has strong, intense emotion and battles, the same is to be said of Attack on Titan. Both are amazing and I would highly recommend either one.

Sianeka Sianeka says...

If you enjoyed either Claymore or Attack on Titan, give the other one a look.  Both anime feature worlds where humanity is facing a much more powerful enemy that has the capacity to destroy the entire human race. Both anime are dark themed and serious, as well as brutal and violent. But the spark of hope of victory against tremendous odds is never quite extinguished.

Both shows highlight a solution that could compromise the integrity and even the very humanity of the fighters and heroes of mankind.

Both shows delve into the morality of killing, and ponder questions of right and wrong, the nature of good and evil. Just how far is one person allowed to go? How far is too far? How much is too much and what is the value of sacrifice?

Intriguing and thought-provoking, fans of either show would do well to check out the other. I'm sure the new show would also be as well appreciated!

triplestrike triplestrike says...

Both heavy on combat and action. Both raw and brutal as well. Adults only. Kids stick to Naruto for now.

HiddenNugget HiddenNugget says...

Both anime have people fighting against monsters using swords, while the human race fears them. Also the general mood is very similar.

lewis8500 lewis8500 says...

this anime is awesom, if you expecting to see some comedy it's not much. this anime is ful of surprises and i can promise you you won't want to miss a thing.

Gavia Gavia says...

Both are dark action series where the main characters face off against monsters.

In both shows there is a sense of futility about the situation, coming from both the difference in power between the protagonists and the monsters, as well as the nagging fears that humans may be the true monsters after all.

The series have similar settings, with similar levels of technology found in the worlds.

If you like one you should try out the other.

thatotakugirl thatotakugirl says...

Both Claymore and AOT take place in mideval worlds populated by monsters who eat humans. They also follow a protagonist with the power to stop these monsters, but their powers are feared by normal society. Both series are very grim, and what little glimmers of hope the characters are allowed to bask in are cut short quickly.

MindCrush MindCrush says...

Many common themes and similarities in visual style (albeit Claymore is a bit older). If you love one, then chances are the other will also do it for you.

Jayage Jayage says...

Both Claymore and AOT are very similar for one both are set in the medieval times, where humans are fighting against man eating monsters. Both animes have alot of fun kickass action scenes and both also have really badass female characters.

Jaabbi15 Jaabbi15 says...

I see a similar vibe going on between Attack on Titan

Claymore has their Yomas, while Attack on Titan have their Titans.

Their are a specailized group of people who take down these human-eating monsters.

Both main characters have had their families torn apart(literally) by these creatures

The female leads both swear to protect the male leads.

I prefer Attack on Titan over Claymore, only because of the anime design, but thats just me. I deff recommend Claymore

Maisuke Maisuke says...

Well, Attack on Titan is in the line of gore animes with brutal scenes. If you want a similar anime, I would prefer Claymore. Although Claymore is also sword fighting and such, it is not mythical like Attack on Titan having titans in their era. But if you're really in to gore animes, these animes are perfect to satisfy your crave for brutal and sadistic scenes. :> I hope you'll have fun watching and reading.

LordKira1 LordKira1 says...

Both feature humans fighting for their survival and a protagonist with powers from the ''enemy''. Also Claymore is amazing and if you haven’t seen it, you really need to. Like, stop whatever it is you were thinking of doing today and watch this show right now.

dudzor dudzor says...

Both anime presents high amount of drama and gore/bloody/epic fights.I would say Attack on titan is definetly slower in the term of Action.

Xiomax Xiomax says...

both will make you stare souless at your screen trying to process wtf just happend. Both series are fucking epic!

PandaBear87 PandaBear87 says...

Both center around the theme of "the best way to fight monsters is with monsters" (or fight fire with fire).

AmazingLagann AmazingLagann says...

The thing that I enjoyed about both Attack on Titan and Claymore was the actual suspense that comes in each battle when anyone can die. No one is safe, therefore there is actual tension in fights.

Also human eating monsters, but I'm fairly certaint that people don't have interests that specific.

While Clare fights the yoma plaguing the land, can Raki help her in her struggle to retain her humanity?

if you like a dark, mature anime where people kill monsters with swords watch attack on titan. It is far more mature, fleshed out, and visually appealing than Claymore

Nauman Nauman says...

Both anime have action, violence and revenge don't know if claymore can be categorised in military as well but its close enough. Attack on titan's animation can not be compared to claymore neither there are as many characters in claymore but the plot is similar as the main character loses someone who was precious to them to some creature so he/she seeking revenge gets stronger and is aided by companions to acheive their goal.

I watched Claymore first, and Attack on Titan later.  They both have the theme of humans are prey to the monster.  I feel AoT took it one or two steps in a more extreme direction, or rather made it more real.

Aside from this theme there wasn't much other overlap.  I would reccommend Claymore to anyone who wants to see a different take on that same idea.

stevensrmiller stevensrmiller says...

Both are about battles with powerful, enigmatic monsters, with "our" side using simple weapons. There is a great sense of poignance in these stories. The warriors mostly assume they are going to die soon, but for a purpose that leaves no other option open to them. The artistic style is 100% serious, with none of the comedic bits that intrude on so much otherwise good anime.

They feel the same. Its humans vs monsters they don't understand and then they find out things are not exactly what they seem at first (lots of struggle and tragedy mixed in). Also great animation.

Attack on Titan and Claymore have many simularities, but the main theme of Human vs Monsters is the clear winner to tie these togther. Both have elements of violence as our characters fight for their lives and they both battle monsters of unknown origin that we learn about throughout the story. While Claymore only have Female fighters Attack on Titan have both Men and Woman fighting alongside eachother. Both are great Anime with twist and turns in their adventure.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

During the industrial revolution, mankind is threatened by the sudden emergence of undead monsters who can only be killed by piercing their heart through an iron plate. Those bitten become one of them. Called the “Kabane,” these monsters exploded in number. The Hinomoto people built fortress stations and barricaded themselves inside. Only steam locomotives, the Hayajiros, can travel between them.

Reasons you might like Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress...

Shikiya Shikiya says...

Walled fortress to keep out the humans that became monsters, and one person who comes to posess a mean to defeat the monsters more effectively. Both protagonists lost their most precious person to the monster. Bushi in Kabaneri equals Military in SNK. First episode, the wall falls in both of the series.

You have to watc both of them to see the exact similiarities, but they are similar in many ways. Both of plenty bloodthirsty.

However, SNK is set in European setting, with renaissance technology. Kabaneri is set in premodern Japan type of society with technologies varying from 19 to 21st century. Being bit by Kabane in Kabaneri signifies that you will become a Kabane too, like a zombie, but people are eaten like snacks by titans in SNK

kremlin kremlin says...

Only watched the first ep but it looks like a no brainer with regards to Kabaneri and Titan being of a similar type

Sinlessclown Sinlessclown says...

Walled fortresses to stop monsters entering. Spoiled people who hid within the walls. They have some simililarities but you need to watch both to understand. And I recommend that you do watch them both, but be warned there is plenty of blood spewing everywhere.

calophichan calophichan says...

In both we have a post-apocylaptic world where groups of people live inside a walled city to survive a threat to humanity. In the case of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, the people know of more than one city and the cities are connected by railways and armored trains shuttle supplies and people back and forth. Trains still have to pass through stations that have succomed to the disease, which is how the disease can spread.

Notably, Kabaneri has the same director and animation studio as Attack on Titan, but looks worlds nicer than AoT ever did. Hopefully it doesn't suffer from the same pacing issues.

yamiksha yamiksha says...

First Episode Review: The first anime to catch my attention since Attack on Titan. Finally something that looks really good.

The story is promising. Demons rampaging and possible Demon Powers for our hero who is basically Eren Yeager from AoT except he's an inventor and it looks like he has a love interest.

The animation will please any old school anime fan. The art is a detailed traditional style of animation. AoT has great art but I think this anime has a little more love and attention in it. I've never been a fan of the more clean computer drawn feeling a lot of new anime have. Something goes missing in the art process when computers are used for the majority of the work.

The music fits well with the goings on and it would not be unpleasant to watch the opening and ending credits instead of skipping over them.

I don't mind that the main character is basically Eren-AoT but maybe the future episode will show us something to set him apart. It's to soon to make any calls on the supporting cast.

In conclusion I'm eagerly looking forward to the next episode.

PurplePeopleEater PurplePeopleEater says...

As soon as episode one of Kabaneri began I thought "Attack on Titan!" with zombies instead of giants. Both anime have a lead male who is somehow more involved with the enemy (giants or zombies) than the average person and in a way is half human and half enemy. The setting is during a time when humans have built a city  within a wall and cut off from the rest of the world for the most part. The main character has a passion to protect the humans even though many of the humans fear him because he is part monster. It will be interesting to see where Kabaneri goes. It might just end up better than attack on titan. Either way, if you liked one, you will probably like the other.

Kabaneri and AoT are very very similar:

-Wit Studio, Hiroyuki Sawano music, cinematic feel, unique art style, fluid fight scene animation, lots of blood/deaths/violence, similar pacing

-walled fortresses surrounding isolated cities, apocalyptic steampunk fantasy, quasi-historical setting (Edo-period Japan in Kabaneri, anachronistic elements of different European time periods corresponding with different levels of cities)

-relentless grim dark tone, harsh ethical choices of abandonment and suicide, greedy people who only care about their own survival, trampling others, corrupt police force that the MC derides as cowards, oppressive hierarchy, government being brutal to its own people

-undead monsters (zombies in Kabaneri, man-eating Titans in AoT) outnumbering a dwindling population of humans, monsters can only be killed by destroying a certain part of their body

-bloodthirsty MC who doesn't want humanity to hide behind walls anymore and starts fighting back against the monsters, insanely determined to eliminate the monsters and protect humanity despite others fearing him, tragic backstorywith family death

-highly skilled and deadly female lead, MC's loyal friend who refuses to abandon him

-MINOR SPOILERS: first episode invasion and evacuation, when the initial attack occured MC goes back to his house to get his secret weapon, human-monster hybrids that are humanity's last hope, MC having to face much distrust and suspicion that he's one of the monsters

This anime should in be at the very top of the list. Not only does this anime give off the same vibe of Attack On Titan, but it is also hosted by the exact same director! If you want to watch a show that is very, very similar to Attack On Titan, then please ignore everything and everyone else on the list of recommendations list for now, and go and watch this anime. It's a must and it will not disappoint i.e. it is so similar to AOT it might as well have been Season 2 of AOT (lol).

This anime is too similar to Attack On Titan, the art style, the graphics and animation, and even the concept. Simply put, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is Attack On Titan, but with Zombies instead of Giants.Like the famous AOT series, the anime also comes with an OP character called Mumei, the only difference between her and Mikasa and Levi, is that the former characters are less annoying and much more intelligent. Either way, both the shows have a main protagonists who is unhappy with the way things are and wish to gain power. They both protagonists have a scary facial expressions at time, and recieve power-ups from the creatures they hate the most. In AOT's case, that would be Erens Titan transformation, whilst in kabaneri of the iron fortress, that would be Ikoma's abilities he recieved from getting bitten by the Zombie and surviving.Great animes, loaded with lots of action and cool fight scenes. Plenty of gore and sadness to go around. Not even children are spared from this anime's monster world. A must watch for all AOT fans :)

Amzillaa Amzillaa says...

Humanity has been driven into a corner due to a species preying on them and they have very little way to defense themselves against it except for fleeing. Both in a sort of midieval to steampunk setting and the fight scenes are very good. The storyline of both anime eventually differ gravely although they seem very similar in the beginning.

cm1000 cm1000 says...

In both of these anime the action scenes are done very nicely.

Both shows feature a post-apocalyptic world in which mankind was brought to the brink of extinction and has walled itself to remain safe. While the threat is different and the world they take place is different (Attack on Titan is set in a world similar to a medieval Europe and people is attacked by titans, while Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is set in a feudal-like Japan and humanity is attacked b zombies) they sure have the same feeling, so if you liked one make sure to check the other!

Delusionalenigma Delusionalenigma says...

These anime have the same plot with different premises. While Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is noticeably more steampunk than Shingeki no Kyojin, the differences just about end there. The threat of the Kabane is equal to the threat of the Titans, with a select few being more equipped to fight than others because they have their feet dipped in two different pools - that of the enemy and that of mankind. The main distinction between these two anime is the ending. About halfway through, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress takes a turn from being an anime about survival against a large and overwhelming force to one of personal revenge and the will to remain true to oneself. Overall, there are many parallels between these two anime as they even have many of the same staff including but not limited to the director, Tetsurou Araki, and Hiroyuki Sawano as musical composer therefore allowing Kabaneri to have a similar feel to Attack on Titan.

They have a very similar story line - both are about cities attempting to survive being overrun by beings stronger than themselves; Attack on Titan focuses on Titans (large humanoid creatures hellbent on devouring and destroying the city) and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress attempts to survive and onslaught of creatures relatable to zombies. Both a little gory but action-packed and keep you on the edge of your seat.

puranborusu puranborusu says...

The feeling of the two are very similar. Both are very well made, like how the fighting scenes give you an exciting feeling and how the music enhances the feeling of the story etc. (Maybe it's because they were directed by the same director.)

They are about surviving, death, fighting and protecting themselves from "monsters" which origin is unknown (so far). The main character wants to fight the evil side and stands out in some way in both. I got the feeling that the humans were powerless against the "monster threat" in the same way.

Tygerz Tygerz says...

Both post-apocalyptic, if you can call AoT that. Both are very similar. The main characters’ struggle to beat the odds. To return humanity to its former glory. To  Go “Beyond the walls”. To save humanity from complete annihilation and  extinction. Both “over-powered”; both stubborn; a raging fire lite in their eyes. Determination to see everything back to normal, or as normal as can be.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress turns its own drab and hopeless world into something gorgeous, creating a hellscape you might not mind visiting. Even if you love the way Attack on Titan looks, it doesn't take place in the kind of world you would ever want to live in, but Kabaneri succeeds more as spectacular escapism, especially if you're partial to steampunk. The show is always playful and generous with its use of color and light, even in its brownest and dirtiest places. There are bright blue skies, pastel pink kimonos, and even radiant purple zombie guts with fiery orange blood vessels pulsing through them. There's a spark of beauty in every scene, and the final product looks like no other anime out there.

There is plenty of action, gore, and exciting moments in both series.

Same concepts, all of the main characters are trapped inside facilities where their lives are dominated by a world that consumes them on the outside. They attempt to flee those worlds and try to combat those forces that try to kill off the main cast.

[Spoiler Kinda?]

If you are caught up in the mangas you can DEFINITELY see a resembolence, even how the monsters transform based on... I’ll just leave it at that.

They both have a similar feel in the sense of desperation to survive type of theme. Because of the extreme conditions faced in their worlds, the characters push above and beyond to overcome their circumstances. If you love interesting, dynamic characters, unique plotlines, and sitting on the edge of your seat from the excitment then these are definitley the shows for you. Highly recommend.

This two anime, although they have different settings, they have so many simillarities: people behind walls not knowing what's out there, living in a isolated society, both are fantasy, horror, mystery genres.

Just the first episode is so much alike: people living their normal lives and in the ending of the episode that normal routine they have completely changes because of -----(and spoilers alert for the first episode of the two anime)------ a shocking life-changing revelation and death of a loved one.

Both animes are worth watching if you're a fan of these genres of anime

Starra Starra says...

Both series deal with three children trying to uncover the truths of their worlds and the dark unpredictabilities that come with that task. Each group must overcome the harsh and myserious natures of reality to achieve their dreams, and suffer the pain of losing loved ones in the process.

The world building, although done at a different pace, is similar. And the overarching themes (entrapment/freedom, the reason why humans are being caged like animals and what, exactly, it is that makes one human in the first place) overlap.

Emma and Eren also have similar qualities in that they want to save everyone, and are never willing to abandon their friends, no matter how dangerous the situation gets.

pretystarami pretystarami says...

Both of them are so similar because they both have two boys and one girl as the main characters that are trying to get out of the walls and want to escape from Monsters

AnimePixel AnimePixel says...

The main gist and commonality of the two animes are about people being confined into one place, with a wall to ensure they don't escape. The main characters try to find the truth of the outside world and learn the real reason why they are walled in. Both animes have living threats outside of the walls that can bring death to their population. The main three kids try to escape to the outside world, try to fight back the enemies alongside friends to protect the people who need to be saved. The Promised Neverland is a story where three kids that grew up in a place that's supposed to be an "orphanage" had found out what the "orphanage" is really not as happy and peaceful as it seems and made plans for all the kids to escape. While doing so, they overcome arguments, differences, and their own fear of what the future holds. Attack on Titan is about three childhood friends who one; aim to slaughter all titans in the world, two; be able to go outside, and three; protect the population. While doing so, they discover the secret of the titans and of themselves. In my opinion, I feel that Attack on Titan gives watchers more thrill, sophistication, and complexity, The Promised Neverland is more of a show for hopeful vibes and great determination than thrill or sophistication. Attack on Titan I feel is more for an older group of individuals versus The Promised Neverland that mainly aims for younger kids but some, like me, enjoy both. I do highly recommend for both sides as both animes are wonderful works of art and very well made pieces.

  2. Adventurous Facade: Both series adopt this adventurous facade at a certain point, allowing fans to get a general idea of their distinct worlds.
  3. Survival Theme: Both series have a survival theme where the characters are trying to survive in a hostile environment.

Differences:

  1. Setting & Plot: Attack on Titan revolves around teenagers and young adults in an action-horror series where humans live inside large towns surrounded by giant stone walls to protect them from terrifying humanoid creatures called Titans. On the other hand, The Promised Neverland is a fantastical, psychological thriller that revolves around children in an orphanage that is later revealed to be a farm, meant to raise human children and sell them to demons to consume.
  2. Main Characters are teenagers in attack on titan while in promised neverland ,the Main characters are kids

Reasons you might like Knights of Sidonia...

Taek Taek says...

Both shows are set in a dystopian world with an ancient threat lurking at the fringes of mankind, and both shows have technology that has progressed in such a way to deal with this threat, mecha in Sidonia, and the three-dimensional manouver device in AoT.

AoT seems to have a much stronger horror theme than Sidonia so far, but I believe anyone who has watched one, will get some enjoyment from the other.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both series are rather dystopic, telling the tale of the remnants of humanity living in confined spaces, ever on the lookout for the non-human threat that reduced it to such a state.

And of course, the threat that has not been sighted for so long finally returns, at it is now to take up arms against it and defend the last outpost of the humans in a desperate struggle!

While Sidonia is a futuristic mecha show, and AoT takes place in some fantasy land with rather advanced contraptions, they both have a very similar feel to them due to the plot and focus on military characters. They are also rather gritty and full of action, so if you want something similar, do check the other one out.

murcam murcam says...

Sindonia No Kishi is basically Attack on Space. Giant beings of unknown origin and intelligence have wiped out most humanity creating need for them to adapt. Although so far I think that Sidonia is better and the Gauna are significantly creepier and more threatening. If you like one you'll probably like the other... unless you aren't into mechs.

Yol Yol says...

They've both got the "unnatural force threatening mankind" theme going. They both have intense battle scenes, although one may not be used to the animation in SnK. They share the main protagonist being sort of an underdog, yet possesing some quality that brings him to fame. All in all, if you like one, you'll probably like the other.

-Happy Watching

sothis sothis says...

It's crazy to me that more people haven't recommended this pair. Saying SNK and Titan are similar is the understatement of the year - a straggling subsection of humanity tries to defend itself against a giant, badass enemy that indiscriminately annihilates them, with plenty of horror, gore, and tense moments. The setting (fantasy vs futuristic) and animation (awesome vs kind of bad CG) are the only two things that set these apart.

There is zero reason you wouldn't like one if you liked the other.

ZetsubouKaiji ZetsubouKaiji says...

Humanity has been pushed to the brink of destruction by overwhelming forces they don't understand. Forced to retreat into tiny refuges with limited suppies humanity must struggle to survive their new situation. However, these refuges only provide temporary safety as it isn't long before the threats attack these last bastions of humanity. Will humanity be able to overcome these threats or are they doomed to a painful slow extinction?

Sindonia no Kishi and Attack on Titan have almost the same plot outline. The difference comes in the setting with Attack on Titan taking a medieval setting with a touch of steampunk and Sidonia being a science fiction series. Each show has it's own set of technology with Sidonia including mechs and space combat.

Attack on Titan is hands down the better of these two shows. It has better characters, better pacing and a more interesting story. Knights of Sidonia stumbles on just about all these fronts, but if you like stories that push the characters to the brink of despair then try either of these titles.

Brad Brad says...

A mysterious and overwhelmingly powerful enemy pushes mankind to the brink of extinction, forcing them to retreat into small, enclosed communities in order to survive. But the status quo doesn't last for long, and humanity is backed into a corner and forced to retaliate to protect their future.

The plot in each is pretty much as close asd two shows can get, the only major difference being AoT's medieval setting when compared to Sidonia's sci-fi space setting.

AoT is the better of the two shows by a long shot, but they are so similar that fans of one should definitely check the other out.

ZEROibis ZEROibis says...

Bolth shows are about survivors of humanity fighting against an ememy that has nearly destroyed them. Main character in bolth is different from everyone else and is like a specal weapon to defeat the enemy. In bolth cases the goverment is covering up much of the history of humanity and of the true origins of their civilization. Lastly bolth have great epic battles and exciting action.

snivets snivets says...

Sidonia no Kishi and Attack on Titan both had me on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out if the characters will survive or not. If you like a show where the human race is threatened with extinction by big, bad non-human creatures, then both of these will be right up your alley. Liked one? Be sure to check out the other!

Swerto Swerto says...

Both revolve around some overpowered main character being the only one who can stop this ancient supernatural threat that has plagued humanity for longer than recorded history. Both are superviolent and have many main characters die throughout them. Both have great dubs, great action, and a dark setting. Knights of Sidonia takes place in space in a very battlestar galactica fashion.

Attack on Titan takes place in a fantasy kingdom.

Great survival animes, Fighting giant creatures (titans in Attack on Titan,Gauna in Knights of Sindonia) with advanced weapons (3D gear in AoT and mecha in KoS)

Red4life Red4life says...

The premise is very similar for both shows. Humanity on the brink of extinction with a kid doing the whole "chosen one thing". Attack on Titan, however, is a bit lighter in story and mood than Sidonia no Kishi which I find darker. So far I have to say I prefer the latter's story a bit more (maybe I'm more into mechas). However, being Sidonia no Kishi a CG anime, I have to say that it's not my favourite style. It's not bad...but it's not the same thing as hand drawn anime. Still, highly recommend both shows (and manga)!

chillst1 chillst1 says...

They basically have the same premise except in one mobile suits are used and in the other assisted grappeling devices are used.

Saincev Saincev says...

Humanity is brought to the brink of extinction by another "creature" who has a specifc weak point. Humanity must come up with a creative way to defeat said creatures in order to survive. Pretty much the plot of AoT and KoS in a nutshell. The MC in both stories have something special about them that allows them to combat the threat. Comrades die, yet there is no time to Mourn and the fight must go on.

So where's the difference? Where AoT has Harpoon Jetpacks and Blades, KoS uses Mechs with Particle Beams and Spears. AoT takes place on Earth and is Primarily using technology from Middle Ages. KoS takes place in the far future aboard a Giant Generation Ship, Sidona. Titans use brute strength to kill. Gaunas (from KoS) have more "sophisticated" methods.

Overall, if you enjoyed the plot of AoT and the feel of the envrionment, KoS is a great subsitute.

wodemaya wodemaya says...

Humanity is cornered by threatening creatures that just so happen to like attacking humans. Humans must gather and create weapons and go out in groups to kill said creatures.

KoS is futuristic with Mechs powered by Hyggs Particles, while AoT has a more medieval setting with 3DMG. The protagonists differ a lot in terms of personality, but they both become leading forces on the battlefield.

Gabbygabby21 Gabbygabby21 says...

Knights of Sidonia is mostly the same execpt they are fighting in space. They both have a future where the entire world lives in one place because of an "alien" creature.

mindlord0013 mindlord0013 says...

Knights of Sidonia and Attack on Titan have a number of similarities. The main difference between the two is the setting. In both series, humanity has been pushed back by a mysterious, bloodthirsty race that sometimes take a humanoid form in shape, if not intelligence. Humanity has to live in a sanctuary, and sometimes drastic measures have to be taken to save the greater number of lives at the cost of a few.The combat is very similar in both shows, fast paced and visually stunning. Neither show glosses over the fact that casulaties are inevitable in these situations, and sometimes characters are killed because of stupid little mistakes - something that is inevitbale in wars against bloodthirsty killing machines. Knights of Sidonia has less gore than Attack on Titan, and appears to be more restrained with its use of graphic violence for shock value - something I feel Attack on Titan has no qualms about. The monsters in each series are equally grotesque in their own rights, though Attack on Titan takes the prize for having a more scary monster (though Knights of Sidonia's monsters are equally as deadly, if not more so.)The main difference between the two shows are the settings and themes. Knights of Sidonia is a sci-fi show, set on a colony ship, with characters piloting mechs to fight an alien species known as gauran (a highly intelligent, giant, shape-shifting species). Attack on Titan is a fantasy show, with the characters using contraptions that basically make them spider-man with swords, fighting against the titular titans - giant humanoid creatures that revel in eating humans. Both shows tend to have themes exploring the idea of a blurred line between humanity and monters, but go about it in different ways. Attack on Titan tends to revolve around greed, gluttony and selfishness vs. the want to protect others, kinship, and selflessness. Knights of Sidonia focuses on the literal, genetic differences between humans and "monsters", as well as the personalities and psychology of particular characters. It also delves into the issue of immortality and extreme longevity, and the philosophical issues that that brings when there are people in a position of power that are also extremely long-lived.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Humanity lives in a bubble, terrified of creatures beyond human understanding. And yet, they send the young and  virile members of society out into the void to gather information. That's the main conflict of both anime. And while one is set in space and the other is set in pseudo-Europe, they share a lot in common.

murder0 murder0 says...

Similar to attack on titan where you follow one character that is for some strange reason way more special than everyone else and throughout the series seems to grow in strength. (That’s the basic explanation on why you'd like it)... They both have a really good story line and an excellent character development only problem is the style of the animation might throw u off.

azanimefan azanimefan says...

If you liked Berserk you might like Attack on Titan.  Both anime are in fantasy settings featuring swords and battles.  Both are dramatic with plenty of blood and guts.  Both are action shows with dark themes.

VivisQueen VivisQueen says...

In both Berserk and Shingeki no Kyojin, we have brutal fantasy worlds where humans are at the mercy of terrifying creatures. And the hero is a jaded kind of soul who has suffered a lot but possesses a grim determination. The thing about these shows is, while violent, their worlds are also stunningly developed. And the conflicts are just intense. Not to mention the characters are superlative, drawing you in with their personal struggles and and the nuances in their personalities. As a result, getting absorbed in their respective plots is an exhilerating experience. It is not possible to say which is a better series, just that if you love one, you will be an instant fan of the other.

Brad Brad says...

Both these series feature a well developed, interesting fantasy setting filled with great characters who all have their own personal and collective struggles. Both series also involve mankind fighting to survive against terrifying enemies. Violence is a strong theme in both, with Shingeki no Kyojin perhaps being more flashy than Berserk, but both can be brutal when required. The intensity that both series exude is one of their best features, and one that makes episodes thrilling to watch. Fans of one should give the other a try, it's unlikely you will be disappointed.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both series are grim and gritty anime that take place in dark fantasy worlds where human lives are easily ended. There's a lot of focus on combat yet also on character development, but most importantly, there is a rather oppresive and dark mood throughout both that makes me do this rec.

Naga Naga says...

Set in dark, gritty medieval time, both of this series feature some well executed survival against their ferocious enemies. With the major spotlight in combat, both shows deliver some amazing action scenes and both tend to be violent along the way. There’s also a very dark mood that complements both shows greatly, and because of that, I’d say that you probably won’t find anything that matches more like these two do.

If you’re a fan of one, do check the other. You won’t be disappointed.

Both have a similar level of brutality, and are on a similar level of awesomeness. But definately check out the new Berserk Golden Age Arc Movies, they are basically the Berserk series redone, but a bit closer to the manga interpretation, and with beautiful animation. Shingeki No Kyojin is basically the pinnacle of quality for animation and brutality, but for an older series, Berserk is definately a good watch!

Both Anime tell a story of facing insurmountable odds, terrible loss (although in the early parts of Berserk are, the protagonists are generally victorious, and the tragedy doesn't happen until the very end).

Both Anime feature horrific, larger then life, evil monsters, all though again, they don't really feature prominently until the end of the anime in Berserk.

Both Anime feature a large build up to the ultimate betrayal.

Both Anime subtly touch on social issues such as sexuality.

Could be considered a rip off, but I enjoyed it because of the similarities.

Black Bullet has Giant bug-things (Gastrea) that are attacking the humans who are very weak in comparison. Lots of death too. Sadness.

Attack on Titan has giant humanoids that attack humans. Lots of death. Sadness.

Black Bullet shares the same "siege" feel as Attack on Titan.

In both, the main character has a "secret weapon".

The whole concept in these two anime are pretty similar both conatin a war between humans and another species they hardly know about. Don't let that make you believe they aren't good anime, because the violent touch is what adds up to the epicness of it all! Both a 9.5/10 in my book!

Both of these include the main character being a boy who has been thrown into a world of chaos and death for causes unknown. If you like the way one throws you into a world of emotional uncertainty and you never know what to expect (although in Attack on Titan its a little more unexpected) then you will certainly enjoy the other.

While I can't list all my reason because it would contain spoilers, these shows are very much alike in genre and the repective tags you would assign to them. They both have a blood and gore factor that is unique unto itself. Attack on Titan and Deadman Wonderland have different settings and circumstances that bring plot points into place but both share traumatizing experiences for the main character that, once past those events, hardens and strengthens the protagonist.

the things that make both Attack on Titan and Deadman Wonderland awesome are:horrific truths, massive and deep plotlines, perfectly balanced between realistic and make believe, lovable chartacters, twisted and larger than life bad guys.there is so much to love in both of these animes

Both series have a similer feel (despirate and scary) where the main character has no choice where they are and must fight to stay alive. Both shows have their main character determined to get out and are supported by their allies, all trying to get out alive, weather it be Deadman Wonderland or the Walled Civilization.

angelyrical angelyrical says...

The atmosphere of the two animes are rather similar and they both portray a rather cynical view on human nature. Both take place in a dystopian setting where the terror is real and the characters have to fight for their lives, fight for what they belive in. Both are heart-rendingly realistic and are truly awesome to watch.

HiddenNugget HiddenNugget says...

Both of these feature a young boy thrown into a world of chaos and fear, battling for their life while fighting against the corrupt ruling classes.

Both of these include the main character being a boy who has been thrown into a world of chaos and death, and has to make life or death decisions. Very gory anime not for the faint hearted, and fight for what they believe in.

Gavia Gavia says...

Both are dark action series with strong themes of futility and cynisism. In both shows the main characters are fighting to live free in the world they inhabit, when they aren't fighting simply to stay alive.

I agree with the above comments on the comparisson of Attack on Titan and Deadman Wonderland. I would say the bigger difference in both anime is the pace they present their epeisodes. If you like one I'm sure you'll love the other.

sai89 sai89 says...

The level of action is more or less the same, and the history make us watch the main character growth.

NewAgeOtaku NewAgeOtaku says...

I agree because you can find the same feeling of being overwhelmed by a crushing enemy. The situation in both anime is bad from start and it leaves you wondering where it can go from there

because they are both about  Boys what have secret power and when they find it  their whole life change

Attack on Titan revolves around monsters while Deadman Wonderland revolves around the humans that are monsters. They have a dark yet interesting way of telling and showing things and both a must watch.

Parasyte -the maxim-

In secret, alien parasites drift downwards toward Earth. Their directive: to take control of a human body and thrive in secret. When a parasite attempts to take over Shinji, an ordinary high school student, he stops it in his arm to save his mind. With the strange power of amorphous muscle, the curious parasite strikes an uneasy truce with Shinji: it will keep him alive and strong so that it may continue living, and will help protect him from the other parasites that might not take kindly to Shinji's mind still actively working. Can Shinji gain the courage to face the parasites and protect humanity? And would it even make a difference if he did?

Both carry a whole lot of action, and violence!! Both also have characters that make you fall for the anime :) (Personally Attack on Titan seems to have the advantage in character outlines :P)

Both series revolve largely around action, gore/violence, mystery, and humanoid monsters! What's not to love?

KashiiAlcuin KashiiAlcuin says...

Both are gore filled... so if you like the gory... this is for you

MC have similarities:

-completely change after death of family member

These are both popular series with a dark tone, a troubled teenaged protagonist dealing with the loss of his mother, and monsters that consume humans but might be more complicated than it first seems. Lots of violence and elements of horror in both of these, but also tons of action. I think it's pretty likely there's already a lot of crossover between fans of both shows, so if you like one, you should definitely check out the other.

Michajel Michajel says...

Young boy.

Some scary monsters want to erase humanity.

They kill boy's mother.

"I want to kill them all!"

He's weak.

He trains and gains some power.

"I am one of them, shit."

PandaBear87 PandaBear87 says...

Very similar main characters regarding their development and backstory.  Both: lose mother to scary beings (aliens/titans), start out as weaklings but train to become stronger, become one of the enemy, want to kill them all to save the world/avenge mother's death.

Hutai Hutai says...

Both are dark, full of action, great soundtracks, story and character development. Both MC's changes after the biggest enemy of humanity kills their relative. They get supernatural powers that helps them to get stronger and fight, yet sometimes they forget who they really are.

Both are extremely gritty adapatations of their separate manga and they both show the slow descent of humanity into madness as we toy with what really is "human". They both have extremely intense action scenes and they are both filled to the brim with gore. Perfect example of two anime showing the same themes, elements and most importantly, they both share that sense of curiosity that makes you want to delve deeper into their respective universes as well as continue watching.

Lizardbitch Lizardbitch says...

Gorey with monsters and crazy plots between monsters and humans and monsters vs. monsters. Takes a look at the negatives and positives of both humans and monsters and gives you perspectives of both sides. Both have crazy villains and awesome main characters that grow and change as the series progresses.

It's awesome, they both have many similar qualities in the genre and it's just worth watching in general.

Attack on Titan drew me in. It was seriously one of the best animes I've ever watched. The flow drags you in, and the characters are extremely relatable. I totally consider this as one of my favorite animes, and I recommend it completely.

AOT and parasyte both get at that apocalyptic feeling where the human race has little chance of making it. But the other aspect of them that I see a lot of overlap in is the way the protagonist has to navigate the world, realizing that things and people aren't what they seem. AOT is stronger story wise not my opinion, but parasyte definitely threw me for some unexpected loops. Both question what humanity even is. And despite having similar themes that are both distinctly different from one another, parasyte doesn't feel like a ripoff or anything like that.
