Just want to start by saying that this is a damn good show if my experience is anything to go by. It does have its downfalls, but out of everything I’ve watched this year, Assassination Classroom is one of the ones I enjoyed the most. With a story that’s intriguing from the outset and a rather unique and (mostly) loveable set of characters, it was hard for me not to love this show. It kept showing up on Crunchyroll and, for the most part, never stood out to me at all until I read the description. Kill their teacher by the end of the year? Sounds violent and exciting. I’m in.

I haven’t seen any other ideas much like this one. It’s like a cross between a sci-fi, comedy and a school-life series all blended into one and it totally works. I’m not giving the story a 9 or a 10 because the plot grew a little lacklustre at some points, but on the whole it was very good and entertaining, and overall a lot of fun to watch. While it does have its cliche moments that anyone can find in about 90% of anime, it’s just so goddamn enjoyable that I really don’t think I can complain, and what’s the whole purpose of anime? To entertain and tell stories. I won’t go as far as to state that the story is amazing, but I think it’s safe to say that it’s creative, and obviously had a fair bit of imagination put into it to make it work. It just seemed to have a touch of something new to it; there was a certain vibe to it that stood out to me.

Admittedly, there were a few episodes that, to me, were clearly filler. I’ll put it shortly: two or three episodes were just plain boring and had no link to the story whatsoever, and this kind of put me off, albeit only temporarily. Aside from this, the plot is great, and generally very enjoyable to watch, as well as easy to follow.

I absolutely love the characters. Our protagonist is, for once, actually a great protagonist. He - as well as most of the other characters - piqued my interest right from the outset. Yes, I did mistake him for a girl, but as a character he’s excellent. They all have the perfect balance between being relatable and realistic and being, well, frightening. They’re all so keen and dedicated and skilled and I just love them. I will admit that there did seem to be a few too many minor characters though, who could have undergone a little more development or elaboration, but I suppose I can’t comment on this much because it has more than one season.

10/10 for the animation, easily. Some of the best animation I’ve seen to date. It’s so pretty and crisp and professional. The excellent visuals were the first thing I noticed when I began watching Assassination Classroom, and that’s saying something considering I only really notice animation when it’s either terrible or outstanding. While atypical hair colours (like people having naturally blue, green, pink hair etc.) usually put me off, for this series it seemed to work. The art style, the detail, everything is perfect.

The sound effects and soundtrack are pretty good. I disliked the first opening theme a little at first but it soon grew on me and by the end of the series, I really liked them both. Something about the opening themes was hilarious and ironic considering the world will literally end if they don’t kill this monster and here they are celebrating as if something great has happened. The background OST in general was pretty great too, and very memorable, which says a lot considering I hardly ever even notice when shows try hard in the sound department. Basically, above average for sound from my experience.

Conclusively, Assassination Classroom was a great experience for me, and extremely enjoyable at that. It’s your average school life series with a not-so-average twist that makes for a very interesting series. I’ve never actually seen anything like it and I found it to be a breath of fresh air. Would definitely recommend for people who enjoy anime with elements of science fiction but can’t stand more complicated series like Psycho Pass because Assassination Classroom is the total opposite of that.

𝐑𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖  >>>  The world is in peril and the enemy just so happens to be your sensei and you have until the end of the school year to assassinate him. That might sound easy enough, right?

"Assassination Classroom" follows a group of high school students who are tasked in assassinating a tentacle creature who destroyed the moon and that said creature just so happens to be their homeroom teacher. The students later give him the name Kuro-sensei and he is assigned to the E class of an illustrious high school. The students are given training by either a JSPF member or some other military affiliation in Japan, Mr. Karasuma. They are also assigned a language teacher Ms. Irina Jelavic, whom the students called "Professor Bitch". The students not only have to deal with school work but also find a way to eliminate Kuro-sensei before the school year is over. There is also a subplot about the school hierarchy being corrupted and unfair for anyone to succeed.

This is what Assassination Classroom ultimately revolves around; it speaks about those. Frustrations that we had as high school students, and acts as a coming of age story of sorts about the characters in the show.

The story isn't believable in the slightest and acts as device to advance its themes and characters, which is very effective. The story instead mainly focuses on the comedic aspects between the students and Koro-sensei, while also balancing out the various character dynamics between not only Koro and the students, but even the students among one another.

This works extremely well, and the character interactions are a great deal of fun to watch. The contrast between the various characters and how they see studying, their love for various things and Koro-sensei is interesting and makes their characterization all the better.

The artwork is smooth and distinct and never drops in quality from episode to episode. The animation quality is pleasant and extremely colorful to look at, though the animation and the way the characters are presented in the opening theme leaves a lot to be desired.

Overall, "Assassination Classroom" is a very enjoyable show that unfortunately isn't as balanced as it could have been and its comedy being rather inconsistent, especially in the beginning of the show. Those who can get past that will find a likeable cast of characters, some great comedy and a very nostalgia-feeling show (if that's even a thing), so while the show isn't for everyone it certainly is something you can check out if that strikes your fancy.

"Assassination Classroom" first season is an anime that manages to blend humor, action, and heartfelt moments with a surprisingly effective touch. The premise is as bizarre as it is compelling: a class of underachieving students is tasked with assassinating their teacher, Koro-sensei, a super-powered octopus-like being who has threatened to destroy the Earth. Despite the dark undertone of their mission, Koro-sensei proves to be the best teacher they've ever had, offering both academic lessons and life teachings.

Top of the Class:

  • Character Development: One of the series' strongest suits is its focus on character development. Each student in Class 3-E has their own backstory and challenges, which are explored and addressed throughout the season. Watching these so-called "misfits" grow under Koro-sensei's guidance is both inspiring and a significant driver of the narrative.
  • Koro-sensei: The heart and soul of "Assassination Classroom," Koro-sensei is a fascinating paradox. Despite his monstrous appearance and alarming capabilities, his dedication to his students and his quirky teaching methods make him one of the most endearing characters in anime. His complex character keeps viewers guessing his true intentions and the backstory that led him to Class 3-E.
  • Blend of Genres: The series masterfully mixes genres, combining elements of comedy, action, and drama in a way that feels seamless. The comedic timing is spot-on, the action sequences are engaging and well-animated, and the emotional beats hit harder than expected, given the series’ outlandish premise.

Areas for Improvement:

  • Pacing Variations: While generally well-paced, there are moments when the series seems to slow down, especially during some of the middle episodes where the focus shifts to less central characters or subplots. However, these moments are often meaningful for character development, even if they momentarily detract from the main narrative.
  • Balancing Act: With such a large cast, not all students receive equal attention or development. While the series does an admirable job of giving many students their moment in the spotlight, some viewers might find themselves wishing for more depth or backstory for certain characters.

Special Mentions:

  • Life Lessons: Beyond the assassination attempts and comedic antics, "Assassination Classroom" is rich in life lessons and themes of perseverance, friendship, and the value of education. The series doesn't shy away from addressing serious issues like bullying, family problems, and self-esteem, making it unexpectedly poignant.
  • Visuals and Soundtrack: The animation is bright, colorful, and fits the tone of the series well. Action scenes are fluid and dynamic, showcasing the abilities of both Koro-sensei and the students. The soundtrack complements the series’ mood shifts, enhancing both the thrilling and tender moments.

Overall: "Assassination Classroom" first season is a standout anime that defies easy categorization, thanks to its unique premise and the skillful blending of humor, heart, and suspense. Koro-sensei's unconventional classroom becomes the setting for much more than just assassination attempts; it's a place where life’s important lessons are taught and learned. The series not only entertains but also resonates on a deeper level, making it a must-watch for those seeking a show with a perfect balance of laughter, action, and emotional depth. Despite some minor pacing issues and the challenge of juggling a large cast, "Assassination Classroom" secures its place at the top of the class for its inventive storytelling and memorable characters.
