The third season of Ascendance of a Bookworm is over after ten episodes!?!  Really?  Shocker!

But, as the premise goes,  those three years seem to  develop Myne's ever-changing situation smoothly.  Year one (2019; 14 episodes):  A tragically killed librarian reincarnates as a young girl in a warm loving family of medieval background.  As a commoner, the shrewd Myne rises to the ranks of the merchant class, introducing innovations which make her influential.  Year two (2020; 12 episodes):  Myne rises from the merchant class to the ecclesiastical.  Her mana-power gives her the role of young priestess, and Myne actually gains enemies.  Year three (2022; 10 episodes):  Having so many responsibilities leads to intrigues with afore-mentioned enemies, including the high priest.  Only adoption into the nobility can save the girl who dearly loves her commoner family.  Being the lord's adopted child has certain advantages, hence year four (next week, puleeeeeze!).  Bring it!

The theme of literacy has always been an under-current in the AofB franchise.  The creation of paper, the improvement of ink, the publication of picture books, just shows that Myne has a plan to make reading more than a perk of the noble and ecclesiastical classes.  The closing theme is a brief history of print media, including Gutenberg's press and computer assisted publication..  The edginess of Ascendance of Bookworm is the backlash against Myne, the conspiracy to prevent the key to knowledge gained via reading from falling into the hands of the lower classes.  And this is being contested by Myne, hardly ten years old.

The animation has been honed with each season.  The highlight of the season is the CGI presentation of Myne dissolving into flat animation, truly a keen effect.  It's almost symbolic of the backwardness with which Myne has to contend with every episode.  The music is standard, nothing too sensational.  But it does the job

While capable with her super level of mana, Myne has to deal with extremely calculating types who would love to remove the little reformer.  The plot tries not to get too complicated, but politics can pull the meanest tricks.  Becoming connected with the most powerful lord in the region lends a wrinkle to the next season, but what of Gunther, Eva, Tuli, and the new addition Kamil?  As complex as Myne's life is becoming, perhaps a little simplicity is the right direction.

How shall season four (or any future AofB project) go?

This series has continued to get even worse, this encompasses the previous 2 parts as well. The very common and often average at best general premise of "I was a NEET/shut in(or close enough) to I'm OP in this new world but I still just am going to try and live my previous lifestyle" is used and happens to be a primary reason why the show gets worse the longer it goes. It tries to fool you into believing that Main is just going to try and read/make books, meanwhile it progressively has less and less of the "here's how I'm going to attempt to get/make materials for scribing. Which was a bit stupid in the first place based on the fact that they're assuming materials in a different realm of existence would be exactly the same or close enough that every type of creation: food, beauty products, clothing... whatever it may be is able to be replicated from her previous IRL information. Of course as stated it strays from the base concept of "let's just try and read" to I'm OP magical girl pretty early on but then still makes that boring as possible. It feels confusing whether or not it's trying to be partially educational about the history of evolution of recording documents because it doesn't go into much depth on them but feels the need to present an unnecessarily long rant about them ie the printing press in this season.

There may not be a single character that isn't excessively annoying. That's really all that needs to be said about the characters tbh. They really just all kind of suck hard. Main may have been an adult pre series storyline, but she's not even 10 in season 3s beginning, proceeds to mention how '"she wouldn't mind being seen in the underwear her family made her." So randomly horny as a physical literal child but kind of mentioned how she didn't really have interest in physical/sexual connections or would rather be reading than anything else in her previous life pretty early in the first season.

The animation is very pretty, however a good bit of it is pretty lazily animated as well.

I enjoyed seasons 1 and 2, I wouldn't say they were the best of the best, but they were very enjoyable and unique as far as isekai go (which is a rarity).

However I was expecting some character development besides her getting healthier.

We're talking about a grown woman here, a mentally grown woman that has been put in the body of a child..

I'm not sure there is anything inherently wrong with the story but it was her annoyingly spineless character that just grinded my gears to no end.

As I said before, she is a grown woman mentally, not only that she is also incredibly smart and posesses knowledge that could topple that world, she also seems to be strong enough to beat basically anyone in that world, no, she might even be strong enough to defeat entire armies, yet all she ever does is let people push her around.

She lets anyone push her around to any extent they want, the only time she doesn't is when there is a business deal involved, but any time it truly counts she just ends up letting everything she cares about be taken from her (trying not to spoil things here).

She has both power and knowledge to seemingly rival the gods in their world and she ends up doing absolutely nothing with it, 0.. To make matters worse some dude shows up that lied to her about everything and has apparently been turning a blind eye to his uncle torturing, exploiting and starving (even suggested molesting), for years and years, but only makes an exception when some special kids gets involved, and he is somehow painted as the good guy.

They better start fixing some sh*te in season 4 or I'm dropping this thing

As the story stands right now, her family would've been better off had she just died

This is definitely my favorite Isekai/Slice of Life anime! Love the growth of characters, the emotional scenes and the wonderfully relaxing intro song for season 3. The story is intriguing from season 1 and it does get a bit slow in season 3 but I'm certain that season 4 will be amazing because the ending of season 3 looked promising. Can't wait to see Myne grow into an even more powerful book-worm!
