The same person (Masamune Shirow) wrote the manga that both Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell are based upon. If you liked one, chances are that you will like the other.

Both Appleseed and GITS were written by the same guy, and both feature a hot girl as the main character. I prefer the Major in GITS, but Deunan in Appleseed is cute in an 80s kind of way. Appleseed is a little lighter than GiTs, although both are at the pinnacle of animated storytelling

Merryberry Merryberry says...

Both of these anime explore the futuristic possiblity and to a certain extent the effects of cybernectic and biological engineering. Also, the artistic work drawn in both of them will feel familiar (they're both done by Shirow Masamune) and this helps you watch one with easy if you enjoyed the artwork. In addition both series portray the events of some sort of agenda that goes against the system.

RickGrimes RickGrimes says...

Both take place in the near future where cyborgs live in between humans

There is also alot of future technogly in work and some suspence and mystrey point in both.

Both also have decent amount of action.

Appleseed(funny name) focuses more on the action side of the story where as ghost in the shell focuses more on the mind-screwing side.

Jaimefm Jaimefm says...

The source material for both of these anime were written by the same person, so there are several similarities. Both deal with the interaction between humans and technology in the near future and the repercussions technological advances can have on the human race. If you like one I reccomend you give the other a try.

Appleseed and Dominion Tank Police share not only a similar city-of-the-furtue setting, but often the same kind of humor as well, the darker metropolis in Tank Police being ofset by a lighter tone than the slightly more serious Appleseed.

Ripzter Ripzter says...

Both animes have a similar feel to them. We have a futuristic world where the good guys are trying to preserve the peace. Both series are very good older animes that people should go and watch.

Tomte Tomte says...

Law enforcement in the future? Tank police or Special forces these two animes have female main characters and alot of android and futuristic stuff. They also have the same style of anime and story. Enjoy!

WM2K WM2K says...

The manga that Appleseed and Tank Police are based on are penned by Masumne Shirow, who also wrote Ghost in the Shell. These are both quite fun and feature cute munchkin girls in lead roles. Appleseed in particular is great. Both these shows demonstrate Shirow's preoccupation with mechanised warfare; the pen may be mightier than the sword, but in a tank you're king.

Bubblegum Crisis

Bubblegum Crisis

The year is 2032. Tokyo has been destroyed by a great earthquake and a new city, MegaTokyo, has risen from the ashes. Humans now live side-by-side with androids known as Boomers who perform many of the menial and laborious tasks that humans despise, but these artificial servants come with a price: they have a tendency to go haywire and attack those they were built to serve. The A.D. Police force was created to try and stop this menace, but its weapons can do little more than annoy the Boomers. Hope lies with the Knight Sabers, four young women with high-tech, armored suits and enough firepower to stop an army - but will it be enough to stop MegaTokyo's greatest threat?

With a similar future setting, Bubblegum Crisis has a more natural mix of action, serious themes and comedy, due partly to extra space available in a longer running anime.

Bubblegum Crash!

Bubblegum Crash!

One year has passed since the Crisis. People have come to believe that peace has been restored, but they were wrong - violence strikes the neighborhood once more and it all seems like a bad case of déja vu: the Boomers are back. But this time, there's something strange about the crime wave - highly advanced computer components are disappearing at the same time. The question is, who is the puppet master behind all this, what does he want, and what is his purpose?

The future cities in these two animes are similarly light and cheerful, but that's not going to slow down the action. Guns, robots and just the hint of moral dilemmas will keep you entertained in both Crash and Appleseed, just don't expect much more from either.

Appleseed and Tank SWAT, besides having Masamune Shirow at the helm, are both short, action-packed OVAs about a police mission gone wrong. Each has unusual characters (cyborgs and catgirls, oh my!) and a futuristic, somewhat cyberpunk feel. I didn't care much for either of these, but fans of one might enjoy the other.

Cyber City Oedo 808

Cyber City Oedo 808

In the year 2808, criminals are no longer just wasting space in prison cells. The Cyber Police have turned to using these “patrons” by giving them a choice. Their sentence, or to work with them to catch other criminals and knock some years off their sentence. But getting off easy isn't, as each criminal is fitted with booby trapped collar that operates on a 24 hour cycle, stopped ONLY if they capture their intended targets. As time runs out on each case, someone's head must roll... the target's, or their own!

Both of these older anime are set in a futuristic metropolis and both follow characters belonging to a police force of sort. If older action and cyberpunk anime are your thing then check these out.

Both set in post apocalyptic worlds in survivor cities using advanced animation with a blend of 2d and 3d animation. They involve the viewer in intricate conspirisies and thrilling action scenes whilst emercing them in the depth of character with a romantic twist.

Geobreeders

Geobreeders

Life's never boring in Kagura Total Security, especially not for Taba Yoichi; he's surrounded by an office full of trigger-happy, ass-kicking beauties! Specializing in the eradication of Phantom Cats, the team uses any means possible to trap these data-phantoms before they can take over important pieces of technology. However, when Kagura Total Security has one of its own kidnapped, it's up to gun-toting Umezaki, speed-driving Himehagi and fist-flinging Randou to bring her back!

Both shows come from a past time when animation wasn't at its best, and the storyline suffered as the writers deluge the screen with action. However, both Geobreeders and Appleseed have plenty of character driven plot and are actually quite enjoyable. Although a little predictable, and set in a world where the good guys are very good, and the bad guys verge on sociopaths, I think these two will definitely appeal to the same audience - one that enjoys older action anime.

Black Magic M-66

Black Magic M-66

The plane, she discovers, was carrying two top-secret prototype robots known as M-66. The problem? The mission of these programmed killers is to assassinate the granddaughter of their creator. If you're a fan of one Masamune Shirow adaptation chances are you'll enjoy watching another. Although not as engrossing as Appleseed, or especially Ghost in the Shell, M-66 offers the same violent cyborg action as the others while staying quite close to the source manga in both story and art. Newcomers (those that haven't been watching anime for decades) shouldn't overlook the classics, like Black Magic, that set the groundwork in the States for the tide (flood?) of titles available today - 30 years later!

Dorohedoro

Dorohedoro

The city of Hole is a desolate town where magic users go to test their powers by disfiguring or killing its people. After being cursed by a sorceror, Kaiman was left with the body of a man and the head of a lizard. Determined to break the spell over him, Kaiman works with his companion, Nikaido, to search for the one who made him this way. Unfortunately, with no memory as to his assailant’s identity there’s only one way for him to locate them: he must bite the head of any magic user he meets so that the man hidden inside him can determine if they are the culprit. As he bites, slashes and kills his way through the cruel magic users, will Kaiman be able to find out who the man in his mouth is, where the one he hunts is hiding and return to normal, while keeping the revengeful magic users at bay?

In many many ways these shows are completely different. The plots are different, the genres are different and the style of each is different.

BUT one thing is very familiar between them and that is the relationship of the two leads. If you love the dynamic of Deunan and Briareos then I think you'll love that similar dynamic between Nikaido and Kaiman. They aren't cut and paste in terms of personalities but similar enough that I believe fans of either of these shows could find the others appealing, especially if the main characters were a large draw for you in either show.
