But what neither teenager knows is that this innocent young girl is actually a killing machine -- an experiment gone terribly wrong -- and it is only a matter of time before the murderer in her awakens again...

While Angel Heart and Elfen Lied have drastically different premises, the characters and moral seem much the same.

Both Glass Heart and Lucy are remorseless killers, who by various circumstances find themselves in the care of good, decent people for the first time, and slowly learn to acclimate and deal with the feelings it inspires.

Angel Heart is slightly sweeter (and much longer) while Elfen Lied is very short, amazingly gory, and not for the faint of heart, but I found my feelings at the end to be very similar.

Both are centered around guns, assassins, suspense, & female protagonists. The overall feel of the 2 animes overlap quite a bit.

Well both may be different like angel heart having some comedic scenes and Elfen Lied having a gore scene every sec. However both of the main characters seem to be pretty much the same and the story template. At 1st both of the female characters at killing machines but then they are soon surrounded by caring people. However they do not trust the people so as a result it takes time for them to open up. Thus beginning the character's rebirth.

Gunslinger Girl is a series that is similar to Angel Heart in that it places its main characters in a position as young assassins. The difference between the series is that Angel Heart focuses more on one assassin who grows out of her "set to kill" status in humorous and sweet ways after she literally gains "another" heart. Gunslinger Girl focuses on a group of young assassins and the relationships with their "handlers". The girls are each explored in brief in terms of their pasts and how they came to be assassins.

Both series involve Mid-aged men who loses someone they loved. Then as their plots advance, both revolve around family love (more between father and daughter). They both give the same feeling. So if you like one, make sure to check out the other!
