After a long time of overlooking it, I finally watched Angel Beats. And Im glad I did. This is not one of the best, but certainly one of the most memorable series in existence. I do feel a bit disappointed, because with a bit more work and editing, this would be a true masterpiece, this way though its just good.

Story: I wont spoil anything. Its a pretty good story(somewhat reminds me of Death Parade). The forte of the whole thing is the character background stories. Those were just powerful. Truly powerful. The overall storyline is a bit chaotic, it feels thoughtless sometimes, but it still remain predictable. For example the whole point of this world the main characeters find themselves can be guessed easily. The funny parts of the series are actually funny, but they almost always overdo it. But to be fair, when they go overboard with the filler parts, they always redeem themselves with emotional background stories that will bring a tear to your eye. Could have been better, but is certainly memorable and gets the job done. 6.5/10

Animation: looks great. The character animation is not my favorite(eyes are too big for my taste), but overall I liked the animation very much. 8.5/10

Sounds: Holy shit! The music in this anime is just epic. THIS IS THE BEST SOUDNTRACK I HAVE EVER HEARD and its also very diverse. If nothing else, download the soundtrack! 10/10

Characters: Most of the secondary characters are shounen type and they dont work too well, most of them are either weak stereotypes or just simply annoying. They make fools out of themselves far too othen. The background stories are great and actually pretty realistic, also no matter how annoying they are, we somehow grow to like them. The main characters go through a lot of evolution to their benefit. 7/10

Overall: To say that this anime has its moments would be an understatement. It feels like they had great ideas, but wanted to create something that will impress a larger audience and sacrificed a huge part of the quality for that, so they created a hybrid shounen. I suggest watching it. You need the strenght to get through some filler parts, but its worth it. 7.2/10

How I watched it: As it came out subbed (720p), dubbed on Blu-ray (1080i)

Story:

Angel Beats is one of those series that was a blast to watch (mostly) but tried to do to much in too little time. It wants to be a comedy, action, drama, romance and even throw in some parody and music elements for good measure. It does them individually well except it doesn't have the time to develop them properly except for the comedic elements. The whole show has a rushed vibe to it and the serious moments feel out of place because of it as it brings the show to a sudden melodramatic halt, sometimes out of nowhere. If it was longer, say 24 episodes, it really could have shined but as is its merely above-average and dissapointing.

Animation:

Minor quibbles over the look of the eyes, PA Works knocked this out of the park. The colours compared to other shows is almost the difference between LCD and OLED; its just bright saturated heaven. Detail and fluidtiy is stellar as well and maybe the best part is its HD native so it fully takes advantage of the picture quality enhancements blu-ray offers. From my (limited) experience with anime on blu-ray the only thing that tops Angel Beats is the Evangelion Rebuild franchaise. Not bad for a seasonal TV anime that came out in 2010.

Sound:

Music- OP is download worthy but ED is somewhat forgettable sad and slow stuff thats the norm for endings it seems. OST is up to par with previous key anime, which is to say awesome.

Sub vs Dub: Both excellent, although I felt the dub was better for a relaxed funny watch (partly the casting/direction, partly no reading) the sub is the "Definitive" version that you should watch if you have no preference either way. The dramatic sequences are acted much better and the dub kinda messed up Yuri, TK and Shiina (why would you dub TK D:). Gay Nazi guy was better though so there is that.

Characters:

Theres too many of them but theres only one bad one (previously mentioned gay nazi) so the lack of depth doesn't hurt that much. I'll be honest; the best characters are not the main characters nor do they have the best moments of the series. Angel Beats is at its best when its doing gags that play to the shallow and hilaurous nature of the show.

TL;DR TK FTW

Overall:

The show is a near must-watch thats only hampered by a weak ending and rushed story that tried to do to much.

Blu-ray comes on 2 discs with bare minimum packaging and extras. You get the show, Dual audio + english subs, OVA (but not epilogue short) and textless OP/ED. Retial is $70 but you can find it for approx. $50. I'm a cheap bastard so I'll leave it up to you if thats worth it (I got my copy for $28 during a black friday/holiday sale).

At first i wasnt so sure but this turned out to be one of my all time favorites! the characters were well developed and hilarious. the plot was interesting and different and was also deeper than i thought it was going to turn out to be.i was laughing then crying (not ashamed to say that haha) throughout the whole thing. Each character had his or her own way of adding a great addition to their group of "morons" and i couldnt help but love every single one of them..im usually very picky and analytical of anime but this one drew me in and i just couldnt stop watching! i gave in a 9 out of ten just because i thouht the last episode was a little slow even though i teared up a little.

so i deffff advise everyone to see this.. its for guy and girls

its got loads of ADVENTURE.COMODY.GORE.ROMANCE.SPORTS.GREAT MUSIC. EXCELENT ART. WONDERFUL STORY LINE. HOT CHICKS(FOR THE GUYS) HOT GUYS (FOR THE GIRLS) AND MANY TWISTS AND TURNS THAT WILL MAKE YOU WANTING MOREMOREMORE!

Yea... so watch it!!!!!!!

This is one AMAZING anime and it is #2 on my list of favorites! ( Second only to Clannad and After Story)

Angel Beats! is hilarious, action-packed, and very sad and touching in certain parts of the story. If you liked Clannad but wanted a bit more action, this is the right anime for you! If you liked Clannad and was fine with it, you should still watch this anime!

Like Clannad, Air, and Kanon, Angel Beats! has other arcs in the story containing stories about the characters' pasts and it allows you to grow closer to the characters. You can get easily attached to this anime and the ending will definitely leave you wanting a second season! All I have to say is that you should grab a pack of tissues for this anime because some parts are quite touching, but it is mostly full of action and comedy!

Wish you a happy Watching!
