Decided to rewatch Aragne before commenting on this title, since a big part of the dissatisfaction I felt towards this movie is because of its connection to the previous entry, but I do believe that even without a previous work to compare this to, this would be an unsatisfactory experience.

When I watched Aragne a year or so ago, what turned me off of it was the lack of a proper resolution, but I thought that the movie itself was good. There wasn’t much of a plot but at least it gave the illusion of one. The animation wasn’t spectacular and it had its flaws, but I thought they worked well with what they had and the overall layouting and framing made up for a lack of more fluid and hand drawn animation.

Amrita no kyouen though, didn’t have anything to fall back to or hide its more unsightly sides. The story was paper thin, something more fit for a short one shot than a whole movie. There are movies that manage to keep a strong presence where even if no character says anything for long periods of time, they still remain interesting and captivating. It is not the case for this movie, the lack of dialogue feels very awkward. There was nothing to learn about these characters or anything related to them.
The 3D environment still looks good, but the artistry that can be seen in the first movie is gone here. There are a few shots that are interesting looking, but you can count them in one hand.
And then there is the animation. It was disorienting and the camera movement only made it look that much worse. Both movies alternate between 3D models with some hand drawn frames in between. They didn’t try to hide the use of 3D models in aragne, but in amrita they implemented 3D models to look like they have been hand drawn and at least to me that just made them look worse than a 3D model could have possibly looked.

Just like argne the ending of amrite feels completely inconsequential, but in this case it is that much worse because there was nothing to be enjoyed until you got there.

2/10 story
4/10 animation
?/10 sound
