Ichigo Hoshimiya is an average first-year middle school student, but after her best friend Aoi encourages her to enter Starlight Academy, a famous idol-training school, Ichigo's whole life changes. She meets various rivals, becomes proficient in abilities that are integral to idols, and uses Aikatsu! cards while challenging herself with an array of auditions.
Story: The story revolves around an overly annoying girl named Ichigo Hoshimiya, and her friends, Aoi and Ran. The three of them enter Starlight Academy, a school for idols. They participate in Aikatsu (“Idol Activities”), and learn about the idol world. Nothing about this show’s episodes are very interesting or original. It’s very obvious from the start that the show is meant for little kids, and to sell a product. Turns out “Aikatsu Cards” are a thing in Japan, and this show is designed to promote them. Aikatsu Cards are trading cards, each with a part of an outfit on them (dress, shoes, accessory, etc.) that, in the show, is scanned into a special machine creates those items that can then be worn. Each episode normally consists of one of the main characters, and sometimes side characters, hearing about an idol job they want to apply for, training for it in an unrealistic way, putting their outfits on magical-girl-style, getting the job (95% of the time), and learning some little life lesson. Normally this includes a singing/dancing sequence that shows off the cards/outfits. Obviously, nothing groundbreaking here; plenty of magical girl/idol shows are very similar. The difference is shows like Pretty Cure are more charming and better made, and shows like AKB and IdolM@aster are dramatically better idol shows. If you’re looking for a cute girly show, go somewhere else! Characters: All the main characters follow generic stereotypes; the bubbly and annoying blond, the smart best friend, and the calm/cool type. They could be worse (except, the main girl who is barely tolerable!) but they’re certainly not interesting. One of the best things the show is good at is the designs of background/extremely minor characters (like classmates). Even though some of the hairstyles are a bit ridiculous, they’re more interesting than generic background characters. The absolute worst part of the show is the girls’ outfits!! The Aikatsu cards looked like they were designed by 5-year-olds, and most of the outfits are laughable. Animation: Normally bright, cute, and average, but when the idols start to dance, the show takes a horrible turn for the worst. All dance sequences are done in horrible repetitive CG; it’s really sad-looking. (Although I've noticed that the CG gets better much better in the second season)
Warning this Review May Contain Spoilers Some another one of my amazing reviews, this time for the idol anime Aikatsu (The first series). This anime, to start off is perfect for a younger audience and it is clearly not aimed at an older audience. STORY First the story is really simple and actually slightly childish. There isn’t really much to say, that it was what you expected over a 50 episode anime. It did seem to drag out some areas a bit much but it wasn't terrible just a bit slow. ANIMATION So the animation goes into the typical 2-D animation for when the characters aren't singing and when they are they tend to have a more 3-D style. There a lot of anime that follow this style so in a way I was expecting it to be like this, but it wasn't teriible xx SOUND The music…well…as the main feature it was alright, most songs were pretty similar and actually after some were repeated constantly it gets a bit boring but that is that….personally Yurika’s songs were much more interesting compared to the others because I thought it was more mysterious and fitted her character great!! CHARACTERS The characters had your typical personalities and weren’t developed much, even in their own arcs. Which again was disappointing, and that is about it. I feel like I wanted a bit more out of each character and yeah we found out a bit but still not enough to satisfy me. Overall, this wasn’t the best anime but it wasn’t the worst. If you liked the family friendly, idol anime then this would be a good choice for you. Also if you want a light series then this is perfect for you. And this ends this review for Aikatsu, hope you enjoyed it >_< ~AngelBeatsYui~
I first watched Aikatsu! when I was 8 years old and I just rewatched the first episode, so my review will take both points of view in account. To get rid of the bad stuff first, the characters are veeery boring, in the first episode at least. I remember hating the little brother as a kid and that has not changed. His voice acting is annoying too, like most of the cast (With the exception of Aoi). Plus, the characters are very flat: I had watched most of the anime, but I still only remembered the main trio... However, the things that go well in this anime is the animation and sound design. Sure, it's bright colors with unicolor-based character designs, but it still made me remember Aikatsu!'s aesthetic. Plus, I was really expecting the 3D animation during the songs to age badly, but I was pleastly surprised! The texturing of the hair and the animation is so smooth, I wouldn't mind an Aikatsu! video game with the same models. Overall, it's your basic idol anime, but it still has good things going for it. It's worth checking out if you want to pass a good time.
