Both anime focus on a player straight out of junior high that have immense potential, and how their high school team helps them get closer to their dreams.
If you like sports anime that mix comedy with the often melodrama that come naturally to sports stories then both these anime should feel very familiar to you. Teamwork, love of the sport, the fight to be the best are all important themes in both of these shows.
The big difference is Haikyuu is actually sucessful at drawing you into the experience and does all of those things I just listed much better. Ace of Diamond isn't nearly as well written as Haikyuu. Ace doesn't have the a likable cast and it has one of the most unlikable leads in last year of anime.
But if you do enjoy Ace of Diamond then you will love Haikyuu.
Both Haikyuu and Ace of the Diamond have main characters who have a natural talent unknown to them at first but after getting to high school work hard to become national champions. Added that both characters really don't know how to give up and want to be the star of the team.

From seasoned veterans to newcomers to those who don't care about anything but the sport they love. Both have a mix of humor and melodrama.
