Flawless! I just wish they continued on with it instead of stopping at the Dusk Taker arc! You just don't  stop there on a masterpiece like this!

Accel World is a bit of a mixed bag. It's world and concept are familiar yet well done. It's comedy is great but it's drama is awful. The charecters are stereotypical but still enjoyable with one exception: the main character is the whiniest little b*!ch every. I know it's standard for the main character to start weak and get stronger but this guy is always moaning about stuff even once he is strong. Still if you can put up with him and don't mind seeing the plot "twits" (and I use the term loosely) from a mile away it's an enjoyable story that unfortunately ends just when it starts looking good.

My all time favourite anime, if you dislike anime genre's like SAO, you might dislike this but what's different from SAO is that the MC is not OP. He still gets beatened up and he struggles. It's a pity this does not have a second season yet.

Story

Letting aside that red haired bully from episode 1 Accel World starts off as a pretty fluffy action comedy with a serious touch. Arita-kun is a chubby boy who is often being bullied trying to escape reality via virtual reality games. His life drastically changes for the better when Kuroyukihime, basically the queen of Arita-kuns school, introduces him to a game called Accel World. While Arita-kun gets to know that new world he has been shown it's all fun and games even when his best friend, Takumu, tries to defeat Kuroyukihime to kick her out of the game.

In the second half, however, Noumi-kun shows up and takes the fun out of the game - and sadly, the Anime as well. Suddenly Arita-kun and friends are facing an enemy that actually would screw up their real life if they don't be his "pets" in the game. Of course, he gets his ass handed over to him just like he deserved it, but during the second half of the Anime that guy was really pissing me off so much that I was about to drop it more than once. And that totally misfitting side adventure of Kuroyukihime just when Noumi-kun was about to be squished was anticlimatic to a point I stalled this Anime for two whole days.

All in all the story is fair, but due to misplaced fillers and a twist in the middle of the Anime that totally destroyed it's atmosphere it's not more than that.

Animation and Sound

Nothing to complain about, but nothing special also. Especially the fights in the Accel World would have benefitted from some computer animation, but sadly nothing as far as the eye can see.

To my utmost pleasure the first opening was so great it now has a permanent place in my playlist. The second opening wasn't that great, but still good enough to listen to it every single time.

Characters

Arita-kun is a typical punching bag trying to escape his fate in virtual reality. And, oh wonder, virtual reality actually helps him in mastering his real life better. That does, however, not really add up to his character. He's cowardly, kind of selfish but also unable to ask for help no matter how much he needs it, which does barely change during the whole Anime.

Kuroyukihime and Takumu are both a little more likeable, but also no that special.

Chiyuri-chan is a really nice girl and one of the few that does treat Arita-kun well. She's kind and always worried about her friends. But at one point she really screws up, and that's when she heals Noumi-kun. I really didn't get that at all. I mean yeah she was worried about her friends and what he'd do when he really would have been defeated, but heck, he was about to be defeated! Ireally didn't get that, Chiyuri-chan.

And I don't even want to start a rant about Noumi-kun. I really don't want to.

Should you watch this?

Let us be clear: I rated this Anime 6.5/10 as a whole. This Anime has a lot of issues that make it mediocore, but most of them are located starting with episode 14. The first half of it I'd probably rate 8.0-8.5. And it would be perfectly fine to just watch the first half. Nearly everybody should be able to enjoy it.

As a whole, however, things lie differently. As stated before, the whole atmosphere of the Anime changes dramatically here. Suddenly all the fun is gone and you will have to look at that dipsh*ts stupid grin while he is ranting about things that make only sense in his sick mind.

If you can cope with that, you'll surely still be able to enjoy this Anime. Recommend I can only the first half. The second half was a pain to watch.
