Did this anime make me cry oh boy!

I had a rough idea of the story line was about, A girl who was Deaf was being teased by a boy in school.

The Music was just perfect, I honestly listen to the soundtrack just on it's own, it makes the atmosphere of the music and adds so much emotion to it!

The character designs are perfect, the art style was just stunning i honestly can't say anything more than that, the character designs for each character fit the personality so well! branching off into different hair styles, eye shapes. it was a bright and vibrant animation style, wouldn't expect anything less from the great Kyoto Animation!

Honestly,

I was expecting some lighthearted anime with a little bit of angst, Oh I think a lot of people got a lot more than what they hoped for.

It provdes a great inside on what someone with depression see's the world, being someone myself who has depression  the anime couldn't of gotten it anymore right, and if you are in the main characters position with his mindset it really hits you hard.

The story is just amazing, honestly, the way it progresses, the way the main character builds  the relationships with everyone around you, it's cute, it's sad, it's humerous.

It's a Rollercoaster of emotions.

I went to the Cinemas to see this Movie.

and i was not dissapointed.

Finally… the long awaited movie is out for all of us to enjoy! Here is a short review with my overall impressions. This is a spoiler-free review. Please bear in mind I read the manga, so some comparisons are made here as well.

Story

As society is shedding some light into the topic of bullying which is ever present, it comes as no surprise that the plot was very relatable to the audience as well as relevant. Shoko is a deaf girl who ends up being bullied at a young age, and her biggest bully (Shoya) ends up being bullied after things get out of control.

The plot is rather original as it shows both sides of bullying and the ever-lasting effects for the victim and the bully. I personally felt very touched by the movie as I have been bullied myself. To watch the story from Shoya’s point of view was amazing as he shows great growth from beginning to end. In an effort to redeem himself he tries to make things right with his family and with Shoko once he finds her later in life. I honestly felt this part to be one of the most emotional ones (you will understand once you watch). Although the manga goes in more depth with this situation, I felt that the anime did a better job at sticking to the main points only and in keeping the audience engaged. For example, the manga explores the relationship with the classmates in further detail and also discusses the gang making a movie together (these was never mentioned in the movie).

All in all, this movie is full of emotional moments which are very relatable to the audience. The plot revolves around topics of friendship, regret, bullying, and depression to an extent.

Animation

I liked the animation very much, the use of vivid colors was beautiful. The director also made an amazing job at adding symbolism to the story in various ways which was an added plus. On the other hand, I have to admit I hated the character’s designs and inconsistency in the drawing. This is in part to stay true to the mangaka but I just hated this aspect altogether to be honest.

Sound

The soundtrack was amazing. Very soothing to the topic at hand, setting the mood at the right moments. By the same token, I liked the voice acting the most including the realistic performance given to the character of Shoko.

Characters

Shoko’s character is more complex that what is seen in the surface. She is sweet but tends to hide her real emotions as much as she can. Having a disability is difficult and she tries to cope with it as best as she can. Her character was very well-developed as it shows the hardships she encounters along with her sweet and pure nature. I don’t particularly think her character matures much in this story but at least the audience is able to appreciate a few significant changes as she makes more friends, accepts herself, and tries to express her real feelings more openly.

Shoya’s character is the most complex one out of all. His life is completely changed from the moment he meets Shoko but in a turn of events, is Shoko who offers what he needs most. Shoya has the most character development and shows a great deal of personal growth. For anyone who has been depressed, his story is a very emotional one as the guilt consumes him every day. Because the audience is able to know his thoughts and feelings from his point of view, he becomes a very relatable character whose story will make you cry.

There are other characters that are worth mentioning including Shoko’s little sister, mother, and grandmother. The manga goes in more depth regarding the family situation which is a very unique and painful one to know. Shoya’s classmates and former friends have also a role to play here and show different angles of how they were affected by the ordeal. In summary, the main characters have great stories to tell and are very relatable to the audience. The remaining characters continue to be relevant but not to the same extent as in the manga.

Overall

I honestly feel like the concept of the story is a master piece. This movie should be watched by everyone to get a better understanding of bullying and disabilities. I think the story is powerful and provides a great lesson to the audience. The animation was great although the art itself from the manga was not my cup of tea. The sound is definitely an added plus and the main characters are sure to take you in an emotional roller coaster ride. This movie should be enjoyed by anyone who likes emotional topics with a bit of drama and a lot of growing up.

ive never rewatched an anime so many times in my life this anime has a special place in my heart, its so deep and meaningful that i believe this anime holds powerful meanings. this anime isnt cheesy or cliche, it holds the societys silent issues. i love how the anime portrayed the situations in our world and in the animes world similarly without brushing off too much of the uniqueness each character holds. i couldnt ever ask for more in an anime 5/5.
