The show was hard to stick with in the beginning. It didn't feel like it would go anywhere and anytime a minor plot point would come up it didn't feel right. But, if you stick with it, the ending is really satisfying. All of the previous episodes add a little bit to it and the last few episodes are really sweet. They also send a few messages and show the characters in situations I'm dealing with right now. The main characters are a friend group that always wants to look out for each other even when things try to get in the way. It also shows how certain things can affect certain people. Love/crushes, needing to make decisions, hopelessness, heartbreak, and worrying about the future are a few in there. It's a great show if you want something that's mostly chill. A few episodes do get a bit dramatic but the majority is nice n calm. I recommend you watch Love, Chunibyo, And Other Delusions! If you like this one (or the other way around. Watch this if you like LCAOD).

Soooo, yeah! Slow start but a really sweet and satisfying ending. Not my favorite show, but the end puts it up there on the list.

Nagi no Asukara is an anime I like a lot, so I can't but recommend it. I think it's really well-done, with  great visuals, an original setting and a good story. If you have to label it, I'd say it's a combination of romance/coming of age/fantasy/drama - if you're into those genres (or at least, if you don't mind watching them), then I would definetely recommend giving this a try.

The setting is quite unique. There are a number of sea villages, located on the bottom of the sea off the coasts of Japan. The people who live there have limited interactions with the people living on the surface, and you immediately get that there is a kind of rivality and mistrust between the two - mainly because the sea people's numbers are dwindling so in reaction to this, they retreat ever more into their own world strengthening the community bonds between themselves in oppostion to the surface people. The mythology of the creation and co-existence of sea people and land people is explained. But at this point, I really must mention the beautiful animation. In fact, it's the flawless visuals that draw you into this amazing underwater world and drag you into the story as well. I never got tired - through all 26 episodes - of just watching this anime. The drawings are detailed, the colours are beautiful, how they depicted and gave life to Shioshishio and the underwater world is exquisite. The animation studio did a great job.

The story, as already mentioned, is a good one. If you overlook the peculiar setting, it starts off in a pretty clichèd way. But as it progresses, it develops in unexpected directions. Our protagonists are four 14 year old kids from Shioshishio - the sea village - who are transferred to the high school on the surface when their own school shuts down. There's the theme of sea people meeting surface people and the slow overcoming of the mistrust between them, especially when they have to work together for a common goal; there's also the topic of adjusting to a new reality. I really can't go more in depth as to the plot because there's a major plot twist that you wouldn't expect and that changes direction to the whole story - and I can't spoiler it. However, the story has a good pacing and a nice ending. I think it's incredibly well narrated.

As for the characters, while I was watching the anime I really thought that the characters were well-built and underwent some great development. But actually, thinking about it later, I started having doubts, I mean I think something is definetely lacking. The moment I finished the anime, I was half-crying half-smiling, having been swept up in the emotional turmoil created by a skillful narration and a touching story line. The anime is all about the interactions between the characters, understanding and dealing with their own feelings, and the relationships between them. And this is pretty well-portrayed. But looking at them objectively, the characters are standard and they develop little and in standard ways. And every one of the main characters has feelings for someone who, in turn, has feelings for someone else, and they don't want to or are scared of admitting their own feelings - so sometimes I felt like screaming: arghh please spare me... Maybe what hit me after I finished watching the 26 episodes, is how even this anime follows that same pattern that has been developed in countless other anime of the same genre, that overflowing of good sentiments and indulging in excessive sentimentality that winds up always to the same conclusion. Nagi no Asukara complies with the rhetoric that good feelings must always triumph - and I kind of feel bad for criticizing it because there's nothing wrong with that, just that I've seen it too many times and it's gotten pretty stale to me. What I'm now thinking is that I probably won't remember it for other than the stunning visuals. Which is sort of sad, because it isn't a bad anime at all.
