5 Centimeters per Second is referred to as a romance anime, but it plays very much like an indie film. It's played at the full hour, but consists of two episodes and a conclusionry sequence of sorts. The animation is superb, without a doubt some of the best animation work I've seen from shading to movement to expressions, it's the while package. The storyline is based in romance between the two characters introduced in the first episode, but the piece as a whole is a commentary on the distance that can occur between two kindred souls or soul mates when they are pulled apart, and how it affects individuals over the course of their life. Focusing on three major stages in life (pre-adolescence, adolescence, and adulthood), this episodic film is a beautiful story of the aches and pains of falling in love, growing up, and growing apart.

While the end of the film is melancholy, it was excruciatingly relatable, and had my heart string begging for closure that unfortunately did not come in a way that I wanted. This is by no means I criticism of the film though as I think the denial of the expected closure in itself is a perfect representation of how things typically play out in life. Overall, this film is thoughtfully written, beautifully illustrated, and intentionally orchestrated.

I feel like this story depicts realism and idealism perfectly. Subverts the happily ever after trope so well and I love the realistic portrayal of love and that it is not all perfect like we are shown. The animation is absolutely STUNNING.

As a "story"... Well, it's not very good. It has no in-depth character arcs, no real climax or satisfying conclusion, but then it's only an hour. It's less of a story and more of a situation that many people find themselves in. In that, it's wonderfully painful. The movie does a swell job of creating believable people, not characters, people, in a real struggle.

That's really what this is. Not a story, but a dilemma you may or may not be all too familiar with.

It is a film made in 2007 by Makoto Shinkai and Comix Wave study Inc. was directed by Makoto Shinkai himself and the character design was done by Takayo Nishimura. It consists of three chapters of about 20 minutes each to form a film of about one hour.

Review-

5 Centimeters per second is a story of the melancholy of separation. In a world where everyone makes his own decisions, chooses his destiny; and the bonds we share with those around are changed, become stronger or break. Events that can create an aura of melancholy between the characters and also separation between them.

Shinohara Akari meets Tono Takaki as children, whom she forms a friendship with. This friendship soon becomes a greater feeling that leads them to suffer in the time of separation when one has to move with his family.

The breakdown suffered by these characters leads them to seek meetings and keep in touch. Throughout the animation there is a prevailing atmosphere of gloom on the environment, where characters are constantly looking for the future and keep the nostalgia of their time together.

Basically, the story shows the pain or dissatisfaction with not being able to realize a dream or desire, where Takaki’s life is highly influenced by the events started in childhood. It also shows us the pain and impact of our decisions, where although we have a future in mind, there will be other opportunities we left behind to pursue a goal. It is these possibilities that give you so much melancholy to this animation.

This film it's worth seeing only if they like Slice of Life and melancholy. Otherwise the story may seem very boring. However, if you enjoy true stories and like slow pace stories, you’ll find 5 centimeters per second touching and human.
