Reasons you might like Voices of a Distant Star...

sothis sothis says...

Voices of a Distant Star and 5 CM are two of a kind. Makoto Shinkai created both, and it's incredibly obvious due to the similar heart-wrenching love story, absolutely stunning animation and an overall bittersweet and melancholy feel. You don't walk away happy from either of these, but they are both beautiful gems that should be appreciated.

Aekaede Aekaede says...

Voices of a Distant Star and 5 CM are from the same producers and as such the animation style is similar. The setting may be different but they have a similar genre and emotional appeal. Also there are common themes such as romance which involves a relationship separated by distance and time.

FLAMA FLAMA says...

If you liked 5 CM you'd also like Hoshi no Koe because it's also a masterpiece from Makoto Shinkai. It has the same awesome animation and sound, and the same sad story which is full of loneliness.

Himitsu Himitsu says...

5cm/s and Voices of a Distant Star are from the same creator, Makoto Shinkai (who is a genius!). In both works, the animation is wonderfully breathtaking, and the art/tones look outstanding. You get a feeling of warmth, but at the same time, the emotion of "longing" (for someone). Voices of a Distant Star and 5cm/s give the same atmosphere and end in similar ways.

Ran Ran says...

Both 5 CM and Voices of a Distant Star relate the story of a boy and girl who have a deep relationship, and are split up by the choices they make in life (though they try to stay in touch over email). Voices of a Distant Star additionally features cool fights and action, whereas 5 Centimeters a Second is only based on the emotional state of the characters. However, both give a very similar feeling, and it's likely that you'll like the other if you liked one.

Temsik Temsik says...

Both 5 CM and Voices of a Distant Star were made by Shikai Makoto, are bittersweet, and are amazing love stories. Voices of a Distant Star is shorter than 5 CM, but is more intense and is a must-see. In addition, it was entirely created by only a single person - even the voice actors are he and his wife.

Sangokagome Sangokagome says...

Every once in a while, you come across a romance that doesn't have the typical Hollywood ending. Well, that's what I found when I first came across 5 Centimeters Per Second and I found it again with Hoshi no Koe. I was suprised with the way that love was portrayed in both of these series, and by the similarity between the two. Two beautiful stories that completely compliment each other.

Bdiah Bdiah says...

All of Makoto Shinkai's works (5 Centimeters per Second, Beyond the Clouds, The Promised Place, Voices of a Distant Star, She and Her Cat) present a visually stunning contemplation of loneliness and the pursuit of an unattainable goal. His characters find themselves psychologically isolated, often while living in an environment full of people. While this is not an uncommon character trait in anime, Makoto Shinkai's creates this mentality in a very realistic way.

karcik karcik says...

Not only they both come from the same creator - Makoto Shinkai - but their storyline is quite similar - in both the main character reminisce about his or her childhood love and how they can't be together now.

Tearlach Tearlach says...

These two anime are very similar, created by the same person and following very similar plots. Both of them love stories, and both of them kinda bittersweet.

Sheex Sheex says...

The last of the three classics that comprise the Shinkai "trilogy," 5 cm per Second once more touches upon Shinkai's philosophical perspective on the tragedies love can bring about. Again, like Beyond the Clouds, it shines a bit than Hoshi no Koe due to its greater span of time, but ultimately the individual structure of each of its three arcs bear a striking resemblance to Hoshi no Koe's single arc. It's quite obvious the two shared a mutual source of inspiration, and the fact that both films flaunt excellent composure proves that Shinkai has not lost his touch throughout the years.

Niw Niw says...

‘5 Centimeters per Second' and ‘Voices of a distant star’ share the same basic elements upon which the stories are built, while changing the superficial settings remarkably, so that the similarities won’t bother the viewer. Another thing in common is the overall mood of melancholy in both of the shows.

Furthermore, being made by the same director is given to lead to same kind of artistic solutions such as gorgeous, almost photorealistic art and moody soundtracks.

Yamori Yamori says...

A boy and girl that go to school together in the future. The girl gets chosen to go on a space mission light years away. It takes years for them to send messages back and forth. Another sweet slice-of-life seperating two young lovers.

fizrox fizrox says...

Two hearts longing for each other, separated by distance - in space and in mind. Breathtaking views, delicate music, melancholy - if this is what moves your heart, then you should take your chance and try this one anime.

ehood ehood says...

Both portray a long distance romance between two childhood friends. They both have the same emotional impact and a will they meet again feel about them. I think that if you loved one you will love the other

saiyamar saiyamar says...

Makoto Shinkai created both of these in a very similar style. If you liked one then i can almost gaurantee you'll like the other. Both are love stories with a bittersweet feel to them. The stories both automatically seemed to relate when i watched them so maybe you'll think that too. They are both themed on distance as well as love and how people will wait even if they don't understand why.

MDHTR MDHTR says...

Both movies are about phisical distance between two people destroying their relationship. The boy character is very similar to Voices of a Distant Star's even in checking the cellphone for new messages and feeling the same lonelyness except that in 5 cm per second he can't really go on in his life because of the painful feeling he has. The girl character of Voices of a Distant Star has in the end a similar feeling as the boy is 5 cm per Sec. Also the scenes have in common at least the empty classroom with the main character.

cassiesheepgirl cassiesheepgirl says...

Both of these anime are primarily about the seperation of two people. Though dealt with in different manners, both are very moving and well dealt with in their own way. If you liked the drama side of one then it's worth your while trying the other.

xtruder xtruder says...

Makoto Shinkai's work in both the Movie and the OVA deserves a look for fans of one or the other.

TheOperator TheOperator says...

Both animes are stories of love that simply cannot be because of seperation. In Byousoku 5 Centimeter it is families moving apart, and in Hoshi no Koe it is space itself that hinders them.  In both cases they try to come to grips with the fact that sometimes love is just not enough to keep you together. Also the stunning and similar art styles make both of these titles must sees.  If you like one you should definatly like the other.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

While I felt that Voices of a Distant Star was more one-dimentional then 5 Centimeters per Second (no wonder, we're comparing a 20min movie with a 1h one), they had the same feeling of melancholy to them. Both these Shinkai movies are about feelings, distance, attempts on contact and have stunning visuals. If you liked the one, I think that you would definitely like the other.

yelizaveritas yelizaveritas says...

Both works are masterpiece, created by Makoto Shinkai. They share the same feelings, the same mood, the same animation and sound.. They're so very similar to each other, that If you watch one you'd definitely fall in love with another.

Galadriel Galadriel says...

both animes are the creating of Makoto Shinkai, and are similar in many ways, both feature the same animation and sound style, both animes leave you with melancholic feelings, and also one of the most obvious thing in both of the anime is that you don't end up beeing happy after watchin them.If you enjoyed watching one of this two then for sure you will enjoy watching the other one as well.

gretzky99 gretzky99 says...

Both anime are made by Makoto Shinkai, thus the animation styles are very similar and both represent the feeling of solitude and parting.

jcemmanuelrasco jcemmanuelrasco says...

What better anime to recommend than another anime which has the same director. Yes its another heart pounding anime Movie made by Makoto Shinkai. These anime he made won awards for the best / awesome story. I tell you Anime which he makes will make you happy and cry.

Thrawn Thrawn says...

Time and distance; both are factors that can fracture bonds of the heart. Both 5 Centimeters per Second and Voices of a Distant Star have that as a key factor, as distance separates two friends who have grown to care for each other over time. They're tragic and touching and are portrayed beautifully, and I don't just mean the story. Not everything is sunshine and roses and these two films (Short film in Voices of a Distant Star's case) show the darker and sadder side of it all.

jypsel jypsel says...

Both Voices of a Distant Star and 5 Centimeter's per Second deal with love that is lost.  There is a good theme of that kind of lost love,  the "one that got away" and both are very difficult relationships to keep.  They're both tear jerkers and have dramatic endings.  They boast similar artistic styles as well that are easy on the eyes. There is a similar feel that the viewer is left with after the anime is over with as well.

eaper eaper says...

Each of these shows start out with a budding relationship then pull the couple very far apart, showing the power and strain distance has on a relationship. Throughout the show, a very sad feeling is portrayed, making each of these series similar.

pallmallandcoke pallmallandcoke says...

both of them have the same theme and the same atmosphere. they both share the same bittersweet love story where time and distances come between two people and eventually separates them.

and well Makoto Shinkai made both of them, so if you liked one of them you'll be liking the other one too.

unitzero unitzero says...

If you watched one of these and you are in the mood for another anime film with excellent animation and extremely boring high school melodrama that takes itself super serious, look now further than right here. In both cases my eighth grade self could have written the scripts for both of these films - so melodramatic and cheesy but hey some people like that kind of thing, I mean the 90's post rock band Nine Inch Nails built their entire career on the back of this kind of teenage angst. In closing, both films feature beautiful high budget art with similar stories about high school love, painted with metaphors having to do with cherry blossoms falling like snow and twinkling stars in the vacuum of space.

Bronia Bronia says...

They have the same feel, beyond being melancholic romances they are very similar. Both are about a love that is left behind or hopeless due to distance. You see the letters that the lovers write to each other, too, and both give you a sense of how much they miss each other. They are two quite, reflective anime about how love is all a matter of chance and oppurtunity.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both titles are pretty melancholy Makoto Shinkai works that focus a lot on love and showing purdy images. The mood is incredibly similar, and so are the visuals. If you watched either work and want more, check the other one out.

panikinga panikinga says...

The story and the general atmosphere of the animes are very simmilar. There is a lot of loneliness and longing for school friends who seem to be something more.

rakka148 rakka148 says...

It has the same bittersweet tone to it. It has a simlar premise with a SCI-FI twist. It has simlar slow pacing amd really focuses on the emotion of the characters.

hamletsmage hamletsmage says...

Besides both being creations of Makoto Shinkai, these anime deal with a similar concept. Two friends try to keep contact as the distance between them grows ever larger. The story is told through their emails/letters to each other. There is a lot of bittersweet love in these anime.

lindapearl lindapearl says...

Both animes, 5 Centerimeters per Second and Voices of a Distant Star, tells about a sad romance story between two couples who have a distant relationship and how the distant become further and further apart, affecting their relationship. In both animes the couples would try to keep in contact through messages and letters to keep their relationship going. If you enjoy one, you might like the other.

Both shows are sad love stories in which distance takes an important role. They also have a similar feel since they both were done by the same director. Fans of one will definitely enjoy the other

ChalamiuS ChalamiuS says...

Both of these shows are sad stories about long distance romantic relationships and the emotional toll on these characters as the distance between them grows.

The story and general feeling of both these movies are very similar (probably due to them both being directed by the same person).

5 Cm/s and Voice of a Distant Star are both Shinkai Makoto's works. They share the same atmostphere, same feelings, same artwork's style. Both stories are really heart-touching, it can makes you lie down and cry. If you really enjoyed one, you should watch the other.

Reasons you might like The Place Promised in Our Early Days...

FLAMA FLAMA says...

If you liked 5 CM you'd also like Place Promised because it's also a masterpiece from Makoto Shinkai. It has the same awesome animation and sound, and the same sad story which is full of loneliness.

Profane Profane says...

Both Place Promised In Our Early Days and 5CM have the wonderful light effects of Makoto Shinkai. Also the theme of these movies is the same. Both of them have a depressing feeling that characterize the whole movie.

Temsik Temsik says...

The spectacular background animations in 5 CM and Beyond the Clouds will leave you speechless. The romance is just as good in both anime, but the ending in Beyond the Clouds is way better and is surprising.

ace52387 ace52387 says...

Shinkai seems to have a strange obsession with middle school crushes. Just like in 5cm, the main character of Beyond the Clouds fondly reminsices on his easy going and lightly romantic relationship with his childhood sweetheart, but has difficulty coping with their separation. Both movies convey the same mix of melancholy nostalgia and inescapable lonliness.

Sheex Sheex says...

Though I personally found Beyond the Clouds more appealing than 5 Centimeters per Second, I've had many others disagree with me. Like all of Shinkai's works, these movies are two peas in a pod, mainly due to their gorgeous visuals and their poignant, melancholy stories of unrequited love. They pretty much the same romantic concept packaged in two different shells, and given the high quality of each, neither are movies to be missed.

The first reason I think you'll like both of these movies is that they come from the same creator (Makoto Shinkai). The other is taht they're both about how childhood love and promises can last and be remembered. So, If you liked one, you'd surely like the other.

fizrox fizrox says...

These two prodcutions are similiar in many ways, starting from graphics, through characters and plot to feelings and very unique atmosphere.

uberrig uberrig says...

If you enjoy excellent attention to detail, down the minutia of shadows casted by even telephone/power lines, a desire to see the same theme (young children and believable love polygons) and superb voicework that MAKES you feel part of the story then these 2 movies are definately for you.

Deathlord9100 Deathlord9100 says...

The storyline is the first thing that stands out in both movies. Each film starts by telling the childhood story of the main characters. In both movies the main characters are boys that find their first love in school. For some reason (spoilers not included :P) the couple is seperated about midway through the movie. The story then jumps ahead aproximately 10 years the story is resolved one way or another. All in all the storyline mechanics are very similar and that is the main reason that I would reccomend Five Centimeters per Second if you have seen The Place Promised In Our Early Days (or vise versa).

Neither of the movies have what you may call a "perfect" ending, but that is just another reason that they are unique. Both Five Centimeters per Second and The Place Promised In Our Early Days were also directed by Makoto Shinkai, and being as most of his movies are similar in several ways, that alone should be enough to squeeze out a reccomendation. The only thing I think I left out was that they share the same themes, romance / drama, but that is almost implied being as you could figure that out on your own by looking at the "Tags" bar.

Overall, both films feature the same themes as well as similar storyline mechanics that ensure you will like one if you liked the other.

Shinka Shinka says...

Shinkai Makoto. Theres not much else that can be said. Masterpieces of undying love and hope.

Even though they are both quite different movies, if you are up for some serious, heartbreaking, painfull, agonizing moment, either of these will overflow your emotions till tears brake your eyes.

Merryberry Merryberry says...

Both Promised place and 5cm explore relationship between people and both do so in an incredible visual manner that is both easy to watch and enjoy. As such if you liked either one, then the other will do well to compliment it with the slow and steady storylines that carry you gently along. Well worth watching just to be incorperated into the floating feeling and the developing relationship.

Niw Niw says...

While taking a more unusual approach to the actual story, this another movie from Shinkai Makoto still follows the same guidelines as his other works in most of the major aspects, such as art, music, theme and mood. Moreover, once again, the events revolve around a boy and a girl who are separated due to conditions out of their control, and the yearning to meet each other again.Due to these remarkable similarities it's definite that if you enjoyed '5 Centimeters per Second' you'll be sure to like 'The promised place' as well.

Oehr Oehr says...

Those two movies feel somewhat alike... Maybe Makoto ran out of ideas? Well, this doesn't change the fact that, if you like romatic movies, those two are a must watch for you!

ave ave says...

You'll surely love Beyound The Clouds, if you liked Byousoku 5cm, since both movies are from the same director and both handle a story about the distance of two destined persons. And of course, Beyoud The Clouds is as artistic as Byousoku 5cm.

hyperbole1729 hyperbole1729 says...

Those two Makoto Shinkai movies send the same particular feeling of beauty. The atmosphere, sound effects and dialogues in both give a sense of poetry. If you liked one, watch the other; you will not be deceived.

MDHTR MDHTR says...

Both movies have the same beautiful graphics for the surroundings and character drawing and the same slow rythm of story ongoing. Both movies build a suspence in the viewer for the last part which solves or ends everything. The viewer may wait for how painful the ending can be after the begining and if the characters will meet again to ease their pain?

Omurqi Omurqi says...

While Place Promised puts a bit more focus on plot elements like science, at their core, both movies are about feelings of love and friendship that last over the years and survived seperations. 5 Centimeters has a slightly darker feeling than Place Promised, but if you liked the one, you will definitely enjoy the other.

BluePeppermint BluePeppermint says...

Whilst both titles are by Makoto, and share a similar high quality of animation and sound, that isn't all there is to them. Both have a relatively similar plot, with a special focus on unattainable romance and/or goals, as well as how characters interact with each other on a closed, personal level. Small casts in both titles help achieve this. Both are tragic at times, and both tug at the heartstrings.

Chances are that you'll like one if you liked the other, even if you're only watching for the animation.

yelizaveritas yelizaveritas says...

Both 5 centimeters per second and The Place Promised in Our Early Days were made by Makoto Shinkai. Also, both movies share a very melancholy tone, Not to mention the absolutely flawless and detailed animation that gives Shinkai his well earned reputation as the next Miyazaki.

both animes are one of a kind, both of them were created by Makoto Shinkai, and both of them are similar in many aspects, both feature the same stunning animation style, the same sound backgrounds, and the same environment leaving you with some bitter melacholic feelings. There is only one obvious difference between this two animes, 5 CM concentrates more on a drama/romance aspect while Kumo no Muko, Yakusoku no Basho in addition has sci-fi as a main aspect.Even so both of them are quite alike, if you like one of this two you will definitely like the other one as well.

Both of these movies are highly recommended. The are both made by the same studio and have mind-blowing animation quality and detail. Both have a similar feel, but 5 cm has a more realistic, universal message and feel in a school-life setting while Place Promised is in a more fantastical setting and centers around a mysterious tower and the conflict between two friends.

both of them have this feeling where trying to reach their dreams, on how they do it and what it feels like at a particular time.

Very similar anime, and both are masterpieces! Amazing animation and sound, and in both anime there is a touching and very emotional story, even though sadness is a common thing. Aside of that, the ideas of the stories are very nice, and the characters as well. In general, if you've watched one of them, you definetely have to watch the other one, but I'd say both are a "must" in everyone's "watched" or "want to watch" list!

The stories in 5 Centimeters per second and the Place Promised in Our Early Days both convey a sense of melancholy and longing for a childhood romance that never was. So... how do you like your scenery? If you like them to be at least a bit good looking, than look no further. Both 5 Centimeters per Second and The Place Promised in our Early Days are about just that. The sheer beauty put into each scene is jaw-dropping and it has the music to match.

But the beauty isn't only in the visuals and sound, but in the stories as well. Both are about romance and tragic loves, where the lovers become separated due to powers beyond their control.

SadisticTendencies SadisticTendencies says...

Different movies from the same directors tend to have plenty of differences, and a few common denonimators. However, when it comes to Makoto Shinkai it's easy to see the similarities. 5 Centimeters per second is pretty much IDENTICAL to The Place Promised In Our Early Years. The shockingly high production values, the themes of love and friendship, poetic approach and mindblowingly beautiful use of lightning unite the two movies as powerful tales. Not to mention the frequently occuring trains that seem to have caught Makoto's affection. If you like one of these it's almost impossible for you to dislike the other.

Although The Place Promised in Our Early Days is not as sad, it does give the same type of melancholy feel. Just check it out.

These two short movies both stand out for being among the most visually stunning anime around. Both of these movies are beautifully drawn pieces of bittersweet relationships that show more than tell. They both tackle themes of separation and they're guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings.

Slow-paced romances which have a bittersweet feel, 5cm/s and Kotonoha no Niwa focus on a pair of characters who struggle to find balance between their relationship and the demands of the "real world." Both are also gorgeously animated (and by the same director) so there are definitely visual similarities as well. Fans of either won't want to miss the other!

More melancholy romance films from Makoto Shinkai. Both are beautifully drawn, especially The Garden of Words, and the stories are centred around a romance. These are rather similar, so if you liked one, check the other one out.

The Garden of Words feels very much like the spiritual successor of Makoto Shinkai's classic 5 Centimeters per Second.  Both deal with relationships and solitude while artfully demonstrating personal and emotional growth through understanding loss.  While the themes are similar, The Garden of Words does not retread over the stories portrayed in 5 Centimeters per Second, but feels like a entire new chapter.  After the Cherry Blossom act of 5 Centimeters per Second, The Garden of Words feels like the next strongest story.

McGreddy McGreddy says...

Both by director Makoto Shinkai and both pieces explore themes of clouds and cherry blossoms.

Philemon Philemon says...

The Garden of Words and 5 Centimeters per Second, done by the same studio, are both splice of life, with laid back pacing and realistic settings. Both stories revolve around a shy, tentative romance, where the characters find themselves moving on and drifting apart in the end. Nevertheless, the relationship that they form changes the way they move forward in life. Slow-paced with a charming atmosphere, if you like one of these animes, you will probably appreciate the other.

Both anime were created by the same author, Makoto Shinkai. Due to this, it gives a similar melodrama tone. Both anime also deals about romantic problems and how they deal with it. They only differ slightly on the problem it self. One deals about a long distance relationship while the other is more on the status quo issue ( teacher-student relationship =/= unusual/taboo)

Both animated by makoto shinkai, these two works are masterpeices of animation. Strangely realistic in cases and breathtaking in others, both works have deep story lines that accompany the outstanding animation. The struggles found between two lovers is always different though a struggle all the same. In Byousoku, Takaki and Akari's relationship follows a more ordinary path compared to Takao and Yukari's relationship in Kotonoha, which turns out a twist and has higher tension.

In addition to the ambience, a lot of style is shared between both of the "short" stories of Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and 5 Centimeters per Second. The real reason for this recommendation is the similar feeling of silence & sadness that only few anime share.

mimiguille mimiguille says...

The plot of Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo and 5 CM are somewhat alike; the main component of each plot is  the concept of time. These two anime will make you reflect on how time is very important.

kawaiipie kawaiipie says...

As far as endings go both of these anime leave you feeling the same way. The imagery of 5cm is superb and the characters of Toki wo Kakeru are really well done. Both of these movies (even though 5cm is in 3 parts) are of a high standard and have a love theme. Toki wo Kakeru is also quite funny so it's worth checking out one if you liked the other.

Iahel Iahel says...

A great love story is what brings Toki wo and 5 cm together. Each involves love between people who are not yet adult but are not children, platonic love, and pure feelings between pure souls. You'll enjoy the romantic atmosphere that permeates through both titles.

quincunx quincunx says...

These productions bring a level of character immersion that I've only seen in a few animated movies. In under two hours they manage grab hold of your senses and really allow you to empathize with the protagonists.

Byousoku 5 Centimeters will give you the more down-to-earth realism of a love found and lost, including the pain that goes with it. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, while taking a similar approach, also adds in some time-distorting comedy that'll have you chuckling along the way.

They both do a wonderful job creating a 'personal' watching experience that any fan should look for in a quality animation.

Temsik Temsik says...

Both 5 CM and Toki wo have spectacular background animations, and both talk about first love from a teenager's perspective. You'll get a fuzzy feeling from watching both anime, so be prepared to handle it!

Sangokagome Sangokagome says...

When I first looked at "Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo", I had no idea that it would be so similar to 5CPS in terms of romance. The protagonists want nothing more than for their love to survive the wrath of time, and to be with the one they love, despite their circumstances.

Khaos Khaos says...

Both animes are built up very well in their backgrounds and plots. The young protagonists' emotional lifes develops before our eyes, and in the end they have to accept the fate which parts them from their beloved ones.

Ailly Ailly says...

Both anime have an interesting love story that will melt your heart. Though the style is somewhat different, the backgrounds and characters have the same feel about them. They're realistic and the situations they're in are so recognisable. Who hasn't had the feeling that time was moving forward too quickly? And both have an ending that won't let you untouched. You definitely have to see these two anime!

yelizaveritas yelizaveritas says...

'5 cm per second' and 'Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo' are two absolutely awesome movies. Love is the main theme in both, though they show two different kinds of love. I think, everyone would find something for her-/himself If she/he watch them both.

eaper eaper says...

Each of these movies do a great job developing characters in a short amount of time, deal with many similar themes, and have good artwork and backdrops(although 5 cm/second had slightly better detail) along with a very good soundtrack.

Sammac Sammac says...

Both are very well presented and have a gorgeous look to them. They are also beautiful, feel-good movies however I find 5 CM to be more abstract and Toki is more "entertaining" in a traditonal movie sense. Nevertheless, both sweet films.

JohnWatchAnime JohnWatchAnime says...

Both the girl who leapt througth time and 5 centimeters per second are about romance and the problems/emotions it brings with it.

Gavia Gavia says...

Both are movies focused on romance, with a lot of melancholy and sadness as the story progresses. Furthermore, both have a theme of time, and the way it can separate people and pull apart relationships (or even worse, in the case of Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo)

After watching Kimi no Na wa i found myself recalling similar emotions after watching 5 Centimeters per second (although maybe not as heavy/depressing as 5 cent/sec) and upon closer inspection i found that its the same director and production company so understandable i suppose. Both A grade movies, heavy on emotion, high level animation, sound, story etc.

These are easy recommendations for each other! Both have a special Shinkai blend of ideas about romance, fate, and trying to hang on to a bond through separations of time/space. Gorgeously animated, both will hit you right in the feels.

Clannad

Clannad

Tomoya Okazaki is a third-year high school student who is generally bored with life and doesn't take his studies, future, or anything else seriously. One day, however, he meets a lonely-looking girl in the school courtyard, Nagisa Furukawa. She explains to him the source of her loneliness: she had missed a lot of the previous school year and thus is repeating her third year; everybody that she knew has already graduated, and she is lonely. Tomoya is rather indifferent at first, but decides that he has nothing better to do and spends increasingly more time helping Nagisa restore the school drama club. As his relationship with Nagisa grows, Tomoya begins to open up to various other people around the school as well...

RaptorClaw RaptorClaw says...

5 CM and Clannad have a distinct feeling of romance, and take place in high school. They are slow-paced with beautiful scenery and intricate dialogues and monologues that keep the story going without giving too much to the viewer.

awpaperwings awpaperwings says...

5 Centimeters per Second and Clannad are very different animes with very different feels, yet both set out to say something about love and relationships. Some of the similarities are their school-life setting and scenery and a chapter by chapter pacing. Their differences are that in Clannad comedy is a focal point in the show, there are 5 or more well developed characters and a more light-hearted feel. In 5 Centimeters per Second however, there is intentionally little or no character development, creating more universally understandable characters. The mood of 5 Cm is much more melancholy than Clannad, but over all both are highly recommended. If you liked one, I'm sure you will like the other.

eaper eaper says...

Clannad and 5 cm share a strong sense of love, while having a lot of the sorrowful parts of it intact. Also, each of the series are slow paced and, (at least for a lot of 5 cm and all of Clannad) centered in high school. If you like the romance or pace in either of these, you'll likely enjoy the other.

ishmael1991 ishmael1991 says...

There are major differences to the feel, mainly because one is a feauture length movie and the other is a series. However, they share the same good points,as they are both beautifully produced, and emotional. Mainly though, if you like visually beautiful animes, both of these are must sees.

theazariah theazariah says...

I should probably recomment 5 cm per second to Clannad After Story, but regardless it's the same sort of classic longing-love story.

Both stories follow the characters through a long period of time too. There is a lot of focus on the "growing up" process and what it's like to be a young adult in different situations.

5cm ranges from grade school to age ~25 and Clannad with the after story ranges from 15 to ~25.

Both have very different endings I suppose but stylistically they're presented in a similar way.

Also, sakura are pretty prominent in both i guess.

YuiYui YuiYui says...

Both 5 Centimeters per Second and Clannad are Slow paced, Romance stories and are both pretty good. The story in both is very detailed and they both are mainly set in a school so there ae quite a few similarities. The main difference is that Clannad involves some comedy so it isn't all serious and 5 Centimeters per Second only really focus' on the romance (keeping it serious). So if you liked one you should like the other.

Soolrak Soolrak says...

Reasons you might like Millennium Actress...

Temsik Temsik says...

I found Millennium Actress and 5 CM to be very similar. Each is about the pursuit of love - the characters "love to love" a unique person, ignoring even time as it passes by. Both main characters refuse to give the present a chance, and ignore all of the options that life and love offer to them because they are stuck in the past.

Sangokagome Sangokagome says...

In both of these series, while there is a romance going on, neither of the couples come into contact for much of the film. The romances are the centers of the films, and in the end, they conclude smiliarly. Their artwork is not to be overlooked, and are amazing pleasures to view. Enjoy!

uberrig uberrig says...

In Millenium Actress we have our protagonist, Chiyoko Fujiwara, chasing after a vision of a man she met once. In 5 CM we have Shinohara Akari chasing his memory of a promise that may or may not have been made with a childhood sweetheart. The chase, the dream, the vision ... the ending. Both bittersweet and both unrequited. I think you'll greatly appreciate the stretches of reality both protagonists put upon themselves in each film.

fizrox fizrox says...

"Where you lead, I will follow" - whether it means long train journey, waitng for years, or chasing after throughout the country... These two series show how strong love can be and how many problems it can overcome with its power, so in this matter they are much alike.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

Both Millennium Actress and 5 Centimeters tell the story of the pursuit of an unobtainable love. They both do so in a style unique to their director (Kon and Shinkai, two masters in their genre) and thus present their story in a different way. At their core though, they are about the same thing. If you loved one of these movies, make sure to check out the other as well.

Raspberries Raspberries says...

Did you ever see that movie Serendipity with John Cusack? I seriously think the writers watched these two shows and decided Hollywood needed a movie that followed the same basic plot. Both 5cm/sec and Millennium Actress are FANTASTIC, and though a bit slow-paced are sure to hold your attention till the end, where you finally get the conclusion you've been waiting for.

For people who are deeply in love with each other life should be easy - not for pairs from 5 cm/s and Bokura Ga Ita. These two anime show how difficult it is to maintain great realtionship despite from great feelings involved.

MDHTR MDHTR says...

Both stories has to do with love and separation from the loved one. While Byousoku 5 Centimeter is a lonely story and Bokura ga Ita is more like a normal couple story with being together and being separated, both has an powerful feeling of longing - if nothing ever going to be right.

wolfangel87 wolfangel87 says...

Bokura ga ita and 5 Centimeters per Second show the hard realities life portrays.  Even though there are good times life is not all filled with happy endings and relationships consist of a huge part of that.  Both of these stories show just how heartbreaking life can be at some points and how the characters in the story can survive past them.  Relationships are hard no matter what and separation from the one you love is even harder to deal with.

snivets snivets says...

In both stories, "ideal" high school romances ultimately are anything but ideal. Subject to the pressure of life events, will the characters be able to stay together, or will they just end up hurting each other?

If you saw and enjoyed either 5 Centimeters Per Second or Whisper of the Heart, you should watch the other one. Although both anime FEEL different from one another (each anime has a very distinctive feel to it, and each evokes an entirely different atmosphere), they share a similar enough storyline that the adventure of watching the other one will round out your total anime experience.  Both movies explore the emotions of two characters developing feelings for each other and then undergoing a separation.

Watch Whisper of the Heart to feel the development and growth of burgeoning young love and watch 5 Centimeters Per Second to feel the pangs of yearning and longing. Seeing both really does help give a feeling of having experienced both sides of the same coin. Both movies will really touch you! If you enjoyed either one, do yourself a favor and check out the other.
