I started watching anime before I knew what anime was. At some point in elementary school, I saw My Neighbor Totoro we rented from the local VHS rental store, and Kiki's Delivery Service, and possibly a couple others that I cannot recall.

Later, in middle school, I found Sci-Fi channel was showing these really awesome cartoons on Saturday mornings so I setup my VHS player to record them on a timer so I could watch them later. At some point, I figured out that these cartoons that were so action oriented and different from regular cartoons were actually something different called anime. Many were subbed. I saw things like Akira, Iria: Zeiram The Animation, Venus Wars, FLCL, and similar.

Eventually in high school, I found ways to get to more of this stuff on demand on my computer and traded with my friends. I spent entire days watching Initial D over summer vacation. I got into Ghost in the Shell, Spriggan, etc and I've been hooked ever since. American shows just couldn't compete with this sort of exciting content. I still cannot stand episodic shows where entire plots were crammed into 20 or 40 minutes (be it American or anime). I found amazing stuff like Full Metal Alchemist and loved it. Studio Ghibli content is universally amazing and I even managed to see a couple of them in theaters.

While I admit there are some decent and even a few good dubs out there, I exclusively watch anime subbed. I prefer to hear the original voice actors directed by the original director(s). I prefer to see a more literal translation in text rather than trying to adjust the verbiage so that it fits the mouth movements.

Today, I like action, fast-paced, drama, comedy, violence genres. I don't like episodic or cliche shows that have sterotypical characters or plots. I tend to not like sports or majical girl or romance, but there are some exceptions like Hajime no Ippo, Yowamushi Pedal, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's, or Fruits Basket.

For manga, I tend to exclusively like the really well drawn action manga with plenty of violence and blood like Berserk, Akira, Vinland Saga, Zetman, Ubel Blatt, etc.
