Nyanpire The Animation

Jun 21, 2012

The Japanese interpretations of vampires are certainly intriguing. You can stumble into bloodthirsty warriors such as Hellsing's Alucard. Or you can fall into the opposite spectrum where the supernatural being is more...humorous such as Karin from Karin (or the manga title Chibi Vampire) where she has nosebleeds that could rival Niagara Falls. No joke. Nyanpire falls moreso into this spectrum, but it's in no means a bad thing for I frankly enjoyed it far more than I thought I would. The opening grants the viewer the general story: a black abandoned kitten is on the last thread of life until a vampire... See full review

X-Men

May 20, 2013

Being a fan of both anime and X-Men, I thought this was going to be an interesting interpretation of the clash between Western and Eastern ideals in action comics. Granted, I have seen similar takes in "Batman Gotham Knight" and "Animatrix", but I thought those did better serving as individual stories rather than a series. I commend Marvel and Madhouse taking a chance here with this interpretation of X-Men, but it didn't make the cut for me. The only things I enjoyed in this series was the art. Madhouse does a great job with its background and action sequences. The 2D animation and the... See full review

Gunbuster

Dec 27, 2012

Going in, I didn't know much about Gunbuster-I just knew that it was the directorial debut of Hideaki Anno of Evangelion fame. I felt similar thoughts on the first review. Through its 6 episodes, I found that much like the two worlds they present (the timeline of Earth vs. the silent stillness of space) I felt like I was crusing through events that may have happened. This was brought about by the realism in the animation and the world's presentation. This amplified the plot of humanity bonding together to bring about victory over aliens. As previously mentioned, these two worlds present an interesting... See full review

Elfen Lied

Dec 3, 2012

Earlier, I had written a review for the "Elfen Lied" manga, so I will attempt to have a brief compare and contrast between the manga and anime. Note that this is my first time and I'm being experimental, so treat this with kind critique. Despite getting up in age compared to more recent titles, "Elfen Lied" has still managed to entrance anime fans and those curious to the genre. Even now, I have caught multiple reviews for this title, ranging from "it being pointless" to "a title that should be considered an anime classic." I found that after reading the manga... Hotarubi no Mori e

Nov 30, 2012

Without a doubt, "Hotarubi no Mori E" has become one of my favorite anime short in recent years. It stands on its own as its own entity and brings forth messages of frienship and appreciation of life that are not subtle, but illustrated beautifully in the backdrop of rural Japan. The story is a simple one in which we have a glimpse of the friendship between Hotaru and the mysterious Gin as seasons pass. As they do so, it brings the elements of a blossoming love and how certain events of time stand out from others. I don't want to reveal too much because much like the stories that are... Hell Girl: Two Mirrors

Apr 26, 2012

I was aware of what I was going to get into when starting Hell Girl: Futakomori or Two Mirrors, and yet I was surprised of what was behind the red thread. Much like the first season, Two Mirrors follows the same episodic style: we have a poor soul being tormented, they ask Hell Girl for help, they resist at first but then banish their tormentor to Hell by trecherous illusion before riding on the creepiest ferry boat in existence. Or does it? Even though Two Mirrors follows the formula above, there are plenty of twists that are provided. Some episodes don't give the viewer of whom is... See full review
