about me

Hello, welcome to my profile! The picture is of me settling a bet over whether a completely untrained and out-of-shape dude could roundhouse kick a cup that was higher than his head. Don't I look awesome?

I'm a recently graduated physics/math major who writes anime reviews for some reason. As I finished up my physics major, I realized that I just wasn't interested in pursuing the field as a career, so instead I kicked some ass at my GRE's and got an assistantship to study at the department of statistics at Colorado State University. Why statistics? Well, WHY NOT?

Besides anime, my main interests are writing, strategic gaming (poker, magic: the gathering, go, chess, etc), and internet piracy.

As far as my reviews/star ratings go: In general, a 6 (***) is watchable, a 7 (***1/2) is good and an 8 (****) is a must-see.

A couple of years ago I took a screenwriting class, which is when I realized that my fondness for both movies and writing could be put to great use. Ever since then, I've set my career goal in that direction, and really immersed myself in movies. I have seen Oldboy - I liked it, but I like the other two films in Park Chan-Wook's trilogy more.

I think I just fell out of sorts with anime. There must have been a patch where nothing interesting was being released, and I'm sure I thought to myself that it wasn't really for me anymore. I still have a soft spot in my heart for the really great stuff like Monster, Kino's Journey, Honey and Clover and the like. I think the last anime I watched that I'd call truly good was Kemonozume, though I liked Higurashi for all the wrong reasons. :D

It's too bad about Pantha. I talked with her on AIM for a while but then she sort of disappeared off of that too. I'm friends with Sinai on Facebook. Other than that, I don't really talk with anyone else from the site. And you shouldn't view sticking with your hobby as weird - think of it as disciplined! You're a stronger man than all of us.

If you have any recommendations that you really feel I should watch, I'm all ears. I do admit to having a surface interest in Ergo Proxy, but after reading your review I'm not so sure. :]

Hey Viva, I used to go by Ridian waaaay back in the AnimeNfo days. I stumbled upon this site, found your profile completely by chance, and thought I'd drop you a line. (The site says that the screen name Ridian is already taken...hmm...) I haven't watched a lick of anime in three years and don't really intend to any time soon, but still thought it would be fun to look around and catch up. Plus, it's a perpetual breath of fresh air to read some halfway decent critical writing for a change. Is Pantha a member here?
