Fairy Tail

Aug 27, 2010

Its...alright. You know. I was told by a friend it was the best thing ever, I tried watching it and yeah it was alright. The more I watched it though the more it became apparent I was watching a kid's cartoon. I would have loved this when I was younger but its just too simplistic and childish to hold me today. That's not to say its bad of course but I stopped watching not too far in- the main characters have teamed up with some others to try and find a death staff in the hands of some bad guys or something like that? And I was never drawn back to watch it again.

Motto To Love Ru

Jan 19, 2011

Motto To Love-Ru as you can probally tell from the name is the sequel series to To Love-Ru (What is it with these Japanese and such random names...motto?) Rather than the flowing straight forward plot of TLR Motto instead follows a format of each episode consisting of 3 mini continuityless mini-episodes. Much like the OVA Motto has a lot of stuff taken from the manga which was never explained in the anime- ghost girl's physical body, Run's idol career, Celine the plant girl and to a lesser extent (they were sort of explained in the OVA) Lum....sorry, La La's sisters. The animation quality in this series... See full review

DearS

Aug 27, 2010

Wow, I'm really not getting where all the hate for Dears is coming from.I didn't want to watch this at first. The title sounds awful and a bit...'gay' (in the way the kids mean it these days), the main advertising art puts me in mind of the sort of thing from the cover of my chobits manga- doesn't reflect whats inside but gives other people a very messed up impression of what you're reading. For some reason though I gave it a go and I was very pleasently surprised. This is a very good anime. One thing which really makes this stand out for me is the relationships are somehow more believable than in so many... Ranking of Kings: Treasure Chest of Courage

Jun 20, 2023

The original Ranking of Kings is a truly fantastic show. It has an off putting old school children's cartoon animation style but beneath this it hides a game of thrones level deep and complex fantasy story. In ROK no character is a cliche and they all have more going on than first meets the eye. Even the villains are not so villainous as they might seem and the heroes are not pure.  So I looked forward to series 2. It came in the form of treasure chest of courage and... This is not what I ordered. Basically this isn't series 2. The anime stormed ahead and basically caught up with the manga so a... See full review

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Dec 15, 2010

Not at all what I was expecting. The synopsis for this anime which was presented to me went as follows- Haruhi Suzumiya, a normal school girl, is upset with the monotony of everyday life, she dreams of a world filled with aliens, time travellers and people with psychic powers. The dullness of standard school life is a grave disappointment. Now. Upon hearing this I was intrigued. Would we have here an actual anime on the shittyness of being a school student? I could certainly relate. When I was a teenager I certainly dreamed of my life being spiced up with something befitting of the TV shows, video games... See full review

Ranma 1/2

Sep 20, 2010

Ranma is a truly amazing manga, one of my favourites, one of the best. Funny as sin and quite a good story too with some nifty action scenes. I love it.The anime meanwhile....ack...Well...the anime is a different matter. Its decent. Don't get me wrong but....it just doesn't work. With the first series they concentrate far too much on the romance and miss out the fun. They can't decide if their target demographic is girls or boys so fall flat aiming for either. When the anime was being made still this was recognised as a problem. It was not a great success early on. As such they shook things up. Introduced... See full review

Bleach

Aug 27, 2010

For a little while I loved this anime. When I first started watching it I thought it was the best thing ever. I got obsessed in the way I sometimes do with particularly good things. As time went by however and access to episodes of it proved hard to get my interest waned and slowed. When they got to the Soul Society it had degraded in quality from awesome to merely good. I kept watching, saw the Soul Society through to the end, the final battle put me in mind of DragonballZ for some reason...Rather good stuff.....Then though we got to the Bount arc. Awful. Just awful.I stopped watching Bleach regularly 4 or... See full review

The Fire Hunter

Dec 16, 2023

Honestly this show was a slog.  So much about it ticks boxes that means it should be right up my alley. A deep and very Japanese fantasy setting. Mamoru Oshis involvement.  Retro animation styling. But the sum of its parts just comes together into... Meh. It really does feel like something from another era. Albeit with some noticeable 3D flashes. Even it's story and setting seems very of the showa era. Like a classic Ghibli film.  I wonder whether it's me. Have my tastes changed so much over the years? Have modern anime with their quick pacing and shallow plots spoiled me? It's a... See full review

Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon

Oct 1, 2023

It's just... Not very good is it.  I'm someone who has enjoyed a fair bit of trash isekai in my time. That's not what this is though. Rather it's a weird super episodic slice of fantasy life series where very little of interest ever really happens.  The comedy is dull, drama low, the mystery uninspiring and no doubt destined to never be answered.  I got bored and stopped watching quickly.  Maybe watch the first episode for the oddity factor but once you've seen that you've seen all the series has to offer.

Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune

Aug 6, 2023

Completely by surprise this is a really good show. It is completely lacking in basically any of the typical stylistic choices of a contemporary anime apart from the bizzare cutesey AI that occasionally shows up- interestingly she remains undubbed if you do switch over to a dubbed version. Rather than a typical anime it seems more like a modernised adaptation of a classic sci-fi novel; something like Starship Troopers.  As such I expect a lot of standard anime fans really won't like this show. But as someone who likes sci-fi and anime... yes. It is very good. As an old person it could also be... See full review

My Life as Inukai-san's Dog

Apr 30, 2023

I have always been partial to stories where the main character finds themselves in a body that is not their own. Whether it be Kafkas Metamorphisis, Quantum Leap, or the seminal classic "Woof", body horror without the horror hits my vibes. I also happen to think dogs are fantastic.  So it was that as a learned man of culture I ignored all the negative reviews and gave Inukai San a go....  Well. That. Was. A. Thing.  To start with its not so bad. Really it's not. Sure Inukai San herself comes across as seriously weird  but... That's funny. So prim and proper and uptight at... See full review

BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense.

Apr 18, 2023

Perhaps the most textbook generic isekai going. There's just nothing to appeal about it. Right from the straight from Sword Art Online "Its a video game" plot.  There's no stakes and no fun. There's not even any interesting concept behind it all.

The Executioner and Her Way of Life

Apr 18, 2023

This is a very peculiar anime. The premise was really intruiging. A post-isekai in the truest sense. I've often thought myself of a story about a world where isekai happens and the locals reacting badly to this.  Nonetheless upon first attempting to watch I just couldn't get into it. I dropped it within 2 episodes. The style is just off. The out of place comedic moments betwen Momo and Menou just feel wrong and completely out of tone. They were of a 'cute girls doing cute things' variety which is instantly off putting in an anime for me. They made me not want to watch the show. Its common with... See full review

Re:ZERO: Starting Life in Another World Season 2: Part II

Apr 8, 2021

Well this is sad. After a first series that truly ranks amongst one of the best series I have seen for a long while, Re:Zero climbs up its own posterior here. Gone is the fun and exciting action of the Groundhog Day adventures in the first series. Instead you have a plot about the uninteresting backstory of characters that you can't help but care little for.

Attack on Titan The Final Season

Apr 8, 2021

Well, who could have expected the story would end up here from the first episode of the first season? Where Attack on Titan at first seemed to be a typical shonen fantasy within a few episodes of the first season it flipped this; so, its a mecha anime? Ah no, it turns out its not that either. Its something completely different. Its a work worthy of George Orwell.  I admit there was some dissapointment with series 2 and its departure from the shonenesque action series roots, but by the last series it is clear what it was doing and it all holds up very well. Series 4...wow. Well. It goes places. It... See full review

The Promised Neverland 2nd Season

Apr 8, 2021

Well, it couldn't not be dissapointing after how amazing the first series was. Such a big brewing mystery about the state of the outside world had to be solved in some way and it was always going to be tough. I was expecting it to be a warped future version of our world to be quite honest rather than a fantasy setting; hence the date. But it is what it is. The way they introduce this too isn't fantastic. Straight into an action scene I felt I missed something somewhere along the line. And then they're off at a lightning speed. People are angry about this second series. I never read the manga but... Highschool of the Dead: Drifters of the Dead

Dec 30, 2011

"OK guys, so we're making one last episode as an OVA. Should we continue the story?"
"Nah, lets just send all the characters to an island for no apparent reason where they can dance around in bikinis!"

Yep, the show addressed the stupidness of this situation itself in a comment from one of the characters at the start and yep, given the priorities of the show I should have expected a big fat slab of fanservice. But...to this extent? If you like the show be rest assured you can safely watch this without missing out on anything. Nothing happens. The characters just get high and... See full review

Highschool of the Dead

Dec 30, 2011

Well this was unexpected. From the start it looked like I was to be getting a fairly played straight teenage action anime, soon however…it became clear there were cracks in this veneer. It started with the silly fat guy sidekick, fair enough, but then the school nurse showed up and…oh deer. Don’t get me wrong. This anime is certainly worth a watch, quite a fun little show- and I say that as someone who normally isn’t into such firmly teenage boy anime. It does occasionally treat the Night of the Living Dead sort of verse in a interesting way.
But….why oh why is... See full review

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

May 10, 2011

When I heard this film existed I knew I had to watch it. Despite initial misgivings I really grew to like the Haruhi Suzumiya TV series, its one of my favourite animes probally. Yes, most of the second series was an absolute annoying chore to watch, and yes, I know that was the point (they took it quite a bit too far though...) but otherwise Haruhi is quite consistantly engaging. So...a feature length film. How would that work? Interesting times are ahead. Spoilers incoming:
The plot of this film is in a way a typical stock sci-fi plotline. Kyon wakes up to find the world around him has subtly... See full review

BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad

Nov 16, 2010

The anime which is not like an anime. That is Beck. Beck follows a typical 14 year old Japanese kid who somehow runs into a older, cooler Japanese guy who has been living in America for a few years. The kid gets interested in music, learns to play the guitar and eventually winds up joining a band led by the older guy. Its a bit annoying really that so much is given away in the synopsis of this anime and the opening titles. You know whats going to happen over much of it and you're just waiting for it to come to pass. This series is...very strange. Very strange indeed. Unlike anything I've ever seen... See full review

Rosario + Vampire

Aug 27, 2010

At first I really didn't like this anime. The plot seemed absolutely stupid. Sub-Harry Potter stuff. It was just all...ugh. Crappy.But. I stook at it...And you know. It grew on me.Sure, its formulaic, sure its got the typical cliche of a bunch of girls being mad about a lame guy. But...you don't always want War and Peace. Sometimes you just want a little generic bit of shallow entertainment. The big complaint I have against this anime I must say is one which it seems to think is its main selling point- it increased it for the second series. The fan service. Its just...awful. All the constant underwear shots... See full review
