Now, if you haven’t already seen the front covers to Gantz volume one and Sundome volume one. Let's get one thing strait; Gantz is quite obviously a blood fest shoot 'em up, hence the guns at the top and the read which is splattered. Sundome would seem to be very pornographic. What with the girl touching herself on the cover, if you're not yet convinced about the content of Sundome, turn it over; "An indecent proposal. A far from ordinary girl. Hideo Aiba's boring life just got far more... Frustrating."
The thing that makes Gantz stand out from other mangas is one thing. Try flicking through the pages quickly and you will notice the amount of times boobs pop up. If there was one way to describe Gantz it's this; Violent Porn. No kidding. Opening this book, you come to a page with the main character, Kei, posing with a gun. Skip ahead to the story and there is a picture of a porn magazine. I think it makes it clear what the manga is all about. Another thing to note is that the chapters are random sizes, so don't judge how much you've read by the chapter you're on. The manga has lots of potential, I hope that the manga is different from the anime; I don't even want to go there. Even now me and my friend make reference to Gantz to measure how pornographic a manga is, and I've had this manga for three months now, and finished the anime four or five months ago.
Now to tell you about the misleading covers, I've gone over it briefly but I'm going to focus this paragraph on it. To tell you the truth, I believed that Sundome would have very little story line at all, maybe even none, and expected it to be pretty much porn. But there seems to be a story; it's a strange story that seems to be best described as a guy’s mission to have sex with this girl, or even just wank over her, even though the girl told him that she will never let him cum. There are plenty of spelling mistakes (just to add) such as the spelling of cum being spelt come, which I didn't expect from Yen Press (especially when Dark Horse Manga seems to have no mistakes). At the end, it mentions in the next volume "The patchwork mask OB visit the Roman club" I have to give it credit for this wacky story line. Gantz on the other hand I expected to be mostly violence, I had seen the anime but if I hadn't and wanted a non-stop action I would have been disappointed. Looking at the back cover you can see that it is not going to just be guns but boobs and buts as well. I think I'll add that this manga uses some special, what would have been new at that time, design technique that seemed to take lots of time but produced quite a good outcome, with 3D effects and lighting. The main thing that makes me think the Gantz title as non-porn is that all the people on the cover are men. I really want to round this review off, but there is so much to say about each manga that I couldn't put it all in one. Some time I might take the time out to review them separately.
My next review is decided! I think it's about time to look back to when I started watching anime and reading manga more seriously, Kashimashi Girl meets Girl. I'll be buying this soon and then I'll give you an over view.
