Hi, I'm Ashley. I'm currently in college majoring in history and joined this site to find new anime to watch and to keep track of all the series or movies I've seen. I began watching anime in the late 90s with Sailor Moon, but didn't resume watching it until 2011.

With that out of the way...currently I'm not watching as much anime as I did before because of new interests, new time commitments, and the like. I have a bit of a short attention span with anime so it can take me awhile to complete a series if it doesn't completely blow me away when I begin watching it; that should explain the amount of stalled series I have.

I generally will watch anything if it sounds interesting or I've heard positive things about it. I enjoy watching older anime (despite many people's apparent hatred for it) because I like seeing how the medium has evolved and where popular genres began. I prefer watching shorter series but am not completely closed off to an interesting longer anime (for example, my favorites run the gamut from 12 episodes up to 70.) I have a major soft spot for magical girl anime, probably as a result of Sailor Moon being my gateway series. While I don't mind a well-done darker and edgier (or gorier) anime every so often, I am generally not impressed by them and tend to prefer more positive or lighter anime. I'm also really getting into mecha anime because apparently my love for giant robots has been lying dormant this entire time.

My ratings scale for anime is based on both how much I enjoyed it and how objectively good I thought it was, though personal enjoyment will take precedence. A 5 star is excellent, a 4.5-4 star great, a 3.5 star very good, and a 3 star decent. Anything lower means I found it boring or unengaging and would not rewatch or buy in the future.

Favorite (non-anime) TV shows - Avatar: The Last Airbender, Futurama, Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, Arrested Development, South Park, Mad Men, Firefly, Game of Thrones.

Favorite (non-anime) movies - most Disney and Pixar movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, The Princess Bride, Bonnie and Clyde, Some Like It Hot, Pulp Fiction, Breathless, The Dark Knight trilogy, Iron Man, The Avengers, A Hard Day's Night, Sunset Blvd., Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Inglourious Basterds, Pacific Rim, Kill Bill, Battle Royale. I also have a love for black and white movies and especially silent movies.

Favorite (non-manga) books - Harry Potter series, The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, Pride and Prejudice, My Antonia, Friday Night Lights, To Kill a Mockingbird, Katherine, A Song of Ice and Fire series, lots of historical nonfiction. I also enjoy reading comics; my favorites include Watchmen, Batman: The Long Halloween, and Kingdom Come.

Here's my Tumblr which has overtaken my life.

Arran has lots and LOTS of mountains and hills. Like, there's only one part of it near the arbour for the ferry that actually has food and clothes shops, the rest is just hills. It's also one of my dad's favourite places, like he legit wants to be buried there or have me scatter his ashes there if he can't. Because yeah Dad, I'm really gonna sit for two hours on a ferry with a coffee pot full of your ashes just so I can dump them in the sea when I get there.

Welcome to Night Vale is basically a POV podcast narrated by radiohost named Cecil, it's basically a radio show for the town called night vale and all the weird weird shit that happens there which everyone in universe doesn't find weird. Like a dog park that people claim doesn't exist and a giant glow cloud that drops dead animals from the sky. It's weird, quirky and a bit creepy, hence my love. Plus it features an adorable canon gay couple (Cecil is confirmed gay by the creators and he falls in love with the scientist Carlos when he come to study night vale in episode 1 and they begin dating around episode 27. Carlos is also confirmed gay). It's mostly episodic for the first 16 eps with the weird shit that goes on in night vale then it starts to get really good plot wise with cecil and carlos's relationship starting and weird ass body doubles plauging the town and the rival town Desert Bluffs that is pretty much a brainwashed night vale complete with it's own creepy version of cecil. It's weird and awesome, you should check it out if you have time.

Also, guess what dumbass thing happened to me yesterday. I was trying to turn off the chip pan fryer while in work and I accidently pushed it too hard and the oil splashed out and burned all of my arm and bits of my neck and face. Now my right arm is completely knackered and my face looks like Zuko xD Ended up at the hospital and my arm hurts like shit when I bend it.

Like I said, I think his forte is slow slice of life works, he's really not good with the fantasical big epic stories. Even his visual style, while gorgeous, really doesn't seem to fit those kinds of stories because it feels too detailed and the character designs are always pretty basic which works in slice of life but characters in big epic stories need distinct designs. Designs like Gurren Lagaan or Bebop or even Ghibli which all have really distinct character designs which meant you couldn't mistake them for anyone else. 5cm per second is probably my favourite since I feel he got the slice of life balance just right and I could listen to that ending song in the last 5 minutes forever, it's a gorgeous song.

You're going to japan, you lucky thing! I'm off to Arren again this year, it's a wee island just up the north, we've been a million times. I may not live in the north but I've been on more highland holidays than I can count. I've also started listening to Welcome to Night Vale and I'm already in love, so I better download the episodes before I leave to listen to. Might be able to take my mind of the boat trip since I can't stand boats, I get travel sick real bad.

Thanks, I'll just be moving the newer reviews to this account then delete the old one once I'm done ^^

Yeah, I rewatched the movie and it's definately not the series but it's still pretty entertaining. If the series was trying to make you think, the movie was there to entertain you. And even though Utena is essentially Ikuhara's baby, the series was more of a team effort with the him and the writers and animators wheras the movie felt solely just him and I think he just set to make his vision a reality with no narrative restraints, stuff didn't have to make sense, he could make utena and anthy an official couple, he could pretty much do what he wanted. Yurikuma's very similar (it only has two episodes left and it's definately getting a review when it's done - it's great). I definately think the series is better but the movie is still weird and fun. Also, dat animation.

I'm thinking of doing my next one on garden of words, I bought it for my current boyfriend (I broke up with the previous one a few months ago) and we watched it, it's good and the animation is god-tier (I'm convinced makoto shinkai sold his soul to animate his films), I love his visual style but I'm not crazy about his directing style since his character tend to monolouge all the time and he's good atslice of life stuff because his characters are always blank slates and that makes them more identifiable in things like 5cm per second or Garden of Words but things like the Children of Lost Voices, while it looks amazing, is so obviously out of his comfort zone and trying way too hard to be studio ghibli with chaarcters that are still blank slates so they don't work in a fanasty story. We need characters with personalities to connect to with those type of stories. 5cm per second is still my favourite of his works.

Welp, that's me anyway ^^ Mostly been keeping up with uni and trying to figure out how to do half of these assignments while doing my cafe job as well. It's a wonder I can do anything! How's life over at your end?

Yikes, if you dropped SAO after episode 10, you probably would have killed yourself trying to watch the second half... >_>

Yeah, being one of the latest animes I've watched, let's just say that ending makes your jaw wide opening. The funny thing is that I've never watched anything else Lupin III because the rest of the series never really interested me. There just seems like there's way too many episodes lol. And yes very few anime this decade actually appealed to me (like Steins;Gate, Lupin III, Wolf Children, and Madoka Magica); I'm just waiting for that next masterpiece anime to come out this decade like how FMAB pretty much topped everything in the last decade. Seeing that you rated Baccano! so high, I'm surprised you haven't tried Durarara!!! yet being that they have really similar formats.
