about me

Hi, I'm Ashley. I'm currently in college majoring in history and joined this site to find new anime to watch and to keep track of all the series or movies I've seen. I began watching anime in the late 90s with Sailor Moon, but didn't resume watching it until 2011.

With that out of the way...currently I'm not watching as much anime as I did before because of new interests, new time commitments, and the like. I have a bit of a short attention span with anime so it can take me awhile to complete a series if it doesn't completely blow me away when I begin watching it; that should explain the amount of stalled series I have.

I generally will watch anything if it sounds interesting or I've heard positive things about it. I enjoy watching older anime (despite many people's apparent hatred for it) because I like seeing how the medium has evolved and where popular genres began. I prefer watching shorter series but am not completely closed off to an interesting longer anime (for example, my favorites run the gamut from 12 episodes up to 64.) I have a major soft spot for magical girl anime, probably as a result of Sailor Moon being my gateway series. While I don't mind a well-done darker and edgier (or gorier) anime every so often, I am generally not impressed by them and tend to prefer more positive or lighter anime. I'm also really getting into mecha anime because apparently my love for giant robots has been lying dormant this entire time.

My ratings scale for anime is based on both how much I enjoyed it and how objectively good I thought it was, though personal enjoyment will take precedence. A 5 star is excellent, a 4.5-4 star great, a 3.5 star very good, and a 3 star decent. Anything lower means I found it boring or unengaging and would not rewatch or buy in the future.

Favorite (non-anime) TV shows - Avatar: The Last Airbender (my absolute favorite of anything ever), Futurama, Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, Arrested Development, South Park, Mad Men, Doctor Who, Firefly.

Favorite (non-anime) movies - most Disney and Pixar movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, The Princess Bride, Battle Royale, Pulp Fiction, Breathless, The Dark Knight trilogy, Iron Man, The Avengers, A Hard Day's Night, Sunset Blvd., Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Inglourious Basterds, Pacific Rim. I also have a love for black and white movies and especially silent movies.

Favorite (non-manga) books - Harry Potter series, The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, Pride and Prejudice, My Antonia, Friday Night Lights, To Kill a Mockingbird. I also enjoy reading comics though I'm a newbie when it comes to them; my favorite is Batman: The Long Halloween.

I play video games a bit, mostly the Legend of Zelda or the Batman Arkham games.

Here's my Tumblr which has overtaken my life.

And my exams are DONE! Man that feels so good to write... all the things to do. Also, expect to see some new reviews within the next few weeks, I'm so happy to finally write again! :D Kill la Kill is first on my list, after that it'll be WATAMOTE and I've got some more listed along with bebop (I know, the review is about a year late. Shame on me D:). I'm also thinking of doing a Studio Ghibli Couples series on my tumblr, where I write an essay for each of my favourite ghibli couples and why I love them so much. I'm all full of ambition now that I'm a free agent for the next three months. Now if only I could get a job...

And I've heard that there's going to be some angst planned for Nagisa in season 2 and some more nagisa centric episodes so that'll be interesting to see! I just hope they don't hurt my baby too badly... at least Rei will always be there for him ^^ And there better be a date episode with Gou and Swim captain, complete with Rin hiding in the bushes with binoculars cursing under his breath.

I finished the first season of Black Lagoon and it got so much better after the Nazi arc, which was the weakest arc IMO. Roberta was awesome and the last two episodes were great too. Revy and her constant use of profanity was still hilarious. XD I will get to Second Barrage hopefully in a week or less (watching Princess Tutu atm and it's blowing my mind XD. Seriously, I never thought any mahou shoujo could match Madoka Magica, but clearly I was mistaken.) Anyways, I am curious as to why you'd rate Second Barrage lower than the first season when it's actually rated like twice as high on Anime Planet, but I'll see for myself.

And I just took the AP US History test a few days ago and I seriously lucked out. The FRQs were on how the colonists were impacted by religion and how reconstruction affected African Americans. Thank god it wasn't anything after World War II XD or I would have been totally screwed haha. I think I got a 4! (but I'll find out in July)

Great Recommendations!

I started watching Black Lagoon and it's definitely entertaining so far (only on episode 5). The fact of how so much happens within the first two episodes was entertaining and Revy's constant profanity makes it even more hilarious. XD I do appreciate its episodic nature because it makes the show less predictable overall IMO.

And thanks! APs have been really stressful so far and tomorrow is my last (done with apush after tomorrow lol) and good job passing on passing Lang, Psychology and government. I'm planning to take ap psychology next year because I heard the multiple choice counts for 65% of the test and you just need to memorize to do well.

Great Recommendations!

Thanks for the recommendation! It means a lot to find a show that I feel like I won't be wasting too much time with. Yeah I sort of looked into it; it looks like an anime that'd appeal more to the Western crowd than not, something that Trigun, Bebop and Champloo did successfully. I will definitely try it and let you know how it goes, but it's going to be a while haha. If I would recommend an anime that I feel could suit your tastes, I think you might enjoy Escaflowne. It's an old mecha anime that incorporates a lot of things into just 26 episodes. And it also appeals to both males and females.

The weird thing is that the dub actually got much better when the utena movie came out. I still prefer the sub but there was definately a noticeable up in quality even though the movie only came out two years after the show. Miki's voice still sounded off but there was still a definate improvement, especially with Utena's voice.

And I've had to drop a lot of anime I'm watching right now because I'm right in the middle of my exams but I've made up a list of anime to both watch and review over the summer so I'll finish kill la kill then most likely, along with a lot of other shows I've been meaning to watch. And oh my god, thos video games are brilliant. Roy and Riza, just WAT xD

Also, FREE SEASON 2 CONFIRMED OMG I'm so excited, I want my seigou and reigisa moments, I want my adorable makoto moments and there's also a new character and Miho and Gou are just so cute and I'll stop now because I'm way too excited and just rambling
