The story in Now and Then, Here and There is remarkable. It brings together a tragic darkness, that comes with war, and depicts all the emotional, psycological, and physical afflictions that are associated war. It is only 13 episodes, so it doesn't have any unnecessary scenes that don't do anything for the show itself. Every scene was needed in some way to bring together the character development, the plot, etc., and it was fascinating to watch. With every episode you saw something that really moved you, in some way shape or form, whether it was sad and painful to watch, or beautiful and motivational.
The animation was fairly bland, even for a 1999-2000 series... It wasn't really amazing, or exceptional to the eye, but it still wasn't something that was painful to watch either. The characters were fair, and the backgrounds were slightly monotonous, and it was lacking any vivid color, yet the show was able to use the animation to set the mood for the scene, which is a step in the right direction.
The sound was pleasant, really bringing a sad tone to the sad moments, and happy falcetto, during moments of triumph. The show brought a lot of violins and piano, which are exceptional for dreary, mysterious, suspenceful, and sad moments, but can get old after a while without any change.
The characters are excellent. Shu was a little annoying in the first episode, but after understanding his behaviour, he is a person that touches the heart through his strong will and good natured heart. Then there are other characters like Nabuca and Tabool who are part of the army that wants to destroy everything and rule the world, yet they have a story as well, and their story is developed very well without actually spending a lot of time on it. The series did an excellent job of showing how they became who they are, and really brought them close to your heart as well, especially Nabuca.
Lala-Ru's sad and quiet nature throughout the story seemed a little off at first, however after realizing all that she had really gone through, when she explains her story to Shu, everything about her seems perfect. The way she so cynical, and never smiles bring a definitive explination to her character, once again, without spending too much time on her past. Finally, Sara was a character who was not shown a lot during the series, but played an imortant role. The hardships she went through, and the final decision she makes, tells wonders of her personality. Though she has gone through hell and high water to become who she is, she chooses to leave the past and try to do good in the world.
Overall this show was a must see if you like dark and deep war stories. This show does an excellent job of developing the characters in a way that shows a person what affect war really has on the people who are involved with it. Furthermore, it shows that no matter what the situation is, no matter what the world has come to, that there still are, and always will be good people in the world. Bringing together an excellent story with excellent characters, putting in some decent music, with a fair animation gives this anime a: 8.25/10
