Haunted Junction

Aug 27, 2004

Story
Haunted Junction is basically an episodic random jaunt into the world of a haunted school and its ghosts. The only humans that we really see are Hojo, Mutsuki, and Kazumi, and then a ton of spirits and ghosts. For quite a few episodes I thought that they would literally be the ONLY humans we are introduced to, but near the end, there are a few brief encounters with other school goers. The story begins with Hojo and his two companions tracking down the 7 badges of the school. Each of these is able to summon one of the school spirits, who are all a motley crew to begin with. Each episode deals... See full review

Hamtaro OVA 1: Hamtaro's Birthday! 3000 Hammy Steps in Search of Mommy

Mar 30, 2008

Story
In the world of adult anime otaku, there are a few franchises that no "respecting" fan would lay eyes upon: Pokemon, Digimon, and Dragon Ball Z are three such examples. However, there's one franchise that even Pokemon lovers tend to avoid: Hamtaro, the lovable hamster! Since the AniRec didn't have any Hamtaro entries, I decided to track down the movies and OVAs to add them myself, and ran across this rarity. I expected garbage, but what I got was something much better. Hamtaro's Birthday is a delightful yet surprisingly melancholy story for the young ones.Lighthearted and... See full review

Higan

Apr 8, 2005

Story
I’m a big fan of pretty much anything Studio 4C, so needless to say, I jumped at the chance to watch Higan. Don’t get me wrong, the "story" (if you want to call it that) wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t substantial in any way, so I can’t really score this section highly.

In a nutshell, there are two guys in mecha fighters that are fighting some armored tanks.

... no, really, that’s all there is. With the exception of a short sequence at the end that might be considered "sad" (if it was actually longer than seven minutes and actually had a plot), this is... See full review

Horus: Prince of the Sun

Oct 24, 2004

Story
Adventures of Horus is a fairly generic tale of a young boy who must overcome various challenges to defeat a trademark evil being. The story has nothing to do with egyptian mythology, so if you were interested in this title because of the name Horus, turn back now!

The beginning of the movie reminded me a lot of the beginning of Future Boy Conan, with a boy witnessing his father dying, and being told to run off to find others of his kind. After this point, Horus runs into the great demon himself, and it seems that the story will be exciting and action-packed all the way through... See full review

His and Her Circumstances

Sep 11, 2004

Story
Kare Kano was recommended to me by quite a few people as another good look at relationships, in a realistic way. Perhaps I expected too much, but I came into it thinking it would be a relationship series. I was wrong.

While the first under 10 episodes do focus primarily on the two main characters becoming involved, barely any serious mention of the relationship happens after the fact. There are a few minor exceptions later on, but the overall tone changes quickly from "wow, this could be a great relationship series", to "random filler comedy". Keep in mind, the comedy isn't even... See full review

Harukanaru Toki no Naka de ~Ajisai Yumegatari~

Aug 7, 2005

Story
HELLO, FUSHIGI YUUGI RIPOFF! Seriously, if you've seen FY, you'd recognize the similarity just based on the description above. Think of FY without the sappy romance, without whiny Miaka, and in 2 episodes, and you've got Harukanaru. Even though I hated FY, I still think it was better than this. Let's start with the fact that there are gaping plot holes a mile wide, and a story which jumps all over the place. It begins with Asuza and her two friends falling into the well, and then the opening music/scene plays. After, without any explanation, Azusa is wandering around with her companions (who... Hanoka

Dec 31, 2007

Story
I'd really like to start out this review with a quirky statement about Hanoka, but I can't; instead, I'll sum up the series in one word: boooooooooring!Hanoka is a twelve-episode series that spans approximately forty minutes in length, with about six total minutes of recap included. The entirety of the story revolves around the rather tired concept of galactic beings who want to destroy the pestilence that is humanity. But wait! Thrown in for good measure is a strongly-implied shoujo-ai relationship between a generic weapon-being and a human - how original! [note: after writing this... See full review
