FLCL

Sep 25, 2004

Story
First and foremost, I want to say how difficult this review is to write, because I didn’t like FLCL that much at all. But, I can still see it for what it is: a great piece of work, so I have to adjust my scores accordingly and not simply rate low based on my own preference. That being said, I am going to write myself off as one of the many people who "didn’t get it" (re: the story) after seeing this one time through. FLCL is NOT something to watch if you want a cut and dry story, or even a confusing story that eventually makes sense. I like confusing stories, I really do. Take Paranoia... See full review

Marriage

Sep 25, 2004

Story
Remember after school specials? Yeah, you know the ones... where Becky huffed gasoline and had to go to the hospital, or James smoked pot and ended up behind bars. The message? Don’t do drugs! These public service announcements full of government propaganda were on TV all the time, feeding the minds of youngsters. And now, folks, I am proud to announce a public service announcement from the Japanese government: GET MARRIED, NOW! Missed it on TV? That’s ok, you can always go rent "Marriage", a 2 part OVA, to hear this message loud and clear from the comfort of your own home! But wait... See full review

Vampire Wars

Sep 17, 2004

Story
I'll admit, when I turned on Vampire Wars I expected something really stupid. It surely would have something to do with vampires fighting humans or something contrived and generic, and would be an utter waste of time. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered I was wrong! In fact, Vampire Wars ends up having a very interesting plot, namely about where the vampires came from, why they are on Earth, why they suck people's blood, etc. Obviously I won't give it away in a review, but let's just say it was very unique and original, to say the least. Prior to finding out those tidbits, it does... See full review

Suddenly Princess

Sep 17, 2004

Story
When I first picked this up, I was very concerned that it would be shoujo. Because hey, I really don’t like shoujo, and with a name like Suddenly Princess, does anything else come to mind? Thankfully, I was very wrong.

Suddenly Princess isn’t a show filled with plot, period. There are no twists, dark secrets, and there isn’t a substantial amount of character development (or any, for that matter). The OVA is of the random comedy type, and succeeds at it well. The entire premise is a bit unusual, and you get the idea that it is fairly random from the get-go. Lapis is a pretty... Dark Cat

Sep 17, 2004

Story
Dark Cat was just... weird. I can’t really think of any other way to put it, because it’s the best word to describe it. I am sitting here wondering who came up with this plot in the first place, because it seems kind of random. We have the concept that evil invades people’s spirits through their dark feelings (and positive ones too, sometimes). And for the sake of the Dark Cat OVA (and many other older horror series, for that matter), the evil manifests itself in gore-like appendages, taking over the human body and turning them into something unrecognizable and disgusting. Now, had it... See full review

Sukeban Deka

Sep 17, 2004

Story
Sukeban Deka is a very dark look at a variety of things: friendships gone bad, crime families, a bit of supernatural powers, and a bad girl who is really a good person at heart, who has fallen through the cracks of the system. I’m not sure why the story appealed to me so much, because the story isn’t necessarily completely unique. I’ve seen series that deal with crime families, but never dealing with high schoolers in a situation involving deaths of children and students. I’ve seen series that deal with people getting out of jail to become temporary cops (to earn their release), but... See full review

Ariel

Sep 15, 2004

Story
Ariel starts out on a very promising note. A jovial narrator introduces all the main characters (and secondary characters, really). Each of them has something "unfortunate" related to them. For example, one of the girls is unfortunate because she wants to study, and has to pilot Ariel (the All Round Intercept and Escort Lady... I am not joking) instead. We are even introduced to the entire alien staff (who all look like elves, I might add), right down to the budget coordinator. The first scene we see as part of the actual story, is the alien ship launching several alien creatures down to the... See full review

Elementalors

Sep 14, 2004

Story
Ok, seriously... I have NO IDEA how to write this review, as I had almost no idea what the plot was about. The beginning starts off in a relatively normal manner. Young Kagura was in love with a beautiful friend of his, who was married to a different friend. This male friend was killed in a car crash with Kagura, but only Kagura survived, and the blame was placed on him. Unfortunately, the woman was so distraught that she killed herself, and hence, the start of the movie. (Don't worry, all of this is explained within the first 1 minute of the movie, so it isn't really spoiling.) Now... See full review

Cleopatra D.C.

Sep 11, 2004

Story
First, it should be known that this OVA is 30 minutes for the first two parts, and 50 minutes for the last part.

Cleopatra DC follows the pattern of other short OVAs of this type, where each episode deals with the same characters, but a different storyline, sort of like watching any syndicated TV show. The background of the characters, unfortunately is not only unbelievable, but is silly, nonetheless. Cleopatra Corns (sucks to be the person with that name) is somehow the head of a large conglomerate called Cleopatra DC. Now, all things aside, there is never any explanation why... See full review

His and Her Circumstances

Sep 11, 2004

Story
Kare Kano was recommended to me by quite a few people as another good look at relationships, in a realistic way. Perhaps I expected too much, but I came into it thinking it would be a relationship series. I was wrong.

While the first under 10 episodes do focus primarily on the two main characters becoming involved, barely any serious mention of the relationship happens after the fact. There are a few minor exceptions later on, but the overall tone changes quickly from "wow, this could be a great relationship series", to "random filler comedy". Keep in mind, the comedy isn't even... See full review

Baby Love

Sep 9, 2004

Story
Baby Love unfortunately suffers from the young adult codependant love interest syndrome. While normal and stable adolescents/teenagers might have a crush that lasts awhile, most (at least I hope) don't become completely obsessive and secretive about convincing someone to look their way. In addition, I rarely hear 16 year olds talking about how they would die for someone they barely know, and only met briefly when they were 12. But for anime, especially romance ones? This is totally fair game, as it is in the case of Baby Love. For the obsessive nature it reminded me quite a bit of Fashion Boy... See full review

Galerians: Rion

Sep 7, 2004

Story
When I first started watching Galerians, I thought to myself "wow, this sure reminds me of Resident Evil!" Sure enough, I then did a bit of brief research and discovered that this is based on the first of the Galerians games of the same name, Galerians: Rion. Supposedly the film is made up of the various CG parts of the game (though extended in some cases), and additional CG is added for parts that you’d normally play in the game (but aren’t CG in the game). It’s good to know this ahead of time, because the story does have a very distinct game-like feel to it. If you didn’t know this... See full review

Azusa Will Help!

Sep 6, 2004

Story
Azusa Will Help is a fairly light hearted look at a supposedly futuristic society that has robots as a commonplace occurance. I say supposedly because although the year is 2099, you really can't tell at all, except for the addition of the robots. Anyways, these robots range from maids (no, really?!) to the more important sports playing robots, which vary in skill and power depending on, you guessed it, the cost.
The story focuses on Karu Duck High (wtf kind of a name is that?!), a semi-poor baseball team who wants to make it big. Unluckily for them, Eagle High has already purchased... See full review

Megami Paradise

Sep 6, 2004

Story
I just need to say that I wish there was some form of mental enema I could take before writing this review. I also wish that I had a small time machine that would allow me to go back in time one hour, and allow me to relive that part of my life, free of Megami Paradise’s cruel torture. That, or the notion that I could perhaps force its creators to eat vomit, since that’s about how bad this excuse for an anime was.
*cough* That being said, I’ll attempt to explain why the "plot" of Megami Paradise was as ridiculous as it was. First of all, there are several words that I think... See full review

Pugyuru

Aug 27, 2004

Story
I think it should be immediately said that Pugyuru has no plot. At all. The entire "story" consists of pure randomness, revolving around small happenings in the life of a girl whose name starts with "Ma" (you never find out the rest). The episodes are also only about 3 minutes long, making the entire series taking up a mere 1.5 normal episodes worth of viewing material. At least 4 episodes revolve around meeting new characters, such as the squid, the bully, and the snow spirit. There are also quite a few episodes which delve into trying to figure out exactly what Cheko-chan really is! There's... See full review

Haunted Junction

Aug 27, 2004

Story
Haunted Junction is basically an episodic random jaunt into the world of a haunted school and its ghosts. The only humans that we really see are Hojo, Mutsuki, and Kazumi, and then a ton of spirits and ghosts. For quite a few episodes I thought that they would literally be the ONLY humans we are introduced to, but near the end, there are a few brief encounters with other school goers. The story begins with Hojo and his two companions tracking down the 7 badges of the school. Each of these is able to summon one of the school spirits, who are all a motley crew to begin with. Each episode deals... See full review
