Death Note

Nov 23, 2009

Story When it comes to Death Note, the masses have spoken: it's a groundbreaking, gripping tale of deceit and intrigue that will keep you at the edge of your seat from start to end. With one of the highest average ratings on Anime-Planet and a level of hype that treads dangerously close to that of Naruto, Death Note has been deemed a "must-see", a "triumph", and "a series that no anime fan should be without". Except that it’s not. I’m not sure if my perception of reality is fatally flawed or if Death Note’s prominent... See full review

Detective Conan OVA 7: A Challenge from Agasa

May 21, 2008

Story
Yawwwwwn. As specified in one of my previous Detective Conan OVA reviews, I have a firm belief that each OVA became successively worse. While none of the OVAs could beat Detective Conan OVA 5 in suckage level, Detective Conan: A Challenge from Agasa (aka Detective Conan OVA 7) comes dangerously close. The initial premise is boring from the get-go: the Professor has been kidnapped and wants the children's help in saving him. Of course, he's given them various clues to help them along their way, and Conan and company use their powers of deduction to decipher said clues, as always. Soon... See full review

Detective Conan OVA 5: The Target is Kogoro! The Detective Boys' Secret Investigation

May 21, 2008

Story
I'm starting to think that each Detective Conan OVA is destined to become progressively worse. The first OVA was outstanding, the second was interesting, and from there on out they began to suck in various ways. Detective Conan: The Target is Kogoro! The Detective Boys' Secret Investigation (say that five times fast!) easily wins the award for the most boring, uninteresting Detective Conan OVA I've seen thus far. The first five minutes peg Detective Conan OVA 5 as being far more of a side story than a standalone feature. Sure, there's a mystery to be solved and bad guys to take... See full review

Detective Conan OVA 3: Conan and Heiji and the Vanished Boy

May 21, 2008

Story
On my quest to add every Detective Conan OVA to the database, I inevitably ran across Detective Conan: Conan and Heiji and the Vanished Boy (aka Detective Conan OVA 3); while the most sentimental yet of the Detective Conan OVAs, it also proved to be one of the less interesting attempts. The first problem is the story: while only thirty minutes in length, it's disjointed and somewhat random. Conan and Ran have traveled to Osaka and, as always, run into a mystery they can't refuse. First, they meet three children who have a strange resemblance to their friends at home. Is there a reason... See full review

Detective Conan OVA 2: 16 Suspects

May 21, 2008

Story
Like a good detective story, tasty food, and expensive wine? Look no further than Detective Conan: 16 Suspects (aka Detective Conan OVA 2). Unlike the comedic romp of Detective Conan OVA 1, Detective Conan OVA 2 is much more of a traditional Detective Conan watch. The gang has been invited to Inspector Shiratori's house to celebrate the building's completion, and what follows is a party gone wrong. His expensive wine bottle is broken, and everyone is a culprit! As always, Conan must use his powers of deduction to figure out what truly happened - with Heiji's help. Like most Conan... Detective Conan OVA 1: Conan VS Kid VS Yaiba Houtou Soudatsu Daikessen!!

May 20, 2008

Story
Normally, a Detective Conan episode or movie is a thrilling, harrowing ride filled with clues to follow and a mystery to solve. While Detective Conan - Conan vs Kid vs Yaiba (aka OVA 1) has none of these qualities, those who enjoy a good dose of wackiness and zany fun will surely appreciate its merits.Detective Conan's creator was also at the helm of Yaiba - a comedic tale of the son of a swordsman and his exotic animal friends who take residence in Japan. Detective Conan OVA 1 merges this story and the story of Detective Conan together in a rather hilarious way: Conan is dying to read the... See full review

Demonbane OVA

Aug 7, 2005

Story
The first thing I'll say is that the story score would probably be higher if I understood a lot of what was going on. Since this is a standard length 1 episode OVA, you merely see the tip of the iceberg of what the story could be. Many characters are introduced, many names of projects and secrets are given but not explained. But the crux of the story, at least for most of the OVA, revolves around Lily and Kuro, trying to track down the ellusive Demonbane. I must say, this OVA was incredibly entertaining on basically every level, so even though the story was a bit confusing, it managed to... See full review

Delpower X Bakuhatsu Miracle Genki!

Aug 7, 2005

Story
Hmm, where to begin with this one. Well, what kind of OVA *is* Del Power X, exactly? It definitely has mecha, it also has some bits of random off the wall comedy (usually related to parodies, or just wacky like Abenobashi or the like). I'd say the first half of the 40 minute OVA is undoubtedly better than the second, as it has most of the funny comedy (though there isn't a huge amount, just so you know), as well as funny things with the mecha. But the second half is mostly just Manami fighting and not knowing what to do, against all sorts of people-in-mecha-suits that I'm still not sure where... See full review

Don't Lose, Makendo!

Aug 7, 2005

Story
On the surface, Don't Lose Makendo doesn't appear to have a very unique plot. And in this case, if you thought that, you'd be right! Definitely not anything special or unusual if you get down to it. If I had to discuss genres, I'd say it seems like a Ghostbustersish comedic action flick, with plenty of jokes and funny monsters to go around. A bit of magical girl transformations as well, and even a mecha to boot. Again, sort of a mix of everything, which makes it not so unique.

Then why the 6.5? It was difficult picking between that and a 7 simply for one aspect: entertainment... See full review

Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes

Aug 7, 2005

Story
There are good fantasy series out there: Escaflowne, El Hazard, Record of Lodoss War, Five Star Stories, to name a few. Then there are bad, average, and totally generic series such as Dragon Slayer. The story, to start out with, is unforgettable and boring. Evil demon takes over kingdom, young prince escapes, grows up, comes back to kill demon and save kingdom. Add swords and monsters and mix well. There truly is nothing unusual or unique to mention about the story. You could watch one or more of any of the above series I listed, and already have seen enough fantasy to not have to suffer... See full review

Delinquent in Drag

Aug 7, 2005

Story
Sounds like a fairly entertaining OVA, right? Unfortunately, it doesn't end up being nearly as amusing as it could have been. The only similar series that comes to mind is I My Me! Strawberry Eggs, which I really disliked. But even with that series, it had humor that I enjoyed to some extent, or original type jokes, slapstick humor, etc. Delinquent in Drag, though it could have had a variety of things, really had none of this. The 40 minutes consisted of Bunji trying to shove his face in girls' behinds or breasts, very blatantly, not even in a subtle or humorous fashion. He also managed to get... See full review

Devilman: The Birth

Apr 16, 2005

Story
Lions and tigers and demons, oh my! I’m not sure where the roots of demonic horror come from in anime, but it seems like Devilman (the TV series, at least, made in the 70s) must be one of the first. Created by Go Nagai (of crappy anime fame such as Kekko Kamen, Plastic Little, and anything else with excessive nudity), Devilman is actually quite unique in the fact that it isn’t 100% ecchi. Admittedly, it’s quite a bit ecchi, but nothing like the other Go Nagai titles I’ve had the pleasure of watching.

The story is quite simple, so instead of describing it in detail I... See full review

Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei

Apr 9, 2005

Story
The Megami Tensei OVA is an interesting one, that’s for sure. Nakajima is a computer hacker of sorts who has bound himself to reviving Loki, a demon he communicates with through his computer. The story begins with Yumiko, a quiet girl, transferring to his school, though she has no idea what she’s getting herself into, to say the least. Loki requires sacrifices, and needless to say, some of the students end up dying in a very graphic manner.

I knew from the beginning that this OVA was based on the Megami Tensei games (of which, to this date, the USA has only seen two released... See full review

Dragon Half

Apr 3, 2005

Story
I’ve heard about Dragon Half for quite some time now, and have seen it recommended for a variety of series I’ve enjoyed. Thus, I finally decided to pick it up, and I’m glad I did.

Dragon Half follows the life of Mink, a half human/half dragon, as she tries her best to get the attention of Dick Saucer, a dragon slayer with a penchant for music and concerts. Due to her small problem of being half dragon, this of course causes plenty of mayhem to occur including assassination attempts on Mink’s life, rivalry from the princess of the kingdom who herself is half human/half... D.N.Angel

Mar 19, 2005

Story
As a big warning ahead of time, this will be a very, very difficult series to assess. Though I had high hopes for DNAngel, there were so many things about this series that tarnish it, that I can't expect giving a high score in most categories. That being said, the story:

Niwa Daisuke is a "nice guy". You know the type: super quiet and shy, a pushover for anything that has a vagina (especially the popular girl he has a crush on), and in general, very... nice. He also has a strange dysfunctional family consisting of mom and grandfather, who constantly turn the house into a... See full review

Dragon Century

Jan 27, 2005

Story
Wow. I was told to watch Dragon Century from a friend that has similar tastes, but I must say I was skeptical. I've seen quite a few older series and for the most part, I've found that most of them are quite crappy or uninteresting, or crude in some fashion. What a surprise when I finished watching Dragon Century and found myself thinking "wow, that was fantastic!" It's very hard to describe the plot of Dragon Century, since the two episodes have hundreds of years between them, and have a very unique feel. In the first episode, we see a very apocalyptic look at Hokkaido, where... See full review

DNA² OVA

Jan 26, 2005

Story
Originally, this three part OVA was actually the last three episodes of the TV series. For some reason it was made into an OVA (an utterly useless one, I might add), and thus I'm reviewing it seperately. The 12 TV episodes end off nicely, yet open ended for another season. The issues with the Mega-Playboy have been resolved (but I won't say how, in case you are reading this without having seen the TV series), everyone is happy and taken care of, and all is well. But like El Hazard Magnificent World, Fushigi Yuugi and a number of other series, the creators just had to throw on some extra crap at... See full review

DNA²

Jan 26, 2005

Story
As the name would imply, DNA is about ... dna! Specifically, the dna of a young man named Junta who is destined to become the Mega-Playboy. In the future, the world is overpopulated and this Mega-Playboy is the most notorious cause, having fathered 100 children, who each had 100 children, and so on! Karin is sent back in time to stop Junta from becoming the Mega-Playboy, and thus the story begins...

The saving grace of DNA is definitely the humor that stems from Junta's affliction. Whenever he sees a woman's body or anything remotely close to sexual, he vomits everywhere... See full review

Demon Fighter Kocho

Jan 8, 2005

Story
Demon Fighter Kocho is a 30 minute 1 episode OVA that feels a lot like Haunted Junction, but is a lot more ecchi and a lot less funny. Our story begins (and ends) at Heian University, where a rash of ghost hauntings have been reported. The school happens to have an Astrology club that investigates such matters, made up of Kocho (who can't seem to keep her clothes on for various reasons), her little sister Koran (who sleeps around), and the perpetually horny Kosaku and club president.

Due to its length, there really isn't a great deal of plot. Various bad spirits cause problems... See full review

Dead Leaves

Dec 30, 2004

Story
Dead Leaves is weird.

Now that that's been said, let's discuss why. First of all, the plot of Dead Leaves doesn't really matter. This movie was obviously made for the animation, plain and simple. That being said, even if you wanted to understand the plot, it's not so easy, given the extremely unique animation style and the high octane feel and pacing of the anime. In general, Pandy and Retro are two "people" of sorts that awaken on Earth, naked. They don't know who they are or why they are there, and shortly after they run off on a crime spree. They are captured, and sent to... See full review

Dallos

Oct 17, 2004

Story
Oh dear me... where to begin. As the description states, men have been working on the moon for a few generations, and have been reduced to slaves, essentially. Their only hope is a large and mysterious structure named Dallos, which is worshipped as a god, by some. The question of "why" is never really explained, nor are we ever privy to the reasons why this structure is somewhat sentient as well. Regardless, the moon men have decided to rebel, and one neutral man named Shun is thrown right into the middle of it.

I'll say up front that it's very difficult for me to say positive... See full review

Dark Cat

Sep 17, 2004

Story
Dark Cat was just... weird. I can’t really think of any other way to put it, because it’s the best word to describe it. I am sitting here wondering who came up with this plot in the first place, because it seems kind of random. We have the concept that evil invades people’s spirits through their dark feelings (and positive ones too, sometimes). And for the sake of the Dark Cat OVA (and many other older horror series, for that matter), the evil manifests itself in gore-like appendages, taking over the human body and turning them into something unrecognizable and disgusting. Now, had it... See full review
