Pinky Street

Apr 12, 2008

Story
Have you ever wanted to watch Barbie on the big screen? Replace the American staple with a line of dolls called Pinky Street, and you have this cute, yet relatively shallow anime. While Pinky Street has two episodes, each is a completely separate story - the two together totaling only thirty minutes in length. The first episode follows a girl who has a tomboy reputation and a desire to immerse herself in the world of fashion; and the second follows a Pinky Street fanboy who has just gotten into a fight with his friend. In each episode the characters are taken to Pinky Town where they partake in... See full review

Paprika

May 4, 2007

Story
I am a rather non-typical anime watcher. I don't strive to watch every romance or harem anime that exists, nor do I enjoy generic shounen fighting series. Intellectual and thought-provoking science fiction and fantasy are my favorites, above all else. Thus, when I saw that another title from the legendary Satoshi Kon was soon to be released in theaters, I was elated. The man who created such gems as Paranoia Agent, Tokyo Godfathers and Perfect Blue was sure to produce another masterpiece, right?Alas; watching Kon's newest movie Paprika can be summed up in two words: completely... Paradise Kiss

Mar 5, 2007

Story
When I was 21 and a great deal more naive, I was in a relationship that I shouldn’t have been in, with a man who was not right for me. He was a player, spoke sweet nothings into my ear and set off multitudes of red flags in my mind; nevertheless, I couldn’t resist, and was drawn to him like a moth to a flame. It ended, of course, in a less than desirable manner, and I questioned myself for some time as to why I let myself become involved. If you are a woman, odds are you’ve had a similar kind of experience. Perhaps it’s for this reason that watching Paradise Kiss... See full review

Paranoia Agent

Aug 7, 2005

Story
Paranoia Agent is a brilliant, intelligent story that is extremely hard to explain without spoiling. The general story revolves around what you see above: people are being randomly attacked by Shounen Bat. But around episode 5 or 6, a new plotline evolves, which becomes very enthralling and in depth. By the end, fear not, the main idea of the story is revealed, but you are indeed left with many questions, twilight zone style.

In general, the story is presented in an AMAZING way. It's hard to explain why the story flowed as good as it did. Each episode almost seemed like an... See full review

Puppet Princess

Aug 7, 2005

Story
Puppet Princess easily has one of the most messed up and unique plots I've seen. At first glance, it only seems somewhat unusual... evil sentient puppets, murderous revenge, etc. I won't spoil, but I'll tell you that when the true nature of the puppets is revealed, you will think differently about the morbid level of the plot. ;) For someone like me who loves horror, this was a real treat... not only for the idea, but for the execution of it and the flow. The animation definitely had a part to play in my opinion of the story, so this is a fairly mixed score as far as where it came from... See full review

Princess Minerva

Apr 15, 2005

Story
When I first picked up Princess Minerva, I had no idea what it would be about (except that I knew it was fantasy related). My viewing began in a positive fashion, but eventually spiraled down into boring-ville.

The story starts off with a brash and spunky Princess Minerva literally ripping through the title screen (humorous for sure) to announce that she wants a group of bodyguards. Blue Morris (who chooses these names?!), her sidekick, listens begrudgingly and then Minerva begins to laugh... and laugh, and laugh in slow motion while the screen pans away. This is just the... Professor Dan Petory's Blues

Mar 20, 2005

Story
I love anything Studio 4C, for the most part. Digital Juice is the only thing I’ve seen that I haven’t enjoyed very much (though I still think I enjoyed it more than this), so needless to say, I was excited to see this had come out. What I walked away with was a feeling of disappointment.

As far as a plot, you’ll have a hard time finding one. Then again, Studio 4C shorts aren’t necessarily known for their high amount of content, but still, I was expecting something a little better. The overall "plot", if there is one, is a hand puppet explaining (or discussing briefly)... See full review

Phoenix 2772

Jan 20, 2005

Story
Prior to viewing this film, I had already seen the Hi no Tori TV series. The TV series is focused on several different stories that all lead back to the same topic: the phoenix. This movie (the first of the Hi no Tori line) is quite different, focusing instead on a single story with a very sci fi feel.

Humans are grown in test tubes, and raised by only robots until they reach maturity. I seriously wonder why these teenagers aren't completely stunted as far as social skills and emotional growth, but somehow, they seem to be normal human beings once they are let out of the lifelong... Phantom: The Animation

Dec 26, 2004

Story
Within the first three minutes of the first episode, I knew this would be something that kicked ass. Thankfully enough, I wasn't mistaken.

Phantom takes place in Los Angeles, where a young man whose name we don't know (though based on other reviews I've seen, I guess his name is Reiji) has come to visit from Japan. The reason seems to be something related to being accepted to a school. I don't believe the school is in LA, though the details aren't totally clear, and don't really matter anyways. Our young protagonist is dropped off in the middle of nowhere by his inept taxi driver... See full review

Perfect Blue

Nov 25, 2004

Story
Set in present day (some years ago, of course), Mima is a well-loved pop idol who loves singing in Cham, a somewhat-unknown singing group who still manage to have a great deal of admirers -- as well as an expected amount of fanboy stalkers. In a career move that stumps all who know her, Mima decides to become an actress, leaving her idol lifestyle behind -- and thus the downward spiral begins. With newfound fame comes obsession, and Mimirun seems to have acquired her own dangerous stalker set on convincing her to return to her old role. With death threats, letter bombs, and a website... Psychic Wars

Nov 23, 2004

Story
*Dies laughing*. Oh dear lord... where to begin. Psychic Wars is easily one of the worst things I've ever seen, and only Baoh rivals it. When I say bad, I don't mean terrible Angelique or Wild Cardz unwatchable bad, I mean hilarious YOU MUST SEE THIS bad, like something you'd see on MST3K, but way funnier.

The "plot" revolves around Ukyo, who somehow gets imbued with some sort of psychic power (that just gives him an outer or inner glow of sorts and lets him punch hard) that's to be used to destroy some demons in the past. Who gives him these powers? Five or six old women who are... See full review

Panzer Dragoon

Oct 26, 2004

Story
Oh lord... where to begin. Well, I suppose my task is easy, given the fact that there was essentially NO STORY. I could dictate the history of how this piece of bread ended up on my computer desk longer than I could describe the story of Panzer Dragoon. *Clutches head in pain.* No, seriously folks, this OVA was bad, just bad. The OVA itself is based off of the Sega games, I guess. I haven't played the games so I couldn't tell you which one it's based off of (if any), or if it's just a loose interpretation. In general, we have Kyle and his blind girlfriend Alita who are flying around on a dragon... See full review

Princess Arete

Oct 3, 2004

Story
This beautiful tale was created by Studio 4C, the makers of Comedy, End of the World, and other titles. The important thing to note is that Princess Arete is not a story based heavily on plot, but rather, heavy (but subtle) character development, beautiful imagery, and most importantly: ideas and concepts about our roles in life, life itself, and sacrifices we each make. Arete is a princess who has been imprisoned in a tower her entire life, not able to learn or experience life as she wishes. Occasionally she sneaks out of the tower and goes to the village below, where she is able to blend as a... See full review

Phoenix

Sep 26, 2004

Story
Wow. The word flowed through my mind at a snail's pace as I absorbed what I had just seen, as the ending credits to Hinotori scrolled down the screen. Have you ever watched an anime that’s hard to pay attention to? When it’s really hard to force yourself to finish it at all, let alone quickly? You know the type: a genre you dislike, a boring storyline, or anything in between – you don’t like it, and you don’t want to have to finish the series. On the other hand, occasionally you find a gem which, for some reason, sucks you in and demands your attention. You can’t wait to watch... See full review

Pugyuru

Aug 27, 2004

Story
I think it should be immediately said that Pugyuru has no plot. At all. The entire "story" consists of pure randomness, revolving around small happenings in the life of a girl whose name starts with "Ma" (you never find out the rest). The episodes are also only about 3 minutes long, making the entire series taking up a mere 1.5 normal episodes worth of viewing material. At least 4 episodes revolve around meeting new characters, such as the squid, the bully, and the snow spirit. There are also quite a few episodes which delve into trying to figure out exactly what Cheko-chan really is! There's... See full review
